College’s ‘amazing’ feedback

Shadow Education Secretary visits Chichester College and says it’s a ‘model for further education’

Susanna Reid

news@chichesterherald.co.uk

SHADOW EDUCATION SECRETARY, Tristram Hunt, was taken on a tour of Chichester College on Tuesday 3 June and saw the positive impact the Further Education establishment had on students and the local community. Mr Hunt, MP for Stoke-OnTrent Central, described his visit as ‘amazing’. Arriving with his entourage of advisors and journalists, he was greeted by Chichester College’s Principal, Shelagh Legrave, who gave him a tour of the College during the three hour visit. The tour began with a visit to A-levels, where Mr Hunt observed a Science class and an Adult Maths class.

The Shadow Education Secretary was impressed to see the Science students making paracetamol and the Maths students discussed how they want to further their skills to get a high quality job. As the afternoon began, Principal Shelagh Legrave showed Mr Hunt a Football Coaching class, Engineering class and was taken to Chichester College’s brand new G-Block, the home of Construction courses, and it was here Tristram Hunt was truly amazed by the vocational courses that are on offer to students. He visited Carpentry and Joinery, Upholstery and Electrical and spoke to students about how an Apprenticeship has given them the chance to ‘earn while they learn’ and receive excellent training.

Shadow Education Secretary visits Chichester College and says it’s a ‘model for further education’

The three hour tour ended with a number of students meeting Tristram Hunt to voice their opinions on the education system. They spoke about careers advice lacking in schools and not being told enough about other options away from A-levels such as vocational courses or Apprenticeships and that Chichester College had provided these choices. Shadow Education Secretary, Tristram Hunt, believed his visit to Chichester College was

enlightening, he said: “Chichester College is a model for further education. Inspiring leadership; high standards and expectations; engaged learners; and a curriculum fit for the 21st century. We need a revolution in vocational education if our economy is to succeed in the future. Chichester College is leading from the front. It lives up to its Outstanding judgement.” (In April 2014, Chichester College was announced as an overall Outstanding further education

establishment by Ofsted.) Chichester College Principal, Shelagh Legrave, said: “I was delighted that Tristram Hunt, Shadow Secretary of State for Education chose to visit Chichester College to celebrate our outstanding Ofsted and see vocational education in action. He had an easy style and engaged with many students studying A Levels and vocational qualifications. He particularly focused on the lack of advice and guidance in schools on career options and this was confirmed by the students he met. He left better informed about the options for vocational training and skills.”

FURTHER PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT EVENT

We are proposing a new supermarket, petrol station, hotel, community facilities and restaurant, along with new housing on the land at Park Farm, Selsey, at the junction of Manor Road and Chichester Road.

What do you think?

Landlink Estates, working with Marsh & Baxter Properties, would like to build a new supermarket-‐led development at Selsey. Before we submit a planning application we would like to know what you think of our plans. Following comments received from residents of Selsey at the 2013 appeal, and after extensive consultation with the Selsey Town Council Neighbourhood Planning Group (NPG), Landlink Estates is seeking to replace the appeal consent won last year with one that fulfills many of the points raised by residents. We are proposing a new quality supermarket, petrol station, hotel, community facilities and restaurant, along with new housing that follows the NPG design guidance. We are holding a further exhibition of the proposals where members of the development team will be on hand to receive your comments and suggestions and to answer any questions. Please come along and have your say.

@MattDavies__ I wonder what the reaction to the fracking plans in the Queen’s speech has been like back in Chichester & surrounding areas?

D DAY AND CHICHESTER Eisenhower stayed at The Ship in Chichester to finalise the air attacks on D Day. The allies thought Chichester was safe from the outside world, a perception which still prevails, doesn’t it? I have a pal who remembers D Day, he was 12. When he heard the news he assumed the war would be over in 2 weeks, because we would win easily, obviously. Funny, that’s how I remember the World Cup in 1966 (I was 12), I wasn’t at all surprised we won, how could any country stand up to us? You live and learn. ISLE OF WIGHT Took the family to the Isle of Wight for a couple of days at half term. What a hoot. This story sums the island up perfectly: I nipped into a greengrocer (yes a greengrocers!) to buy some fruit for our hotel room and the woman said she couldn’t break my £20 note. I said I’d go somewhere else and buy something to get change. I went to the other end of the road and found a Boots, picked out a toothbrush and went to the till. The woman said she couldn’t break my £20 note. I said I was only buying a toothbrush because the woman in the greengrocers couldn’t

break my £20 note. “Ah” said the Boots lady “That would be Sandie. She needs the change more than I do.” So she broke my note. I said to her “Does everyone know each other here then?” She said yes.

