prototyping

I developed a user scenario using trend reports and climate studies to understand how people could be living in 2050 and how they would interact with water on a daily basis.

how can we capture water?

Liquid Living asks you to explore the way of life and to respond through the design of new artefacts, services, interactions or experiences based around the relationship between people, the city of Glasgow and water in all its guises and manifestations. The task of the designer is to imagine the future requirements of individuals and groups, and to explore new behaviours and experiences.

Considering the Glasgow-centric aspect of the brief it was essential to understand the city’s relationship with water. Although this was an independent project we begun working as a class producing a massive mind map imaging all the ways that water affected life in Glasgow. We interviewed members of the public about perceptions of water as well as various key figures from famous life guards to architects working on the riverfront.

All developments were user-led either directly “I think this bit should be more curved” or indirectly through observation of behavior and looking at the bigger picture in a way that the user may not do.

Considering the imminent scarcity of potable water on a global scale explore how the Glaswegians of 2050 will be able to integrate rainwater harvesting into their daily movements through the urban environment.

Each time a new prototype was made it was tested and judged enabling conclusions to be drawn as to how the next iteration could be more successful.

what is glaswegian water?

cultural probe 24 hours how a glaswegian interacts with water

LIQUID LIVING was a project undertaken over 3 months of the final year of my undergraduate degree in Product Design at Glasgow School of Art. It began as a class wide research project and developed into an individual project. A consistent set of five glasgow-based users were used throughout the project from the initial cultural probe through to the final testing.

using the body to capture water

The imminent scarcity of potable water causes urbanites to seek innovative ways to incorporate rainwater harvesting into their urban lifestyles. Rain Coat allows an individual to collect a day’s drinking water during their daily commute and to filter the water dependent on their locations and water preferences.
