Dear reader,

All the way Urban, from the top down. But what does it mean? In this magazine we investigate the Urban Culture. We process the five senses: hear, see, smell, feel and taste. These icons can be found in the magazine. The piece that is about how to style urban matches with one of the senses, do you know whitch one?

The Urban Culture is a culture which is well known by some people, but also not by the rest. Many people think of the city instead of the culture. In London we went to research. Where can you find the Urban Culture best and where the eating places are where you get the ultimate urban feeling. What the Urban fashion style is and some fun facts about the Urban Culture.

You can find six interviews in this magazine. Three with Urban people and three with non-Urban people. It was very interesting for us to find out how it is to be a part of the Urban Culture and how somebody looks at someone who is Urban.

It was amazing to make this magazine. We are proud of it and we are reading it with pleasure.

Urban food

Taste a delicious pizza at Pizza East, Shoreditch, or enjoy all the sweets that Camden Town Market has to offer. London got it all. But what is typical Urban food? Well, that one is easy: street food or ‘fast’ food. Urban people live in the big city and don’t got much time to cook extensively. They’re searching for something simple, like a pizza. Dinner is the moment of the day they can relax and meet with some friends. They go and get simple meal with a cosy ambiance. Takeaway or in a bar: it doesn’t matter, as long as they have fun and can relax.

Cocktailbars: that’s the thing at the moment. Luckily London is full of it! There is one on every corner of the street. Enjoy the sweet taste of a Cosmopolitain or the fresh touch in a Mojito. Most of the time, the bars are decorated with a lot of color and posters. So if you want to have an amusing night, go and find a cocktailbar and have the best time of your life!

Urban music

Urban people listen to all kinds of music. Festivals and live music are really their thing.

The perfect combination: food and some good live music. In London, you’ll find lots of music cafes. You can grab something to eat and enjoy a cover band of The Beatles or a small band with their own new music. This way, everyone enjoys the company of their friends, some good food and nice music. Next to this music bars, the Urban people also love to go to festivals. Lovebox Festival is organised in Victoria Park every year. It’s clear: in London you’ll always find some good music.

Urban living

Where do Urban people live? The only answer to that is: the city. Urban people love the metropolitain vibe. They feel at home in the city. London is a great city for Urban people.

It has got everything: multiple cultures, lots of cafes and bars and even more nice places to eat. The most famous Urban areas in London are Shoreditch, Camden and Brixton. If you’ll ever be there, you’ll notice a lot of different people, graffiti on the walls and amusing places to eat and drink. The Urban people made their own spot there and there’s a chill vibe around.

Urban travel

Travelers and explorers: that’s what Urban people are. They wanna know what the world has got to offer. They wanna see what’s outside their own city. They wanna meet new cultures and new people. Urban people usually do not live in one place for a very long time. They can live in every city, as long as they can be themselves. London is a very great city for them, as there are so many different cultures in this big city. However, many urban people still have the urge to go abroad and discover things: wanderlust.

I am Urban The Urban Culture. It is often compared to the city, but that is not according to the people belonging to the Urban Culture. Josh, John and Haley tell us what it’s like to belong to the Urban Culture.

How can you recognize them? And is it a subculture or more a way of life? Read on quickly and discover how it is to be Urban‌

This is Joss Murphy, born in Wales. He is 25 years old and studied Graphic Design. At the moment he lives in Amsterdam, where his girlfriend lives as well. He is now taking small steps to master the Dutch language. In between he travels all over the world for cool assignments.

Joss is a truly creative master brain.

Do you see yourself as someone with the Urban culture? ‘Yeah, I guess. I mean, I come from a tiny tiny village with like 200 people in it. And I moved to the city because of my dreams as a designer and for that you have to come to a city. I’m young and creative and the city is the best place for me to be myself. And everything in the city, the people, the places, the feeling, is just who I am.’