ISLE OF WIGHT Moseying around I found myself in the tunnel of the petrol pipeline they layed underwater from here to the north of France to keep the D Day lorries fuelled up as they hacked their way to Berlin. No memorial or nothing, just a little plaque from Churchill saying the pipeline shortened the war by 6 months. To keep the German spies fooled, they disguised it as a sprinkler system to water the local golf course. Sums up the two sides in a way, that the British might be so determined to carry on, while the Germans could believe a big lie.

Every time I’ve bought a secondhand (“pre-owned”, “pre-loved”) car, the radio has been set on Radio 3. This has to be a sales trick to make you think the previous owner was a passive septuagenarian. NEWSPAPER EATING I aim to eat my copy of the Herald on the opening day of the new football season, the venue TBA. I was certain Man Utd would win the Premiership. Taxi driver attacks man in Chichester POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a road rage row in which a taxi driver attacked a man and his car. At about 4.15pm on Friday (23 May) officers were called to Orchard Street in Chichester to a report that a man had been assaulted. A 68-year-old from Horsham was sitting in traffic when the driver of a taxi behind him tried to open the victim’s car door and then kicked off his wing mirror. After the offender had returned to his vehicle the 68-year-old got out of his black Mercedes to photograph the damage to his car and to record the registration number of the attacker’s car but as he did so the man returned and repeatedly punched him. The victim was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital with minor head and neck injuries. The offender drove off. PC Stu Bethan said: “The attacker was driving a maroon

Hackney cab and we believe he had a customer in the back of his taxi while he was assaulting his victim. “I am very keen to speak to that person as they may have seen the moments building up to the attack as well as the attack itself. “I would also like to speak to anyone else who was in the area around Orchard Street on Friday and saw or heard the incident happening. “If you know anything at all please contact me.” A 43-year-old man from Emsworth was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage and questioned before being released on bail until 6 July while officers carry out further inquiries. Two arrested in Chichester drugs raids TWO men were arrested in Chichester on Tuesday morning (May 27) as police followed up a raid on three properties in the city with a check on a BMW car in the city. Just before 11am officers simultaneously entered the properties in St Agnes Place, Osbourne Road and Charles Avenue after obtaining search warrants under the Misuse of Drugs Act. The warrant had been issued in connection with information that had been received by police about suspected heroin and crack cocaine dealing.

As a result of the raids, officers headed for the Portfield Retail Park where they gained access to a BMW car and recovered a quantity of suspected Class A drugs. Two men, who were sitting in the back seat of the car, refused to unlock the door and were arrested when police broke into the vehicle. Inspector Will Rolls said: “Drug dealing isn’t a major problem in the Chichester district, but where we receive any information about dealing or possession, we will respond swiftly, as we did on Tuesday.

“Our aim is to disrupt the dealers and make the city and surrounding areas a hostile place for them and people trying to buy illegal drugs. If you have any information that could help us please call 101 or talk to the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.” A 47-year-old man from Selsey and a 41-year-old man from Croydon were both arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply. They were bailed to July 10 and 12 respectively.

A Game of Thrones – Spain’s and Others One of my favourite role models is the Indian-born British runner, Fauja Singh, who took up running in his eighties after personal tragedy – losing his wife and son. As the first centenarian to run a marathon, Fauja is proof that life can begin again, with new ambitions, joys and rewards, at any age. Yet though Fauja, at 102, still puts on his trainers and runs every day, he has stopped running marathons. He’s not the only one. Longevity means we not only have marathon runners like Fauja but an Emeritus Pope Benedict and a veritable royal regatta of monarchs who are all hanging up their own trainers. Former King Albert of Belgium abdicated last year, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands also threw in the crown, even the Emir of Qatar had enough months before Worldcupgate. Now it’s the turn of Juan Carlos of Spain. The king, who was restored to the Spanish throne on the death of the dictator Franco, has had health problems and seen his popularity nosedive after his daughter Cristina and her husband’s corruption trial and his own ill-chosen holiday

hunting elephants while Spaniards were trying to deal with austerity measures. Our own still very popular Queen must be raising an eyebrow. She is 12 years older than Juan Carlos and Prince Charles just 10 years his junior. But I can’t see Her Majesty abdicating. She is made of sterner stuff, the sort that kept her family in residence at Buckingham Palace when it was hit by a bomb in the Second World War and sustained her during her “annus horribilis” in 1992, when the biography ‘Diana, Her True Story’ was published, Princess Anne and Prince Andrew split from their partners and Windsor Castle caught fire. Spend spend spend If you won the Lottery or the Pools

