Yasmine Bleeth is almost unrecognisable from her former Baywatch days.

MY HOW

YOU’VE CHANGED!

F

ormer Baywatch actress Yasmine Bleeth, 51, looked remarkably different as she made a rare public outing recently when she took her pet dog for a walk in Los Angeles. The star looked happy and relaxed as she took a stroll down the streets in a blue flowing dress. The one-time model, who played sexy lifeguard Caroline Holden in the hit TV show, now lives a low-key life, dividing her time between California and Arizona. For the past 17 years Yasmine has been married to strip club owner Paul Cerrito, who she reportedly met in a Malibu rehab centre after voluntarily checking

herself in for cocaine addiction. Yasmine, who hasn’t acted since 2003, has struggled with addiction over the years and relapsed after leaving the clinic. She was arrested in 2001 when police found cocaine in her car following a crash. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years probation and 100 hours of community service. Shortly afterwards, in an essay in Glamour magazine, she admitted: “I never expected to get into drugs. And if I was sniffling, my publicist would tell people I had sinus problems, which I do.” And although she had gained some weight, she said that “consciously trying to stay off drugs is now part of my life and always will be”.

LOVE STORY CROWN PRINCE

FREDERIK HOSPITALISED Crown Prince Frederik has been rushed to hospital after he sustained a shoulder injury while skiing last week. The 51-year-old was in Verbier with his family when the incident occurred. It’s understood medical treatment was successful and he will soon return to his royal engagements. A statement was released by the palace explaining the incident. “His Royal Highness The Crown Prince suffered a minor injury in [sic] the left shoulder last week in connection with skiing in Switzerland,” Danish Royal Communications Director Lene Balleby said. “The Crown Prince has therefore today been examined and treated at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen.”

RUSSELL IN HIDING?

livia Newton-John and Richard Wilkins’ unmistakable bond goes back many years. Richard recently posted a throwback on Instagram from when they were both in their 20s. “Who would have thought … that all these years later … our kids would be dancing together on the telly!!??” he wrote alongside the photo, referring to Richard’s son Christian and Olivia’s daughter Chloe currently performing on Dancing with the Stars. Olivia and Richard have been close for decades and their special friendship was particularly notable when it was first revealed that the singer’s cancer had returned. Richard choked up on live TV as he announced the news. “Sad news this morning and spare a thought for the gorgeous Olivia NewtonJohn, please. The back pain that has been causing her issues recently, we thought it was sciatica, has turned out to be breast cancer,” he started. “Which has spread to her lower back … Sorry …” he said, fighting back tears. “We send her all our love. She’s a wonderful person … It is so sad,” he said choking. “She is an incredibly close friend of yours,” his former Today co-host Lisa Wilkinson said, comforting him.

Once renowned for his ripped physique, in the past few years Aussie actor Russell Crowe has struggled to keep off the kilos. The 55-year-old has transformed his figure for various roles over the years. But while earlier films demanded chiselled washboard abs, his recent parts, in The Loudest Voice and Unhinged, required him to stack on the weight. When pics emerged last year of Russell sporting a large belly, it was clear the actor had continued to let his health slip. So in a bid to avoid any pics being taken before he’s ready to reveal his new bod to his close friend Terri Irwin and the world, Russ is keeping a low profile. “The reason no-one has seen Russell in a while is he’s dieting. He wants to emerge after his body looks better.”

It has been one year since Kerri-Anne lost the love of her life, John.

KAK: ONE YEAR WITHOUT JOHN

reakfast television veteran Kerri-Anne Kennerley has marked one year since the tragic passing of her husband, John Kennerley. John died on February 27, 2019 at the age of 78 – almost three years to the day after he fractured his C2 and C3 vertebrae and was left quadriplegic when he fell over a garden hedge at a golf resort near Coffs Harbour. Studio 10 host Kerri-Anne, 66, stood by her beloved husband’s side and gave him round-the-clock care in the years following his horror accident. The pair were married for more than three decades after tying the knot in 1984. Kerri-Anne spoke candidly about her grief on Studio 10 just a month after losing the love of her life last year. “It was a shock because I thought I would really have John for many, many, many years to come and a lot of things happened very quickly so it was a terrible shock,” she confessed. “You’re in this black hole, it’s so dense not even light can get out. But that said, John and I have been a team for too many years, so many years and we were always together, we thought as two and now there’s only one.” As Kerri-Anne remembers John on the one-year anniversary of his death, words her friend and industry colleague Angela Mollard wrote just after his passing still ring true today: “I’m sure Kerri-Anne’s ‘show must go on’ attitude and her tremendous wit and joy will carry her through.”

MAGGIE’S HEARTACHE The shocking death of Maggie Beer’s daughter has left the Australian food industry reeling. The much-loved cook’s eldest daughter, Saskia Beer, passed away suddenly on February 14. A devastated Maggie took to Instagram last Monday to share the tragic news, saying, “It is with broken hearts we need to let you know that our beautiful,

6

extraordinary daughter Saskia died unexpectedly yet peacefully in her sleep…” A fellow foodie, Saskia inherited her mother’s flair for cooking from an early age, going on to run her own successful produce business in the Barossa Valley. The 46-yearold mother of three had married her long-time love Petar Jercic in April of last year. Maggie has been inundated with messages of sympathy from fans, with the biggest names in Aussie cooking also adding their condolences. MasterChef’s Matt Preston sent his “love and thoughts”, and Kylie Kwong wrote, “I loved Sassy so much and hold you all very, very closely in my heart.”

An obsessed superfan who sent Delta Goodrem over 300 love poems has been ordered to stay away from the pop star. James Joseph Lafferty, an unemployed Grafton man, appeared at Sydney’s Downing Centre Court on February 18 to face charges of stalking and intimidation, tampering with evidence with intent to mislead, sending menacing messages, harassing or offending, and

refusing to comply with direction. According to police, Lafferty showed up at Delta’s apartment on Valentine’s Day and sent a flood of messages, such as “I honestly love you Delta, my soulmate forever.” The next day, Lafferty approached Delta when she entered the lobby to pick up a dress, shouting: “Delta! Delta!” Documents state The Voice judge was left “distressed and anxious” by the entire ordeal.

KATE SHAMES MEGHAN

OVER BIRTH PHOTO CALL

T

he moment a new baby is introduced to the world is one of the most significant events in the royal family’s calendar. So when Meghan Markle chose to break tradition and wait several days before a photocall, rather than appearing on the hospital steps mere hours after the birth (as most of the royals, including Princess Diana and Kate Middleton did), the international response was enormous. The royal family remained silent on the subject, until now. In a shocking interview, Kate has finally revealed her true feelings about Meghan’s decision. On the podcast Happy Mum, Happy Baby, Kate provided a rare glimpse into her private life, saying she found the post-birth public photo a “slightly terrifying” experience.

Kate’s comments have been regarded as a possible dig at Meghan.

However, she explained that in spite of her discomfort, she recognised how essential the display was, and would never consider forgoing the custom. “Both William and I were really conscious that this was something that everyone was excited about … for us to be able to share that joy and appreciation with the public,

I felt was really important.” Kate’s pointed comments make it impossible not to draw comparisons between the way she and Meghan behaved after the births of their children – suggesting that Meghan was disrespectful and ungrateful by breaking protocol. Kate wants to make it crystal clear which one of them is the more loyal royal!

HOME SWEET HOME

With renovations at Buckingham Palace now in full swing, there’s talk of updates to the royal living arrangements. The $715 million refurbishment is expected to take a decade to complete, and while Queen Elizabeth is the only member of the royal family residing there, with Prince Philip spending most of his time at Sandringham, it could soon be the time for some new tenants to move in. It is understood that with Harry now lost to Canada, the Queen is desperate to keep her other grandson and his family close by, and is rumoured to have invited Prince William, Kate and their children to relocate from Kensington Palace, where they have lived since 2011.

A

s the troubled Today show continues to battle falling ratings, New Idea can reveal the secret plan being hatched to reunite the original line-up. With Karl Stefanovic sliding back into his old seat as if nothing had happened, rumours are rife that paths are now being cleared to make way for the return of his former co-host Lisa Wilkinson, as well as entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins and news reader Sylvia Jeffreys. “All four want nothing more than to see the ‘Dream Team’ back on morning TV – and they’re stopping at nothing to get their way,” reveals our source. “Dickie in particular spent years alongside those people, and as the old saying goes, ‘If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it’.” It is understood negotiations are at an early stage but everyone is positive about the outcome. “Yes, there will be a few bridges to build with who was given the boot and why,

But as happy as the team are at the prospect of reuniting on air, the pressure is also on for them to help win the ratings war. Last week the show’s ratings were 173,000, the lowest ratings it’s had since Karl returned to Today earlier this year with new co-host Allison Langdon. Their rivals over at Sunrise were almost 100,000 viewers ahead at 272,000. Still desperate to save the show and

onfirming her split from Steve ‘Commando’ Willis after her arrest in January for drink driving, fitness star Michelle Bridges has been left devastated by the breakdown of her six-year relationship, and is holding out desperate hope they will eventually reunite. Now, less than two months after the father of four walked out on her on New Year’s Eve, Michelle’s worse fears have been realised after Steve was caught out with one of his personal training clients. ‘Commando’ has been enjoying cosy dates and intimate nights in with F45 gym trainer Harika Vancuylenberg, who caught his eye after attending his fitness retreat in Tahiti in November, where friends say the chemistry was “undeniable”. On returning to Sydney, the pair kept in touch, passionately reuniting once Steve was officially single. “It’s early days but they are smitten,” confirms a friend. “They have a lot in common – training, healthy lifestyles, both single parents – and [they] [ [t hey] y] jjust ust really enjoy each other’s coompany.” News of Steve’s romance ccomes as M Michelle was llast week

While there were rumours Steve wanted to get back with ex, Froso, it seems she was unwilling to give him a second chance. Now, Harika is more than happy to fill that gap. Spending Valentine’s Day with Steve, the personal trainer was “giddy with excitement and glowing”, looking forward to their hot date at her place. “She was really tired the morning after,” laughs the friend. “She didn’t give away too many details, but it seemed things went as expected.” It would also seem Harika was far from surprised the famous fitness duo had split. “Someone brought it up at the gym; they had read about it and she joked that it was ‘scandalous’, with a knowing smile,” says the friend. Posting photos on her social media, Steve and his new flame certainly seem happy in their relationship, but friends of Michelle have spoken out about the intimate snaps, showing the pair with their arms around one another, which were taken when she and Steve were still an item. “She is not going to be happy when she sees these,” says the friend. “Michelle wants nothing more than to get back together and has always been so paranoid that he would

According to the Facebook page of a fitness centre where Harika worked, like Michelle, who was a trainer on The Biggest Loser, Harika is a great fitness motivator. “Coach Harika is the pocket rocket powerhouse of motivation,” one of her clients commented on the F45 Training The Ponds page.