So the way you can dress or act or the people you are within the city is who you are, right? ‘I do think that the city makes you who you are as a person. It’s not that I’m wearing what I’m wearing because I live in a city. I think it is just the opportunity that living in the city gives me to be who I am. And make sure I will always fit in with anyone.’

How do you recognize an Urban person? ‘Hm, it depends. Like I said, there are different types of Urban styles. But I think you got the Urban style that looks a bit like the Hipster style, second you’ve got the style with the vintage or second hand clothing which I got most of my clothes from. My denim jacket for example, everyone loves it and I got it from a second hand store for only fifteen dollars in Brooklyn! A couple of months ago, someone even saw that it is a limited edition from Pepsi.’

It’s so nice to see you can get the most beautiful items in second hand stores. But Brooklyn you said, what do you do in your everyday life? ‘Traveling around. Actually that is what I do, a lot!

Besides that, I love to read, write and create things. I make short movies, I work on a few small projects and as long as I’m being creative and as long as I can do my own thing and do a lot of it, I’m a happy person.

And I’m lucky I’m living in the ages of laptops and internet everywhere so I can work from where ever I want to. And I love to travel, I sure do, but for my work I have to stay around in the city some times.’

‘And even if someone doesn’t like something that the rest of us do like, it should not be a problem. The thing about Urban I like so much is that everyone can be who the hell they want to be and that is what the city and the Urban culture makes possible.’

Are that also the most important values of the Urban culture?

‘Yeah, everything we want is to be just who we are. That we can dress and act how we want. And as long as I can be myself I think we’re doing a good job keeping up those values.’

You sure do! I think this is also the best quality about the Urban culture, right? ‘It sure is.’

Is London a good place for the Urban culture? ‘Yes, it sure is!

London is so big and there are so many districts and every single district got his own beauty and his own part that makes it a good place for the Urban culture. Brixton for example, it’s famous for its music, also the music most of the people from the Urban culture like.’

Where do we have to go to see the urban culture? ‘You have to go to Nothing Hill for sure! On Saturdays there is a big market with the best kinds of food, it’s delicious! You’ve got fresh fruit from all over the world. Different cultures and different people are there to sell their stuff. It’s amazing.’

‘Besides food there are people selling second hand clothes, they’ve got most beautiful items. And everything is Shoreditch is amazing, especially the small side streets. In Shoreditch are creative people everywhere. Big chance you see a huge exhibition or party or something. And not only in Shoreditch, the beauty of London is that there are so many hidden things you can discover.’

And where do have to go for the best food? ‘Food trucks! Camden town has one hidden spot as well. Underneath the bridge, there are loads of food trucks. They’ve got the best food in London if you ask me.’

And do you think that Urban is just a style, or is it a real subculture? ‘No, I definitely think it’s a culture. A culture is not just formed by language, traditions or religions. A culture can form in many ways and I think that we should not only look to the aspects as religion or traditions. Nowadays there is technology coming in and there are things like clothing and that are becoming one of the main parts of creating a culture if you ask me.’ okay, so music is important to you? What is your favourite kind of music? ‘Actually I listen to a lot, but I think jazz is my favourite kind of style.’

And do you think jazz is a music style that is important for the Urban culture? ‘No, I think everyone got a different taste in music. It’s not that no one in a culture likes a special kind of music, but also that not everyone loves it. Most of the people in the same culture do like the same style, but I think you can never say everyone likes it.’

This is John. John is 24 years old and is currently staying in Londen for his job as an assistant manager in the film business. Originally, he is from New York but once a year he spends three months in this beautiful city.

Do you think you are urban yourself? Or an urban person?

‘Yeah, in what sense of the word?’

Well what do you think what makes urban and do you fit in that perspective? ‘I would say that being Urban is more about being metropolitan, living in the city, doing things in the city.’

How do you think you can recognize an urban person? What makes a person urban? You said being metropolitan, living in the city, is there anything else how you can recognize them?

