Weapon but no motive

Bosham man on bail as possible weapon is discovered by police

Dean Adams

news@chichesterherald.co.uk

DETECTIVES have released photos of a hammer which they believe is the weapon used to kill Valerie Graves in Bosham. It was found in Bosham by the search team working on the murder inquiry. Ms Graves was discovered dead in a groundfloor bedroom on the morning of Monday 30 December at the house in Smugglers Lane she was looking after with three other members of her family, while the owners were away. She died from significant head and facial injuries. Since then a long list of people,

including Ms Graves’s family, have been questioned, along with Bosham villagers. One of them, a 22-year-old man, who lives 400 yards away from the crime scene, was questioned for more than 48 hours but released on bail until February 17. Cars have been impounded and frogmen have searched the flooded rivers for a possible weapon. The colourful, and possibly sordid, history of the property, which may have doubled up as a swinger’s venue and in which Ms Graves was staying, has been investigated. The man has been given conditional bail until Monday 17 February. Police continue to search the area in Bosham Continued on page 3 Sussex Police welcome increasing focus on cyber crime

Bosham man on bail as possible weapon is discovered by police Continued from page 1 But this week, Sussex Police released pictures of what they think is the murder weapon: a heavy-duty claw hammer, which was found in the village. It would appear that they have made a key breakthrough. Detective Superintendent Nick May from Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said: “We need to know the origins of this hammer. Do you recognise it? (See photo, far right.) “We need people to check if they have lost such a hammer or had one stolen in the period leading up to the murder. “We would also ask police officers, prison staff, probation officers and professionals who work in mental health, if they have dealt with anyone who has talked about causing someone harm with a hammer, to let us know. “The hammer is about 30cm in length. It has a distinctive red and black handle and is embossed with the words Forge Steel with a picture of an outline of an anvil. “If so we would like to hear from

you. We are continuing to appeal for any information from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area from late afternoon on Sunday 29 December to 10am on Monday 30 December to come forward.” A statement issued by Ms Graves’ family said she was “an eternal student who was always hungry for a new challenge”. “Val was a much-loved daughter,

sister, mum and nan, who will be sorely missed by the whole family,” the statement said. “Val was a free spirit who enjoyed her life and was a talented artist, about to embark on a new path involving ceramics. “She had recently moved back to Sussex from Scotland to be closer to her family and we were lucky enough to spend a family Christmas together.

“This has been a complete shock to the family and we appeal to anyone who has any information, no matter how trivial, to contact Sussex Police.” Stuart Grange lived near Ms Graves in Maxton, near the Scottish borders, until she moved a few months ago. He said: “(She was) a good neighbour, a very private person, hard worker … well regarded,

well liked. “We’re a very small community here and this has caused a lot of shock. It’s really appalling and sad what has happened to her.” Phone Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Ensign or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. Let us know what you think

Sussex Police welcome increasing focus on cyber crime SUSSEX Police have welcomed the Home Office 'Cyber Street' campaign launched on 13 January and aimed at preventing on line crime. In February the force is also launching a further campaign focusing on how people in Sussex can protect themselves online. Activities will include a live event for young people and a month of internet safety awareness in schools to reinforce existing educational packages. To support members of the public who need advice and support with safe social media and internet use, officers will be given updated guidance on social media law, and information on the Sussex Police website will help computer users find out how to improve their security settings.

Online crime is a growing issue and many internet users are unaware of the risks. It can take many forms including credit card fraud, online harassment and identity theft, and have a serious impact on people's lives. Detective Chief Superintendent Steve Fowler said: "Businesses and individuals lose millions of pounds each year to online fraud. We see cases in Sussex where the actions of fraudsters can have a devastating impact for victims. Sometimes the most basic steps, such as checking your security settings and using virus software, can protect you from becoming a victim. "The Home Office Cyber Street campaign encourages the public to think about how they can use the internet safely. We

urge Internet users to visit www. cyberstreetwise.com to find out more about how they can protect themselves. “The Hi-Tech Crime Unit in Sussex Police has certainly seen a steady increase in the number of devices including mobile phones, computers and other storage devices, which we investigate. In 2013 we examined just under 4000, whereas in 2012 it was 3500. This is due to continual advances in technology and ways in which it can be used for all types of crime including domestic abuse, harassment, burglary and robbery as well as fraud." Further details of events, including a live broadcast for young people on Safer Internet Day, 11 February, will be publicised on the Sussex Police website.

A skinhead spat in my face at Waterloo

@The_Witterings Shingle being transported from Bracklesham to East Wittering today.

Legendary TV and radio personality HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE Rome has just elevated some 84 year old Spanish boyo a Cardinal who says homosexuality is the same as stuff like high blood pressure and you can cure it. I have high blood pressure which is hard to cure, but if I was gay I wouldn’t want it “cured”, not past the frightening years of early teens. I might want to be cured of Catholicism. TATTOOS ROUND HERE Went to Portsmouth swimming pool, had to look at the latest tattoos, no choice, had to. Men and women with lots of ink, mostly obscure symbolic stuff, some men with whole arms gone. Couple of older men with eagles and dragons at their biceps, Navy. I have this to report: the finer the young body, the more likely it was spoiled. THIS I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. CITIZEN’S ARREST Some wally tried to do a citizen’s arrest on Tony Blair for “war crimes” this week. Mind, I’ve done a citizen’s arrest myself, fantastic it was! A skinhead spat in my face at Waterloo station, marginally crossing the line of fair comment I felt, so I gave chase. He was a big lad but I caught up with him next to Tie Rack, and we tumbled down on the concrete. In no time several cops pulled us apart and advised me they

would prosecute him, but that I should be aware that he might be in his rights to pursue me for assault. He never showed up in court.

THE PAST I wish all the doom-mongering folk who think the world is going to hell in a handcart could have a trip back in a time machine, or, more feasibly, read one of Trevelyan’s social histories of Britain.

CHICHESTER DOG ALERT The New Forest is too close for comfort, and Chichester dog owners need to be on the alert for a killer disease called diopathic renal glomerular vasculopathy, which sounds hideous, but not as hideous as its popular name: Alabama dog rot. A cousin of ecoli, an outbreak seems to have originated in the New Forest last year, 13 cases, but it’s spreading and has reached Surrey. The dog gets depressed then dies of kidney failure. Lesions on the legs the easiest symptoms to spot.

THE FUTURE I wonder how many of the things we tolerate nowadays will be outlawed in 100 years’ time. Casual verbal cruelty, treating children like they’re pests, massive junking of packaging, massive junking of the stuff that came in the packaging... RESPITE I noticed a local sports report recently where the phrase “rest bite” was used instead of “respite”: “We enjoyed our rest bite...” What a fantastic phrase! A mistake, perhaps. But isn’t “rest bite” better than “respite”.

BEAVER They have photographic evidence of the UK’s first wild beaver for 900 years. Excellent, because our ancestors behaved abysmally towards them. Not just because they ate them and wore them. Because they believed the beaver’s castor sacs were hangover cures, so they licked them. The castor sacs. Contact Tommy: Follow Tommy on

Man’s life is saved by locating device THE WIFE of a man from Midhurst, who went missing while on holiday, has said that Chichester Careline’s Mindme locating device for those with dementia, saved his life. John Dunn, 73, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease six months ago, had been walking with his family near Durdle Door on Christmas day, when he went missing. Thankfully, John was wearing the Mindme device, which can locate someone anywhere in Europe, as long as there is a mobile connection. His wife, Rosemary Dunn, 62, called Chichester Careline to ask if they could locate her husband. Staff from Chichester Careline explained his co-ordinates to a South Western Ambulance volunteer responder and the Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team, who had joined the family in their search. They located John on a farm track just north of Bats Head, west of Durdle Door. John was in a distressed state when he was found. He had attempted to get over a barbed wire fence, resulting in a number of cuts, and was stuck in some mud. He was

airlifted to Dorset County Hospital suffering from the early signs of hypothermia. Rosemary said: “If John hadn’t been wearing the device around his neck, it would have been very difficult to locate him.” “I panicked as soon as I realised that John was missing. It was surprising how far he got in such a short space of time.” Rosemary adds: “I cannot explain how much of relief it is to know that when you have lost someone that there is a way of finding them again. If it hadn’t been for the people helping us, I dread to think what would have happened. “The device assists us on a regular basis. For example, if I’m sorting the washing out upstairs and John happens to leave the house for a walk, I know that I will be able to locate him if he doesn’t return. On another occasion, John asked if he could wait for me while I popped into a shop for two minutes. When I returned, John had walked off. However, I was able to call Chichester Careline, who told me exactly where I could find him. “The device gives John his freedom and provides me with the

reassurance that I can find him if he wanders. It is absolutely invaluable and I wouldn’t be without it. Knowing what a difference the device has made to us, I now want to make sure that others in a similar position are aware that this is available.” Mindme is a locating device that can attach to your house keys, place in your pocket, or hang around your neck. It is available to anyone in the UK and is monitored by Chichester Careline, which is run by Chichester District Council. The service supports those who are vulnerable, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The device, which has already helped to save a number of lives, is a small GPS locator. If a person becomes lost or disorientated, they can be located through a dedicated website by their family, or Chichester Careline. The device sends details of its location to the website every four minutes, and is thought to be the smallest GPS locating device in this country. A further version has also been created with a button that allows the user to speak directly to Chichester