AT WA JEN’S BIGGEST FEAR: JUSTIN TO WRITE

A

s the two-year anniversary of Jennifer Aniston Brad is worried about and Justin what Justin Theroux’s might write. separation approaches, rumours that Justin is releasing a tell-all have come to the surface once more and Brad Pitt is furious! While Justin has been inundated with book offers since the split, he’s been reluctant to spill the beans until now. An insider revealed: “He’s not a bitter guy by nature, but the fact she’s back with Brad has cut him pretty deep and really bruised his ego. “Justin spent much of their marriage feeling like he was this substitute version of her ex, but she’d assure him time and time again that wasn’t the case. Now it turns out he was right, and that hurts him. It makes Justin feel like he wasted years of his life with the wrong woman, who was ultimately in love with someone else. “Right after Justin and Jen split, he started writing as a way to heal and rebuild his life. It was cathartic to note down the highs and lows, but originally it wasn’t Justin’s intention to call Jen out or say anything negative about their years together. “Now though, all bets are off and there’s a sense from Justin that he has nothing to lose. Besides the fact she’s Jennifer Aniston is believed to be distraught that ignoring him there’s the trial regarding the alleged wrongful death of also a business side to Carmel Musgrove has been postponed to November this year. It means that Jen’s it all and he realises worst nightmare – the possibility of being dragged into court to give evidence there won’t be many – will still hang over her throughout 2020. relationship with Jen.” According to the source, the meatiest material will be documenting what went wrong and what it was like being with someone who’s still in love with their ex. Jen told Justin so much about her past and it’ll really boost the narrative for him to include some of those anecdotes. “That’s gotten back to Jen, as well as Brad, and they’re both freaking out and trying to stop Justin in his tracks,” they add. “They don’t want to resort to an ugly battle if they can help it, which is why Brad has taken this head on and he’s pleading with Justin to see sense and hold off on including passages about Jen or himself. “They’ve had a few chats over the phone and Brad has made the point that this was hurtful and wholly unnecessary, to go so low and dish out secrets he and Jen don’t want told. “But Justin has calmly informed Brad that it’s his right to write this book in any way he wants. He didn’t sign any form of non-disclosure agreement with Jen and their marriage was more of an informal, spiritual ceremony than anything legal. So Brad and Jen are really at Justin’s mercy. “There’s nothing she or Brad can do to change his mind – and he’s not going to hold back.”

GEORGE MOVES OUT!

George Clooney and Amal are moving out! Sources say they are headed back to LA — or George is — full time. “I think it’s very much make or break – they have been in different cities for so long lately and have to make a big push to give the marriage one last try, or it’s surely doomed,” says the source. “He also wants another baby, which she’s been reluctant to do, but it wouldn’t surprise people who know them if he manages to change her mind,” adds the insider. According to the source, George also wants another stab at politics and wants to throw his hat in the ring as a prospective governor of California. They could also be looking to hook up with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, who they are close to and are also said to be planning a move to Hollywood.

I

t’s the palace paternity case that has captivated Australia, and indeed the world. And as Queensland father Simon Dorante-Day’s unprecedented court battle – to prove that Charles and Camilla are his biological parents – gains international momentum, even more new information is coming to light to back up his claims that he’s second in line to the British throne. But while Charles and Camilla have stayed quiet so far, the Duchess of Cornwall this week made a rare and

Simon is convinced that Camilla gave him up for adoption as a toddler.

TOP UK SPY CLAIMED THE QUEEN MOTHER KNEW ABOUT CAMILLA AND CHARLES’ SECRET SON, AUSSIE MAN SIMON DORANTE-DAY

emotional public address hinting at pressures behind the scenes. Speaking from the heart at a reception to honour the domestic violence charity SafeLives, she spoke of the pain of keeping quiet due to feelings of guilt and shame. “No-one knows what goes on behind any front door,” she said in the address. “It affects everybody. It doesn’t matter who you are.” Meanwhile, one of the more interesting and credible new twists surrounding Simon’s claims suggests that the Queen Mother may have known of Simon’s existence nearly 40 years ago and was privy to the extraordinary lengths Camilla and Charles were going to, to conceal his birth and true identity. One of Simon’s loyal supporters found a tip-off which alleged that a famous UK spy, Odette Sansom, who was a confidante of the Queen Mother, was well aware that Charles and Camilla had a secret son. The secret agent was the most highly decorated woman during World War II, and her career as one of Britain’s most respected and elite spies brought her international acclaim. But it seems it wasn’t just confidential wartime exploits Odette was privy to, with claims she knew some of the royal family’s deepest, darkest secrets as well. The tipster wrote the following post: “In 1981, I was working at a hairdresser in Weybridge, Surrey. Odette Sansom was a client of mine,

F SS

she was best friends with the Queen Mother. She told me that Charles had been told to find someone and to get married as it was about to become public that one of Camilla’s children was his. Interesting, maybe it is you!” Further research by Simon’s supporter Kim shows that indeed Odette was living in Surrey at that time, giving weight to the report. “Odette Sansom lived and died in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey,” says Kim. “The hairdressers was in Weybridge, Surrey [10 minutes away].” Simon says he found the new lead “very interesting” and says it’s one of the reasons he wants his story to reach as many people as possible. “Every time I go public with a new chapter in my story, I find that more people come forward with information and that’s great for me,” says Simon. “Since my grandmother first told me I was Charles and Camilla’s son, I’ve spent decades putting together the pieces of evidence and building my case. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle. And pieces of information like this only give me the resolve to keep going and get answers, because I know the truth and it’s time for the truth to come out.” Simon, 53, has long claimed to have material evidence that he is the child of Charles and Camilla, born out of wedlock in 1966 and adopted by a family in Portsmouth, England, who had strong ties to the Queen. Says Simon: “My grandmother, who worked for the Queen, told me outright that I was Camilla and Charles’ son many times.” It’s Simon’s belief that

New claims reveal that spy Odette (below), knew many royal secrets.

Camilla kept him concealed for 18 months after his birth in 1966, before he was adopted out as a toddler when he was getting too old to hide. And while Camilla went on to marry Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973, Charles stayed single until 1981 when he proposed and married Princess Diana after a whirlwind romance – seemingly backing up the hairdresser’s claim.

“THE PALACE HAS GONE TO EXTRAORDINARY LENGTHS TO HIDE MY EXISTENCE” ‘The palace has gone to such extraordinary lengths to hide my existence over the years, I wouldn’t be surprised if marrying off Charles was fast tracked to create a red herring,” said Simon. As Simon – along with his loving wife, academic Dr Elvianna Dorante-Day – continue to sift through new leads and build their case, there’s no doubt that pressure will be mounting on the royal family to address Simon’s claims.

KING

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall have yet to address Simon’s claims.

THE MYSTE

SOL CONCERN IS GROWING

W

hen Harry and Meghan stepped down from their positions as senior royals, they made it clear one of their main priorities would be protecting their son, Archie from the glare of the spotlight. But as the couple have largely walked away from public life to focus on building a new home in Canada, royal fans are waiting eagerly to catch another glimpse of Archie. Now Princess Diana’s former protection officer Ken Wharfe tells New Idea exclusively the doting royal parents are doing the right thing by keeping Archie behind the walls of their rented Vancouver Island mansion. “There’s no doubt Harry and Meghan are concerned about

STAFF SACKED! Giving a very clear sign that they have no intention of returning to the UK, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have closed their Buckingham Palace office and sacked their 15 staff. According to reports, most of the workers will be given redundancy packages although some will be re-assigned to other parts of the royal household. They were told the news in January in person. Former protection officer Ken Wharfe tells New Idea he doubts Harry in particular will stay away from his home country for long. “I personally think he, either with 16

or without his wife Meghan, will return to the UK at some point, how long for, I’m not certain. The sustainability of living on the edge of a cliff in Vancouver Island is not something I can see him or them maintaining for an indefinite period.” Even more shockingly, he believes that Harry’s eventual homesickness could spell the end of his relationship. “I can’t see their sort of marriage lasting in this format because my gut response is that Harry will at some point want to make a return to the United Kingdom,” he says.

RY OF ARCHIE

LVED! FOR THE YOUNG ROYAL his safety,” Ken explains. “There are security risks anyway as two people, and once you’ve got children on board, it becomes an added risk.” Based on his years of work with the royal family, Ken believes the family will likely have a team of six officers permanently protecting them, 24 hours a day. “Archie will be protected

Francisco’s Stanford University for what was described as a “brainstorming session” with professors. They also travelled to Miami to attend a J.P. Morgan conference where Harry gave a speech. Ken explains that it was wise for the royal couple to keep their son at home. “Archie as a royal baby will have a nanny and a nursery.

“HE’S NOT GOING TO GO ANYWHERE BECAUSE IT JUST ADDS TO THE SECURITY RISK” now for the rest of his life. The security that is afforded to the royal family is of such a high calibre that [any incidents such as kidnapping are] unlikely,” he says. It’s been noted that Archie was away from his parents for four days, no doubt to keep him f and d prrotected, while Harry safe aand Meghan recently travelled to the US, where they visited San Harry picks up lunch for two at a local market.

He’s not going to go anywhere because it just adds to the security risk. I’m not an alarmist, but because of where they are now, they are in my view at greater risk.” Archie was last spotted in public over a month ago. On January 20, he was photographed in a baby carrier strapped to Meghan who was walking with her son and two dogs near the family’s Vancouver Island home.

It was later revealed that Prince Harry was so heartbroken at this breach of security that he swiftly issued legal warnings against the British newspapers who had published the pictures. As well as royal fans being concerned that Archie is missing from the public gaze, other members of the royal family in the UK are increasingly concerned he won’t be a part of their lives if he continues to grow up overseas. The Queen is reportedly “saddened” by this. “He will miss growing up around his grandparents, his aunt, uncle and, of course, his young cousins,” a royal source told The Express newspaper last month. But it appears Harry and Meghan simply believe they’re doing

the best for their son. Says Ken: “What you have here with Harry and Meghan is two non-traditionalists. They’ve said no, we’re not going to do it that way, we’ll show you Archie when he’s ready and we’ll do it our way.” At the moment, Meghan and Harry’s security is heavily subsidised by the UK taxpayer, but Ken fears that if they remain “non-operational” royals, this may eventually be stopped, which concerns him greatly. “When Diana jettisoned her security in ’94 against my advice and the advice of others, she had no security, and finally ended up [with a] team of security officers that had no experience working with high profile individuals. And it’s my firm belief that there’s evidence that their inability and lack of professional conduct and experience led ultimately to her death.”