‘Well I think you can be able to spot somebody who looks like living in the city. Eventually it is mostly in fashion based. You can spot people who you think they would probably live in London or they won’t live in London.’

Why do you think it’s not really a subculture but a way of life?

‘I think is a part of life. Its undeniable. Especially living in London or New York the way of life is kind of mandatory, there is not much of a choice. Well there actually is, you can say ‘I’m not going to use my phone’ or ‘I’m not going to use what’s around me, Wi-Fi and all these things.’ ‘But in this ‘world’ you have to.

Social media and fashion, I think that’s not much of a choice but like I said something undeniable.’

Do you think that’s urban? Having Wi-Fi and use it with different kinds of mobile devices? ‘I think so. You are bound by it more. It’s like more a way of life. Because if you live on the small countryside somewhere you don’t necessary need the things you have here in London. You’re much more happy to like, not be so attached to everything. I think if you live by a beach, you are happy being in the nature, in the sun being by the beach.

But when you’re in the city, you need all of these mobile devices more to ‘survive’. I think its culture not really a subculture.’

Do you think you’ll always live in the city? ‘Probably, I get bored easily and I need to have everything close to me. I recognize it when I come back from New York to London. Everything is so far away and everything is hard to get to. And actually, it’s like so easy but comparably to New York it’s a lot more difficult. We’re just spoiled.

I agree with you but how did you come to the idea of us being spoiled? ‘I spend six months in Cambodia last year and it was like fascinating to see people and children so happy with nothing. Like literally absolutely nothing. They have never seen an IPhone. They could play with a stick and dirt for hours and hours. Their imagination where like fully active.’

‘And a lot of the people there were just sitting around and they wouldn’t do anything so I asked what they were doing and they said they were working so I said: ‘How?’ ‘Their response was well we are waiting for the rice to grow. We harvest the rice and when its growing for four months we just wait.’ ‘It is pretty interesting. They don’t have television, so it’s a way of life to find something else to do, just like we do with the things we have.

So, when you come from an urban place to Cambodia it’s really difficult to switch off.’

Meet Haley: a lovely 21-year-old Urvan chick. She grew up in Ireland, but decided to move to the bustling city that is called London a few years ago. She feels at home here and is well-establshed. What her opinion about Urban is? You can read it below.

What makes you Urban? ‘I think it’s the way we look at what society expects, I guess. I don’t dress like a lot of girls back home.

Especially in Dublin, where I’m from, people dress very mainstream: jeans, cute top, a lot of pink.’

How do you recognize this so called Urban person? ‘I think that with girls, it definitely has a lot to do with non-conforming to their gender roles. You see a lot of girls that wear jean jackets or loose trousers. Or Harringtons, those are really cool. They were originally for men. But I guess you can just ‘smell’ when someone’s Urban.’

You mean that when you see someone or when you talk to them, you immediately know, or think, ‘okay, that person is Urban, or he/she isn’t’? ‘Yes, definitely. Even here, when someone walks in the door, I can see if they are dressed because they think ‘Urban is cool’, or if they actually dress like that.’

What do you do in your everyday life? ‘I’m a drama student.’

Nice! And in which year are you now? ‘I’m in my final year. I’m graduating in may.’

Do you have any idea of what you would like to do after that?

‘Hopefully act, maybe direct. Maybe write some things. I’m not sure yet, there are a lot of things I enjoy doing.’

And as a drama student, do you learn how to play in theatre or do you also learn how to play in a movie? ‘More theatre, but we do a lot of film stuff as well.’

Do you see Urban as a subculture? ‘A little bit, yes. I do think there are a lot of people who can get wrapped up in it as well.

People who think they can just stick up their nose to other people.’

Do you like the fact that it is called a subculture? ‘I don’t really care. Some people do, but this is just the way I dress and if people want to put me in that corner, I’m totally fine with it.’

