Sheryl Louise Yoga, teaches Slow Hatha Yoga classes, Restorative Practices and Workshops (with Nicola Tew) on ‘Understanding Ourselves Through the Lens of the Chakras’ at The Lotus Retreat in Faringdon. How do you feel whole, when it feels like your life is in fragments? Life sometimes feels so fast, almost like we’re on a conveyor belt, unable to stop, to pause and to step off. The only option is to keep moving forward, regardless of if it feels like we’re somehow on the wrong conveyor belt. This was what my life used to feel like. My conveyor belt came to a grinding holt, through sickness, anxiety and depression time and time again. Patching myself up, making quick fixes and finding distractions. Plastering a big smile on my face and pretending everything was OK. But it wasn’t and the question I kept asking myself was ‘am I on the wrong conveyor belt’? Like there was somehow something wrong with me, something that needed fixing. So, do we need fixing? Are we broken? I don’t believe we are, yoga teaches us that we are WHOLE. But how do you feel whole, when you feel like your life is in fragments? It begins by slowing down, by pausing and spending time with ourselves. Time without thought or judgement. It’s in that interoceptive space that we can develop a sense of awareness and see beyond the thoughts in our heads. Slow Hatha Yoga and Restorative practices are one way we can learn how to slow down, pause and develop this awareness. They are practices suitable for all abilities. I call them practices as that is exactly what they are. The Yoga Sutras – 1:2 describe Yoga as ‘Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind’ and this to me is what yoga is truly about. It is so much more than an exercise regime. You don’t need to be flexible or fit, you just need to be willing to spend time with yourself. To spend time in that pause watching and observing. So, no, I wasn’t on the wrong conveyor belt. This conveyor belt is my life and each event, wave of anxiety and depression that I’ve met along the way has bought me to where I am today. For that I am truly grateful, and I would not change a single thing. Life is about living, loving and learning! Taking a pause and taking time to be with yourself, without thought or judgement can have life changing results – I am the proof of that!