The Sussexes have been told to stop using ‘royal’ in their brand name.

QUEEN’S SHOCK MOVE:

HARRY & MEGHAN BANNED! THE COUPLE HAVE BEEN GIVEN A STERN WARNING

I

n a move that could seriously undermine Prince Harry and Meghan’s bid for independence, the Queen has ordered they stop using ‘Sussex Royal’ as their brand name. The shock announcement came just two months before the couple’s new Sussex Royal Foundation was set to launch, meaning plans for the charitable organisation will now be set back as the couple reconsider their options. The decision was reportedly made by the Queen after lengthy and complex discussions and the Daily Mail reports the “fine details” are still being worked out. It’s likely Harry and Meghan will feel great disappointment after learning this news. Over the past few months they have trademarked numerous products with the Sussex

18

Royal name, which they also use for their social media and website presence. A source told the British newspaper why the decision was inevitable: “If they aren’t carrying out official duties and are now seeking other commercial opportunities, they simply cannot be allowed to market themselves as royals.” Royal correspondent Robert Hardman explained the decision was ultimately a legal one because there are strict rules governing how the monarchy can be used to promote commercial enterprises. The insider added: “In many ways this is inevitable given their decision to step down, but it must surely come as a blow to the couple.”

The royal couple have been in St Moritz.

PRINCE EDWARD & SOPHIE’S DIVORCE DRAMA

With the recent spate of divorces rocking the royal household, it’s likely the Queen is feeling nervous about a third divorce being announced. Last week, royal expert Ingrid Seward revealed that the Queen is “sad but pragmatic” about the announcements of Peter Phillips and David Armstrong-Jones’ marriages ending. But the Majesty editor also noted the Queen feels it’s often “too easy to get divorced”, leading to speculation that she is sending a strong message to

other members of the family who may be considering a break-up – most notably, the Queen’s only child who hasn’t been divorced: Prince Edward. Yet Edward, who was photographed along with wife Sophie and their children James and Louise in the Swiss ski resort of St Moritz last week, appears to have a rock solid marriage. Sophie is reportedly also very close to the Queen, meaning the monarch would be especially devastated if the long-married couple were to split.

CAUGHT OUT! “If Natasha knew she would die,” wrote Stacey in a text to Mikey after their fling.

THE FLIRTY TEXTS THAT UNCOVERED IT ALL

L

ast week, Stacey Hampton confirmed her relationship with ‘spouse’ Michael Goonan was in trouble after she found out he had cheated on her with fellow contestant Hayley Vernon. But it can now be revealed that Stacey had a secret off-camera affair of her own – with Mikey Pembroke. In fact, a series of text messages obtained by New Idea confirms that at the time of filming, Stacey and Mikey’s relationship was surprisingly intimate. “… If Natasha knew she would die,” Stacey wrote in one message to Mikey, to which he replied: “Yep I think so.” And their exchange didn’t end there. In even more flirtatious text messages, the pair all but confirm they’d spent the night together behind their partners’ backs. “Are you coming tonight,” Stacey asks 20

Mikey, who then responds by insisting that one of the show’s producers would not be happy if the duo spent time together. “[She] doesn’t want me near you haha,” he writes. Stacey then replies: “Lol do whatever you want to do. If you don’t feel right then don’t.” She then goes on to offer to return Mikey’s clothes that he’d left behind from the night before. “I still have some of your stuff here which I’ll deliver to you at some point lol.” Never-before-seen photos of Mikey and Stacey having lunch

together last October, during filming, appear to confirm the relationship. With neither of their spouses from the TV experiment in sight, the pair appeared totally absorbed in each other’s company. Despite all the apparent evidence, however, Stacey denies that anything romantic

because he refused to take her word that nothing happened between her and Mikey. “I’m more disappointed at Michael than anyone. If this is how he takes one rumour then he needs a lot of help because honestly there’s going to be a lot of rumours going around in life,” she said.

“HONESTLY, THERE’S GOING TO BE A LOT OF RUMOURS GOING AROUND IN LIFE” occurred between her and the operations manager. Stacey insists: “Nothing happened between Mikey Pembroke and I. No sexual relations. Nothing. I can guarantee that. And I can sit here and swear on anything.” Stacey also reveals that her relationship with her MAFS groom Michael came to an end

But Stacey says she can understand why people got the wrong idea about her and Mikey. “I understand where the rumours came from. We did share

She says that when they first surfaced, she spoke to Mikey, hoping he could provide some degree of insight into where they came from. “He couldn’t even look me in the eye,” says Stacey. The blonde mum of two is determined that people know the truth: “I swear ... that Mikey and I have never shared any sexual intimacy,” she adds. Stacey and Mikey were caught together, grabbing a coffee and enjoying what appeared to be an intimate conversation.

arried at First Sight brides Natasha Spencer and Tash Herz were spotted getting very cosy together while on a romantic couple’s trip to Bali. Lesbian bride Tash hasn’t been afraid to flaunt her new conquest despite the fact she was ‘married’ to her TV wife Amanda Micallef on the Channel Nine show, while Natasha’s marriage to Mikey Pembroke seemingly imploded before filming even ended. The loved-up pair were seen cuddling close while walking down a Balinese street, kissing each other sitting on a grassy ledge and packing on the PDA

before partying at Ku De Ta nightclub in Seminyak. The two ‘Tashes’ didn’t shy away from locking lips and snuggling – the unlikely new couple getting far more intimate for the cameras than they ever did while filming with their respective husband and wife. According to an insider, the ladies sought comfort in each other after they both had terrible experiences on the reality program. “It was a pretty dark time for both girls, but they found comfort in one another which helped to soften the blow,” dishes a close friend of the pair. “When you’re on a show like that, you become very isolated

from the world so tend to rely heavily on those around you who have an understanding of the complex issues.” For Tash – who identifies as gay – the attraction to fellow bride Natasha grew slowly but steadily. But Natasha – who identifies as straight – took a little longer to move things past the platonic. The source says Tash needed time to recover after the acrimonious break-up from her television bride, which had left her emotionally scarred. “Tash was pretty broken after that whole experience and it’s taken her a long time to get back on her feet again,” the friend added. “The relationship with

Amanda may have been brief, but there was damage. Tash needed time to get over that and Natasha has really helped that.” And proving time heals all wounds, Tash and Natasha happily flaunted their new love while in Bali. “They looked like they were having the time of their lives,” reveals an onlooker. “They couldn’t keep their hands off each other. And they were getting a lot of attention from others, too. “If you didn’t know they were from that show Married at First Sight you would definitely think they were in love, the way they were with each other.”

The lovebirds made sure to capture their time together.

n an exclusive video, Married at First Sight star Vanessa Romito has revealed the ugly truth about her relationship with ‘husband’ Chris Nicholls. Barefaced, tearful and angry, Vanessa speaks directly to her phone’s camera in a heartbreaking monologue about Chris. “He is a f--king gaslighting, manipulative piece of s--t,” the 31-year-old says. “He has controlled me and he has destroyed me.” Tears stream down her face as she goes on to claim that Chris feigned interest in her purely for his own benefit, to ensure he didn’t have to leave the show. “If they can literally keep you there for your own f--king agenda, that is just a horrible f--king human,” she cries. “I am now exhausted and I want to go the f--k home. I never want to see Chris again. And it turns out that Chris wasn’t the only contestant Vanessa struggled with, admitting, “I do not trust any

hen Roula and Rachael appeared on Season 9 of My Kitchen Rules, it’s fair to say they had plenty of arguments in the kitchen. But, Roula has admitted the constant fighting actually affected their friendship after they finished filming. “We didn’t see each other that much,” she dishes to New Idea. While many of Roula and Rachael’s friends and family thought they were crazy for deciding to give the cooking show another chance, it couldn’t have worked out better for them. In fact, the experience only brought them closer and has saved their friendship. “We said to ourselves we

We see a lot of each other now and we have become a lot tighter.” What’s more, back in Season 9, the tension between the girls didn’t stay in the kitchen, with Roula and Rachael often finding themselves in the middle of the drama around the dinner table. But Roula is happy to admit this season has been completely different. “It’s a breath of fresh air this time around,” she reveals. “We had a completely different experience this time; we didn’t feel so cornered and bullied by the other teams. From the start of Season 9

we felt out of place. No-one liked us and people were picking on us and we got our guard up and had to be defensive the whole time. “This time we know what we are in for, and we are not going to get manipulated or bullied. We are just going to be us.” The girls want to prove they aren’t here just for the drama but really can create amazing dishes. “We wanted to show that we aren’t these hip-hoppy chicks,” says Roula. “We are human and we do make mistakes and now we have come back to show people our real personalities and that we can cook.” Of course, their initial opportunity didn’t go too well and they ended up in the first elimination, but Roula reveals that moment made them step up their cooking. “We got mentored after our first cook this season,” she shares. “After that we thought it’s time for a change, time to pull our socks up and get a game plan. That was our problem – we didn’t have a game plan.” Indeed the girls got it together and won the elimination. But, after everything that went down with the love triangle between herself, Ben and Lauren, going into the elimination cook wasn’t easy for Roula. “It did rattle me but then MKR: THE RIVALS every time I made a mistake with the food or we had a bad MON. MKR SABOTAGE There’s no doubt this season of MKR: The Rivals has seen a lot of strategic game-playing, but this week one of the contestants will take it further than ever before by attempting to sabotage another contestant’s food. In this week’s episodes the two houses go head to head in a pub food challenge. First up are three teams from House Manu, cooking at the iconic Sydney pub, the Imperial Hotel in Erskineville. Famous as one of the film locations in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, it’s sure to be a colourful venue for the challenge, with the teams cooking for a restaurant full of fabulous drag queens. But during service, the moment every cook fears happens … One of the diners discovers a hair in their meal and returns it to the kitchen! The dish is Roula and Rachael’s shepherd’s pie. Initially shocked, the two pals are positive the hair doesn’t belong to them. So, whose hair can it be?

“I look at the hair and the hair is not my hair and it’s not Rachael’s hair,” says Roula. “I think someone is trying to sabotage our cook. Maybe the drag queen’s eyelash fell in her pie; it was short, thick and looked like a fake eyelash. “Maybe the drag queen purposely did it just so they could meet Manu.” However, with the hair not belonging to Rachael and Roula, the House Manu contestants immediately think someone from House Colin may have deliberately planted the hair in the meal, to ensure that House Manu gets a bad score. But, Rachael is positive that no-one would play that dirty or potentially jeopardise their cook in that way. “At least we hope not,” says Rachael. “Because that’s not what we would ever do!” Did one of the contestants really try to sabotage the girls’ meal or was it all just a case of mistaken identity? Tune in to find out!