Is there also certain music you listen to? ‘It’s more retro I guess.

You listen to more old school things that your parents might listen to. For example, I have a few friends that I hang out with who would probably fit into the Urban culture. They wouldn’t know the newest songs.’

And when you go to the pub, is it mostly pop music they play, or also more ‘Urban’ music? ‘I went to a bar yesterday and they were playing very pop culture music. But it’s great to listen to cheesy music as well.’

Questions and answers

Q: What did you surprise the most about the Urban culture? A: The fact that there are almost no rules in the culture. And there is only a little regularity in clothing or something. You won’t even recognize all the Urban people. Everyone is doing their own thing and that’s the nice thing about the culture. The Urban culture is not a culture where everyone thinks and does the same, they are all themselves.

Q: Is everyone of the urban culture as broad-minded as people say they are? A: We haven’t had a moment we thought someone would not accept us in the whole week. We spoke with a lot of people and they where all just as nice as the others. There sure will be people that aren’t nice to everyone or not just as accepting as the others, but we do think most of them are really as nice as people say.

Q: Is there a lot of urban in other city’s or is it something you only see in London? A: There surely is. The big city’s in particular have a lot of Urban people. Also a lot of other styles and cultures but you can see a lot of the Urban style too.

Q: Was there something that you thought what you we’re going to see, what exactly was as you expected?

A: The hotspots. We all expected it as atmospheric, creative, cosy and innovative. And they were, but still every place was different from the other.

Q: To which place in London do have to go if I want to see typical Urban?

A: Camden, for sure! The ambiance is amazing. Try to go to the smaller places and café’s there, especially those places are the best!

Q: I totally love the Urban style, but I have no idea what to buy or at which shop…Do you have some clothing tips for me? A: Take a look at our YouTube Channel, AllOverUrban! There’s a video online about clothing. In the video, we all go to Urban Outfitters to buy an outfit for ourselves. You can see what we bought in de video.

Q: I really like the Urban style of clothing and I would love to wear it.

But I’m afraid people might think it’s weird to wear a different style than others. Do you’ve got some tips for me to have more courage to wear want I like? A: Wear what you like and what you’re are confident about. When you are confident with yourself, others will see that and will accept and respect you as the way you are.

In the Boxpark you can combine shopping with dinner. Down you have the shops and upstairs you have the restaurants. The restaurants are small boxes. You can eat your food in the middle. There is a big table. A nice concept! Everyone eats something else, but you are still together.

LES DEUX AMIES — UNIT 27 Les Deux Amies is a lovely crepes bar! From savory and sweet, you will find it here. You can eat it all day, but I prefer to have it as a dessert!

The Old Shoreditch Station has two rooms. It makes sure that you can look for rest whenever you want, but you can also talk cozy. It’s a nice bar with nice staff. Well worth a visit!

They serves fresh antipasti, daily-changing specials and of course, severs wood oven pizzas! You can have an breakfast, lunch or dinner, but you can also drop in for coffee. It is cheap, but definitely delicious!

THE BURGER LAB For the best burgers you should go to The Burger Lab. The burger is homeground beef cooked over a grill. Thick and juicy. In one word: wow!

Senses. Everyone has them. Sight, hearing, taste, smell & touch. These 5 things allow you to observe everything that happens around you. Everyone observes things in a different way. How do Urban people observe things? What do they see around them in London? What kind of music do they hear?

What do they eat? What do they smell? And what do they touch or touches them?

Urban is very wide. Everyone has a different opinion on Urban Culture. For this magazine we investigated the Urban Culture on the basis of the five senses. By means of the icons you can find out what senses are used.

Each person lives differently, but in every culture there are standards and values. The Urban culture comes to me as open, friendly and lively. They respect everyone and they live their own lives.

Each page of this magazine has to do with the Urban Culture, even the ads! Perhaps after reading this magazine, you become Urban.

