The enigmatic temptress On 6 December 1912, archaeologists found a sculpture depicting a woman of surpassing beauty in the studio of the court sculptor to Pharaoh Akhenaton. As she was wearing royal headwear and had the facial features of a pharaoh’s wife, they concluded that the effigy was of Nefertiti (14th century BC). The image quickly came to epitomise timeless beauty in the same way the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo had previously and to symbolise ancient Egypt. But while we all know the face, we know very little about the woman behind it. We do not know where Nefertiti came from, what her status was, how her name was pronounced, or even whether one of the extant royal mummies contains her body. A CT scan of the famous bust revealed a less than perfect limestone centre – perfect features were immaculately sculpted onto an outer layer of painted stucco. Some see this as confirmation that Nefertiti was no great beauty, while others dismiss the idea that the figure is a faithful representation of what she looked like. Pop culture and business brush these reservations aside. Countless cosmetic firms and beauty salons around the world are keen to capitalise on the name and the bust of the queen. Nefertiti has only been famous for a hundred years. Queen Cleopatra VII (69-30 BC), on the other hand, has been the archetypal femme fatale for more than two millenniums. Ensnaring both Julius Caesar and Mark Antony earned her the uncontested title of the most powerful and seductive woman of all time. It matters not that Caesar Augustus depicted her as a calculating and dissolute woman who used charms and spells to draw attention away from his power struggle with Mark Antony. The legend he created took on a life of its own – the last queen of Egypt was esteemed for her courage (she committed suicide to avoid being taken captive) and contemned for her decadence and eccentricity.