PRINCESS DIANA

Perhaps one of the most famous royal deaths of all time was the fatal car crash in the Pont de l’Alma road tunnel in Paris more than 22 years ago as Diana returned from a dinner date with her then-lover, Dodi Fayed. To this day, there has been much speculation surrounding her death. Recently, an unnamed witness came forward and told The Globe the princess had been murdered and that she knew who was behind the plot. “When I first saw her, she was moaning in pain, but conscious. She seemed dazed and disoriented and, at first … I heard her ask, ‘My God, what’s happened?’” the eyewitness began. “She was told she’d been in a terrible car crash and to lie still. She was quiet for a few

heartbeats, then gasped in pain. “Her eyes narrowed and she whispered, ‘He’s killed me! That bloody bastard has killed me. Just like he said. Now what will happen to my boys …’ and she drifted off. “I was in tears – praying, hoping she’d survive. I made the sign of the cross as she was put into the ambulance.” However, the allegation that Diana spoke of being killed does not correspond with previous statements from witnesses at the scene on that night. Dr Frederic Mailliez was the first doctor to reach the scene and, speaking to The Times, confirmed Diana was alive when paramedics reached her. “I tried to comfort her as best I could and ask where the pain was,’’ he said. “She kept saying how much she hurt as I gently put a resuscitation mask over her mouth.” Despite the unfounded shock claims that the princess may have been murdered, Diana’s death remains a mystery to this day and she will never be forgotten.

LORD MOUNTBATTEN Over 40 years ago, in August 1979, the Queen’s second cousin Louis Mountbatten was assassinated by IRA terrorists. While sailing on Mullaghmore Harbour in Ireland on his yacht Shadow V, a bomb that had been planted exploded. The 79-year-old died along with his 14-year-old grandson, Nicholas Knatchbull, and crew member

Paul Maxwell, 15. His daughter’s mother-in-law, Lady Brabourne, died the next day. Lord Mountbatten’s death, labelled an execution by the IRA, came during ‘The Troubles’, when some 3700 lives were lost. His granddaughter, India Hicks, 11 at the time, said: “The damage done was so much deeper than any of us could have imagined.”

GRACE KELLY

Grace Kelly’s death was one of tragic circumstance. The former actress died after she suffered a stroke behind the wheel of her car in 1982. While driving with her daughter Stéphanie, Grace missed a steep turn and ended up driving off a cliff. When paramedics arrived, the 52-year-old was unconscious

NEPALESE ROYAL FAMILY In 2001, Nepal’s crown prince casually walked into a family gathering and shot nine people including his father, the king, before turning the gun on himself. The murderous act was a shock to the nation, yet one staff member said Crown Prince Dipendra had a dark streak. “He was kind of a dual character. Outside, he was very much gentle, very much liked by everyone,” said Lt. Gen. Vivek Kumar Shah, who worked for the palace for 26 years. “But inside, from the beginning, probably, he didn’t

and in a critical condition. A day later, the princess suffered a haemorrhage and never regained consciousness. She died after her husband, Prince Rainier, took her off life support. Sadly, Stéphanie was unable to make her mother’s funeral as she was still in hospital recovering from her injuries.

TSAR NICHOLAS AND FAMILY get the love he should have as a child. That’s what my belief is. “He had a kind of sadistic nature. He would burn a cat or a mouse. He would enjoy that.” A cousin, Ketaki Chester, said Dipendra burst into the room with a look of terror. “I still remember it, and still it gives me the creeps when I remember his face. He looked exactly like the Terminator 2 – absolutely expressionless, but very concentrated. And it still haunts me, that look of his.”

Following the February Revolution, and Tsar Nicholas Romanov’s abdication in 1917, Bolshevik forces held him and his family as prisoners, taking them from one place to another before the former ruler, his wife, Alexandra, and five children, Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia and Alexei were shot and bayoneted to death. This was done by order of Vladimir Lenin. Their bodies were taken to the Koptyaki forest where they were mutilated. In 1979 and 2007, remains were discovered in two unmarked graves. The graves were reopened and the identities confirmed by DNA testing. 29

SHAUN WEISS

O

n January 26, one-time child star Shaun Weiss was again arrested, this time after breaking into a California house while reportedly high on drugs. The former The Mighty Ducks star has been battling meth addiction for years and his latest mugshot revealed the 41-year-old’s shocking physical decline.

CHILD STARS IN TROUBLE AMANDA BYNES

Soon after retiring from acting aged 24, the former Nickelodeon star began hitting the headlines for her worrying behaviour. By 2014 Amanda was placed under a conservatorship after a series of hospitalisations and police run-ins. Having been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and struggling with addiction, Amanda, 33, entered rehab last year – but by December had reportedly fled the sober house she was living in. Last month she prompted concern again after posing with what appeared to be a facial tattoo.

EDWARD FURLONG After finding fame as a teenager in Terminator 2, Edward’s acting career took a nosedive when he descended into drug use and alcoholism in his 20s. In 2009 his wife Rachael Bella filed for divorce, alleging their baby son had tested positive for cocaine, and soon after filed a retraining order after the actor assaulted her in a drug-fuelled rage. After multiple arrests for other domestic assaults, Edward was jailed in 2013. The 42-year-old insists he’s now sober after a 2018 rehab stint.

AARON CARTER

The child singer turned reality star prompted concern last year when brother Nick claimed Aaron had confessed to wanting to harm Nick’s pregnant wife. After reportedly battling addiction and mental health issues, and attending multiple rehabs, last year Aaron revealed

he’d been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, among other conditions. In November, Nick and sister Angel were granted one-year restraining orders against the 32-year-old.

UP, DOWN AND UP AGAIN:

THE COMEBACK STARS!

DREW BARRYMORE

She was hanging out in nightclubs and drinking alcohol at 9, smoking marijuana at 10, using cocaine by 12 and after attempting suicide, was in rehab lockdown by 13 years old. At 14, Drew legally emancipated herself

from her parents and went to work rebuilding her by then faltering career, which had taken off when she starred in E.T. at just 6 years old. Now 44, she’s still an actress as well as a movie producer, makeup mogul and mum.

MACAULAY CULKIN

After a career as one of the most famous child stars of all time, Macaulay largely withdrew from the public eye in the mid ’90s. In 2004 he was arrested for possessing marijuana and two controlled substances [benzodiazepines] but avoided jail. Then in 2012,

JOEY GAYDOS JR

His only acting gig was playing young guitar prodigy Zack Attack in 2002’s School of Rock, but last year Joey Gaydos Jr hit the headlines for racking up four police arrests in five weeks. The musician was charged with larceny and grand theft after

photos of him looking shockingly gaunt – amid reports he was living with infamously drugaddicted musician Pete Doherty – prompted alarm. But in 2016 Macaulay denied claims he was addicted to heroin, and in recent years the star has made a low-key return to acting.

LINDSAY LOHAN

stealing multiple guitars from various Florida music shops, as well as two amplifiers from his father. It was later reported the 28-year-old admitted that proceeds from the theft went to fund his addiction, and that he wanted to seek treatment.

After a successful career as a child star in movies like The Parent Trap and Freaky Friday, by 2007 Lindsay was better known for her wild partying and frequent arrests. By 2010, after multiple DUIs and probation violations, Lindsay spent short spells in jail and

longer ones in rehab. But by May 2015, she was finally off probation, and since then has worked in reality TV, as a singer and a nightclub mogul, and last month announced she was returning to the US to relaunch her acting career, after sitting on The Masked Singer panel. 31

MELISSA’S SON MADE SOME TERRIBLE CHOICES AND NOW SHE IS TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OF THEM

M

Melissa’s 18-year-old son Jordan also died in the crash.

elissa McGuinness was sitting on the lounge with her morning cup of tea. It was December 2012, and she was laughing about her teenage son, Jordan, with her husband Peter. “He’d just started an apprenticeship as a builder,” she tells New Idea. “He said he was going to build a house and put a granny flat on for us. Peter and I were joking we weren’t quite ready for that. But it was lovely of him.” The noise from the buzzer at their Gold Coast apartment ripped through their quiet morning. The

visitors who had sounded it were about to deliver news that would rip through the McGuinnesses’ lives. “It’s sobering seeing two policemen on the other side of your front door,” Melissa, 49, says. “I remember walking them up the stairs to the apartment and my legs were like jelly. I knew I was going to be told something which would change my life.” On the same lounge where they’d enjoyed a cup of tea just moments before, Melissa and Peter, Jordan’s stepfather, were told their 18-year-old son had been fatally injured in a car crash. Not only that, but he was responsible for the deaths of four young people who’d been

sitting in their broken-down car at the side of the road. “I heard it and I understood it but none of it made sense,” Melissa says. “I still feel sick thinking about that moment. It’s the day that’s haunted me for the last seven years.” As more news filtered in, the situation became even more unbelievable for Melissa. Jordan was over the limit, had marijuana in his system and was driving 30km over the speed limit. “We were shattered with grief but, at the same time, I didn’t feel I had a right to grieve,” Melissa says. “I didn’t even feel I deserved sympathy. That was for Jordan’s victims.” “Everything he’d done and

Melissa felt guilty for grieving when her son died in 2012.

THE OATLANDS TRAGEDY

On Saturday February 1 this year, four children lost their lives when a drunk driver allegedly mounted the kerb and struck a group of seven children. Three siblings Anthony, 13, Angelina, 12, and Sienna Abdallah, 9, and their cousin Veronique Sakr, 11, tragically died at the scene in Oatlands in western Sydney. The driver, 29-year-old Samuel William Davidson, was allegedly three times over the legal blood alcohol limit when he struck the group as they made their way to an ice-cream shop. Davidson has been charged with actually a very 20 offences, including four counts of relatable kid from a manslaughter.

