Football Staff Rob Goode

Running Back Coach Rob Goode is in his first season as the Duhawks’ running backs coach after joining the staff last winter. The 2012 season will be his first as a member of the Loras College coaching staff. Goode was most recently at the University of Montana Western where he served as wide receivers coach and assistant strength coach. From 2005-2007, he worked at his alma mater – Rockford College – while he pursued his master’s degree as a graduate assistant. With the Regents, Goode coached the linebackers and coordinated the team’s academic programming. Goode also spent time at the high school level in Durand, Ill. and Urbana, Ill. He earned both his bachelor’s (physical education, 2005) and master’s (secondary education/teaching, 2007) degrees from Rockford College. While an undergrad with the Regents, Goode was a co-captain of the football team, made the ESPN The Magazine All-District Academic Team, and was a two-time All-UMAC pick.

Brent O’Brien

Defensive Backs/Special Teams Coordinator Brent O’Brien is now in his second year on the coaching staff at Loras College. O’Brien joins the Duhawks as the secondary coach after coaching at Fort Hays State University where he also focused on the secondary and served as the strength and conditioning coordinator. He graduated from Hastings College in 2005 with degrees in sports management and business management following a four-year-career with the team. As a player, O’Brien earned AllGPAC honors at linebacker in 2004, the same year the team qualified for the NAIA Quarterfinals. Following his playing career, O’Brien joined the Hastings College staff as a linebackers coach. He then went on to coach at Fort Hays State University in 2007, then Earlham College in 2008, before returning to Fort Hays State in 2010. O’Brien also earned his master’s degree in sport administration from Fort Hays State University in 2008.

Michael DuFrane

Defensive Line Coach

Mike DuFrane joined the coaching staff at the start of the spring 2011 semester and assumes the role of defensive line coach beginning with the 2012 season. DuFrane comes to the Duhawks from Carthage College. In two seasons with the Red Men, DuFrane was the defensive line coach and worked with the inside linebackers. He has also served as the team’s strength and conditioning coordinator in 2011. As a player, DuFrane played at both Augustana College (South Dakota) and UW-Whitewater (Wis.) where he finished his career. In 2007, he started at nose tackle for the NCAA Division III national champion Warhawks. He earned his bachelor’s degree in communications at Whitewater and will complete his master’s in education/leadership in teaching through Carthage at the conclusion of the spring 2012 semester. .

Steve Helminiak

Offensive Line Coach Steve Helminiak joined the Duhawk staff in 2011 and returned to Loras where he was a former assistant coach and player from 1986 to 2000. Helminiak has nearly 20 years of coaching experience and serves as the offensive line coach for the Duhawks for the second straight season in 2012. He graduated from Loras in 1991 with a degree in business management. After a four-year playing career as a Duhawk, Helminiak then joined the Loras College staff as a student assistant and working his way up to the offensive coordinator position at the conclusion of his first go-around with the Duhawks in 2002. Helminiak also served as the offensive coordinator at Rockford College until 2006. Helminiak came back to his alumnus from Southern Oregon University, where he served as the head coach since 2006. During his time at Southern Oregon, Helminiak coached one AFCA and five VSN All-Americans. He also coached the 2009 NAIA Independent Offensive Player of the Year and the fourth best receiver in receptions and yards in SOU history. Helminiak compiled an 11-6 record versus NAIA opponents, including a 4-1 record against perennial NAIA power Azusa Pacific. .