It was a great experience to discover the Urban Culture in London. In the Netherlands I don’t see Urban where I go to. There is definitely a place where Urban can be found in the Netherlands, but not as striking as in London, I think. In London you have places where it radiates,, like Shoreditch. It was therefore super fun to discover this in London.

The Urban Culture is a very beautiful culture. I hope you will learn more about this culture and that you will love it as much as we do! Look for all the senses in this magazine and look from the eyes of an Urban person. See, feel, taste, smell and hear as a Urban person.

To go deeper into the senses, we go in to the head of an urban person. How does a Urban feel when listening to music and planning to put something down with graffiti? Read with me and found out what happened with this person on the basis of the five senses‌‌

Music & Graffiti My hand grabs my phone. My thumb touches the home button slowly and unlocks my phone. My fingers flow across the screen, searching for my music list. Once found, my fingers flow further and eyes are looking for a nice song. My eyes falls on one of my favorite hip hop songs.

My feelings get crazy inside my body. I have warm feelings for the memories of this song. Full enthusiasm clicks my thumb on the song and I put my other fingers on the sound.

My ears take up the music. The words go too fast which I would not understand if I did not know the song, but I saved it in my head. The music goes from my ears to my mouth. My tongue makes my lips wet and my vocal cords warm up. Then my vocal cords will come to power and I open my mouth. The words flow out while the music flows through my ears. It sounds fantastic!

I take the aerosol and let the music come in again. Then my index finger raises the top and my other fingers squeezes around the bus. To the extent of the music I spray the wall full of colorful graffiti. The first thing that comes up in my mind with every words comes on the wall.

The colors come together and it looks amazing. My eyes are staring at the artwork that I just put on the walls. The smell of graffiti comes in through my nose. It smells good. It smells like art, emotions and hard work. The feeling inside of me feels warm, a bit proud.

I feel a spatter of graffiti on my lips. I take him away with my finger, but get graffiti in my mouth. The taste I get in is strange.

I look at my phone to look at my lip. Then I see the time. It’s time to go to my friends to eat ...

‘SHOREDITCH IT IS’ My first time in London. Of course, I saw all the famous sights: The Big Ben, The London Eye, Piccadilly Circus and many more. But I also was interested in all the unfamiliar places London had to offer. One of my favorite areas in London became Shoreditch. I had never heard of that area before I visited London, but my cousin lives there.

We would meet each other at his house. He lives in small apartment at the edge of Shoreditch, with a beautiful view over the city. From there, you also saw all the nice places in Shoreditch. After a while, my cousin wanted to show me how cool Shoreditch is. Well, that worked. I saw so many cool things. If you walk through those streets, you’ll see murals, industrial buildings and interactive art galleries. Boxpark is a really cool place to visit too. Its motto is: eat, drink, shop, play. If you’ll see it from the outside, it won’t be anything special. Just a few refitted black shipping containers.

But when you’ll enter it, you’ll find yourself in an atmospheric place. Food, music and a good vibe: Boxpark got everything. It’s a typical Urban hotspot. Next to Boxpark, Shoreditch got a lot more to offer. The incredible street art is phenomenal.

Bright colors, beautiful shapes and creative creatures. Immersed in the street art, you’ll find food.

Food everywhere. In the center of the area, there’s a food market with streetfood. You can find food from all kind of cultures right here. There are also plenty of restaurants to be found. If you are a fan of cocktails, you’re also in the right place. Shoreditch has a lot of cocktail bars with a chill vibe and some good music. If you had enough of all the food and drinks, you just cross the street to one of the many shops. Trendy, Urban and vintage. Of course, they also have the big shops like Urban Outfitters. If you’re looking for something different than normal, you must come to Shoreditch! Beside all the cool shops, cafes and bars, Shoreditch’ inhabitants are really various. You’ll find a businessman, a street artist, a writer, a vintage-wearing girl and many more on the streets of Shoreditch. If you’ve heard all of this, you’re wanting to visit Shoreditch, right?