Careline. This version is now being used to provide reassurance to carers, lone workers, those who are recovering from an illness and those who are vulnerable, or at risk. Not only has the device been popular with individuals, but police forces, local authorities and health authorities from across Europe are now using the device with great success. “We are delighted that our Mindme device helped to locate John and that he is now fully recovered,” said Cllr Eileen Lintill, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Community Services at Chichester District Council. “The device helps to give freedom to those with dementia, and reassurance to their families – 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Even on Christmas day, the service is helping to save lives – as this case shows. “It quite literally has helped to transform people’s lives. Even if someone is recovering from a major illness, they are able to continue with their day to day lives and know that our Chichester Careline service is there if they need it.” Chichester Careline is the only

centre in the country, monitoring the devices. They are able to locate the person if they become lost - regardless of where they are in Europe (as long as they have a mobile network). Information on the location of the person will only be provided to the carer or family once a series of security checks have been passed. This same procedure is on the website. The centre, which also monitors lone workers and other vulnerable groups of people, helped to get the idea off the ground and operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Police appeal to owner of dog that bit a woman in Emsworth A 20-YEAR-OLD woman was bitten by a Dalmatian as she walked her dog in Russet Gardens, Emsworth. Police are trying to trace the owner of the dog which was off its leash at the time. He was walking with his Dalmation, which he said was a rescue dog and only recently acquired, when it became aggressive and bit the woman's hand as she lifted her dog. The deep cut required hospital treatment. The incident happened at about 2.30pm on 9 January.

Fracking on the agenda

PC Matthew Snelson said: "The man, who had a young girl with him, apologised for his dog's behaviour however he did not leave any details. We would appeal for him to contact us on 101 quoting serial 0706 9/1 or email 101@sussex. pnn.police.uk. "The man is described as white, in his 60s, stocky, with short grey hair. He was wearing a Barbour-style jacket. If you know him or recognise him please can you contact police so we can discuss the matter with him."

A PUBLIC information evening about Fracking will be held on Thursday 13 February at 7.30 pm in St George’s Church, Cleveland Road, Chichester, PO19 7AD. The aim of the evening is to inform the residents of the Chichester area of the issues surrounding fracking which is proposed to come to West Sussex. There will be several short presentations from: • Trevor Beattie, Chief Executive, and Claire Potts, Minerals and Waste Lead, from South Downs National Park Authority

A 15-METRE wide culvert is to be built in Earnley by West Sussex County Council to help protect residents from flooding. The structure will allow a new flood alleviation channel, constructed by the Environment Agency, to pass underneath Almodington Lane. The work is part of the Environment Agency’s Medmerry sea defence scheme for the Manhood peninsula, inland between Selsey and Bracklesham. Once finished, the scheme will

POLICE have confirmed the identity of a driver who died when his car came off the A27 at Emsworth. He was Aaron Frost, 25, of Conway Drive, Bognor Regis. Shortly before 8pm on Monday, January 13, Aaron was driving his blue BMW car east when it came off the carriageway just before the Shell garage. The vehicle collided with a barrier and trees before coming

to rest. Aaron was taken to St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, where he later died. Police are continuing their investigation into the collision and would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fratton Roads Policing unit, quoting Operation Santini, on 101.

Mike Elkington, Strategic Planning Manager from West Sussex County Council • Keith Taylor, MEP for South East Region • Tony Bosworth Energy Campaigner, Friends of the Earth • Peter Carson and Peter Lambart, independent oil and gas consultants After the presentations, there will be an opportunity for members of the public to ask questions and voice any concerns. The meeting will be chaired by Cllr

Michael Woolley, former Mayor of Chichester. Entry is free and a small amount of parking is available next to the Church. We would encourage people to use the Cattle Market Car Park which is a short 5 minute walk away from the Church. Should you have any questions about this Public Information Meeting, please contact Polly Gaskin on polly_dee@hotmail.com, or Sarah Sharp on sarah.ccc@virgin.net or 07789 843556, or Jan Sander on jan@ sander.plus.com.

Work starts on Monday on key drainage work in Earnley improve drainage infrastructure for over 300 homes, the B2145 Chichester Road and the Selsey water treatment works. Work starts on the concrete culvert on Monday, January 27 and is expected to take 10 weeks to complete. Because a large excavation of the site is needed to build the culvert, Almodington Lane will be closed throughout the works between Bookers Lane (western end) and Easton Lane. Signed diversions will be in place

for motorists throughout the project. County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Pieter Montyn, said: “This new culvert is a key part of a large-scale Environment Agency project to improve flood defences on the Manhood peninsula. “We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause, but once finished it will greatly improve the flood protection serving this area. “We ask for people to bear with us while the work is done.”

Body worn cameras head trouble off Delivery of local services on agenda for Health and in Chichester bars and restaurants BODY-WORN cameras funded by the Business Improvement District have been heralded a success, following live trials by Chichester Businesses Against Crime (ChiBAC) in several Chichester bars and restaurants over the Christmas period. Following a pilot of the new cameras over two nights at Chichester University Student Union Bar at the start of December, ChiBAC organised a further live trial in the Dolphin and Anchor pub in West Street, Chichester, which was deemed a tremendous success. These body worn cameras are worn overtly on the outside of a protective vest with a visible screen showing what is being filmed. The cameras film exactly what the doorman or staff member who wears it sees and members of the public interacting with the door staff can actually see themselves being filmed on the screen. The belief is that because the cameras are clearly visible, they deter people from igniting potentially antagonistic situations.

As Dave Johnson, manager of the Dolphin and Anchor, comments: “Let me take the opportunity to say again that these body worn cameras are one of the best tools I have ever had at my disposal and ChiBAC should be proud of this initiative. Over the Christmas period I would say it completely diffused at least 10 incidents that could have very quickly escalated into something bigger.” Following these two successful operations, ChiBAC rolled out the cameras fully across all the ChiBAC members on 20th December and there are now six cameras regularly in action in Chichester on Friday and Saturday evenings and they are also available to ChiBAC members in the City Centre on busy days or evenings during the week, or when there are events on in the City. Tessa Callingham, manager of ChiBAC comments: “The purchase of the Body Worn Video cameras (BWV) has been a great success for Chichester. The cameras support staff in

Prom Gone Wrong I AM CURRENTLY in the crazy position of having to help organise a prom. This is a huge responsibility if you go to a girls’ school – as one of my friends put it ‘it is the only other thing apart from your wedding when you can look like a princess’. I’m not quite sure if it is actually that excessive, but people do get really pulled into it. Girls were buying their dresses in September. There has been talk of buying clutch bags. CLUTCH bags. What is even the point in a clutch bag? It doesn’t have a handle so it is basically a bag without the part that makes it useful. The thing is, prom represents the end of an era for all those involved. You’ve finished school and you want to look fit. But seriously, the pressure is already getting to me. I went prom dress shopping the other day (I know, it’s January, but apparently I’m already leaving it quite late) and this stressed me out hugely. You think you know yourself: think again. Trying on prom dresses brings out a new competitive streak. There are girls filling the room, each of them twirling around in a new gown. If you spy one that you like on one of them, you have to wait until they’ve turned it down before pouncing on it. But even once you’ve found

