The inspiration for the clay ceramic plaque on the cover came from Avon Middle School students Paige Montague and Lauren Scully. Art teacher John Yagoda said, “I told them let’s think outside the box. They said could we use clay? Of course, I answered. The girls used the slab roller to roll the clay to create the background of the plaque. Then both Paige and Lauren began to roll coils, which they learned how to do in Art class. I demonstrated how they could make the letters with coils and they went from there. They made the letters, scratched and slipped them to the background and for the word “and” they used alphabet letter noodles pushed into the clay.

HONORABLE MENTION
The first firing goes to 2,200 degrees approximately, to bisque fire the clay (turn it white-to be able to apply the glaze.) They then chose the background color and then began to paint the letters to make them stand out from the background. The clay had to be fired a second time to change the painted glaze to a glass-like finish. The most fun part according to the girls was the making of the letters before they would crack and also the glazing of the plaque and to see the transformation from a lump of clay to the final result of the write and design plaque.

Paige and Lauren are in the process of making fused glass for a teacher as worry stones for her students and soon will be working on making some puzzle piece projects for Autism awareness for the month of April. The students are thrilled to come down and get creative with the supplies in my room.”