– does anyone do the Pools any more – and had a million or two to spare, what would you do with it? As someone who donates a tenner each month to Cancer Research I’d give it to the charity. This week it was wonderful to learn that a new drug that unlocks the body’s own immune system has been found to have very promising results for people with skin cancer and may help with other cancers too. I noted that one contributor to a blog on the new drug trials said he had to wait months before he was diagnosed by his GP. I sympathise. I lost my father to cancer and he was given pills for months which alleviated his abdominal pain, so you’ll understand how strongly I feel. Too many other families have to walk this path. I remember interviewing a man who wanted to give back his CBE because of his wife’s situation: a diagnosis delayed because her GP thought it was just ‘women’s troubles’. The Patient’s Association thinks medical students need to be taught better, right from the start, about eliminating serious diagnoses first. And government should be

helping the nation find a cure for cancer not just leaving it to charity. Above and beyond A marvellous plumber just called to replace a part in the boiler. He’s the sort who goes above and beyond the call of duty. At one house he visited, a ‘return valve’ was missing in a pipe feeding the boiler. It’s the thing that prevents backflow of water from the central heating system into the cold water mains and your drinking supply. It’s a real problem, he said, and quite a scary one, when you think about it. Any investor doing up a house, whether a cheapskate or an idiot, can buy plumbing and we have no guarantee that what they install is safe or fit for purpose. Like the one he was telling me about. The valve only cost peanuts but its omission was a real health hazard. Who you gonna call? Remember the day you ordered a fridge and ended up having to stay in all day? Happy days. Sometimes the delivery company and the fridge Contact Allis:

get delayed or never turn up at all. Which is when you ring up, as I did today. “Would you like to take their mobile number so you can ring them to find out where they are?” the woman asked, referring to the delivery company. Hang on a minute. I’m the customer, the one that doesn’t have to do the chasing. “No, I’ll let you do that,” I said. And finally Is it just me or are fewer people saying ‘thank you’? Probably, it was already a contagion a few years ago, when I stood politely holding the door open for a female colleague fast approaching on stilettos. Without so much as a grunt, she sailed through and was gone, leaving me standing like a lemon still holding the door for her. It’s like that old catch-22 when you challenge someone rude with the question: “Do you mind?” “No, I don’t,” they reply.

Heritage Lottery Fund awards over £9000 to open air museum THE WEALD & DOWNLAND OPEN AIR MUSEUM is delighted to be awarded funding of over £9,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to deliver their First World War Centenary events, which will run from 2 – 8 June 2014. Awarded through HLF’s First World War then & now programme, the funding will be used to support week-long activities involving school groups culminating in a weekend event ‘Horses at War’. All this week visitors will have the chance to understand how people living in the South Downs contributed to the war effort. There will be free activities for school groups, including recruitment and training of troops in Sussex (learning drills and filling sandbags) and the opportunity to find out about the effect of the war on food available in a recreated field kitchen both provided by Andy Robertshaw Battlefield Partnerships. There will be various displays across the site (e.g. from Singleton WI which was the first one to be founded in England in 1915) and demonstrations of charcoalburning, hurdle making and forestry (including the Women’s Timber Corps), and visitors can discover how three of our buildings (home, church and smithy) were affected by the conflict. Museum Director, Richard Pailthorpe, said: “We are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund. Every day this week in the run up to our special weekend event we will be welcoming local schools and

visitors to experience our war time displays and demonstrations with a strong focus on life in the South Downs during the First World War. Our weekend event commemorates the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War and to celebrate the courage of horses on the battlefield and the home front. We are especially pleased to welcome Robert Hall, senior

correspondent with the BBC News, on Sunday 8 June. Robert has a special responsibility for coverage of the First World War Centenary for the BBC and we are delighted that he will be attending our event. In addition, we are still actively encouraging our local community to bring along medals, photos, war records and other ephemera to the Military Ancestry Road Show for

identification or advice.” Explaining the importance of the HLF support, the Head of the HLF in the South East, Stuart McLeod, said: “The impact of the First World War was far reaching, touching and shaping every corner of the UK and beyond. The Heritage Lottery Fund has already invested more than £47 million in projects – large and small – that are marking this

global Centenary; with our new small grants programme, we are enabling even more communities like those involved in Horses at War at the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, to explore the continuing legacy of this conflict and help local young people in particular, to broaden their understanding of how it has shaped our modern world.”