Mia Edwards one, there’s no guarantee that it’s yours; if somebody from your school has it, you’re screwed – the lady behind the till says ‘Oh sorry, that one’s taken for Chi High, but you can try for it in this colour’. You are destined for a bitter night of looking at said girl in said dress and thinking ‘it would have made me look effing majestical.’ That is sadly the way of the prom warrior. Apparently transport is important too. My friend is arriving on a horse. As in she is riding in on an actual horse. As in sitting on its back and riding it. Now that takes both effort and skill. I suppose until the day actually comes, the world will have to put up with the chimes of ‘OH MY GOD SHE IS WEARING THE SAME SHOES AS ME TO PROM… oh no wait hers are in champagne don’t worry.’ And have no fear; I will be on hand to stop any clutch bag fights over fashion mistakes, because although they have no handles I’ve heard they can break a skull.

their work and we have seen that they often diffuse situations that may otherwise have escalated. If incidents do occur, the camera recording can be used as evidence to support prosecutions and in some cases has also been used as an educational tool, to show how people behave when they are under the influence of drink or drugs.” Kim Long, City Centre Manager is pleased with the reactions: “The cameras are a strong tool and can only strengthen the ChiBAC scheme. The BID is pleased to have achieved this level of support for Chichester BID levy payers, helping to deliver safety of staff, customers and premises, which is paramount.” These body worn cameras have been very well received and in some cases the images captured have been good enough to assist police in cases where people have been arrested. As a result, most Chichester evening venues are keen that they become a permanent feature of the ChiBAC scheme.

Wellbeing Board PLANS for the delivery of key local health and social care services are on the agenda for the West Sussex Health and Wellbeing Board next week. The Board meets on Thursday January 30, at 2.15pm, at County Hall North, Chart Way, Horsham. The Board will be reviewing commissioning plans for health and social care for the next two years (2014/15 and 2015/16). The plans are being developed by West Sussex County Council and the NHS (the three West Sussex Clinical Commissioning Groups and NHS England) for the delivery of key local services, including hospital services, public health, adults’ and children’s social care, primary care and mental health. Chairman of the Board Christine Field said: “We’ll be checking that the organisations involved are working together to ensure their plans are consistent with local priorities,

as set out in the agreed Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy for West Sussex. “Key priority areas for the Board are children and families, workplace health, and dementia. We want to see how these are reflected in planning services for the future – to ensure improved health and wellbeing for West Sussex residents.” The Board will also look at how funding from the NHS for social care, called the Better Care Fund, will be allocated across West Sussex. The funding is intended to transform local services so that people are provided with better integrated care and support, including through the expansion of community-based care. To find out more and to see the agenda, visit the Health and Wellbeing Board web pages on the West Sussex County Council website at www.westsussex.gov.uk.

CAT AND RABBIT RESCUE CENTRE

Special Siamese Sisters AT THE CENTRE we don’t get too many pedigree cats and if we do they usually get rehomed fairly quickly. But our two Siamese Tessa and Sheena have been with us for nearly 8 months now. Siamese cats are characterised by their triangular head shape, large ears and elongated, slender bodies. Siamese have special personalities and we love to be able to find Tessa and Sheena a home with an owner who already knows the quirkiness of the breed. Tessa and Sheena are very special ladies that need a very caring and understanding home. These two girls arrived with us on the 29th May 2013 because their owners were moving home and couldn’t take them. During their stay with us they did get a home for just over a month but they did not settle and were returned. They are fussy eaters and they can be a little

naughty. But these two are very cute and spend most of their days curled up in bed together. Sheena is cream and grey and about 12 years old and Tessa is cream and brown and about 9 years old. They are both friendly but Sheena is a little more upfront. We really do want these sweet girls to find a loving home together. Hundreds more cats and kittens are waiting for homes now. The Rescue asks for a minimum donation of £45 for each neutered cat or older kitten

which includes vaccination, flea and worm preventative treatment, microchipping and Free PetPlan vet insurance for 4 weeks. An unneutered younger kitten is £70 including a free neutering voucher (to be neutered at The Centre) for when the kitten is old enough. Homing by appointment 7 days a week. Sussex Police report rise in domestic abuse calls over the holiday period

THE CHRISTMAS and New Year holidays were once again peak periods for reports of domestic abuse in Sussex, according to police figures. Sussex Police again dedicated 'Operation Cranberry' patrols to respond to reports of domestic abuse over the Christmas and New Year period, with officers equipped with body-worn video cameras to help secure vital evidence, as a part of the force's year-round campaign to encourage reporting of such incidents.

T h e dedicated patrols began on 20 December and continued until 1 January. But officers continue to respond to and deal with such calls the year round and the force, working with partners, also prioitises the issue through the ongoing Talk To Me campaign which encourages the reporting of domestic abuse. 979 incident calls were responded to across Sussex by Cranberry units and other officers, resulting in 257 specific crime reports of various kinds ranging from assault to harassment. The incident call numbers ranged from 61 on 21 December to 127 on New Year’s Day. The Sunday before Christmas and Christmas Day were the next highest with 75 and 85 respectively.

Domestic abuse is always treated as a priority by the force, but due to the regular increase in incidents throughout the festive season it was vital that there were sufficient resources available to manage and respond to calls for urgent help. Every day of the campaign, teams of uniformed officers worked a dedicated shift to attend incidents of domestic abuse as their sole priority over all other types of policing incidents. Officers working on Operation Cranberry were also kept up to date by intelligence briefings about victims who may be particularly vulnerable, and about specific offenders who may pose a higher risk. In addition to officers attending the homes of victims, teams of specialist detectives carry out follow-up investigations into domestic abuse crimes. Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne said: "The increase in reporting gives Sussex Police a better understanding of how widespread domestic

abuse is. I fully support the recent campaigns with partner agencies to raise awareness of the issue and it will continue to be a high priority for me." Detective Inspector Stuart Hale from the force's Protecting Vulnerable People Branch said: "During this period we received an average of 73 domestic abuse calls every day, compared with an average of 63 such calls every day for the rest of the year. "The increase over the holiday period is often down to higher alcohol consumption, combined with families spending more time than usual with each other. Relationships which are potentially abusive may come to a head at this time. "The increase in incident reporting over the past year has also been particularly noticeable, and we think it may be due at least in part to the fact that we are actively campaigning, with partner agencies, to raise awareness of this issue and the support available to vulnerable

people in dealing with it. Sussex Police continues to treat all domestic abuse incidents as a priority at all times of year and to work closely with other agencies to keep victims safe. Although the majority of domestic abuse occurs against women, nearly one in five victims of abuse is a man. Anyone who is suffering any form of abuse by a partner or family member is encouraged to report this by ringing the police on 101, or in an emergency dialling 999. For advice and support, and for further about the Talk To Me campaign focusing on domestic abuse, visit www.sussex.police.uk or call 101 or 01273 470101. To join in the Twitter debate, use #talktous. Role model is one thing but royal brands should be banned Allis Moss Writer and broadcaster

HAVE YOU got a hero? Someone who inspires you, whom you’d like to be like? Maybe from your own family or history? I know several people who say theirs is Churchill. Statesman, author, artist—if he’d lived now, some hot-shot intellectual rights lawyer would urge him to protect his brand. He’d have his own cigar label and insure his voice for fifty million. I’m a big supporter of the Queen. I think she’s great. I like Prince Charles for not being a playboy prince, for calling ugly buildings carbuncles and giving the profits from his organic veg to charity. Wills and Kate seem like a nice couple and I fell for Prince George in his blanket as soon as I saw that photo. On a more serious note, I’m grateful,

as someone whose family came to these shores some three or four generations back, for what I see as the stabilising influence of the royal family. If you’re inclined to republican leanings, I’d say you’d just end up with different elites. So, I’m for our royals. Which makes it really rather disappointing to learn in the news this week that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have followed the advice of lawyers representing the likes of David and Victoria Beckham to form a company each to protect their brand. This is the difference between celebrity royalty and members of the royal family. There should be no action, surely, that could be interpreted as creating opportunities for them to make money out of their position? If someone copies them, well, that’s what being a king or queen or an heir to the throne is all about, isn’t it? Providing a role model. If the reason was to prevent damaging images in the future, you would have thought that could be addressed on a case by case basis.