‘THE URBAN BOX’ Even though there are quite some definitions out there about ‘the Urban subculture’, it still is very difficult to recognize who is part of this culture and who is not. Even when we asked people on the street, they often weren’t quite sure if they would fit in that box. Which is not too hard to understand, because what makes people Urban is described vaguely and there is not one music genre or one fashion style that determines if someone’s Urban or not. But still: when I walked through the streets of London, some people felt a lot more Urban to me than others did. I would scan a person for just a second and immediately had a thought about whether he or she would fit in. Of course I would never dare saying I am always right about this, but I do think there is one thing that a lot of Urban people have in common. What that is? Originality.

The people we spoke who would call themselves Urban, had a very own style. They did not seem to care a lot about the opinions of others –in a good way-. They dress how they want to dress themselves, even when it maybe is a bit deviant from what most people like to wear. Combinations that may seem weird to some are worn by Urban people. Also, the clothing girls wear are often not that girly, as in: cute skirts, dresses, high heels, pearls. But it definitely looks very cool.

I also discovered that a lot of Urban people do not really like the ‘top 40’ music they play these days. The girl I spoke for my interview, for example, preferred older music. But there are also Urban people who would rather listen to rap or R&B. Even popular top 40 songs are favored by some, so there really is not one genre that you have to like to be Urban.

As for hobbies: they also differed a lot. Some liked painting, others enjoyed dancing or acting and there were also a few people who did all different kinds of sports. I do have to say a lot of hobbies were quite artsy, but other than that; they really weren’t much alike.

My conclusion: you can put Urban people in a box, but at the same time you can’t. You can often recognize who is Urban and who isn’t really, but I think it is important to notice that in this subculture, there are a lot of differences. One Urban person does not necessarily have to have the same style or the same hobbies. And that is totally okay of course. Just as people in one culture are never the same, it is wrong to say otherwise about Urban people.

How do you look at someone who is Urban? Is it something totally different, something strange to you or normal? Michael, Lauren and Jan tell us how they look at the Urban Culture. Do they think, like many, about the city or really to the culture? How is living in an environment where this culture is found? We are going to find out now‌

Michael Sinclair is a 21 years old boy who lives in London for 1,5 years. Originally, he comes from Warwick, near Birmingham. He has moved for his study and is currently studying Economic in London. He doesn’t know yet what his plan is going to be after his study, but he wants to live in a city anyway.

Do you see yourself as an urban person? ‘No, because I don’t really like labels. I would say that I am who I am and I don’t really know a culture that I would put myself into. Perhaps I do have some features of urban, but I wouldn’t place myself in the culture.’

What is your definition of urban? ‘People with a little alternative clothing style. I think you can find these people a lot on the streets. In addition, I think they feel free and creative.’

How do you look at urban people? ‘I respect the fact that they’re themselves. It wouldn’t certainly be my style, but I think it’s cool that those people wear what they want and do whatever they want. Even if they are placed in a box, they’re proud of who they are.’

Do you understand urban people? ‘They belong to a group and I understand that must be nice for them. Their clothing style isn’t my thing at all, but flavors are different of course.’

Do you see a lot of urban in London? ‘Yes, everywhere. Certainly, in the neighborhoods like Camden and Soho, but you actually encounter them across London. It’s not that I pay a lot of attention to them, but if I think about it, they’re everywhere.’

Do you recognize yourself in urban aspects? ‘I recognize the free feeling they have about who they are, because I try to be myself as much as possible. As I said, I can’t find myself in the clothing style, but I think the interior style is very cool.’

Do you know the urban areas in London? ‘Yes, I know that!’

Have you ever been there? ‘Yes, as I said, in my opinion Soho and Camden are the most urban areas of London. Sometimes I visit cafes or coffee tents and you can notice that there’s a nice ambiance. It’s cozy and you can notice that people are open minded.’