National News News in Brief • A body has been found in the hunt for a missing British backpacker in Malaysia. Gareth Huntley, 34, from Cricklewood in north London, went missing while on a trek to a waterfall on Tuesday 27 May. A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “Malaysian police have confirmed that a body has been found on Tioman island in Malaysia.” More than 100 people had been involved in the search for Mr Huntley, but Malaysian authorities were initially criticised over the search effort. The body was found in a pond near the Juara Turtle project where Mr Huntley was living and working. • A portrait of teenage cancer fundraiser Stephen Sutton has failed to sell at auction. Bidding on the pencil and charcoal drawing, by artist Kelvin Okafor, closed at 16:00 BST on Saturday. Owner of the Albemarle Gallery, Tony Pontone, said he was “disappointed” the silent auction had not attracted more bidders and failed to meet its reserve. He said the drawing would be donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust, to auction itself at a later date.

Husband jailed for ‘honour killing’

Brothers Ahmed, Muhaned and Hussain Al-Khatib were all jailed at Manchester Crown Court

A MAN has been jailed for life for the “pre-planned honour killing” of his wife, whose body has never been found. Mother-of-three Rania Alayed, 25, from Manchester, went missing

last June. Ahmed Al-Khatib told Manchester Crown Court that he killed her in self-defence after an evil spirit entered her, but he denied murder.

• Police have released a recording of a woman who dialled 999 to request help in a row over the number of sprinkles on an ice cream. The caller, who was not named by West Midlands Police, contacted emergency operators on Monday while arguing with the owner of an ice cream van. During the minutelong call, the woman told the operator: “It doesn’t seem like much of an emergency but it is a little bit.” Police said 999 should not be misused.

nothing but shame on him and his family”. Muhaned Al Khatib, 38, denied murder but, along with his brother, admitted perverting the course of justice by transporting and concealing Ms Alayed’s body. He was given a three-year sentence. He told police Ms Alayed had been buried at the side of a layby on the A19 in North Yorkshire. Muhaned, of Arthur Millwood Court, Salford, was found not guilty of her murder. A third brother, Hussain AlKhatib, 34, of Knutsford Road, Gorton, was found guilty of perverting the course of justice and jailed for four years.

• An 11-year-old boy has been arrested after parents complained children had been jabbed with a diabetes finger-prick pen at school. Police said they had identified at least 20 children they believed had been jabbed at Moreton Community School in Wolverhampton. Public health officials have been told and pupils have been advised to have precautionary hepatitis injections. The child was arrested in Low Hill and bailed until July. • A man who posted an offensive message on Facebook after the killing of Leeds teacher Ann Maguire has been jailed. Jake Newsome wrote that he was “glad” she had been stabbed and he “felt sorry” for the boy accused of her murder. The 21-year-old completed his post with an obscene suggestion. Newsome, of Harehills in Leeds, admitted a malicious communication charge and was sentenced to six weeks in prison at Leeds Magistrates’ Court. Mrs Maguire was stabbed at Corpus Christi Catholic College in east Leeds on 28 April.

Al Khatib, 35, of Gorton, was handed a minimum term of 20 years. His brothers Muhaned and Hussain were also jailed for helping to dispose of her body. The prosecution said Ms Alayed had been killed for becoming “too westernised” and “establishing an independent life”. Mr Justice Leggatt, sentencing Ahmed, said Ms Alayed had suffered “years of violence”. He said: “The contempt you showed for Rania in death matched the contempt of how you treated her in life.” Greater Manchester Police’s Det Ch Insp Phil Reade said her death had been an “honour killing” and added that “the irony is that this horrific act of self-pity brought

NINE PEOPLE have been injured when a sightseeing tour boat crashed into Tower Bridge. The City Cruises vessel Millennium Diamond, with 130 people on board, struck the bridge at about 12:00 BST. The boat continued to St Katharine Docks where paramedics treated the injured. Five people were taken to hospital, including a 64-year-old woman with pelvic and head injuries. The bridge remained open to traffic despite the crash. A man and a girl made their own way to get medical treatment and two other women were checked at the scene, but did not require further assistance, London

Ambulance service said. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) said it understood that a woman suffered pelvic and head injuries when she fell down some steel steps. Kevin Maynard, from the RNLI, said: “We understand the woman had been standing at the top of some steel steps when the collision happened and the impact knocked her down. “We treated the woman by giving her oxygen and using blankets to keep her warm, as well as dressing her wound and placing her on a board to protect her spine.” The Met’s marine policing unit also attended the scene. No arrests were made.