Model players Nicolas Anelka, charged by the F.A with making an offensive gesture on the pitch, was also a role model. Football has the power to heal all kinds of divisions—as well as create them—and players have a

If you want to be a local hero or just crave more attention than you’re getting, try wearing a high vis tabard responsibility well beyond knocking a ball in the back of a net. Property giant Zoopla agrees and isn’t renewing its sponsorship deal with Anelka’s Midlands club West Brom. It follows the striker making a gesture invented by a French comedian who’s been banned by his own government for being racist. Mystifying, too, is a comment from Everton’s Romelu Lukaku, an ambassador for antidiscrimination campaign group Kick It Out, that we “don’t have to make such a big thing about it.” But then Anelka was his “idol as a kid.”

Taking on water My battered-but-beloved ancient soft top Punto has been breached by the climate change monsoon. I emptied the saturated boot and found it to be like the handbag of so many of my own sex. Surprising. Wet suit many-sizes-too-small. Check. Large kite flown once in Essex with very knotted string. Check. There was even a gadget I bought years ago when I lived on an island in the Thames. The place was infested by pin head spiders. The bathroom radiator actually had a colony inhabiting it and could have featured on a David Attenborough special. Now I’ve nothing against them but I preferred to shower alone. The gadget was a hollow tube that harmlessly sucked the spider in when you pressed a button. Then you put a little cap on the tube and released your eight-legged friend somewhere else. I could do with it here in Chichester but naturally the lid was the only thing not in the boot. Contact Allis:

Believe in coincidence? Some call it synchronicity. You can read Alan Garner’s books whether you’re eight or eighty. The Owl Service is a lyrical, spooky story set in Wales, about a girl who finds a beautiful old set of crockery in the attic above her bedroom. She copies the owl designs from plate to paper. When they disappear strange things start a-happening. I put the book aside as I answered the ringing phone. My mother’s voice said: “I’ve bought you a cup in the shape of an owl.” Normally I’d have thought it a hoot. And finally… If you want to be a local hero or just crave more attention than you’re getting, try wearing a high vis tabard. I wear one cycling to the shops or work. This week alone I’ve been asked where the green beans in M & S are, ditto paint stripper in Robert Dyas and what time the train was getting in. “Do you even know why it’s been delayed?” one frustrated individual demanded. On second thoughts, maybe not…

Rotary President visits Aldingbourne Country Centre

THE ALDINGBOURNE TRUST was a proud host to the Rotary International Britain & Ireland President Nan McCreadie this week. The Trust is supported by the three local Rotary clubs: Arundel, Chichester Harbour and Bognor, and were delighted to be asked to show the RIBI President around

the Country Centre during her visit to the West Sussex Rotary clubs. The Aldingbourne Trust is a West Sussex charity that supports over 500 adults with learning disabilities across its sites in the county; many of the Trust’s clients attend the Aldingbourne Country Centre and the visit was the perfect

opportunity to show the President, the Local District Governor and members of the local Rotary clubs the charity’s work. A tour was taken around the various Social Enterprises that the Trust runs, such as Horse Rug washing service, Furniture Restoration, Wood Recycling and Workshop – where the carpentry skills and sculptures of the ‘Woodpecker Group’ were much admired. The group was also shown the Horticulture and Organics glasshouses, a particular point of interest as the charity had begun in 1978 as a caravan in a field with a view to provide horticultural experience for eight adults with learning disabilities. The large

glasshouses and expanded Country Centre show how the charity has grown immensely in 35 years, and now supports around 150 clients. One Rotarian recalled how he had been part of the party clearing the land for the newly established Trust all those years ago, and was impressed with how it had grown into the Country Centre it is today. The Rotary’s support of the Aldingbourne Trust has been very generous over that last few years. Donations have been made to buy work uniform for clients, provide sports equipment and Chichester Harbour Rotary funded a future project: a bike recycling and repair scheme. As the Country Centre is also open to the public as a visitor attraction, the Arundel Rotary Club have donated money to invest in remote control cars – which proved to be a big hit with the RIBI President, Nan McCreadie, who gladly had a go steering a car around the Conference Room and racing her fellow Rotarians. Another project that has been supported by the Rotary Clubs is the forthcoming Musical Sensory Garden, which can be used by visitors and clients at the Country Centre. The Rotary members were

able to see the charity in action and meet adults with learning disabilities working or training at the Country Centre. A presentation from the Trust’s General Manager, Peter Stanley also gave an overview of the charity and explained the plans to expand the Country Centre site which will provide a future income for the charity to ensure self sustainability in the face of government cuts. The Rotary District Governor, Mike Goodridge, said of the visit: “Thank you and the members of the Arundel Rotary Club for arranging the visit to the Aldingbourne Trust. I know that Nan enjoyed the visit and was impressed on what was being achieved and the plans for the future. Peter and his team had gone to great trouble to make the visit a memorable one and please pass on to them the thanks from us all.” For more information about the Aldingbourne trust please visit their website: www.aldingbournetrust. co.uk If you are part of a club or organisation that is interested in having a tour around the Country Centre and a Trust Talk about the charity please contact Michelle McKinley Bell on 01243 544607.

Chickens, dating and text messages

Dean Adams Broadcast Journalist I REALLY don’t agree with dragging someone’s name through the mud unless they are proven guilty. You look at the many ex-BBC employees who are currently in court on trial for all these sexual allegations – their reputations are damaged and one or two maybe, just maybe, could be innocent? Look at Jim

Davidson for example. His name has been dragged through the mud by the press with allegations, yet he has now been released and not charged. The law has to change to protect people. The reason I am also saying this is because on the front of today’s newspaper, I could have legally provided you with the name of the man who has been arrested and released on bail for the Bosham murder. This young guy may be guilty. I don’t know. But he also may be innocent and for that reason his name shouldn’t be thrown about by the media like one national newspaper has done. Let us know what you think

Vanessa Clark @vanessa_c_clark Jan 19 2014 “West Wittering beach today, just the place for a good walk”

@Chiherald

Dating or seeing somebody? SO, when does dating become ‘seeing somebody’? A friend of mine is currently on his third date and was interested to know when this becomes ‘seeing somebody’. I said if you’ve had four or five dates then

surely you are seeing that person? The official line for seeing someone seems to be: You get together, sex then eat. The official line for dating somebody is: You get together, eat then sex!

Text message hell LOL. OMG. TBH. WFH. WTF. VPL. LMFAO. PMSL. You’re probably as confused as I am if you are in your late thirties or older. These are the kind of short abbreviations I get on text messages

and I have no idea what they are. It seems these days that every text message I get I have to google (other search engines are available) what they mean! All I can say is WTF. That’s the only one I know!

Chicken or the egg?

IF YOU believe in God, then the Chicken came first. The same as Adam and Eve. An egg did not just appear and hatch. Why is there such a debate about this? I am not a believer in God but I do believe in the power of prayer and ‘something’ above. I believe we arrived from apes. So the Chicken came first. Are you with me?

Women lose five stone between them thanks to Wellbeing service THREE Chichester District women are celebrating after losing five stone between them thanks to the help they received from the Chichester Wellbeing Service, run by Chichester District Council. Kerry Whiting (44), Liz Stinton (32) and Jo Walton (29) have all been attending Wellbeing Weight Loss Workshops. New workshops have started in Selsey, Petworth, East Wittering and Chichester. The new 12-week rolling programmes are on: • Tuesdays from 1-2.30pm at the United Reformed Church in East Wittering; • Tuesdays from 7-8.30pm at Westgate Leisure Chichester; • Wednesdays from 9.30-10.30am at Petworth Children Family Centre; • Wednesdays from 1-3pm at Swanfield Community Centre; and • Thursdays from 1-3pm at Selsey Children Family Centre. The workshops involve a12 week programme to help you lose weight. They take a detailed look at your health, lifestyle and eating habits and will help you to make

small and simple changes. The workshops also challenge myths about diets as well as looking at how stress and lack of sleep may affect weight gain. Kerry, who attends the East Wittering workshops, has lost just under two stones in weight. She says: “The get together at each session is great and the groups aren’t too big so the support that you get is really good.” Liz, who joined the Selsey workshops and has lost about one stone in weight, says: “The main tool that has been really helpful for me is the food diary. Seeing what

