Look out for... MYSTERY JETS This band consists of Blaine on lead vocals and keyboard, William on guitar, Kai on bass and Kapil on drums. In late 2006, they put on a tribute show to Syd Barrett, one of their biggest influences, and among the performers were Kate Nash and Drew from Babyshambles. In December that year, the band released their album, ‘Twenty One’. Their new single ‘Young Love’, which features singer-songwriter a couple of singles through MySpace and Laura Marling is released on 10th March. throughout 2007, they wrote new songs for

Alex Turner, frontman of Arctic Monkeys, met Miles Kane when his band, The Little Flames were supporting the Arctics on their tour back in 2005. Turner and Kane started writing songs in April 2007 and their initial recording of their debut single, ‘The Age of the Understatement’ took place in France in late August. This epic tune sounds like it belongs in a cowboy movie with a 22-piece orchestra, and is released on 14th April.
The R&B soul diva is back with an amazing collaboration to start off the success of her new album, ‘Shine,’ released at the end of March. Amongst the producers of the album was Will.I.Am and John Legend, who requested ‘a hit’. The result was her catchy latest single, ‘American Boy’ featuring Kanye West and as she said herself, “I have given the ladies an anthem!”

Look out for... vampireweekend New York indie rockers This band is certainly different to any other, as they are influenced by both African popular music and Western classical music, with such songs as ‘Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa’, referring to Congolese soukous music. The band met while at Columbia University, and self-produced their first album. Last November they toured the UK with The Shins, and their incredibly catchy new single ‘A-Punk’ is released this week.
MGMT Formerly known as The Management, this American duo have been pegged as a top 10 ‘Artist to Watch’ in 2008 by Rolling Stone. They formed the band while at university in 2001 and are doing well with their psychedelic pop sound. Their debut single is called ‘Time to Pretend’.
Sam Sparro Australian born singer Sam Falson was first discovered when he and his family moved to Los Angeles, aged just 10, where Chaka Khan became one of his early admirers after hearing his voice. Sam’s first job as a child actor was in a McDonald’s commercial. His stage name was originally a family nickname which came from the Australian radio mascot Sammy Sparrow.

He briefly returned to Sydney before travelling to the UK to live with his cousins and become immersed in the British music scene in London. However, he had to leave for L.A. again in 2002, and got a job in a coffee shop. At this point, he wrote his single ‘Black and Gold’. Its catchy, hypnotic, electropop sound mixed with his soulful voice creates a perfect dancefloor tune.

NumberOne The Sussex five-piece are back with their second album, ‘Join With Us’, after releasing the single ‘I Thought It Was Over’ earlier this month. From romantic ballads like ‘Without You’, to upbeat brassy ‘Join With Us’ and ‘Spare Me’ to gentle pop-rock with ‘Turn It Up’, this is most definitely a mixed bag, but who could turn down these chirpy lads and stop them showing us what they’re capable of ?!

DIY real pop Jules De Martino, better known as half of new indie duo The Ting Tings, tells us of the journey from the unknown to the chaotic life of a popstar.
F
rom playing small gigs in their Salford flat to playing at Glastonbury, Katie and Jules have had the year of their lives. We were intrigued and managed to ask a few questions between their NME Awards tour gigs. How did you first meet? We actually met briefly in London both playing in different non-happening bands. What was it like playing Glastonbury? We’d never been before so we were glasto virgins. Playing there and seeing ourselves on the BBC2 coverage the following night...blew our minds for weeks. How did you come up with the name ‘The Ting Tings’? After jamming and playing some house parties struggling through 3 songs we had written, Katie told us that her new workmate was called ‘ting ting’ which meant band stand in Chinese mandarin. I googled it and found ‘sound of innovation on an open mind’ and that sealed naming our 3 song band. Why did you decide to release ‘Great DJ’ on 7” vinyl? We love making our own records. Our idea for ‘Great DJ’ was to collect old 45’s from eBay
and car boot sales and turn them inside out, placing our etched vinyl inside the new hand-made artwork sleeve. We then got a huge response on our MySpace with people complaining they didn’t have record players, so we’re still in midst CD production flow between tour dates. How does it feel to be playing on the NME Awards Tour? For any band to be able to play each night is a dream come true. Playing in front of what are essentially Cribs fans is amazing as we’re winning over a crowd that probably wouldn’t normally chase down a band like us. NME has given us this chance and we’re buzzing before every show.
Is it surreal how quickly you’ve become famous? Everything has moved so fast for us since starting the band properly in February 2007. There’s so much we want to do creatively, time is an issue these days. Any advice to give to young bands hoping to make it into the music industry? There’s no advice in art. Only influence. The Ting Tings release ‘Great DJ’ on 3rd March and are touring with NME til the end of February.
You have been compared to the likes of CSS, Gossip, and even the Spice Girls. How would you describe your music? How we have managed to combine the above is testament to the way we work. If a new song we’re recording doesn’t give us the fix we desire within 2 hours, we erase it, period. With us it’s about feeling, rhythm and songs. It’s DIY real pop.