ILLED EOPLE’ achieved in his life paled into insignificance. It didn’t mean anything. He’d killed four people because of the choice he made to drink, take drugs and speed. That was his legacy.” In their horribly lonely position, the family struggled with how to move forward. “How do you plan a funeral?” Melissa says. “You can’t celebrate his life. I didn’t want a big thing. It didn’t feel like the right thing to do but we had to help his sisters (Montana then 10, and Kitty, 4) with their grief. At the same time I was trying to process my own grief and my guilt around even feeling it. “It was all so hard to make sense of.” In 2017, in an attempt to

seek some kind of purpose from the wasteland left in Jordan’s wake, Melissa agreed to speak at a Survive Alive, Victims Expo (SAVE) event. “I spoke for 24 minutes and I was surprised. The 500 kids stopped and listened,” she says. “The feedback afterwards was so positive I thought I should find the fortitude to do it again.” That 24 minutes has turned into the basis of a presentation program and social change movement Melissa and Peter, 52, are now spearheading throughout Australian schools. “People are justified in seeing Jordan’s story and thinking ‘What a disgrace. What kind of background must he come from?’,” Melissa says. “But he’s

relatable family. He was a much-loved, typical teenager who made a series of terrible choices.” The couple approach the topic of lethal driving habits from a unique perspective. “I show the kids a picture of myself crying in the days after Jordan’s death and I ask them to imagine that being their mum, dad or siblings,” Melissa says. “It’s about showing them consequences – the horror and permanent scarring their bad choices can cause.” They are also aiming to make it socially unacceptable to drive recklessly. Instead of being a teenage rite of passage, they want young people to call-out their peers who tailgate, speed or drive distracted, drunk or drugged. After huge success with more than 50 schools last year, Melissa and Peter have set up a not-for-profit organisation called You Choose – Youth Road Safety. Georgie Gardner is an ambassador and their mission is to reach every school in Australia. In the meantime, stories like the Oatlands tragedy remind them of the importance of what they’re doing. “I have profound respect for Mr and Mrs Abdallah, who have

conducted themselves with incredible grace in the midst of unthinkable misery.” Melissa says. “I also take my hat off to the alleged perpetrator’s parents for their bravery in making a statement. “There was a lot of hate directed at us in the early days and understandably so,” she adds. “I don’t begrudge people feeling that way. I’m just pleased that now some people are able to see we are doing our absolute best to create some momentum for change – to help young people take personal accountability for rejecting reckless driving under any circumstances.” By Emma Levett

TOO FAT FOR

SO I LOST 7

A

woman who was dumped by her boyfriend after doctors told her she was too fat to conceive has since lost 77kg and dropped nine dress sizes in one year. Financial service analyst, Alida Dreyer, 27, from Sydney, was overweight as a young child, which lead to severe bullying at school. Although Alida has a disposition to weight gain due to genetics and was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) at 13, she admits she had all the tools needed to lose weight but refused to use them because she was addicted to food. “I have always been the ‘big girl’, ever since I can remember. Food was my vice and with it came a passion for cooking and baking,” Alida says. “I chose a career in counselling to help other people so I could avoid facing 34

my own problems, having suffered anxiety and depression since I was 13.” Alida was depressed as a teen; she hated herself, was self-harming and had suicidal thoughts. With such low self-esteem, she worried that no-one could ever love her, so became a people-pleaser by saying yes to everything. “I didn’t want to live. I learnt to act confident and happy by being the person who constantly makes jokes. I felt like no-one could love me the way I looked so I became the ‘yes girl’ who agreed to everything,” she says. “Besides my own family calling me fat all the time, other people said things like, ‘You have a pretty face for a fat girl’ and, ‘You’d be pretty if you lost weight’. People sometimes made ‘Thump, thump, thump’ noises behind me. I was horrified and ran to the bathroom crying,” Alida remembers. “I hated my body and covered it with loose clothing. I wore low-cut tops to try and distract people away from looking at my body.” At 144kg, Alida was sweating all the time and struggled to fit into plane seats, where she needed to use the seatbelt extenders. She couldn’t walk far without developing crippling pains in her calves and severe chafing, and being a dress size 26, none of the clothes she wanted to wear would fit. “Imagine weighing that much and trying to squeeze into an airplane seat. I had to ask for the belt extender and the armrests dug so deeply into my thighs they left bruises,” Alida says. “I couldn’t even walk 100m without my calves cramping

and getting chafing so bad I bled. I was always sweating on hot summer days and being intimate was impossible

to learn to love myself.” Through a combination of diet and exercise, Alida managed to drop 40kg, and

“I WAS TRYING TO HAVE A BABY AND DOCTORS TOLD ME I COULDN’T CONCEIVE AT THE SIZE I WAS” because your body can’t move the way it should,” she admits. “In a day I ate about 3500 calories, which consisted of four slices of toast loaded with butter and Vegemite for breakfast with two large coffees and sugar. At lunch I ate large portions of sushi with macaroni and cheese. “At dinner I’d have pizza and I’d snack on bags of crisps, hot chips and biscuits and washed it all down with high sugar cordial and fruit juice.” Alida didn’t start dating until she was 18 and had her first boyfriend at 20, but was too embarrassed to be with him intimately or naked. At 23 she was ready to have a baby, but health professionals told her she was too fat to conceive. When a month later, her relationship ended, Alida knew she needed to change her life for the better. “Since I was 6 years old, I always wanted to be a mother. When I was 23, I was trying to have a baby and was told that I would not be able to conceive at the size I was,” she says. “A month later my toxic relationship ended, and my world came crashing down. crime The media in the 1930s were filled with reports of women found dead in Sydney.

he womans woman’s body was found by a local teenager, in a bed of brambles in a quiet, overgrown part of Sydney’s Queens Park. A small, slight woman named Iris Marriott had been bludgeoned to death by her attacker. Five months earlier, in July 1932, another young woman had been brutally killed in a similar manner in Sydney’s Centennial Park. Hilda White, like Iris, was working as a prostitute at the time of her death, and police

were quick to assume both deaths were ‘lust killings’. As Tanya Bretherton writes in The Killing Streets, it was widely assumed their murders were the result of their “dangerous and immoral work”. But they weren’t the first women working as prostitutes to be sexually assaulted, murdered and left in a park. In 1922, Daisy Maude Kearney was found in Moore Park. She had been killed with a blow to her head. Further south, Rebecca May Anderson was found in scrub in Long Bay in 1924. In 1929, a woman known

as Vera was found in Hyde Park. It wasn’t until the death of Bessie O’Connor, a 16-yearold from Redfern, in December 1932, that the spate of murders really caught the public’s attention. Newspapers quickly became obsessed with the ‘sex slaying’ of women in Sydney’s parks and police began to wonder if the murders were linked. It

On January 6, 193 detectives rounded in on their suspect: Eric Roland Craig, who lived on Moore Park Road, just steps away from Centennial Park. Father of two and husband to Mary-Caroline, Craig had worked in the tie department at David Jones but

was at that point unemployed. There are no records explaining why police believed the 25-yearold was involved. But during interrogation, Craig confessed to killing Iris. He explained how he’d picked her up in a stolen car then taken her to

Queens Park. After telling Iris he didn’t have any money to pay for her services, she got angry, they fought and Craig bludgeoned her with a piece of wood. He told police: “I must have been mad. I killed her.” In March 1933, a jury found Craig guilty of manslaughter and he was sentenced to 20 years. Days later, he was put on trial for Bessie’s murder despite denying any involvement. The jury couldn’t agree and a second, then third, trial was set. In June 1933, Craig was finally found guilty of Bessie’s murder and sentenced to death. After his case was taken up by an

anti-death penalty group, this was changed to a life sentence. When he was freed in 1957, he was considered completely rehabilitated. While Eric Craig was locked up, more Sydney women were killed in public parks, in very similar circumstances to Iris, Bessie and Hilda. It’s possible another person entirely, even Sydney’s first serial killer, was responsible for these deaths as well as the earlier ones. In 1964, 12 months after Eric’s probation period ended, the body of another woman was found just six kilometres from his home in south Sydney. Barbara Judith Makin, 17, was found unclothed, in a public reserve with deep wounds to her head. Charles Doherty, the man later convicted of Barbara’s murder, told police he had no memory of hurting the girl. He said, “Everything seems to be a blank”. By Emma Babbington

crime IS THE NANNY KILLER

HIDING IN AUSTRALIA? O

n a rainy November night in 1974, inside a pub in Belgravia, London, all that could be heard was the gentle clinking of glasses and the low buzz of conversation. The quiet was interrupted when a distressed and bloodied woman burst through the door of the Plumbers Arms. “Help me, help me!” she shrieked. “I’ve just escaped from being murdered. He’s in the house. He’s just murdered the nanny!” The screaming woman was Lady Lucan. She’d just fled her home at No. 46, Lower Belgrave Street in the lavish London suburb, leaving her three children in their beds. When police and emergency officers arrived at the scene, the countess – named Veronica – led them inside her home and down to the breakfast room. In the poorly lit room, they found a pool of blood leading to a doorway, which concealed a sack. Stuffed inside was the corpse of 27-year-old Sandra Rivett, the children’s nanny. Sandra had been beaten to death with a blunt object. Lady Lucan did not mince her words when she pointed police to the killer. It was her estranged husband, Lord Lucan, she claimed. But there was no sign of Lucan – born Richard John Bingham. By all accounts, he 38

had simply vanished. Veronica claimed she walked in after her husband had battered Sandra, prompting him to attack her too. He hit her in the head, forced fingers down her throat

had escaped Lucan’s clutches by squeezing his testicles and running for her life. The police never had a chance to interview Lord Lucan – by the next morning, he was gone.

“WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOUR MOTHER HAD BEEN KILLED AND NOONE WAS BROUGHT TO JUSTICE?” and attempted to gouge out her eyes. In the years following the attack, Veronica maintained Lucan had meant to kill her, but had accidentally murdered Sandra in the dark. She told authorities she

Three days later, a car Lucan had borrowed was discovered in East Sussex on the English Coast. The interior was covered in bloodstains and a piece of lead pipe was found in the truck. A nationwide manhunt for

Lucan came up with nothing. By 1975, an official inquest confirmed Lucan had killed Sandra and he was formally found guilty in the court. Still, Lucan was on the run. Sandra’s murder remained a subject of international headlines due to the conspiracies surrounding Lucan’s whereabouts. Veronica believed her ex-husband had killed himself not long after he went ‘missing’, while others thought he’d moved overseas to avoid capture. In 1999, Lord Lucan was legally declared dead and in 2016, an official death certificate was released.

Lord Lucan’s wife Veronica (both left) told police her husband had killed the nanny then attacked her (home pictured right).

But the weird and wacky theories around his whereabouts continued to swirl. By 2017, Lucan had been ‘spotted’ by people around the world more than 70 times. The latest sighting comes from Sandra’s own son, Neil Berriman, who in January 2020 claimed Lucan was alive and living as a Buddhist in Perth. If alive, Lucan would be 85. Neil, a builder from Sussex, only discovered 12 years ago his mother was the slain nanny. “I know he’s still alive,” Neil told Scotland Yard, according to The Sun. Neil believes his mother’s killer is seriously ill, needs

surgery, and currently lives in a detached house in Perth’s suburbs. “I believe I have tracked down the man, Lord Lucan, who murdered my mother,” he explained to police. “He has been alive all this time. Lying about who he is. Lying about it to his new friends. He added: “There is absolutely no doubt in my mind he escaped that night, with the help of friends who helped him get across the Channel and get a new passport, and incredibly he is still alive. “From my own inquiries he has had at least six different identities.”

