A BIRTHING CENTER FOR POOR MOTHERS

We are so proud of our Love A Child Birthing Center. This “dream come true” clinic provides poor mothers with the compassionate and quality care needed to safely deliver healthy babies. It is common for poor moms-to-be, who live in the rural “regions beyond” areas of Haiti, to give birth in mud huts on dirt floors in some of the most unsanitary conditions you can imagine. With little or no clean water and nowhere else to turn, babies are born on mud floors with insects and rats running around, and dirty razor blades or rusty tin can lids are often used to cut the umbilical cords. So many mothers and babies die from complications and infections due to unhygienic deliveries.

Mothers come to our Birthing Center from far and wide. They walk or even take a motorbike, and some come on donkeys from the mountains! They are treated with love and great respect and receive the best medical care possible. Going above and beyond routine maternity care, we also provide a variety of classes to help women prepare for a safe and clean birthing experience, including childbirth education, breastfeeding, nutrition, child development, family planning, and more. We have a full-time OB/GYN physician who oversees our wonderful Haitian nursing staff and midwives. They are some of the best medical professionals in Haiti, dedicated to making the birthing process easier and safer for mom and baby.

All babies are born in clean, sanitized rooms. Outside, “anxious fathers or relatives” can relax in rocking chairs on the front porch, where Christian music is always playing, and we also have “sleeping rooms” for relatives who come from far and need to spend the night. The moms and their family members are all served delicious food, and when they leave, receive wonderful kits filled with diapers, clothing, blankets baby items, etc. We are even able to provide “birth certificates.” This is a “big thing” in Haiti because many people who live in the mountains don’t have birth certificates, and most don’t even know how old they are. And, if you don’t have a birth certificate, you can’t go to school!

Our Birthing Center was built by faith and is truly a gift from God.