Kaliko

I’ve eaten written down really helps and the weeks where I filled in a food diary I lost more weight than the weeks where I didn’t.” Mum of two Jo, who also joined the Selsey workshops and who lost just over two stones in 12 weeks, says: “I really agree with the way that it promotes healthy eating rather than ‘being on a diet’. For me it’s been about making small and simple changes.” Councillor Eileen Lintill, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Community Services, at Chichester District Council, says: “Many of us give dieting a go in January to try

and get rid of the excess weight we may have gained over Christmas. Research has shown that fad or low starvation-style diets only have a five per cent success rate. This means that people lose weight and then gain it again, usually gaining a bit more than they lost. They then go back to the latest diet in search of yet another solution and so the dieting rollercoaster begins. “The aim of the Wellbeing Weight Loss Workshop programme is to be able to lose weight safely and keep the weight off. The workshops can educate and empower you to make long term changes to the way

you think about food. UK unemployment rate drops to 7.1% THE UK unemployment rate has dropped to 7.1%, close to the point at which the Bank of England has said it will consider raising interest rates. The number of people out of work fell by 167,000 to 2.32 million in the three months to November, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. The ONS also said the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance fell by 24,000 to 1.25 million in December. The Bank will consider increasing rates from 0.5% when unemployment hits 7%. The drop in the number of people out of work was bigger than analysts had expected, raising the possibility that interest rates may rise sooner than previously thought. Even with a growing economy, these figures from the labour market exceeded all expectations. A fall of 167,000 in the unemployment level over three months hasn't been seen in 17 years. An unemployment rate of 7.1% has not been registered since early 2009. It is clear that the British economy is creating jobs at a much faster rate than most analysts had predicted. The Bank of England is among those who are junking their earlier forecasts. Last August the Bank expected the jobless rate to stay

above 7% till at least 2016. But now five months later it has already fallen to within a whisker of that 7% benchmark, set by the Bank as the time when they would start considering interest rate rises. The noises from policy makers suggest they won't start thinking about a rate rise for some time after that 7% rate is reached. But they have some explaining to do about where their "forward guidance" policy has now got to. The strong jobs figures pushed up the value of the pound, which rose 0.4% against the dollar to $1.6541 and 0.5% against the euro to 1.2214 euros.

Ex-footballer Collymore accuses Twitter over abusive messages FORMER footballer Stan Collymore has accused Twitter of not doing enough to combat abusive messages after he was targeted by internet trolls. The broadcaster has retweeted some of the offensive messages he has received since he suggested Liverpool striker Luis Suarez dived to earn a penalty in Saturday's match against Aston Villa. Staffordshire Police confirmed it was investigating. Twitter said it took action against targeted abuse that was reported to it. Mr Collymore, a former Liverpool player who now works as a pundit for radio station TalkSport, wrote to his 505,000 Twitter followers: "In the last 24 hours I've been threatened with murder several times, demeaned on my race, and many of these accounts are still active. Why?" He later added: "I accuse Twitter

directly of not doing enough to combat racist/homophobic/sexist hate messages, all of which are illegal in the UK." In another tweet he wrote: "Several Police forces have been fantastic. Twitter haven't. Dismayed." The 42-year-old told the BBC he received "filthy racist abuse" from two law students on Twitter two years ago, for which one was jailed and one was ordered to do community service. But he said police forces were now "banging their heads against a brick wall" because Twitter was not "furnishing them with the information" about users they now wanted to investigate.

The fall of 167,000 was the biggest drop since the autumn of 1997. "Creating jobs and getting people into employment are central to our economic plan to build a stronger, more competitive economy, so it is very encouraging news that we've seen a record-breaking rise in employment over the last three months," said Employment Minister Esther McVey. Many analysts had not expected the unemployment rate to hit 7% until much later this year, and the significant fall in the three months to November is likely to mean many will reassess their forecasts.

But the latest minutes from this month's meeting of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, also published on Wednesday, indicated that the Bank is in no rush to raise rates. Given that inflation had returned to the 2% target rate last month, and that "cost pressures were subdued... members therefore saw no immediate need to raise the Bank rate even if the 7% unemployment threshold were to be reached in the near future", the notes said. The latest figures from the ONS showed that the number of people in employment increased by 280,000 to reach 30.15 million.

£108m Big Lottery Fund for young jobless

OVER £100M of lottery funding has been set aside to help young people who have been out of employment, education or training for more than a year. The Talent Match initiative will target 18 to 24-year-olds in 21 unemployment hotspots across England. The Big Lottery Fund said it consulted a group of young people on the design of the £108m initiative. A spokesperson for the fund said Talent Match promised to

help "the very hardest to reach" young people. The Black Country will receive the largest amount from the fund. Just over £10m will be handed to Wolverhampton Voluntary Sector Council to help young people not in employment, education or training (Neets). London, Sheffield and Greater Manchester are due to receive over £9m each from the fund. Seventeen other areas will receive grants which range from £8.7m to just under £1m.

News in Brief • Police were called to a discount store to calm angry shoppers chasing 50p bargains in a closing down sale. The 99p Stores in Wrexham was temporarily closed after crowds of shoppers flocked to a half-price sale which was advertised until 28 January. However, many became angry and refused to leave when staff put prices back up to the full 99p price. The company apologised for any misunderstanding over pricing and said the shop and 30 jobs were now safe.

• A man has died at Derby’s Toyota factory after being trapped between two lorries, police said. It is not yet known whether the 56-year-old, thought to be from Suffolk, was a worker at the plant in Burnaston. Derbyshire Police said they were called to the factory at about 00:40 GMT to a report of a man trapped between two vehicles. A spokesman for the force said that there did “not appear to be any suspicious circumstances”.

• Staff on London’s Docklands Light Railway (DLR) have voted to go on strike in a dispute over pay and industrial relations. The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union said its members backed industrial action by 9-1. Staff are taking action over a series of issues including this year’s pay award, the use of agency staff and disciplinary procedures, the RMT said. Serco Docklands said it was “disappointed” by the announcement.

• A British woman who smuggled 1.4kg (3lb) of crystal methamphetamine into Indonesia has been sentenced to 14 years in prison. Former PCSO Andrea Waldeck, 43, from Gloucestershire, was found guilty of smuggling and also fined £100,000. Her lawyer previously told the court she was “a victim” of a drugs gang. Waldeck, who is originally from Talgarth in Powys, had faced a possible death sentence after being arrested at a hotel in East Java in April 2013.

Goodwood announces star House Captains for 72nd members’ meeting

GOODWOOD have announced that the star drivers that will act as House Captains for the upcoming 72nd Members’ Meeting are motor sport legends Emanuele Pirro, Jochen Mass, Anthony Reid and Nicolas Minassian.

The new meeting, which takes place on March 29-30, and has been created by Lord March as a special event for members of the Goodwood Road Racing Club, will blend sensational racing with good, old-fashioned English traditions;

starting with a school-style interHouse rivalry. German hero Mass, a winner of both a Formula 1 World Championship grand prix and the Le Mans 24 Hours, is a firm favourite at Goodwood, having wowed the crowds at both the Festival of Speed and the Revival in recent seasons. He will captain Darnley House while Frenchman Minassian, a front-runner in international sportscar racing over the past decade, fronts rival House Aubigny. Italian legend Pirro, who has taken five victories at La Sarthe himself, will lead Torbolton while British Touring Car legend Reid, who has starred in lands as far afield as Japan and Argentina, heads up Methuen. All four will take part in the Gerry Marshall Trophy for Group 1 touring cars such as the Chevrolet

Camaro, Mazda RX7 and Ford Capri, each of which will run in a genuine period livery, making it the first time cars of upto-1982 specification will have contested competitive race mileage at the ultra-fast West Sussex venue. The unique format of the 72nd Members’ Meeting, which is taking place almost 48 years after the 71st, ensures that every member present will be assigned to a House, and will have several opportunities to score points towards its overall total away from the racetrack. With off-track contests such as bar billiards, tug-of-war and even egg-and-spoon races all counting for points, and Saturday night festivities culminating in a fireworks display, the event promises to be one to remember for years to come. Anthony Reid (Methuen captain) said: “Goodwood events

are unlike any others, and as I’ve got more and more into historic racing over the past few years I’ve always enjoyed competing here because of the atmosphere and the camaraderie. I’m really looking forward to being a part of the 72nd Members’ Meeting and hopefully leading my House, Methuen, to victory.” Emanuele Pirro (Torbolton captain) said: “The history of motor sport has always fascinated me, so it’s quite obvious that I’ve loved coming to Goodwood for the Revival and the Festival of Speed for many years. The spirit of innovation in Lord March is incredible and the events feel like they’re living, breathing things, each with their own personalities. When Goodwood comes up with something new, you know it’s going to be amazing, so I’m excited about the 72nd Members’ Meeting.”