Scotland Yard have declined to comment on any developments, however the Met Police’s cold case team are investigating Neil’s claims. Neil says he has spent more than $57,000 of his own money to try to track down Lucan. He’s even deployed facial recognition technology to help prove the man he believes to be Lucan is his mother’s killer. “But I consider every penny was well spent – it has enabled me to get where we are today. It took over my life but it had to be done. “I know Neil believes some people Lucan is alive would say that and hiding out in Australia.

it’s become an obsession. “What would you do if your mum had been killed, and no-one had been brought to justice, and the man who killed her was never found? You’d do exactly what I’ve done to discover the truth, I think. This has brought me and my family so much stress and heartache.” By April Glover

When I am going to cook eggplant, do I need to salt it first? WENDY, VIA EMAIL.

A

No, it’s not necessary to salt eggplant. Traditionally, this was done to extract any bitter flavour, but modern eggplants have had that bred out of them. Salting will extract moisture, which helps them to absorb less oil during cooking, but it is far easier and healthier to lightly spray each slice of eggplant with cooking oil before pan-frying.

The Mermade Hair Waver is the best tool I’ve tried in a long time. Admittedly, I’m not the best at doing my hair and when it comes to curling, I’ve always put it in the too hard basket. Also, I never have enough time to commit to it in the mornings when I am trying to rush out the door to work. However, when the Mermade arrived, promising to deliver big, bouncy waves in seconds, I was eager to try it out. Turns out it really is as foolproof as it looks. Think of it as a giant crimper, disguised as a three-barrel curling wand, which produces as tight or big a curl as you want.

MEET THE LATEST IN PRODUCTS, TOOLS AND TREATMENTS WE’RE LOVING THIS YEAR My hair is currently medium length and I like a softer, beach-wave type of curl, so I used the three barrels from about 2.5cm down from the roots, then one barrel on the ends for a little extra bounce. Before heading to a friend’s birthday after work last Friday night, I had about 15 minutes to change and fix my makeup and hair before I ran out the door again. I curled my hair, brushed it out, and added a small amount of hairspray, all in about five minutes! Needless to say, I’m a big fan and I thoroughly recommend giving the Mermade a try.

FAUX GLOW

Trying to maintain your postholiday glow? Try a spritz of subtle colour with this tanning mist, which is packed with aloe vera to both soothe and hydrate your skin. The formula won’t clog pores, but it will leave your skin perfectly highlighted.

Known as the non-surgical facelift, this non-invasive, skin-tightening facial uses vibration and heat to help tighten and brighten, and reduce crepiness, wrinkles and fine lines in the skin, with little to no down-time and minimal discomfort. And, unlike lasers, it suits any skin tone and type. I had the treatment done on my neck as, at 43, I felt my skin was showing signs of crepiness and lines were becoming more pronounced. The procedure was slightly painful at times, but not unbearable. I went straight back to work, with no appearance of redness, and my skin immediately

felt tighter. The best results are said to come after eight weeks, and last for one to two years. I am thrilled with the results and it has only been seven weeks. Treatments priced from $2000. For more information visit mdcosmedicalsolutions.com.au or thermage.net.au. 57

t’s estimated that the average woman gains 1-2 kg during the perimenopausal transition (and lots of women gain more). You may also notice your body shape changing as hormones also cause a shift in body fat distribution which can cause it to settle in your belly. The good news is that it is possible to get back down to the weight you feel happiest at. “There is no silver bullet, weight loss is a daily battleground for me too,” says GP Dr Ginni Mansberg in her new book The M Word: How to Thrive in Menopause.

WRITE IT DOWN

Text: Tara Ali

You are eating more than you think and moving less than you think. A famous study of people who were obese, eating 1200 calories a day and not losing any weight, was published in The

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT DURING MENOPAUSE

New England Journal of Medicine in 1992, and is still relevant today. The hypothesis was that these people had a ‘slow metabolism’. But it turned out that they were under-reporting their eating by 47 per cent and over-reporting their exercise by 51 per cent. Getting it wrong is common – and from the available evidence, it does seem that writing down everything you eat does help with weight loss, and is a cheap and effective tool.

WAVE GOODBYE TO WINE O’CLOCK One 175ml glass of red wine has 520 kilojoules. A gin and tonic is about 600kJ. Given that to lose weight we generally recommend a total of 5000-6300kJ a day, just two glasses of wine can add up to more than a fifth of your daily budget. Cutting back on alcohol can also prevent overeating and binge eating, especially in people with poor impulse control.

GET ORGANISED You need to have good food in the house or you will have no

choice but to order in takeaway for dinner. If you haven’t brought a healthy snack to work, then you’ll probably scoff down the birthday cake on offer. I buy a stack of vegies that will keep for the week: capsicums, snow peas, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes. Have them washed and ready to take with you to work as a pre-prepared meal or snack. For me, a little reusable lunch box of vegetables is a great lunch, with a hard-boiled egg or a small tub of cottage cheese and a couple of wholegrain crackers.

ARE YOU REALLY HUNGRY? I used to send countless women to dietitians, who would helpfully advise them not to have a packet of chips, but instead have some celery sticks and hummus. Women who are battling their weight know this. Instead, try mindfulness around eating in menopause. Try to take more notice of whether you are eating because: • The clock says it’s time to eat • Because you are bored and it helps pass the time • Just because everyone else is eating Paying attention can help you to acknowledge whether there are any habits that can be changed. Eating more slowly when you do eat also helps you eat less.

This is an edited extract from The M Word: How to Thrive in Menopause by Dr Ginni Mansberg (Murdoch Books, $32.99) 59

MAKE RETIREMENT

now!

E

veryone has a different idea of what they want from retirement living and it’s not a one-size-fits all approach. There are a lot of options. You might want to downsize and live a more stressfree life where you’re free to travel and don’t need to look after the family home anymore. Or perhaps you’re looking at options for your mother or father? There is a lot of information to get through. We asked positive ageing advocate Marcus Riley for key considerations to help individuals determine the right retirement living options and the importance of investing time in considering such options.

PLAN As with successful ageing more generally, the best way to ensure that you access the best care for your needs is by maximising your available choices, which is achieved through planning what you may require, what you want and where you want to be. This will involve considering some what-if scenarios which isn’t exactly a joy to ponder but it is well worth doing. It is about contemplating what is important to you, so that your personal priorities govern future decisions. Planning will help you maintain control at a time where you are at greatest risk of having no control. PREFERENCES Individuals need to establish criteria along with their personal preferences that need to be met. For instance, consider location and ask yourself, Do I want to be somewhere I live now? Somewhere closer to my family? Do I want to live in an urban area or by the seaside? Additionally, the range of services and amenities needs to be considered to ensure that they are suited to individual needs and preferred lifestyle.

HARD CONVERSATIONS BRING EASE

Ask yourself if there is a good physical therapy program to help me maintain my mobility? Does the physical environment appeal to me? Is green space important to me? Do I need a place with a view? Which village will keep me connected with community and a support network?

RESEARCH I encourage individuals to spend time researching which providers are reputable and most aligned with their personal needs and wants, as it will pay rich dividends. In researching your options, it’s important to obtain information about the provider organisation and ascertain what their values and reputation are, as well we who is leading them. I’d strongly urge individuals to speak with people who possess direct experience of a village – that ideally would be residents and families, but could also be staff, a GP or other service providers associated with the village. It is vital to obtain full details regarding fees and charges as they may vary from place to place and identify any hidden costs.

ASK Asking questions is a great way to get some insight into the reputation of the village owner and their structure. Do your own research and speak with people who live there and key staff members – this will allow you to check that the organisation is aligned to your own values. UNDERSTAND It’s imperative to properly understand all of the details of the financial and contractual arrangements. Be proactive and seek your own legal advice so that you are completely clear and confident with the terms and conditions of your purchase and ongoing arrangements. This is something you want to be clear-cut from the start. The financial aspects of aged care arrangements can be rather complex and will be influenced by an individual’s circumstances so proper analysis is necessary and the obtaining professional advice worth considering.

I remember the day my mum and stepdad told me they had appointed me as executor of their will and power of attorney. I didn’t want to hear about it. I didn’t want to think of them dying or about selling their lovely home. Worse, I didn’t want to think about making decisions if they were too ill or incapacitated to do it themselves. But after I unclamped my hands from my ears, it turned out to be one of the best conversations I’ve ever had. We talked about what they wanted their later years to look like, including where and how they might like to live, what was important to them and the choices they would make if they couldn’t articulate them for themselves. They even had funeral instructions – my mum, who is a lover of colour, particularly yellow, didn’t want anyone wearing black. The beauty of these discussions is that it forces you to focus not only on what matters to your loved ones but also to you. I began thinking about what life after 50 might look like. Would I have enough money? Would I like to retire or keep working in some capacity (a big yes!)? How would I like to spend my time? What volunteer work would I like to do? How could I stay as healthy as possible – both physically and mentally? I even thought about what sort of grandparent I might like to be even though my daughters would be horrified to think about that right now! But as the saying goes: Failure to prepare is preparation for failure. I have seen one woman left destitute after her husband died suddenly without a will in place. I’ve seen others anxious in their advancing years through lack of financial planning. And we’ve all heard stories of families splintered by death or advanced life choices which weren’t adequately communicated before it was too late. Talking about death is, in fact, talking about life. My dad, for instance, doesn’t want a funeral. So when my brother and I had a drink with him recently we recounted the stories we’d likely tell at the wake we organised on his behalf. As we laughed at his expense, it reminded me how important it is to be truly present with the people you love. To plan your last days is a privilege because it means you’re still breathing. 61

IT PAYS TO GET TRAVEL INSURANCE ANYTIME YOU HEAD OVERSEAS, ESPECIALLY TO THESE COUNTRIES

The most EXPENSIVE COUNTRIES

FOR MEDICAL-RELATED INSURANCE CLAIMS

S

outhern Cross Travel Insurance recently revealed the most expensive countries for medical-related claims. The USA, Canada, and Peru take the top three spots for the highest claim costs, with Greece, Indonesia and New Zealand close behind. Thailand, Japan, Cyprus and Spain round out the list, according to the data collected. The largest individual claim was for $187,000, from a customer who fell while hiking at the historic Machu Picchu site. The 65-year-old suffered a fractured femur which required surgery, followed by a lengthy recovery due to complications. In another case, a 45-year-old fell ill in the USA and was hospitalised with dizziness and vertigo. After being diagnosed with an inner ear disorder, the traveller made a claim for $88,000. While no traveller expects to be the one to get sick overseas and require extensive 62

medical treatment, the reality is that this can happen to anyone, regardless of how fit and healthy they are. “Medical incidents occurring on holidays are extremely stressful due to the compounding factors of being away from a familiar home environment, not speaking the language and not knowing the local healthcare system,” says Southern Cross Travel Insurance chief executive, Chris White. “Travel claims are rarely isolated to the costs associated with being ill and receiving treatment. Some of the highest claims we receive are for tourists requiring extended accommodation for recovery or medically assisted travel back home. The knowledge that these extra costs can be covered by travel insurance is a huge relief to travellers suffering away from home.”