Do you have a favorite place that’s urban? ‘The Camden market on Saturday. They have delicious food and a nice place to spend time with your friends. I definitely recommend this to you if you are looking for urban.’

What kind of food can you find there? ‘There are many stalls and food trucks with different types of dishes. This food isn’t always very urban, but the food trucks provide an urban ambiance.’

Are you going for that urban feeling? ‘No, not that. I just think it’s cozy and it’s actually just coincidence that the place is urban.’

Are your friends urban? ‘Ehm, one of my friends is quite urban, but I don’t know if he agrees with that. I any of my friends should be it he is. Furthermore, I don’t think my friends belong to urban.’

This is Lauren, a 27 year old Australian girl who currently lives in London with the love of her life. Because of her work as a lawyer she will return to her hometown in Australia this September. We asked Lauren a few questions about the ‘Urban’ subculture in London. Want to know what her thoughts are? Read the story below..

Do you have any idea what people mean when they use the word ‘Urban’? ‘I think when the people use the word Urban they are faring to a certain use culture which is based on the city. Obviously, because it is in the Urban area. I think it has something to do with race like, people are considering ‘Oh that is a very Urban population or a very Urban style’. What brings to mine is hip-hop dancing which is associated with the black population in London certainly in some of the Brixtons south area of London. I think there is definitely a race element to it.’

What do you think when you hear the word Urban? What is the first word that pop into your mind? ‘The first word I think of is the city because when you hear the word Urban you think sub-Urban and it always make me think of like being in the city.

It is definitely a signs of being in the middle of everything. I think of use as supposed of older generations which are I would like to say the country guys.’

Do you know people yourself who you’d describe as Urban?

‘I would say that most of my friends are Urban.’

Why would you call him of her Urban? ‘When I see my friends in London you can see that a few of them are born and raised in London. I could say that they are like a real ‘Londoner’. When I would describe a person in my head from the Urban culture it is a real ‘Londoner’, she is a real city girl, a real Urban person.’

Do you know people who are actually part of the Urban community / subculture?

‘I have friends who are city persons but I don’t have any friends who are in to hip hop and gangster music which I would associated with Urban. So I don’t have specifically Urban friends but I have friends who are a real ‘Londoner’.’

Would you recognize an Urban person? ‘Well, I am from Sydney which is a city. Australia is associated with outback and crazy animals and stuff but I am afraid of snakes and spiders just like anyone else. I am such a city girl so I would say I am an Urban person but I think that you have to talk to someone before you realize that because I could talk to you and I don’t know where you are coming from. You can tell me you are from a small village or a big city. I think that you should ask more questions before you can recognize an Urban person.’

‘At the same time you know in the way someone walks how whether they are a city person or an Urban person or a country person. I walk really quickly and I know that city people from Paris and London walk really quickly. For example I have two friends from Haarlem. I met them when I was studying in Paris and they are like very city girls as well. So I think it depends on where you come from and if you are a city girl of a country girl.‘ Do you think positively or negatively about the Urban culture?

Why is that? ‘I think positively about the Urban culture! I think that a lot of music comes from the culture. There is this style of music, I don’t know if you know it but it called grime. I didn’t realize it was such a big thing and then the other day someone said to me ‘He is a grime artist’ and I was like ‘What?’.I didn’t know that they were called grime musicians. You can compare grime with heavy rap. So I would say this is Urban culture. I wouldn’t say ‘Ewh, Urban culture’ but more like ‘Cool’. I feel like it is more cool then scary or intimidating. Sometimes when I am in Paris or London I feel like ‘Oh, I am not cool enough’ but yeah, it is Urban.’

