You were front man of a band that got pretty big for a while; Million dead. You guys spilt in 05 correct? What happened there? There is, alas, nothing particularly exciting to say. We toured a lot together, and over time we fell out with each other pretty badly. It was a pretty mundane and depressing way for a band to come to an end, but such is life. It was a shame at the time, but looking back now, things have come good for me, so I’m not regretful. With your popularity, it’s to be expected that you will appeal to a wider audience. I feel that sometimes the music can suffer and can lose what it once stood for. Do you feel your music is still very much honest and are you still as passionate as you’ve always been? Yes. I’m very particular about keeping to the same ideals and work ethic that I started with. I know what you mean about things getting diluted; but at the same time there’s a lot of people on the punk scene who just want ownership, and stop liking something when it gets big because it no longer flatters their scenesterism to be into it. That’s a mindset I find pretty irritating, personally, because it has nothing to do with music and everything to do with people trying to be cool, which was always not what punk was about, to my mind. So the new album is done, or almost done. What’s it called and when is it due out? The album is going to be called “England Keep My Bones”, which is a Shakespeare line. I had a lot of trouble getting the title right for this one, but after some help from an English teacher friend of mine, I’m really happy with that. It’s out June 6th, and I for one can’t wait. You’ve been on a revival tour before with the likes of Chuck Ragan and Ben Nichols (amongst others) and I hear said tour is coming to the UK this fall. Will you be involved? It breaks my heart to say that I won’t be on the first Revival Europe – schedules have clashed, and despite Chuck really busting my balls about it, there’s no way I can be involved. But Revival is something with a long future ahead of it, and I will definitely be back on that bus in coming years. How stoked would you be to hear one of your songs used on the sound track in a BMX video? Very stoked, haha, it’d make me feel cooler than I’m used to! Have you ever ridden a BMX? Or indulged in any other extreme sports? Skateboarding perhaps? I once stood on a skateboard for about five minutes, but I fell off and fucked my back pretty badly. I think I’m not cut out for that kind of thing, haha – loads of my friends were into BMX and skateboarding, but I’d sit on the sidelines and practice playing my guitar. You may or may not know this but Winchester has one of the most thriving BMX communities in the country with people travelling from across the world to ride the infamous jumps at Bar End. Were you aware of that? I didn’t know it had a world reputation, I knew there was stuff going on down there. That’s very cool, go Winchester! I know for a fact that your music goes down well with BMX riders. I think it’s the DIY style and the sort of lifestyle your lyrics speak of. Do you see any similarities between your music and BMX? Or punk rock and BMX? I think the whole BMX and skateboarding community has been historically linked with punk rock, especially in the USA, and I can see why. There’s an outsider thing that goes with both, a sense of a community against the grain. Onto your music; I’ve been a fan for a while now and to me it seems as if on the earlier songs it was more about your self as an acoustic performer but with the newer material, it seems as if the band are of equal importance. Would you say that was the case? There’s definitely been a progression of sorts – when I started doing this it was largely just me and my guitar. I always wanted to have a band to play with – the very first recordings I put out have drums, bass and keys on them. But in practical terms I didn’t get the opportunity to play a lot with a band, and with the right band, for a while. Having said all that, I think the last record I did (Poetry Of The Deed) marks something of a watershed for that approach. The new album I’m working on right now, while it still has some loud rocking sections, is a little more folky, a little more acoustic. That feels like more my natural territory. The F.T.H.C logo seems to have gone down well… I’ve seen a lot of tattoos. For those unaware, what does it stand for and where did it come from? It stands for “Frank Turner Hard Core”. Historically, a lot of the early punk and hardcore scenes used to tag up using the design of the cross with four letters to denote your area – LAHC, NYHC, ECHC (east coast), UKHC and so on. It’s kind of difficult to have a logo that makes sense if you’re a solo artist; I did up the FTHC thing one day as a joke and it’s really stuck, I’m pretty attached to it .now, haha, even though it is basically an arcane music geek joke.