DIFFICULT SUBJECTS

TO BRING UP WITH YOUR TEEN COMMUNICATING WITH TEENAGERS IS OFTEN A CHALLENGE – AND BRINGING UP HOT-ISSUE TOPICS ISN’T EASY

P

sychologist Dr Justin Coulson says a good starting point is being upfront about how they make everyone feel uncomfortable. “Say, can we have a chat about one of those really embarrassing topics no-one really wants to talk about but it’s really important that we do? By doing that the kids will roll their eye but they want to talk to us about these things. When we ask for permission they’re happy to begin the conversation.” Justin says we need to explore teenagers’ attitudes and knowledge. “By being curious, we give them the option to open up more instead of shutting them down,” he explains. After that, he advises parents’ ask, “How do you keep yourself safe, how do you make healthy decisions. That’s when we empower. The process there is, once I get where you’re coming from and you know where I’m coming from, we can work out a solution together.”

1

SEX You might assume your teenager knows everything, but now’s the time to fill in the blanks and dispel any myths they might be carrying. Ask what they know – and don’t know – about how contraception works, how STIs are caught, prevented and treated and what plans they have in place for an unexpected pregnancy.

2

CONSENT Ask your teenager for their views on consent and how it impacts their life. Watch the famous Tea Consent YouTube clip together and ask how this relates to their experiences. Talk about how consent needs to be mutual, continuing and emphatic; that everyone is allowed to change their mind and say no at every stage of sexual activity. Ask your teen about the grey areas and what they might do during the times when they’re not sure about their own feelings or someone else’s.

3

PORN Most teenagers have seen it online, whether by choice, by mistake or because someone else showed them. Ask them what their views are and what messages porn sends. Open up the conversation about whether it blurs the lines of consent, normalises aggressive sexual behaviour and can be addictive.

4

SEXTING Ask what they know about sexting, what they think the risks are and what happens when a photo is out there in the world. Talk about the

legalities as well as the emotional consequences. Ask what they would do if they were sent a nude photo or they decided to send one? What happens after a photo leaves their phone?

5

DRUGS, ALCOHOL AND VAPING Most teenagers are curious about trying the forbidden but asking what they know about the risks is a good way to open up the conversation. Peer pressure is everything at this age; help them come up with strategies on how to say no. Talk about how most teenagers don’t drink, do drugs, vape or smoke, but the minority who do are often the most vocal.

6

PHONE ADDICTION It’s hard to argue with a teenager spending too much time on their phone when the adults in their lives are just as addicted. Instead, make phone usage a family issue. Talk about whether you all need to limit screen time and come up with rules for everyone, like no-screen zones, having time limits for phone usage, no phones after eight or in bedrooms.

they can call you any time without fear of repercussions. Bring up worst-possible-case scenarios and ask what your teen would do in those situations.

7

9

STRANGER DANGER While your teenager’s social circle might be small in real life, online they might have a huge number of followers. Ask who follows them on their social media accounts. Do they let strangers follow them? Ask your child about messaging. What do they do when a follower contacts them and wants to chat? Pose the question: can we ever be sure a person is who they say they are online?

8

PARTIES Parties often become a part of a teenager’s life by mid to late high school so it’s important to ask your child how they keep themselves safe. Ask them about their back-up plan when they get stranded or in an unsafe situation, work out ground rules together and make sure your child knows how to get home or that

MENTAL HEALTH Just as you might check in on their physical health, do the same with their mental well-being. Adolescence can be a tumultuous time and many kids suffer silently with anxiety, depression, anger, self-harm and body image issues. Ask them how they’re doing and how they’re feeling. Check in on them regularly during times of stress like exams, friendship dramas or other changes. Remind them that there are services like Lifeline and Headspace that can offer help too.

10

SEXUALITY AND GENDER IDENTITY While the world is more accepting than it used to be, coming out to the world is still a huge challenge for LGBTQI+ kids. They are more likely to be bullied, harassed, suffer mental health challenges and feel unsafe. Open up the discussion so they know they’re supported and as a way to encourage them to support their LGBTQI+ friends. By Emma Babbington Miss-Connection by Dr Justin Coulson is on sale now. Five students sat their final exam for the semester. Can you work out which lucky charm they took with them, their exam result and their overall rank for the semester?

HOW TO SOLVE

Read the clues and place a tick in an intersecting box if you have any positive information and use a cross if you have any definite negative information. For example, you learn that Timmy scored 100% on the exam, so we have placed some ticks and crosses in the grid to help you along. Using this method you should be able to fill in the smaller grid.

BATTLESHIP CRUISERS

Find the four submarines, three destroyers, two cruisers and one battleship in the grid! The number next to each row and column tells you how many of the squares in that row or column contain a vessel or part of a vessel. They may be lying vertically or horizontally, but no two vessels are ever in adjacent squares in any direction.

DESTROYERS SUBMARINES

Answer the clues, entering each letter into the appropriately numbered section of the ring. When the puzzle is complete, the letters will spell a movie title (5,10) reading clockwise from number 1.

Q

NENE KING

I am on a tight budget and have an elderly dog that has a condition, unfortunately. The ongoing cost of expensive medication is leaving me short. One person said I could have my dog put down if I can’t afford the vet medication, but my dog isn’t at that stage yet. I think it would be cruel to put an animal down that still has quality of life. I understand vet clinics are a business and they can’t offer the medication cheaper. Any advice on what I could do in this situation? KELLY, VIA EMAIL.

A

I sympathise with you. The constant vet bills drain my bank balance. My friend gets his dog’s medication cheaper online, or you could talk to the vet about the charges. Perhaps you could agree to pay off the bill? Might be worth checking out pet insurance. Forget the person who suggested you put the dog down. You will just have to tighten your budget. Your dog’s welfare comes first.

Q

My neighbour seems really suspicious. I’ve never formed a proper relationship with this person but they always lurk around my front yard and act like they’re looking for something. They always come home at strange hours and I only see them out at night, not during the day. It makes me really nervous because I live alone. I may be overthinking it. I just want to feel safe, though. What should I do to handle this? ANONYMOUS, VIA EMAIL.

A

If you see them in the front yard, ask if there is anything you can do to help. Keeping strange hours doesn’t mean the person is up to no good. Your neighbour may lead a different life but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t feel safe. Getting to know them may help you relax; you will find out more about their life and realise they are not threatening. Don’t let your imagination run riot. Whether it be relationships, work, family or just personal troubles, Nene King can tackle any question given to her. Send your life questions to nene@newidea.com.au.

BEYOND HEAVEN AND EARTH

I

PET OF THE WEEK

My grandson, Henry, melts my heart when he smiles. RENATE SALZKE, WEST WODONGA, VIC.

’m one of those people who collects quotes – one of my favourites is by Shakespeare, from Hamlet: “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” To me, this so beautifully sums up the path of spiritual inquiry, which tends to reveal more layers, possibilities and connections, the further we travel along. The quote also reminds me of my own response to people who share their stories with me, as I marvel at the breadth of their experiences. For example, Queensland educator and single mum of two Tegan Vandenberg, my guest recently on The Ghost Files podcast, can communicate with the dead, has dreams and visions of the future, and remembers her past lives. Last year, a crisis prompted her to finally act on a long-held desire to find out whether she’s lived once before. Under hypnosis, Tegan, who’s long had an affinity with medieval times, relived in startling detail

“the feelings and texture” of four past lives. Among them, she remembered being Mairead, a lonely cook who died in a Scottish castle in the 1400s, and Laura, a servant who starved to death in the US Midwest. Under hypnosis, Tegan revealed that these former lives were part of six in the same theme: loneliness. True to her word, the day after the regression she remembered another life, and a reiki session later revealed the sixth – a man trudging slowly, solo, through the desert. With the remembrance of the final life in this cluster, healing ensued. “I was in a place where I was ready to shed the cloak of being and feeling alone,” Tegan reflects. “I’ve been allowed to see these previous lifetimes so that I can heal and let go of the past hurts they have felt and journey to experience pure love.”

decade has passed since Destination Flavour host Adam Liaw took home the crown on MasterChef Australia. For the 41-year-old Malaysiaborn lawyer turned chef, life is now centred around food, travel and his gorgeous family – wife, Asami, and their children Christopher, 6, Anna, 4, and Benji, 6 months. And he competes against other stars in the SBS series Celebrity Mastermind. The much-loved presenter shares his life in 10 pictures.

PRETTY WOMAN

TURNS 30

W

hen Julia Roberts was first cast in the 1990 film Pretty Woman, the script looked very different to what it would eventually become – an unlikely love story between Vivian Ward, a prostitute with a heart of gold, and Edward Lewis, a wealthy, high-profile businessman. Set in Los Angeles, the original concept went by the name of ‘3000’, referring to Vivian’s asking price for a week at Edward’s (Richard Gere) beck and call. It was a dark, cautionary tale that resulted in Vivian being dumped and abandoned on the streets of Hollywood. That was until famed

director and fan of happy endings, Garry Marshall, took charge and transformed Pretty Woman into the ultimate Cinderella story that audiences still love and celebrate 30 years on from its release.

ETERNAL ROMANCE Within five months of Pretty Woman debuting in the US, the film became the highestgrossing movie in Walt Disney Studio’s history. From Vivian’s Rodeo Drive shopping spree to her “slippery little suckers” moment with a tray full of escargot – Pretty Woman left viewers with a feelgood sensation that helped propel its lead actors into superstardom and usher in a decade of rom-com fever.

HOLLYWOOD’S DARLING Besides smashing the global box office and taking in $671m worldwide, Pretty Woman helped pave the way for Julia to become the world’s highest-paid actress. “They say I can open movies, and that’s nice in that it puts it into people’s minds that women can do it,” she told The Observer in 1994. “It’s not just Kevin Costner, not just Arnold Schwarzenegger. Not just guys.” Having filmed Pretty Woman when she was just 21, Julia was only starting to make a name for herself in Hollywood. In 1989, she received a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role in Steel Magnolias, which was promptly followed by a best actress Oscar nomination in 1990 for her role as Vivian in Pretty Woman.