A BINMAN whose shattered leg had to be amputated above the knee after his rubbish truck hit a parked lorry has been awarded £1.8m in damages. Michael Bagridge, then 22, was a front-seat passenger when the lorry’s cab collapsed on impact in March, Cambridgeshire, in January last year. He and the driver had to be cut from the wreckage, the High Court heard. Mr Bagridge sued his employers, Fenland District Council. The court heard liability was never in dispute. He appeared on crutches at

court and, although he has been fitted with a prosthesis, uses a wheelchair over longer distances. His

counsel

QC told the court: “It was a horrendous accident in which Mr Bagridge was not the only significant casualty.” Approving

settlement of the case, Judge David Pittaway QC said: “The damages will enable Mr Bagridge to enhance his quality of life and, no doubt, will give his parents some comfort as to his long-term future.”

Chichester’s a beautiful city; steeped in history and popular with many tourists. With our main economic drivers encompassing salad, sailing and public administration, we are home to hundreds of creative and hard-working SME’s too. From jewellers to sculptors, the majority of our small businesses rely on an internet presence, in order to do business. This is why a campaign for better broadband has been so popular amongst Chichester’s residents and business owners, many of whom feel that Chichester is not adequately served by broadband and that they are struggling to reach clients beyond the city walls.

Chichester Herald provides businesses with an unrivalled, targeted and cost-effective advertising solution across the City with a newspaper readership of 83,000. The newspaper is available for selfselected pick-up across the city of Chichester and surrounding areas in a wide variety of locations every Friday. We also deliver thousands of newspapers to homes across the area every week.

to Mark Ponsford, the Director of Kromark Limited, the Bognor based supplier of embroidered and printed workwear. Although based in a neighbouring town, Mark mentioned how his business growth is being directly affected by the lack of Fibre Broadband too, and that little information exists as to when it will be available. “I want to give my customers the best possible experience when dealing with my company, unfortunately that is not the case when dealing with BT…” Mark explained to me. “As part of our plans to deliver excellent customer service, we want to be able to upgrade our telecoms solutions so that we can automatically identify a customer as they call in and give them all the information they need without having to ask 101 identity questions. Trying to track down an answer is like expecting a straight answer from a politician, you get given loads of information you don’t need, and you even get told that it’s available but when you press as to when, nobody has any idea”. Mark’s frustrations are shared by many other businesses too. As well as this, over 1000 businesses in our area will also get at least one newspaper delivered to them whether they are in the City Centre, a town or village, an industrial business park or a lone café on a country road. We have 422 newspaper stands across the district which is located as far north as Midhurst, south to Selsey, the Witterings and Pagham, east to Arundel and west to Bosham. DESPITE taking home seven per cent less salary than their male counterparts, women in the UK are putting the same percentage of their income away each year as men, Scottish Friendly has revealed today. According to the ISA provider’s Disposable Income Index, both men and women save, on average, 2.5 per cent of their annual salary over the course of the year, highlighting no difference in their savings intentions. On average, women are left with just £140 disposable income each month after the essentials (mortgage, rent, utilities, car) are paid for, compared to £155 for men. Despite this disparity, women remain as determined to put money aside each month. The findings come from the third instalment of Scottish Friendly’s Disposable Income Index, which examines levels of take home pay and people’s attitudes to spending. When it comes to spending their disposable income, there is a clear divide between the sexes on what is considered a luxury and what is considered a necessity and, arguably, women have come out as the most pragmatic. More men than women believe that eating out, morning coffee, holidays, socialising and buying new clothes are necessities. Conversely, more women than men believe that paying the rent, keeping a mobile phone and paying for petrol are necessities. A staggering 94% of women said that they considered paying bills on time a necessity, compared to just 89% of men. Scottish Friendly was the first investment ISA provider to outline its New ISA (NISA). The friendly society allows savers to invest from as little as £10 per month. To find out more visit, www.scottishfriendly.co.uk The value of investments can go down as well as up and you may not get back the original amount invested.

Local architectural practice present at industry event in Japan LOCAL ARCHITECTURAL practice jbA from Chichester have recently arrived back from an International SU Podium seminar held in Toyko, Japan. SU Podium is a popular photo-realistic plug-in for SketchUp, a 3D modeling software used by architects and designers. Nat Ellis, Senior Architectural Technician at jbA, was invited to present at the event following a successful trip to Vail, in the USA for the bi-annual SketchUp 3D Basecamp conference. Dave Wayne, the owner and founder of SU Podium, was impressed with the 3D visualisation carried out by jbA and as a result invited Nat to discuss his work at the industry event in Japan and present a hands-on workshop showing the best way to create 3D visualisations in Podium. The SU Podium event took place on 22 May where Nat presented to an audience of over 60 Japanese professionals to talk about how he uses the software in his daily work at jbA. The following day Nat delivered a demonstration of Podium at a conference centre near the busy district of Shibuya before