Teenage kicks Director Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody teamed up and the result was Juno, a hilarious teen comedy starring Ellen Page and Michael Cera f you’re planning a trip to the cinema, make sure you go along to see Juno. This quirky teen comedy hit the big screens earlier this month and with its heart-warming script written by Oscar-winner Diablo Cody, you will certainly leave with a smile on your face. Ellen Page stars as brainy 16-year-old Juno MacGuff, who finds herself pregnant after sleeping with classmate Paulie Bleeker, (Michael Cera). Unable to go through with an abortion, she decides to give the baby up for adoption. What follows is a very awkward scene as she tries to tell her parents, played by JK Simmons and Allison Janney, that she is pregnant. They are very understanding and supportive, even though they were hoping she had been

expelled or into hard drugs! Along with her best friend Leah (Olivia Thirlby), Juno plans to find her unborn baby the perfect parents, and sets her sights on a young couple, Vanessa and Mark, played by Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman. However, as Juno spends more time with them, she realises their marriage isn’t as picture-perfect as it first appeared. The film was written by stripper-turned-blogger Diablo Cody, and with her witty script, it’s hard not to love the characters she has created. Thank You For Smoking director Jason Reitman sets the tone with an upbeat animated opening sequence and uses colourful production design throughout. Many have compared Juno to its fellow indie comedy Little Miss Sunshine, as they are both feelgood movies. On a serious note,
Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman play the adoptive parents in the film
the film addresses the abortion vs adoption issue in a mature way and you can see Juno grow emotionally throughout the film, going from such lines as, ‘In thirty-odd weeks we can just pretend that this never happened’ to ‘I need to know that it’s possible that two people can stay happy together forever’. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll frantically search for the soundtrack afterwards! With music from The Moldy Peaches and Belle and Sebastian, it keeps in tone with Juno’s world and the final scenes are surprisingly moving. The genuine comedy, delightful characters and fabulous script make this film definitely worth seeing. Juno is still in cinemas nationwide and will be released on DVD on 9th June.

Walliams and Lucas: New Heroes of Comedy Friday, Channel 4 This week’s New Heroes of Comedy documentary follows Matt Lucas and David Walliams, who performed together on the stand-up scene after meeting at the National Youth Theatre in 1990. They struggled for years making spoof sketches, including the interview show Rock Profiles, aired on UK Play. Their big break finally came when the BBC thought their Little Britain sketch show on Radio 4 could work as a TV series, so in 2003 it was launched on BBC3. Their most famous characters from the show are Andy and Lou, a carer for Andy who is in a wheelchair, but isn’t disabled at all, Vicky Pollard, a teenage chav who constantly gossips, and Daffyd, the Welsh ‘only gay in the village’. With the success of the show, it came as no surprise when it won a BAFTA for best comedy series, as well as Matt and David winning the award for best comedy performance.
NEIGHBOURS Libby returns to Ramsay Street this week with her son Ben. After hearing about mum Susan’s test results regarding the risk of a serious stroke, she vows to stay with her as long as she is needed.