These accolades led to a seemingly never-ending run of successful roles and films for Julia, including The Pelican Brief, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Notting Hill and Erin Brockovich, for which she finally won a best actress Oscar. While Julia can thank Pretty Woman for much of her early success, her big break almost didn’t happen. A number of A-list actresses auditioned for the role of Vivian, including Molly Ringwald, Michelle Pfeiffer and Meg Ryan. During an online Q & A in 2012, Molly admitted there was no-one better to play the part than her redheaded counterpart. “Julia Roberts is what makes that movie. It was her part,” she said. “Every actor

hopes for a part that lets them shine like that.” UNDER THE COVERS Julia and co-star Richard’s undeniable chemistry wasn’t just restricted to their on-screen antics. Life behind the scenes was just as sweet for the two actors. “We loved each other immediately so it was a nice thing,” Richard told US show Today in 2015. The two got along so well, in fact, that Richard would often play pranks on Julia. One of these would become the movie’s most iconic moment. Edward’s infamous snap of the jewellery box onto Vivian’s hand wasn’t actually scripted. Richard and Garry had planned the moment as a

surprise for Julia, who was celebrating her 21st birthday on set that day. Her entire reaction was genuine, and they decided to keep the candid moment in the film. During an interview for the film’s 25th anniversary, Garry let slip that another iconic part of the film’s history was also a spur of the moment decision – Vivian’s famous red jacket. “It was the only piece of wardrobe that was not original,” he told Today. “We were shooting on the street on Hollywood Boulevard and we saw a kid and I said, ‘See if you can buy her jacket!’.” By Alana Wulff

Tom Cruise was a big box office drawcard, starring with Nicole Kidman in Days of Thunder and in the war film, Born On the Fourth of July. On the box, Neil Patrick Harris starred as a teenage doctor in Doogie Howser, M.D., and Candice Bergen played an investigative journalist in Murphy Brown.

HOME AND AWAY MON. TO THU. 7PM

Since she first moved in to Summer Bay 20 years ago, Leah Patterson has been at the heart of some of Home and Away’s most memorable storylines – everything from the deaths of her first two beloved husbands Vinnie (Ryan Kwanten) and Dan (Tim Campbell) to suffering a

brain aneurysm following a horror bus crash, and even giving birth as a surrogate mother to Sally’s (Kate Ritchie) daughter Pippa. However, none of Leah’s storylines have been more dramatic than the one currently unfolding on our screens. Certainly, for Leah’s hugely popular portrayer Ada Nicodemou, bringing the

latest episodes to life has been an unforgettable experience. “I’ve never been one of those actors who have felt like I have to stay in a character, but I did when I was filming these scenes – just to get into the places I had to get to,” says Ada. “It was quite scary and exhausting. We will absolutely see Leah in a completely different light.”

T

he Summer Bay folk may be preparing to wave an emotional goodbye to another of their own – popular young resident Willow (Sarah Roberts). But let’s just say that they would be wise to put any plans for a farewell party on hold! For Willow, who recently announced she will soon be moving to Queensland with her emergency doctor girlfriend Alex (Zoë Ventoura), may not be quite as ready for the interstate move as she had thought. In this week’s episodes, Alex takes Willow by surprise when she suggests that they buy a house together in Queensland. As Willow struggles to keep her feelings in check, we see that this latest proposal has left her more than a little rattled. “I think that Willow is starting to think that she is the one having to make all of the changes in her life,” says Sarah. “She may also be starting to feel a little bit resentful that Alex is the one putting her career first. “She would love it if Alex could get a job closer to the Bay or that, if they do move to Queensland, it would not be forever.”

Can Willow leave behind the Bay for Alex?

Feeling panicked, Willow later confesses to Alex that she was thrown by her girlfriend’s life-changing suggestion. As for Alex, she can’t fathom why Willow isn’t embracing what she viewed as the logical next step in their relationship. “This is the first time that there is a bit of tension between them,” says Sarah. Indeed, before long, an argument has erupted between the pair, with Willow dropping a bombshell of her own on a stunned Alex. She is not sure that she is ready to settle down! Deeply wounded by Willow’s unexpected admission, Alex walks out. Later that

This time, Willow assures Alex that she wants nothing more than to be with her. “Willow absolutely loves Alex,” says Sarah. “There is no questioning that.” But it seems as though Willow’s heartfelt declaration may now be falling on deaf ears. What does Alex say to Willow that changes everything?

ROBBO’S GIFT

Taken aback when she learnt that her late husband Robbo (Jake Ryan) had left the gym to her, Jasmine (Sam Frost) now faces an important decision. Should the grieving widow – completely overwhelmed by the pain of losing the true love of her life – sell the gym in an attempt to begin to move forward with her own life? Or should she honour her husband’s wishes to take over the running of the gym – and face daily reminders of the life her beloved Robbo lived? “Jasmine does feel torn,” says Sam. “But she knows that every time Robbo was going through a difficult time, the gym was his happy place – his sanctuary where he could be himself.

“Keeping Robbo’s memory alive is so important to Jasmine, but everything is just so painful for her. “I don’t know how Jasmine is going to get through this terrible time,” continues Sam. “She is a person who puts her entire heart and soul into absolutely everything she does.” Meanwhile, with Tori’s (Penny McNamee) maternity leave soon coming to an end, Marilyn (Emily Symons) offers to quit her job at the Diner so that she can look after baby Grace during Tori’s shifts. But is Marilyn, who was deeply traumatised by what she witnessed during the horrific hospital siege, ready to care for Grace?

It’s set in 1929 in British Palestine. Miss Fisher becomes embroiled in a new mystery after she helps a young girl who was imprisoned for taking action against the British colonisers. After breaking her out of jail, Phryne uncovers a complicated web of intrigue involving a massive emerald and an ancient curse.

Filming took place in Morocco and Melbourne. Although set in Jerusalem and its surrounds, filming took place in nearby Morocco (for the Middle East portions of the story) and Melbourne (for the London-based scenes). Much greater in scale than anything we’ve seen in the TV series, the film features sweeping deserts, camel rides and a scene in which Phryne lands a plane.

It’s a brand new story. The Crypt of Tears is not based on any of the Miss Fisher books by Kerry Greenwood, but is a completely new

Miss Fisher’s adventures take her to the Middle East.

Miss Fisher’s outfits are on point. Phryne has about 15 different looks throughout the film, and they are as stylish as ever, even when she’s jumping onto the top of a moving train or stealing a motorbike. Many of your favourite characters are back. Joining Miss Fisher are Detective Inspector Jack Robinson (Nathan Page) and series regulars Prudence (Miriam Margolyes), Dot (Ashleigh Cummings) and Hugh (Hugo Johnstone-Burt).

How did you get into dog styling? My mum had a dog salon when I was younger, and I used to help out. But I never wanted to be a dog groomer originally; it wasn’t until I tried it, then I loved it!

‘I DIDN’T WANT TO BE A DOG STYLIST’

Were you nervous about working alongside Hollywood actress Rebel Wilson on the show? No, she was so down to earth and lovely. She actually took me out on her boat one day, and we saw the zoo and the Opera House and the bridge. I would love to bring my husband and my son to Australia [if we do another season] as they have never been.

Amber loved working alongside Rebel and Colin.

What about your fellow judge, Colin Taylor – did you get along? It was like we were brother and sister. We got on like brother and sister, we teased each other like brother and sister, and we fought over our opinions like brother and sister. Usually, he would eventually admit that I was right [Laughs]. We had such a great time filming the show.

BREAKDOWN J.LO’S HOT BIKINI PIC J.Lo certainly rocks a bikini.

She may be 50 but J.Lo is certainly rocking her body! Sharing a picture of herself in a tiny white bikini, the singer showed off her amazing abs and svelte physique to her fans. Kourtney Kardashian had only one word to say in the comments: “Damn.” J.Lo keeps her body looking youthful with a strict diet, no alcohol and lots of dancing! “Dance has always been a huge part of my life and taking the time to move my body and do something that’s so good for me is key to my happiness. And I really believe that when you take care of yourself and work to stay healthy, you’re better able to take care of those you love. So working out is definitely a priority for me,” she says.

dele was pictured screaming at photographers when leaving a wedding party. As she made her way into the car, the singer was seen shouting and yelling before covering her face with flowers. Earlier in the evening she was heard performing along with Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine.

IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR! Victoria Beckham’s gang Romeo, Cruz, David and Harper Beckham were out in force to support her show at London Fashion Week. The outing comes after Victoria admitted her children are often harshly judged. “You know, I think that

we’re a really close family. And I think the children sometimes get judged, for things they might like or they might post, and they don’t know, they’re children … but people are watching everything that they do,” she told CNBC.

Nicole was spotted looking stressed on the set of her new film.

NICOLE’S

It appears Adele is under pressure at present, and the outburst comes after she was recently pictured having a tense conversation on the phone. The star has also lost an incredible amount of weight, halving her dress size thanks to a strict diet of green juice and 1000 calories a day, and a vigorous exercise routine.

BODY DOUBLE KILLED

Nicole Kidman’s stunt double Cheryl Sanders has been shot dead alongside her husband after they tried to ambush her ex-husband Lindsey Duncan and his new wife Molly at their home. “All of a sudden, hell began,” Lindsey told a press conference of the “absolute, total ambush” that happened in his home resulting in a shootout. “The most difficult of this whole process – besides listening to my wife say, ‘I’m going to die, they’re going to kill me’ – is having to tell my two daughters that their mother’s been shot,” he said of the girls he shares with Cheryl. The news comes after Nicole was spotted looking stressed on the set of her new movie The Prom. The actress looked deep in thought as she made her way onto the set, possibly with the news of Cheryl’s death in mind.

LOVE ISLAND’S CURSE

The family were out to celebrate Victoria’s show.

In less than two years, three people from Love Island have taken their lives. Last week host Caroline Flack was found dead in her London apartment aged 40. In 2018, former contestant Sophie Gradon, 32, died at her parent’s home. She had appeared on the show in 2016. She was discovered by her boyfriend Aaron Armstrong who then took his own life 20 days later. In March 2019, another Love Island contestant, Mike Thalassitis, also took his life. He was 26. Friend Mario Falcone said Mike went “from being a normal guy, to a celebrity, to a ‘guy that was on that show’ – within the space of six months to a year. That’s a lot to deal with.” “Love Island have got to open their eyes to this,” he added. If you need support, help is available from Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Contestants Sophie and Mike also tragically passed away.