returning back to Chichester. “The two days were very intense but very productive,” comments Nat. “Overall the trip was successful and it was a great experience to be able to show how I have been using Podium to create high-end renders at jbA and impart this knowledge to like-minded professionals in Japan.” Nat has been invited back to Japan later in the year to deliver another seminar and workshop session. Having worked within the

industry for over 15 years and at jbA for more than ten years, Nat has extended his skills from complex computer drafting to near photo-realistic 3D rendering which the office uses throughout all its projects. 3D visualisation has been utilised for various local projects including Westbourne House School, Chichester Rackets Club and Farbridge wedding venue. Cinema Review: 22 Jump Street 22 Jump Street (15) Running time: 112 mins Director: Phil Lord, Chris Miller Starring: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Nick Offerman

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum reunite to hilarious effect in 22 Jump Street, a rare sequel that actually manages to surpass the crowd-pleasing achievements of the original. Co-directed once again by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, this winning follow-up manages to maintain the self-deprecating and subversive tone of its predecessor (which openly acknowledged the absurdity of remaking the Johnny Depp career-making TV series) by taking aim at the shortcomings of sequels. Hence, 22 Jump Street is knowingly repetitive in a surprisingly inventive way, poking fun at everything from Michael Bayinspired action movies to buddy cop bro-mance dynamics and comingof-age turmoil.

Hill and Tatum play, respectively, undercover cops Schmidt and Jenko who must swap high school for college as they attempt to thwart another drugs ring. But while the plot has a familiar ring to it, complete with standard genre clichés, Lord and Miller have fun toying with and even dissecting expectation. The ensuing ride entertains by virtue of this willingness to both embrace sequel tradition and go one better so that nothing feels lazy

or half-hearted. The chemistry between the two leads is still irresistible, the gags and in-jokes are inspired and the action is suitably pumped up and over the top. What’s more, there’s scene-stealing support from Ice Cube, returning as the boys’ perpetually angry boss, and clever cameos and references that extend right through the end credits (which are definitely worth staying for). There are only a few occasions where some of the jokes feel overworked and the pace sags but even then Lord and Miller always seem to have something up their sleeve to put the film back on track. It’s a wildly entertaining feel-good movie that not only rates as one of the best mainstream comedies of the year but also one of the finest sequels you’re ever likely to see.

Razor blades and dirty Mayor’s Food Save scheme saves London restaurants 70 stone of waste cat litter have been found

LONDON’S smaller restaurant, hotel and pub businesses are being invited to join Boris Johnson’s Food Save scheme, which has already helped 15 businesses save more than £100,000 a year while preventing 70 stone of food going to waste. Imperial head chef Tom Hope and the Mayor’s environment adviser Matthew Pencharz with the weight equivalent in vegetables of the food the Imperial is saving each month Imperial head chef Tom Hope and the Mayor’s environment adviser Matthew Pencharz with the weight

equivalent in vegetables of the food the Imperial is saving each month Research by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) shows that the hospitality industry has the equivalent of over 1.3bn meals go to waste every year. The Food Save scheme helps small businesses to combat this. Results from the first 15 businesses to take part in the scheme show annual savings of over £6,000 in direct food costs as well as a reduction of 1.6 tonnes of food waste. The success the scheme has had

with the first 15 businesses taking part has meant that 200 more businesses are now being invited to join in. The project is free for those taking part and is funded by the Mayor of London, European Regional Development Fund and London Waste and Recycling Board, while being delivered by the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) and Sustain. Senior operations manager at the SRA Victoria Moorhouse said: “Food Save is making very good progress towards its ultimate target to divert more than 1,000 tonnes of food waste from landfill, reduce over 150 tonnes of food waste and save businesses over £350,000. “The power of what we are doing with the scheme is measuring the impact that these interventions make to food waste and the resulting cost savings. By making staff aware of what they are throwing away and how this impacts the bottom line helps to shape behaviour change and this is the key to making change last.”

in items donated to a food bank in West Sussex VOLUNTEERS at Burgess Hill Community Food Bank found disposable razor blades in a box of sage and onion stuffing and cat litter in a coffee jar. Chairman Fr Kevin O’Brien said he believed it was a malicious act and was carrying out an internal investigation. He said the contaminated packages were picked up during routine checks of donations and not handed out. Bags of food to feed recipients for three days are distributed from the Spire Cafe at St John’s Church. To qualify, recipients have to first collect a voucher from agencies including Sussex Police, Job Centre Plus and Burgess Hill children and family centres.