Do you have the feeling that the Urban culture is alive in London? ‘Oh yes, definitely. I think you really feel it in London. If you compare to Sydney for example. It is a city and big businesses are based there but London has a life. You see at the moment that it is coming to life. You can see people out more and people are getting in to street life, clubs and pubs. You can feel

Jan Verhagen (27) is a young architect who lives in London. He was born in The Netherlands in a small town called Den Dungen. Right now, he lives in a small apartment in Shoreditch for 3 years. He’s not planning to come back to The Netherlands anytime soon.

Do you know people who you’d describe as Urban? ‘When I was a student I had a roommate I’d describe as Urban. He had a graffiti wall and an alternative appearance. This doesn’t match with the features I said before. But at this moment, right here in London, I don’t know that much Urban persons.

Do you have any idea what people mean when they use the word urban? ’Well, I’m actually not sure what urban would mean. The first thing that comes into my mind is HipHop, kind off slightly gangster culture. You know I also know that a lot of the things that are in the streetscape are regarded as urban. I actually not like that. I think about a man with a beard and stuff when I think about an urban person. Even though he’s actually not as the new kinda urban. There’s not a strict rule for being urban. Some people are going back to farming and get that back into the city. That seems to be the thing at the moment. Maybe urban is not that urban anymore. Urban is actually country sizing the city.’

Maybe I have one friend who’s Urban. He is a banker and travels the whole world. He’s always searching for the best places to get the best food. He’s more of a ‘high-end Urban’. My ex-girlfriend is also pretty Urban. She always listened to new music. That’s a big part of the Urban culture: music. I think the Urban music started with the hip-hop scene and R&B music. Right now, it can be all kind of music. House, pop, rock, alternative and folk.’

Do you think more positively or negatively about the Urban culture? ‘I don’t think about Urban that much. It’s not something I think about every day. I do think that the Urban subculture keeps the city moving forward. That’s the power of the subculture. People who have the urban lifestyle think out of the box and see so many chances in the city. They go and search for the ‘non-standard places’. Places the average person wouldn’t find.

They search for possibilities to improve some old places and make them upcoming again. I think that’s very positive about the Urban culture.’

Do you have the feeling that the Urban culture is alive in London? ‘Yeah, I think so. London can’t be seen as one city. It’s actually built of several villages and cultures in one place. Brixton, Shoreditch and SoHo are very different places with different cultures and different people. You already notice it when you drive by bus through London. Every place has its own street style. It’s pretty awesome to see. But to understand the Urban life in London you have to understand that the city is divided with different styles, cultures and people. For example, the Urban lifestyle is pretty visible in Shoreditch but not that much in The City, which is a district in London.’

How would you describe an Urban person? ‘He is young. He is not settled. He hasn’t got one permanent place to live. He spends most of his time outside of his house. He attaches more value to things that makes him happy right now. He

loves food and drinks. He thinks he got nothing to

lose. I don’t think there is a certain appearance of

an Urban person. Of course, I think slightly more

about a man with a beard and round glasses,

more of a hipster kind of guy. But a business

man can also be Urban if you handle the

features I said before.’

Would most Urban people from London stay in London for the rest of their lives?

‘No, I certainly don’t think so. Urban people want to travel the world and see something of our big planet. I think they can live any where around the world. In every city they’d find some nice spots and make themselves a ‘home’.’

..definitely when ‘home’ is a special place. ‘Home’ must be a place that’s decorated as you like it. ‘Home’ can be a place where you read a book in the evening. ‘Home’ is a place where you have to feel safe and comfortable. ‘Home’ is a place where you can always be yourself. ‘Home’ is a place where emotions don’t need to be retained.

‘Home’ doesn’t always have to be your house. Your ‘home’ can also be a person. Or more persons. You can have a sense of security when you’re with that person. Some people don’t need a materialistic ‘home’. ‘Home’ is where their favorite person is.

‘Home’ can be the place where you listen to music. It can be the place where you dance of happiness. Maybe you’ll see ‘home’ as a place for cosiness. Your ‘home’ can be filled with friends, but also with rest and emptiness. Being at ‘home’ can be a sense of freedom.
