Azam Kamal’s nazm, tributes to Zahoor Ahmad Faateh By Syed Afsar Sajid

N

oted poet Azam Kamal has recently published a collection of his nazm titled Ashk Muskaratay Hain, his fourth publication. The other two books being reviewed here highlight the person and art of popular poet, scholar, and educationist from Taunsa Sharif (DG Khan), Prof. Zahoor Ahmad Faateh.

Ashk Muskaratay Hain Azam Kamal writes both poetry and prose. His earlier three publications Saahil ki Bheegi Rait (verse collection), Ghazal-eNau (an experiment in the domain of ghazal), and Lauh-e-Urooz (prose) speak well for his literary qualities. As for his instant work, his preamble explains the motif of the poems included in it. Environmental eventualities do affect the sensibilities of poets, artists, scholars, and intellectuals. 48 I July 28, 2013

How can a poet keep himself aloof from what is happening around him – injustice, inhumanity, moral waywardness, incongruities of sorts, want, violence, hunger, and all that! The author avers that the book is a lament, as it were, of this sordid state of affairs. Besides its self-written foreword, the book contains fifty-one poems inclusive of two devotional poems. The poems are well-structured; their eponymous titles (like Adhoorapan, Ek nai Karbala, Nabeena logoN ki basti, Hum keh thahray Ashk Muskaratay HaiN ajnabi, Doosra chehra, By Azam Kamal Karb, In khwaboN ko Publisher: Kamal Publishers Lahore - Kharian raushan kardo, Gulab rut – Kamalia ki saza, FasloN ka pul, Pages: 128; Price: Rs.220/Khwab kaisay daikhuN ga, Hairat, Intezar, Apni variety of their substance. zaat ka aks, Ta’aqub, Pagal kaun?, Manzar, to cite a few) The centrepiece of the work is Ashk adequately represent the range and Muskaratay Hain: WahshatoN kay

(The last line of the poem ‘Apni Laash kay matam par’ has been deliberately omitted here as its third syllable jars with the fourth disturbing its metric rhythm). The poem seeks to sum up the ironic situation (and for that matter a paradoxical one also!) at hand that appals and agonizes the hypertensive persona of these poems. Free verse has its own invisible artistic pattern. Whereas it allows its practitioner sufficient space to vacillate betwixt the uncharted extremities of a given discourse, it also sets a curb on his liberty with diction because grafting of words like thailay, saagar, jeewan, anddharti on the standard Urdu text, if done mechanically, would often tend to mar its poetic

Faateh Ka Kaif-e-Ghazal

Shabbir Naqid has rightfully projected and idealized his teacher and mentor Zahoor Ahmad Faateh in this book, the biography of the man who lost his eyesight early in life, as narrated by the author, is a tale of heroism in the face of stark existential realities. The subsequent chapters of the book relate Zahoor Ahmad Faateh’s art as a poet of fine aesthetic sensibilities, discernment and selfawareness, optimism, pensiveness, romance, and humanitarianism. In the remaining chapters he carries out a survey of Faateh’s style and contemporaneity, his nonmelancholic (tarbiya) poetry, a finetuning of his art, and his versatility and self-exaltation (ta’alli) as a poet. A random selection from his verse would illustrate this contention:

Nazish-e-Arbab-e-Adab Muhammad Ismail Faiz Hadi Taunsvi, a contemporary but younger poet from Taunsa Sharif, has penned a panegyric in verse comprising some 65 poems, dedicated to his mentor and ideal Zahoor Ahmad Faateh, under the above title. The book carries a foreword from Dr. Khawaja Muhammad Zakariya in which he has deservingly lauded Faateh’s poetic ingenuity as well as faith in human values: Na kyuN afkaar-e-Faateh par sada nazaN rahay Hadi/K usnay anjuman may fikr-o-fun ka noor baNta hai Uskay liyay aizaz bahut hai yahi Hadi/Woh zeenat-e-fun nazish-e-arbabe-adab hai