Fr O’Brien said every item donated was inspected in case any were out of date or damaged. “We were not anticipating this but the systems were able to pick it up,” he said. “It is impossible to ascribe a motive to that sort of behaviour. “I can’t imagine why anyone would do that other than having something either against a food bank or against the clients of food banks. “I hope this person will think again and not judge those who use food banks but realise they are just ordinary people who sometimes hit difficulties.” He said the food bank may have no choice but to involve the police following its own investigations.

Health & Beauty Uses of Black Cohosh

If you ache in any way, whether from menstrual cramps, an injury, or a condition such as arthritis, black cohosh may be the herb to help you. Black cohosh acts as an antispasmodic to muscles, nerves, and blood vessels and as a muscle anti-inflammatory. It contains the anti-inflammatory salicylic acid (the base for the active ingredient in aspirin), among several other

Denise Kelly Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist constituents, and has been used for an assortment of muscular, pelvic, and rheumatic pains for years. So what is this wonder herb? Black cohosh is a wild plant found throughout the eastern United States and Canada. Native Americans used it to treat a wide range of ailments but most notably in herbal remedies for gynecologic conditions. What is it most useful for? Black cohosh seems

particularly effective for uterine cramps and muscle pain caused by nervous tension, as well as pains accompanied by stiffness, soreness, and tight sensations or contractions. Native Americans used it originally for female and muscular conditions as well as fatigue, sore throat, arthritis, and rattlesnake bites. (Not that we will be needing that here in the UK, but you never know!) Early American physicians used black cohosh for female reproductive problems, including menstrual cramps and bleeding irregularities, as well as uterine and ovarian pain. Black cohosh relaxes the uterus, especially when tension is caused by anxiety, allowing the hormones to regulate. It is believed to act on the uterus by improving muscle tone, so it is useful for preventing miscarriage and premature labor. The herb also is recommended for women who have had difficult labors and in those cases it is administered in small doses in the last trimester of pregnancy to prepare the uterus for delivery. It

Black cohosh also can be helpful when contractions during labor are weak, or for severe after pains following labor. Women who take extracts of black cohosh have not demonstrated the side effects usually associated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), leading researchers to believe that this herb could be a safe alternative to traditional HRT. Several clinical trials support the usefulness of black cohosh for relieving hot flushes in menopausal

Rihanna flashes boobs and New research reveals one in five people more in sheer crystal gown are ‘ashamed’ of their community area at CFDA Fashion Awards

IT HAD BEEN A WHILE since risqué pop beauty Rihanna had made a grand red carpet entrance. But that all changed on Monday night. The sultry singer ensured all eyes were on her as she worked the red carpet at the CFDA Fashion awards - or the “Oscars of fashion” - held in New York.

With no bra and just a teeny tiny flesh coloured thong to protect her modesty, the 26-year-old star was flashing a whole heap of flesh under the floor-skimming fishnet custom Adam Selman dress. Drake’s on-off girlfriend completed her eye-popping slinky sheer outfit with a Swarovski crystal embellished headscarf and over the elbow gloves, a pink fur stole, and smoky eyes. Whether you like or loathe the outfit, the singer scooped the 2014 Fashion Icon Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, presented to her by Vogue’s Anna Wintour. Commenting on the creation, Rihanna’s stylist said: “We definitely wanted to make it a little bit scandalous.“The dress is just fishnet and crystals and a couple of fingers crossed. But fashion is about beauty, and the [female] body is party of that.”

ONE IN FIVE people are ‘ashamed’ of the place where they live - with unsightly buildings, litter and a lack of friendliness among the locals the biggest contributors, revealed today. A study into the average person’s relationship with their local community found that many feel disillusioned with the place they call home because of a lack of community spirit. More than half of the 2,000 studied weren’t confident they had a sense of community in their local area at all, with many blaming a society too ‘plugged in’ to phones and screens when out and about or people even being scared to talk to one another. The research, commissioned by cleaning manufacturer Kärcher as part of their ‘Kärcher Cleans Britain’ campaign, found more than a third felt the area where they lived was in decline. A general messiness and the place looking scruffy in appearance were the biggest reasons for people to be ashamed of their local area. An abundance of litter,

