Lost amsterdam issue #7 issuu

Rosa, 20, student I grew up in a village just outside Amsterdam and moved to Amsterdam for my studies. I really enjoy Amsterdam, especially in springtime. My perfect day starts with a good breakfast and a coffee at CT Coffee & Coconuts. Then, get on a boat with heaps of friends, enjoy the full afternoon boating on the canals, maybe even swim in the Amstel, and make our way back in to town by sundown. Finish the day with a barbecue on my roof terrace. What a beautiful day! Rosa’s favorites: Coffee – CT Coffee & Coconuts Special – Nine street district

CT coffee & coconuts

Located in a stunning and spacious former cinema,

Back to Black

‘Local’ and ‘sustainable’ are two of our favourite coffee words. Back to Black serves coffee from

which are roasted by a micro roaster located just

The Breakfast Club

addition of this spot is further testament to this.

4

Filter Amsterdam

Strangely enough, the area around Artis and the

Did you know that the Dutch have one of the most diverse cuisines in the world? Find out and try some amazing food influenced by Arabia at Nomads, or food from many different cultures at the Food Hallen.

Food

Top–5 Food Ron Gastrobar, Bar Spek, Van ‘t Spit, Nomads, Food Hallen

1

Ron Gastrobar

Ron Blaauw is one of the Netherland’s most famous chefs, having earned 2 Michelin stars. But tired of the

Sophialaan 55

restraints that these stars posed on him, he started

+31 (0)20 496 1943

over with Ron Gastrobar. The motto is unconstrained

rongastrobar.nl

enjoyment for every budget. Gastrobar is definitely

mon – sat 17.00 – 00.00

laidback, but the food is still on that same Michelin

sun 12.00 – 00.00 h.

level we’re used to from Blaauw.

Food

“Gastronomic”

2

Bar Spek

Bar Spek stands for uncomplicated, delicious food, with a hint of coolness. The interior is nice

Admiraal de Ruyterweg 1

and spacious, with a big couch to relax on and

+31 (0)20 618 8102

cosy tables scattered throughout. This laidback

barspek.nl

‘bar’ is open all day, but we like to come in for

open: daily

dinner to enjoy their speciality: pizzas! Our pick:

9.00 – 1.00 h.

the raw ham with truffle and grilled vegetables.

Food

“Deliciously cool”

3

Van ‘t Spit

Three words: Best. Chicken. Ever. This should be enough to warrant a visit to Van ’t Spit, but

De Clerqstraat 95

luckily it has more to offer. The interior is cosy

+31 (0)20 358 3878

and warm, with a big open kitchen and firewood

vantspit.nl

stacked on the wall. The chicken is free-range and

open: mon – sun

straight from the grill, and the sides they offer are

17.00 – 01.00 h.

delicious, especially the corn from the cob.

Food

“Chicken heaven”

4

Nomads

Amsterdam is a city made up of many cultures and the Arbian is one that is heavily present. For the best

Rozengracht 133-I

of the best of Arabia, look no further than Nomads

+31 (0)20 344 64 01

for a beautiful experience. Entering this gorgeous

nomads.nl

place, filled with handmade pieces from Morocco and

sun – thu 18.00 – 1.00

Egypt, is like entering a fairytale. Plus, the Arabian/

fri – sat 18.00 – 2.00 h.

Western fusion dishes are finger licking good!

Food

“An Arabic fairytale”

5

Food Hallen

Normally we suggest just one hotspot here, but the Food Hallen are actually many different hotspots,

Bellamyplein 51

located in one beautiful former tram depot. Compare

foodhallen.nl

it with the indoor food markets you find in Spain,

open: sun – wed

but with a modern twist. There are almost too many

11.00 – 20.00 h.

options to choose from for bits, bites and drinks. The

thu – sat 11.00 – 21.00 h.

locals love this place, so it’s always busy and bustling.

Food

“A must visit!”

Top–5 Drinks

Drinks

Tales & Spirits, Bar Oldenhof, Lion Noir, Café Finch, Vyne

‘Borrelen’, having drinks before or after dinner, either with or without snacks, is an essential part of Amsterdam culture. We’ve chosen our top favourites at the moment for a refreshing G&T, a fancy cocktail or a good old pint of beer.

1

Tales & Spirits

Hidden away in an alley you’ll find Tales & Spirits, a multi-level building featuring a

Lijnbaanssteeg 5

restaurant and, most importantly, an amazing

+31 (0)6 55 35 64 67

cocktail bar. The interior is cosy and warm, with

talesandspirits.com

a nice nostalgic edge, just like the drinks. While

open: tue – thu 17.30 – 1.00 h.

we are a sucker for their Old Fashioneds, we

fri & sat 17.30 – 3.00 h.

think the Quiz Fizz is also to die for!

Drinks

“Amazing cocktail bar”

2

Bar Oldenhof

If you’re in the mood for a unique experience, look no further than Bar Oldenhof. The whole staff is

Elandsgracht 84

dedicated to make you feel like royalty, with every

+31 (0)20 751 32 73

detail thought through to make sure you have a

bar-oldenhof.com

pleasant evening. The drinks are even better than

tue – thu 19.00 – 1.00 h.

the service though; we are still daydreaming about

fri & sat 19.00 – 3.00 h.

the Hemingway Daiquiri and the Old Rusty.

Drinks

“Great service, exquisite cocktails”

3

Lion Noir

Lion Noir is definitely one of the best looking bar/restaurants in town, but luckily it doesn’t

Reguliersdwarsstraat 28

only have its looks to go by on. While the

+31 (0)20 627 6603

restaurant is excellent, we love to stop by for

lionnoir.nl

the sinfully delicious cocktails and snacks. The

mon – thu & sun 18.00 – 1.00 Lionjito or Hendricks & Rose are scrumptious fri & sat 18.00 – 3.00 h.

choices, and the wine list is also very impressive.

Drinks

“Grrrrr!”

4

Café Finch

Finch is one of the most popular bars in the Jordaan. When the sun is out, you’ll be lucky to

Noordermarkt 5 H

find a seat on their terrace. You can take a seat

+31 (0)20 626 24 61

inside, but why not act like a local and stand in

open: sun – thur

front of the bar with a ‘vaasje’ beer with a group

9.00 – 1.00 h.

of friends. Make your evening complete with a

fri – sun 9.00 – 3.00 h.

big plate of ‘bitterballen’.

Drinks

“Act like a local”

5

Vyne

While Amsterdam is famous for the beer and

Prinsengracht 411

‘bitterballen’ combo, sometimes you crave a little more

+31 (0)20 344 64 08

sophistication. When that mood strikes, head over to

vyne.nl

Vyne. This wine bar offers more than 270 wines, with

mon – thu 18.00 – 0.00

a menu of dishes and delicacies to match with your

fri – sat 17.00 – 1.00 h.

drink. And if you simply can’t choose your wine, the

sun 16.00 – 22.00 h.

expert staff is more than happy to help you along.

Drinks

“Sophisticated wine bar”

“The human right to water and sanitation inspired us to develop MARIE-STELLA-MARIS.” MARIE-STELLA-MARIS is an Amsterdam based brand, offering natural mineral water and a broad range of care products. For each product you purchase, we donate a fixed amount towards clean drinking water projects.