Scorsese’s best work since Goodfellas

The Wolf of Wall Street (18) Running time: 165 mins Director: Martin Scorcese Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey

Brilliantly directed, beautifully shot and superbly written, this is a riotously entertaining and frequently hilarious drama with an Oscar-worthy central performance from Leonardo DiCaprio. What’s it all about? Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Wolf of Wall Street is based on the true story of Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio), who got his first job on Wall Street at 21 and was a multi-millionaire less than five years later, balancing insanely long hours with industrial quantities of sex and drugs. After losing his job in the 1987 crash, Jordan starts his

own company with weirdo friend Donnie Azoff (Jonah Hill) and soon he’s built an empire, making millions persuading wealthy Americans to invest in dodgy companies. Along the way, Jordan trades in first wife Teresa (Cristin Milioti) for younger model Naomi (Margot Robbie) and stashes mountains of cash in a Swiss bank account with the help of Naomi’s British aunt Emma (Joanna Lumley) and

morally suspect Swiss banker Jean Jacques Saurel (Jean Dujardin). However, Jordan’s activities eventually come to the attention of FBI agent Patrick Denham (Kyle Chandler) and it isn’t long before he’s poised for a fall. The Good DiCaprio is sensational as Belfort, delivering what is possibly his best performance to date: it’s such a compelling, magnetic turn that

we almost forget what a scumbag Belfort is and start to feel sorry for him. Almost. The supporting cast are on equally good form: Matthew McConaughey steals a handful of early scenes as Belfort’s cokeworshipping mentor Mark Hanna, Jonah Hill (also giving a career best performance) is splendidly sleazy as Donnie, Rob Reiner is wonderful as Jordan’s angry dad Max and Margot Robbie is terrific as Naomi, more than holding her own against her testosterone-fuelled surroundings in a role that should see her moving on to greater things. Scorsese (now 72) directs with a sense of energy that would shame any number of younger directors, aided, as ever, by whip-smart editing from Thelma Schoonmaker (74) - essentially, this is a return to the form of Goodfellas, both stylistically and thematically, only with the added topical resonance of the recent banking crisis. Needless to say, it also has a superb soundtrack and is beautifully shot by cinematographer Rodrigo Pieto.

The Great The film’s biggest surprise is that it’s also unexpectedly hilarious – a sequence involving a handful of past-their-best Quaaludes (hypnotic sedatives) and a sports car will make you laugh harder than any US comedy of the past year, with DiCaprio revealing a hitherto unsuspected gift for physical comedy that rivals the greats. Other highlights include: an amusingly awkward scene between DiCaprio and Lumley on a London park bench, Donnie’s jaw-droppingly obnoxious behaviour both at the office (eating a co-worker’s goldfish to make a point) and at parties, and Jordan’s petulant first meeting with Agent Denham. Worth seeing? Masterfully directed and brilliantly acted, The Wolf of Wall Street is a treat from start to finish and Scorsese’s best film since Goodfellas. Unmissable, and one of the best films of the year.

Sky Diary February 2014 By Peter Littlejohns The first week of February will be the last chance for a few months to spot the fading Mercury, being low down in the SW in the evening twilight with the Moon just above it on the 1st. Venus is now a beacon in the E rising a couple of hours before the Sun and changing from a thin crescent shape to nearly half phase through the month, with the Moon being very close by on the 26th. Mars rises in the E around 23:00 just a few degrees to the left of Virgo's brightest star Spica. In the S the brilliant Jupiter is just moving into the stars of the Milky Way and setting at 05:30. For main course, we chose two of their signature dishes; the Chicken chimichanga and Fajitas. The Chimichanga is a hearty parcel of chilli chicken, Mexican cheese and refried beans with a side dish of Mexican rice, sour cream, guacamole and black beans. The fajita offers an interactive dining experience with a selection of warm flour tortillas, hot salsa,

tender marinated chicken fillets with pepper and onion and a choice of guacamole, chopped fresh tomato, Mexican cheese and sour cream so you can make your own fajita combination. Humble roast dinner tops list of most-loved comfort foods

THE TRADITIONAL roast dinner has been unveiled as Britain’s best-loved comfort food. The classic meal topped the list of food which Brits turn to most to keep spirits high during the cold months. Another old favourite, shepherd’s pie, was runner up in the study, with chips, lasagne and spaghetti bolognese completing the top five comfort foods warming British bellies this winter. The research, which was commissioned by the AXA ‘little things that mean a lot’ campaign,

also placed macaroni cheese, cheese on toast and a good dollop of mashed potato high on our cold weather menu. And the study of 5,000 people saw cottage pie, bangers and mash and chilli con carne continuing to warm us year after year. But the humble bacon sandwich managed just 16th in the list, and the ‘Full English’ fry up only just crept in at 18th. Nutritionist Angela Dowden who worked with AXA on the campaign, said: “People think ‘comfort food’ means ‘naughty

and out of bounds food’, but the act of indulging in favourite culinary treats is one of the little things that means a lot in life. “The top comfort foods can actually be pretty healthy – a roast dinner supplies at least a couple of your five a day and can be a good source of protein and iron, whilst shepherd’s pie provides zinc and protein, and doesn’t have to be laden with saturated fat and calories if you choose leaner lamb mince. “Diets that cut out the enjoyment and ban favourite foods aren’t sustainable and having modest portions of comfort foods could actually make it more likely that you’ll stick to a balanced diet and lifestyle overall. “There are ways to tweak comfort food meals to make them healthier – with a roast dinner for example, simply cutting excess fat off the meat and adding an extra portion of vegetable will help. If chips are your weakness, opt for oven chips over deepfried and with shepherd’s pie add plenty of carrot.”

The study emphasised our tendency to turn to food to alleviate feelings of doom and gloom. In fact, one in six (17%) stated that comfort food alleviates depression, feelings of loneliness and combats homesickness for them. Chocolate topped the list as our favourite comfort snack when feeling blue, with almost a quarter of women citing it as their top pick me up. Psychologist Donna Dawson added: “What we forget is that the food we eat is more than a practical matter of sustenance for survival; specific foods also collect emotional associations over our lifetime and they become a little thing that means a lot in improving our mood. “Traditionally, a roast dinner is the one meal when everyone in the family sits down together, even if it is only once a week. “Alongside Shepherd’s pie, a roast dinner is what we remember our parents cooking for us while we were growing up, and we

associate these particular meals with shared family time, happy memories, and feeling safe, secure and cared for. “So when we are older, every time we have these meals again we will re-experience the same feelings of comfort, warmth and satisfaction.” Britain’s Biggest Comfort Foods 1. Reducing your risks of cancer

CRUCIFEROUS vegetables such as broccoli, brussels sprouts and cabbages contain many phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals. Studies over many years have indicated that there is a link between the consumption of these type of vegetables reducing the risk of multiple types of cancer including breast cancer. However, eating broccoli as we know it is not the most powerful tool. A newly sprouting broccoli seed/ broccoli sprout that is specifically 5-6 days old contains over 100 times more sulforaphane than the mature plant and one of the key components of broccoli sprouts is a compound called sulforaphane. It is sulforaphane that inhibites the growth of human

Denise Kelly Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist breast cancer cells, leading to the death of the cancer cell. It has also been indicated that a potential use of this compound is as a chemotherapeutic agent in cancer treatment. Can you picture the medical mainstream hooking up sulforaphane drips instead of the chemical concoction IV drips? Wishful thinking, almost comical and highly unlikely… which saddens me massively. So why is sulforaphane such

The power of sprouted foods

Consuming sprouts (not the type you have with your Christmas dinner!) is like eating live vegetable food.Think for yourself, how nutrientdense a growing food could be…

a powerful protective agent? First of all, it acts as a “signaling” molecule. Once inside the cell, sulforaphane switches on over 200 specific genes that may be “asleep” due to toxicity, poor health and aging factors. Once these genes are turned back on, they produce special detoxification enzymes and antioxidant enzymes. One of the antioxidants that it helps produce is glutathione, which is a powerful and primary antioxidant that is produced inside the cell. Glutathione actually bathes the inside of the cell, protecting it against damaging free radicals and therefore reducing the inflammatory response.