The process included carefully extracting pigments from a rare snail shell – a visual link that has been included in Purpl’s branding from the very beginning. Now the question is, have Purpl found an equally exclusive set of riders for their team? And how have they coped with the terrible English winter and the terrible English public…?

Why set up a clothing brand? We believe that it’s important to look and feel good and clothing plays a big part in this. Above all our goal is to make good quality clothes that people like. We needed to create a brand that would encompass everything we love, whether that be fashion, photography, printing or film making etc. We also wanted to give people around us a creative platform to express themselves and we think the best way to do this is through collaborations. Why have contributors? Our vision is to have talented individuals that all help contribute towards the brand in their own way. Our roots are in street culture and we have people from a variety of backgrounds that share our passion, contributing artwork, handmade clothing, images etc. We are extremely proud to have such a diverse group people helping develop and represent our products and vision worldwide.

What are the reasons behind the name? It’s simple and easy to remem ber. Why a signatu re logo? We wanted a logo that had a personal feel and would stand out in the stree twear market. A ques tion I’m sure you get a lot – why Purp and not Purple? l Simply to fur th er make the br and unique and memorable. Any big plans for the rest of 2011? We’re work ing on a DVD this year, filming is underway alrea dy and we’d lik e it to be out by the end of th e year. O ther wi se we’re aiming to really develop our clothing ra nge, continue networ king an d get Purpl into stores – both in the UK and ab road.
Long term, we would love to be able to manufac ture all our clothing in the UK, wi th in-house produc tion all under on e roof. Also, when we get to the stage wher e we have our own wareho use, we would like to create a space for peop le involved wi th Purpl to expres themselves. The first time I ever went to Lonnie’s trails, in Southern California, I thought to myself . . . “This place looks like the moon”. Since then, everyone has seen tons of coverage from this, now deceased, West Coast hot spot. Most of the time there are huge sessions, and crowds of people. I’m not quite sure why, but during my second visit to Lonnie’s, I felt that I really needed to try and take a picture, that reminded me of the first feelings I had upon seeing this dirt oasis. Lucky for me, I happened to be with Chase Hawk on such a day. No masses of people, only the elements that make this what it is. Sure there are no houses and white fences on the moon, but all of the shapes and shadows of the lips and landings, are quite cosmic. Add in some sheer grace from Mr Hawk, and I had an image that I will always be grateful for. Cheers!

Just a few refinements on the Deluxe seat from last years version. This one basically features a neater and bigger logo. This is the 2011 Deluxe tech II frame and it’s based around last years model but with a few extra touches. Most notably the front end of this frame features a new double-butted toptube and an ‘asymmetrically quadbutted downtube’… What that means is that at the ends of the downtube, the tube-wall is thicker for the lower half for durability, and thinner at the top to save a few ounces. Available in Tan, Cleancoat, or Matt Black and in 3 sizes; 20,7”, 21” and 21.25”

Even trail builders get the blues ing We had a tough one this year. We mean small us. Us as a country. Or even ‘us’ as that e. group of trail builders to be more precis think Basically, the weather sucked and I don’t to many sets of trails were remotely close er being finished by the time the warm weath hit. of the January and February were cold. A lot ground was frozen and therefore not much was done. and March was a good one. It started of wet March it seems that a lot of work got done in but mother nature took a turn and come late March, the sun was shining and the temperatures were up… And it only got worst. on Normally a dry spell in late March is comm and it’s not uncommon to hear of trail riders their across the country getting a sample of winters work but what followed was totally 83

And May wasn’t much d 2 days of rain early on is all we were tease with. e, It’s now late May and as far as I’m awar rain we’ve still only had maybe 4 or 5 days of trails in the past 8 week s and a lot of sets of are still in need of a lot of water. on Looking out of my window as I write this, th and Tuesday the 24 of May, I see blue skies rain a yellow ball. I know the trails need more In and I know it’s not coming any time soon. fact the weatherman warned us of a heat wave this week. Awesome!
