Park Updates A MOVING TRANSFORMATION AT MILLER NATURE PRESERVE

In December 2023, the parks announced the closure of the Miller Nature Preserve Conservatory in January and February 2024. Due to required maintenance on the facility, which opened in May 2011, there was an opportunity to make improvements. During the closure, staff were busy with paint touchups, revitalizing the floors, replacing the shade cloth in the Conservatory, and other necessary repairs. More robust improvements included reimagined custom mobile-planting beds. These modular beds were designed to stand alone or with other beds. This flexible option allows numerous possibilities for configuration for display and programming needs. The beds can now be moved for ample open floor space for plant care demonstrations for adult gardening enthusiasts or hands-inthe-soil activities for young aspiring horticulturalists. These new beds were fabricated by staff to accommodate plants in a range of sizes, including large trees and understory herbs. Additional plants were brought in to reinvigorate existing beds and to fill the new ones. Funding for this project was made possible in part through generous donations. The facility will re-open to guests on Friday, March 1. To celebrate the re-opening, join us for a Bonsai Silhouette Show, offered in partnership with Cleveland Bonsai Club, on Saturday, March 2. This event will be held at the Miller Nature Preserve Orchid Room from 10 am-4 pm. Explore the intricate artistry of bonsai trees at this unique exhibition and witness the harmony between art and nature. This event is free, and registration is not required. Admission to the Conservatory is just $2 per person or FREE for Miller Members and children two years and under.

MOON SUN

EARTH SHADOW OF TOTALITY

What exactly is a total Solar Eclipse?

A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. People located in the center of the Moon’s shadow when it hits Earth will experience a total eclipse.

What can I expect?

The sky will darken, as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people in the path of a total solar eclipse can see the Sun’s corona, the outer atmosphere, which is usually obscured by the bright face of the Sun. You need clear skies to have the full eclipse experience, with a clear view of the Sun and Moon. However, the eerie daytime darkness associated with eclipses is still noticeable with cloud cover. You can also expect the temperature to drop about 10 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the humidity and cloud cover at your location. When a solar eclipse reaches totality, nocturnal wildlife sometimes wakes up, thinking that it’s nighttime, and nonnocturnal wildlife might think it’s time to head to sleep!

What causes an eclipse to occur?

Eclipses occur due to the special coincidence of the Moon and the Sun being the same angular size. The Sun is approximately 400 times wider than the Moon, but it is also approximately 400 times farther away, so they appear to be the same size in our sky. This is what allows the Moon to completely block the Sun during total solar eclipses. However, the Moon’s orbit around Earth is not a perfect circle, so when it is at its farthest point from the Earth, the Moon will appear slightly smaller than the Sun. Eclipses that happen during this phase of the Moon’s orbit are known as annular eclipses, and the Sun is still visible in a “ring of fire” encircling the Moon.

How rare are total solar eclipses?

Every 1,000 years there are 840 partial eclipses, 791 annular eclipses, 635 total eclipses, and 114 hybrid eclipses throughout the world. That works out to 2-3 solar eclipses of all kinds each year, and about 2 total solar eclipses every 3 years. This, however, will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044 and it is estimated that in any given location on Earth, a total eclipse happens only once every 360 years!