It is said that sprouts ‘represent the miracle of birth’.They are in the true sense, super foods. They are alkaline, whole, pure, and natural foods. We should take full advantage of them.

Secondly, sulforaphane has been found to cause cell death to cancer cells by inducing specific enzymes and proteins that cause the cancer cells to die. It also decreases the expression of estrogen receptors, which is so important for several types of breast cancers. However, the benefit of adding this super sprout to your diet does not stop there. Multiple studies have shown promise of broccoli sprouts and sulforaphane and their effect on cancers that affect the prostate, bladder, liver, ovaries, colon and lungs. We have long thought that we inherited diseases from our ancestors as a result of the genetic imprints. But an emerging new

science called epigenetics helps us to see that we do have control over the destiny of our health. An improved diet that is very high in antioxidants and phyto chemicals like sulforaphane can actually signal the genes and the DNA to be expressed in a healthy way instead of being expressed in a disease. Frighteningly women born now, have an average risk of 12.2 percent (often expressed as “1 in 8”) of being diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in their lives. By becoming informed about the latest research and making small changes in your diet, (like adding broccoli sprouts), you may have a better opportunity to impact those statistics in a positive way. Life is for thriving…

Average Brit rates fitness level at 46%

THE TYPICAL BRIT rates their fitness level at just 46%, a study has revealed. Research among 2,000 adults found most live an ‘unhealthy’ lifestyle amid a dizzy round of too much booze and endless high-fat food. Worryingly, a large percentage

went as far as to admit they found it tough to summon enough energy to complete ‘everyday tasks’. It also emerged one in three of the population do no exercise whatsoever. While results emphasised the lack of priority given towards

personal health, the average person studied spent four times more on their car than they did on their health in 2013. The study, commissioned by Holland and Barrett to mark the launch of their Good life MOT, found Brits spent £416 on their car in the last 12 months but just £101 on anything relating to their health. A spokesperson for Holland and Barrett said: “The results are surprising in how little people invest in their health. “Low fitness levels are clearly having an impact on people’s lives too, whether it’s their energy levels or overall body confidence. “Making the choice to prioritise your health and exploring some of the small changes you can make day to day could have a big impact in helping people feel healthier and happier in 2014.” More than one in four of those who took part said they had been forced to endure negative comments about their size or weight from other people. The research also revealed how a lack of energy and a low fitness level affects our ability to get stuck into every day jobs. Around one in two said they found this a struggle, with regular

household chores bringing on fatigue that caused respondents to doubt the shape they were in. Additionally the study found the typical adult is currently battling against two ‘injuries’ or aches and pains that hamper them in everyday life. The results also revealed an inclination to place physical appearance higher on our list of priorities than health and fitness. Four in ten (41%) said they classed the way they look as more important than how healthy they actually were. And a similar number said they didn’t take their health very seriously while one in four even admitted they have gone downhill and are currently noticeably unhealthier than they were 12 months ago. Perhaps no surprises then that 57% say their fitness level affects their confidence – but that doesn’t stop the fifth who smoke regularly despite knowing the long-term dangers, and the same number that routinely overindulge in alcohol. One quarter of those studied described their body weight as ‘unhealthy’ but when asked about their future plans said they ‘cannot bring themselves to change it’.

The Holland and Barrett spokesman added: “It seems we are more readily prioritising material aspects or focusing more on appearance but perhaps forgetting to take care of ourselves. “Whether it’s in neglecting our long-term health or avoiding worrying about the future or simply in not making the time to think about what more we could do to get the benefits of good health.” Top 10 reasons for low fitness 1. Fashion & Lifestyle Almost half of children receive presents on a sibling’s birthday Millions of children are enjoying a ‘bonus birthday’ each year – because their parents don’t want them to feel left out on a sibling’s big day, a study has revealed. Researchers found almost half of children are having two or more ‘birthdays’ a year as parents buy them presents on their sibling’s birthdays, as well as their own. On top of that, instead of saving all the presents for the birthday boy or girl, grandparents and even family friends are also getting in on the act and buying gifts for each child on family birthdays. Not wanting the others to feel left out was the main reason for buying presents for everyone, as well as believing it’s not fair if their children have to sit and watch while their sibling gets to open everything. But the gesture has backfired for some, with a fifth admitting their children now expect to receive a gift on every single birthday a brother or sister celebrates. The study of 2,000 parents found that 45% of buy their children birthday presents on their siblings’ birthdays, as well as their actual birthday. And half of those admitted they can’t bear the thought of one of their children feeling left out while their other youngster has the birthday limelight.

Researchers found women hate the thought of their other half knowing they have to pluck, wax and shave their bodies – and as such keep hair removal from toes, chin, body and bikini line a deeply hidden secret. In addition, removing hard skin from feet and maintaining a hairless upper lip by eradicating any sign of a moustache are also kept private. While the large majority would never let on to their fella if they were wearing body slimming underwear. Siobhan McDermott, General Manager for feelunique which conducted the study of 2,000 women said: “This study shows just how private women are about their beauty regime – no one wants their partner to think they aren’t naturally beautiful with wonderful smooth skin. “As such, women go to great

lengths to hide certain aspects of their beauty regime from their partner, conducting a multitude of preening tasks behind closed doors. “When ladies get more comfortable with a partner they might let a few of their secrets slip, but two thirds simply feel they are being more lady-like by tending to themselves in private.” The study shows many ladies would hate their partner to know they had to remove hairs from their noses on occasion. While others don’t want him to know they often treat spots with toothpaste, or whiten their teeth. Many girls claim their other half has no idea they wear chicken fillets in their bra on a night out, or have to exfoliate daily. And for those women who like to maintain a younger appearance, no mention is made of the antiaging moisturisers and anticellulite creams they apply on a nightly basis. Having eyelashes and eyebrows tinted, cleansing and toning and the application of face packs are other beauty essentials the average man has no clue their partner bothers with.

Two thirds of ladies polled reckon their partner is blissfully unaware of what is involved in their beauty routine – with a third keeping it all a closely guarded secret. In fact, a third of women reckon their partner would be absolutely mortified if he knew the true extent of what took place behind the bathroom door for half an hour every day. And 35% of ladies believe their boyfriend or husband would be completely turned off if he saw them doing their most intimate pampering. A fifth of women say it doesn’t

matter how comfortable they get with a partner, they will never ever let him know how much effort goes into looking good. The spokeswoman for feelunique comments: “There are many women who never want to get so comfortable with a partner they divulge everything about their beauty routine. “And many intend to remain tight-lipped about their bathroom habits forever more. “It can be nice for a man to think his other half looks amazing without knowing how much effort it took.”

24th - 30th January

Horoscopes from Kimi Aries 21 March – 20 April This is one of those rare moments in life when, if you screw up, it is viewed as some sort of bohemian success. Just go with the flow and make the most of it. Just be careful not to let it go to your head or you could be in danger of alienating those you care for most. Taurus 21 April – 21 May Friends and friendship groups will be occupying your thoughts this week. They may need your support or conversely you may need theirs. At work you are feeling a little jaded and undervalued at the moment, hang on in there your time will come. Romance is headed your way; it won’t hit with a bang but remember from little acorns! Gemini 22 May – 21 June As much as you try to get your head down this week you cannot stop your mind wandering. You are beginning to ask big questions, what do I want, where am I

going. The answer is whatever and wherever you want. Focus your thoughts, make plans, and seek out training if necessary and the world is your oyster! Cancer 22 June – 22 July Things are looking pretty good for you this week. Your financial situation, though not abundant, is looking decidedly better than it has for some time. And if you learn to work with the directive forces rather than against them you will feel healthier, happier and more confident too. And as like attracts like be prepared for a fun time! Leo 23 July – 22 Aug Your thoughts turn to travel this week and combining this with some form of self education, self discovery, exploration or fulfillment; or all of the above. Remember though, however intrinsically fulfilling these activities are they will need paying for. So keep a weather eye on your finances. Although man cannot live by bread alone he cannot live without it!