neglected or run-down buildings and a perceived rise in crime also contributed to people feeling negative toward their home areas. Sadly, people ‘not seeming to care about one another’ and an absence of community spirit in helping out neighbours was also prevalent in leading to people’s lack of love for where they live. Kärcher Cleans Britain is a project close to our hearts, which we hope will really encourage people to take pride in their communities. We want to help Britain clean up and urge all who care about their communities to do their bit.”When it came to knowing people in their area, Brits say that most of their neighbours were strangers with 47 per cent claiming this best sums up their relationship with the people near them. The decline in making connections spreads to the streets and further – six in ten think people never talk to each other on the street anymore. Being constantly ‘plugged in’ to smartphones or music players

was the single biggest reason to lead respondents to thinking society was becoming increasingly independent. The study also found pride in the area is completely split with just half able to declare themselves proud of where they live. Nearly a fifth said there was a lot of graffiti close to their home while unkempt gardens, out of business shops and vandalised bus stops were common eyesores. As well as staring at screens to avoid talking to one another, nearly a third genuinely believed people are scared to talk to people they don’t know in the street. Should you run into trouble on the street, it’s nearly a 50/50 chance as to whether people would help you out, with 44 per cent saying they wouldn’t help a stranger in the street. 25% of Brits surveyed didn’t even know where their local sports ground or community playing fields were. Of those that did, Brits revealed they are embarrassed about the state of them, describing them as ‘rundown’, ‘deserted’ and ‘old fashioned’.

Driverless car hysteria PEOPLE ARE HYSTERICAL about driverless cars. They just don’t get it. That’s what’s really interesting about both the design of and the reaction to Google’s latest self-driving car. As it happens, there’s a fascinating archive episode of Horizon on BBC iPlayer that dates from 1978. It’s about computer chips and how they will make us all unemployed. It basically predicts end of days if we don’t stop the computer chip from replacing nearly all of us as workers. It predicts even doctors

will be gone soon. There’s a similar hysteria surrounding driverless cars right now. That’s despite the fact that from top to bottom, Google’s new driverless car is design to allay fears. With its friendly face, it looks like it wouldn’t squish a fly. It’s limited to 25mph. The front is made of soft foam and the windshield of soft, bendy plastic. None of that, in my view, has anything to do with actual safety. It’s all about reassuring the masses that

they’re not about to be mown down by a fleet of four-wheeled robotic overlords. After all, Google’s existing driverless cars, based on cars like the steel-bodied Toyota Prius, have been faultless up to now. The only incidents they have been involved with were due to human error, not robo-car malfunction. That’s not to say that Google’s technology is infallible. It isn’t and it won’t ever be. Nor will anyone else’s. But it’s probably already safer than any human driver. Not that most people can get their head around that notion. In fact, reactions to Google’s vehicle prove that most people struggle to grasp even the most basic benefits of driverless cars, let alone the more nuanced possibilities. Here are some of the more common misconceptions that people have: ‘When the computer crashes, so will you!’ ‘How will these things know what pedestrians are going to do? They’ll

descended on Rugby HQ. And during half-time Stanton’s youngsters got their moment in the spotlight in front of the sellout 82,000 crowd as they took part in the Land Rover Cup Parade of Champions. Their time to shine was reward for winning a Land Rover Cup festival held by Harlequins back in October, and Stanton believes his team loved every minute of their experience of a lifetime. “It’s fantastic to be here, the boys have worked really hard this year and won six out of eight tournaments,” said Stanton. “It’s the experience of a lifetime, having played at Twickenham at a younger age for North Midlands I know how great it will be for them to experience the atmosphere. “For them to walk around in front of 80,000 people is just something

they will hopefully experience and is something that will inspire them to want to achieve. “I can only say to the guys that it’s something you’ll want to repeat and repeat and repeat because the experience of the atmosphere is something you’ll want to hear all the time. “It’s the ultimate opportunity and gives them a real insight into what Premiership rugby is all about and the euphoria of going out in front of so many people is amazing.” Not only did Chichester under12s get to walk on the hallowed Twickenham turf but they also got to meet and hear from former World Cup winner and England captain Lewis Moody. And Moody admits that he was just as impressed with Chichester under-11s as he was with the two teams going head to head for the

Aviva Premiership crown. “The Land Rover Cup is a fantastic event for inspiring young rugby players,” said Moody. “Kids need to be inspired and if this is one way of inspiring kids into rugby then I think it’s brilliant. “The chance to stand on the pitch, the hallowed turf, where their heroes have been – that’s a dream for any rugby player or fan. “By having these kids come to Twickenham, seeing what it’s about and walking out in front of a bumper crowd, it might inspire them to progress further with their rugby. You never know we might see a couple of them as future England stars in World Cups to come.” Land Rover supports grassroots rugby and provides the opportunity for 7000 youngsters to take part in the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup.
