ADONNA KHARE Between the Lines October 22 – December 3, 2016 Lora Schlesinger is pleased to present Adonna Khare’s fifth solo-exhibition with the gallery. Between the Lines features new drawings by the artist. The exhibition opens with the artist’s reception on Saturday, October 22 from 5 to 7 pm and is on view through December 3, 2016. Adonna Khare’s new drawings are an ongoing exploration of life, and the joy and pain of living. Through the many fine strokes and delineating detail, Khare utilizes animals as vessels to illustrate stories about family, childbirth, relationships and the interconnectivity of all living things. The world she recreates on paper is inspired by personal experiences. Each drawing is developed spontaneously, allowing her to react and record the complexities of life. Her limitless imagination is captured in an astonishing and curious world of animals coexisting with hybrid creatures. Although the entangled kingdoms are rich with animalia; traces of our humanity and the effects we have on the environment can be found in the work. In Elephant Clothesline, elephants tether a clothesline with white garments against a stormy dark background. The storm an allusion to climate change, is a storm of change and uncertainty. It serves as a reminder that we have an influence over the environment and that our choices have an impact on the world. Adonna Khare received her MFA from California State University, Long Beach. In 2013 she was selected for the State of the Art exhibition at Crystal Bridges Museum, an exhibition that traveled to the Minneapolis Art Institute in 2016. In 2016 she had a solo exhibition at the Boise Art Museum in Idaho, and a solo exhibition at the Mesa Contemporary Art Museum in Arizona. She was the recipient of the Grand Prize Award at ArtPrize in 2012, the largest art competition in the world. Her drawings were selected for the Surrealism Today exhibition at the Nassau County Museum in Roslyn NY. She was included in the Long Beach Museum of Art’s “Sweet Subversives, Contemporary California Drawing 2009-2010” and was given a one-person show in 2010 titled “The World of Adonna Khare: Beasts, Backpacks and Curious Creatures”, at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery in Carslbad, California. EXHIBITION DATES: October 22 – December 3, 2016 OPENING RECEPTION: October 22, 5-7 pm CONTACT: Lora Schlesinger or Stephanie Mercado