Virgo 23 Aug – 23 Sept There’s a fine line between efficient multi tasker and headless chicken. Make sure you are the former rather than the latter by timetabling well and delegating skillfully. By this I mean make sure your successes are visible. Do this and you can’t fail to impress. A promotion or even a move to a rival employer may be on the cards! Libra 24 Sept – 23 Oct Family and home are at the forefront of your mind this week. You are very much the linchpin that ties family and friends together. You may find yourself organizing dinner parties, lunch parties or just impromptu get togethers. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the tasks will be onerous, they will be fun. But for balance leave a little me time! Scorpio 24 Oct – 22 Nov Party, party, party! The next few weeks

should bring lots of invitations and fun. Luckily, at the moment, you have lots of energy too so can keep up with the pace. Go on and spread the love! If you are with a partner you are in for a hot time. If not, you could be in for a hot time! Sagittarius 23 Nov – 21 Dec When you’re on form no one can refuse you anything and you are definitely on form this week. Now I am not telling you to be devious but this would be a good time to use your charm to get that promotion you want, encourage your nearest and dearest to commit or diplomatically ask for whatever else your heart desires! Capricorn 22 Dec – 20 Jan Your finances are looking in better shape than they have for some time. And all this comes about quite by chance. An unexpected bonus, gift or win is on the cards. You are still feeling a little sluggish though so get a few early nights, in bed

not in the wine bar! If single you are in for some excitement! Aquarius 21 Jan – 19 Feb The festive season is focusing your mind on new beginnings and change. This is great because this is not about knee jerk New Year resolutions but well thought out plans for change. You certainly have the motivation just be careful to pace yourself! A good week, not necessarily for meeting the love of your life but definitely some serious flirting! Pisces 20 Feb – 20 March This week’s about adventure and romance. You’re natural desire for excitement and stimulation if not satisfied can lead you to become introverted and discontent. Get out the travel brochures and start planning the next adventure. If you have a partner you will find your enthusiasm rubs off. If single then travel plans could just bring someone new into your life!

Falmouth Tall Ships Regatta 2014 ONE OF THE world's most spectacular maritime events is attracting vessels - and spectators - from across the globe with more than 35 magnificent sailing ships already signed up for this summer's historic Falmouth to Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta. With the prospect of four days of colourful celebrations in the stunning Cornish host port from 28th to 31st August, hotels and holiday providers are reporting early bookings from as far afield as Australia and Canada ahead of this, the first ever internationally renowned Tall Ships Regatta to take place solely in English waters. The 2008 Tall Ships event attracted over 100,000 visitors to Falmouth, with £12 million of direct expenditure generated for the local economy and media descending from across the world to cover the festivities. The thousands who witnessed these magnificent vessels setting sail from Falmouth Harbour

in 2008, escorted by a flotilla of hundreds of little ships and spectator craft, past Henry VIII's twin castles into Falmouth Bay on the first leg of the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta, will know just why the historic port will be inundated with visitors for this year's festival. From the huge four-masted Portuguese square-rigger Santa Maria Manuela, among nine of the mighty A Class Tall Ships taking part, to the Caribbean-based ketch Ebb Tide to the little gaff cutter Eve of St Mawes - the list goes on. New signings in the next few weeks will include some of the giants of the ocean, all eager to take part in what will be the biggest international sailing event in the South West of England in 2014. For many this will be the chance not just to breathe in maritime history as they join the celebrations aboard the ships and around the iconic harbour town but to become part of the Regatta itself as trainee crew-members.

Budding sailors of all ages and abilities are signing up for the experience of a lifetime - to play an active part in an epic race from Falmouth to the Isle of Wight and finally sailing up the Thames for further festivities in majestic Royal Greenwich. Eighteen-year-old Siri Taxbro from Norway, summing up her experience of sail training, says, "I felt like I'd seen more of the world in a couple of weeks than I'd seen in 18 years. The friendships, the people, the mood, the crew, the food, the experiences - everything thrilled me." Sam Groom, Festivals and Events Manager at Visit Cornwall, Cornwall Development Company's tourism service, headed the Falmouth Tall Ships organising team six years ago. She says, "We know from 2008 and the meticulous planning that went into

Make a New Year's resolution to improve your home for 2014

DO YOU find yourself making the same New Year’s resolution every year, only to break it by January 5th? Are you tired of resolving to quit smoking or exercise more, knowing full well you’ll do neither?

This year, make a New Year’s resolution you’re more likely to stick to – and one that will benefit the whole family. Leading housebuilder Taylor Wimpey is urging people to prove

that home really is where the heart is, by making a New Year’s resolution to do something that improves your property. Jason Stokes, Regional Sales & Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey, says: “Home is the place where we spend most of our time, so making a commitment this New Year to do something around the house is really worthwhile. “Whether it’s finally clearing out that junk room, tackling a DIY project you’ve been putting off for years or simply having loved ones over more often, making a New Year’s resolution for your home will be much easier to see through – and the whole family will really

reap the rewards.” Householders are being invited to consider one of these New Year’s resolutions for the home: • De-clutter your home by sorting through your old clothes and household items and donating them to charity • Take more photos of your friends and family and put them on display around your house • Spend more time with your children by leaving work at the office and setting evenings and weekends for quality family time • Re-decorate a room to give it a fresh lease of life. New homes from Taylor Wimpey are an ideal blank canvas on which to create your own interior designs. • Give your home a deep clean to get it looking its best for 2014 • Make 2014 the year that you get onto the property ladder or move up to a bigger home. Don’t forget to visit your local Taylor Wimpey development to see the range of

homes available! • Invite friends and loved ones over for dinner more often • Get a better night’s sleep by taking any gadgets out of your bedroom • Make sure you’ve got the best mortgage deal available by speaking to a financial advisor about the rates currently on offer. • Go green at home by introducing some simple measures around the house such as a water-efficient shower head or draught-proofing doors, keyholes and letterboxes. New homes from Taylor Wimpey include a range of energy saving features as standard. Taylor Wimpey is building high-quality new houses and apartments at developments across the region, with a range of homebuyer incentives available to help every purchaser including the Government’s Help to Buy initiative. THIS YEAR Golf At Goodwood celebrates 100 years of classic golf on the award-winning Downs Course which was originally designed by five times Open Champion James Braid who played a challenge match against great rival Ted Ray at the official opening in 1914. It was early in 1912 that Lord Bernard Gordon Lennox, third son of the Duke of Richmond who owned the magnificent West Sussex estate, engaged Braid to design and produce a course of the highest quality. Moreover, the search for perfection has continued over the years as other major golfing figures have made their contribution to the status of the Downs Course. Henry Cotton, three times Open Champion was consulted on design aspects in 1964 as was Fred Hawtree in 1967, a member of the distinguished dynasty of

golf course architects. They both played their part in the history of Golf At Goodwood. JAMES BRAID Braid was undoubtedly one of the greatest golfers of all time and most influential figures in golf course design in the UK. He was part of the Great Triumvirate alongside Harry Vardon and JH Taylor and in 1912 Braid already had a formidable reputation in professional golf and was making a successful transition to a career in golf course design. The classic downland course now measures 7,104 yards and displays many of Braid’s original trademark design features such as the “dog leg”. The shrewd Scot believed that each hole should have two ways to play it, the more difficult of which rewarded the golfer with the opportunity to pick up a shot when played correctly.

Braid also introduced blind tee shots to test commitment and maintain the mystery of the hole and clever positioning of bunkers pulled forward of greens and landing zones still perplex golfers today when judging distance. Braid’s layout stood the test of time for almost 90 years, then in 2003 the Club’s new Chairman Lord March commissioned Howard Swan former President of the British Institute of Golf Course Architects to transform the downs Course to elevate it to a worldclass test of golf. The brief was to preserve the timeless features of Braid’s design and further enhance the course to make Goodwood one of the finest golf courses in England without compromising its natural beauty. The transformation of the Downs Course included the creation of six new holes from 1 to 3 and 16 to 18 which

lengthened the course to 7,104 yards from the championship tees. Elsewhere, tees, greens and bunkers were rebuilt on the remaining 12 holes to incorporate a contemporary automatic irrigation system and improve sight lines as the course meanders through dips and Hillocks of the downland below the world famous Goodwood Race Course. TOP 100 GOLF COURSES Today, the Downs Course is ranked by Golf World Magazine as one of England’s Top 100 golf courses putting it in the top 5% of courses in the country and Goodwood is also been voted in the Top 20 Stay and Play golf venues in the UK by Golf Monthly Magazine. To mark the 100 year celebration of the Downs Course Golf At Goodwood will be staging a series of unique one day golf events throughout the season.
