Graham Moore has kindly corrected us on our June 1XX feature. He says the photo in the top right was actually taken in 1981 when they celebrated the station’s 10th anniversary – “I’m the one who looks like a startled possum caught in the headlights!” he says! Thanks, Graham! We can expect July to be a cold month, so wrap up warm and enjoy your magazine! I always love to hear what you think so drop me an email!

Dining out We rate Whakatane’s eateries We are blessed with so many options in our town, so that whether you are looking for breakfast, brunch, lunch, a snack, a cup of tea or dinner, you are bound to be spoilt for choice. Look Magazine sent out a couple of its journalists to try dining at different establishments, and we rated them on service, food and atmosphere (location, additional facilities etc). This is what we found.

personality and friendliness. The atmosphere is great for everyone – the café seated area has a gorgeous décor reminding you to take time out – and is popular with young families, the elderly, and professionals on their lunch breaks. The pies are sensational and the sandwiches great. The chocolate slice was a hit but the muffins and cakes tend to lack the homemade taste. Special mention for the hot chocolates with marshmallows.

Look Magazine says: Perfect for grabbing something on the run or stopping to meet a friend on a busy lunch break.

GRANDAD’S - Takeaway dinner

something for everyone. We decided to be adventurous and try the Thai. The sweet red curry that was recommended was sensational and different, with added sweetness of pineapple. The little starters are a hit with my other half. The quality and taste is simply delightful. The cost of the evening is a wonderful surprise – everything is really reasonably priced, yet nothing was scrimped on – definitely a plus. The service was friendly and quick. It’s a great restaurant for a date, a family celebration or a workplace get-together. We loved it.

Look Magazine says: You have to try Global Thai – it’s delicious and reasonably priced, and you can get picked up in the tuk tuk.

Nestled on the Strand in Whakatane is Grandad’s Nautical Nosh, a takeaway bar that is the best of its kind in the Eastern Bay, if local word of mouth is anything to go by. Grandad’s has a cheery, bright interior and friendly staff instantly on hand to serve. The menu features a good range of burgers, as well as toasted sandwiches, squid rings, doughnuts and other standard takeaway goodies.

JAVAMAN – Breakfast A Sunday morning breakfast at Javaman was a joy. Tucked in along the Strand with both indoor and outdoor seating, Javaman has a full cabinet and a menu board with an amazing array of options. Everything is reasonably priced and, with a great range of coffee and tea, there is something for everyone.

It’s a quiet weeknight and our food order comes quickly. The chips are the best I’ve had in a long time and the Hawaiian and chicken burgers filling and delicious, if a bit sloppily put together. But that’s how they should be.

Look Magazine says: Grandad’s is well worth a visit.

ROQUETTE – Dessert

Javaman has a chic but down-to-earth feel and the staff is friendly. Our food arrived quickly and we have to mention the mushrooms that accompany the traditional bacon and eggs. They were divine!! The toasted sandwiches and pita pockets were also yummy – thumbs up for tasty and wellpresented food!

Tucked down on Quay Street is a little treasure – Roquette. It has an air about it that is posh and city-like. We choose to try the dessert menu. The waitress service is efficient but not overly friendly or welcoming. However the kitchen service is outstanding – fast and the presentation is fabulous. The chocolate platter has a divine mousse, cake and gelato and is heavenly for the true chocoholic! The crème brulee is sensational. We watch the other diners’ mains go out and the smell is delicious. We’ll be back for dinner.

Javaman is child-friendly, with high chairs, toys and some brilliant fluffies.

Look Magazine says: Javaman is a great one-stop shop for coffee and cake, breakfast or lunch. Big ups for being family-friendly.

LADY ON THE ROCK – Coffee and cake The cabinet at New World’s Lady on the Rock café has great, simple café delights. You’ll find muffins, scones, cakes, sandwiches and pies here, along with an ever-changing array of treats including fruit salad, butter chicken and pizza. We found that service is generally very quick but lacks

The desserts are at the top-end of the price range but it’s a wonderful place to start your date before heading to the movies, or for a girly night out.

GLOBAL THAI – Dinner Everyone says, ‘you have to try Global Thai’ - so we did. The tuk tuk ride was a romantic start to the evening and Philip is very accommodating. The décor is gorgeous and gets you into the mood – it is just awesome sitting above the roundabout among the trees. There are two menus – European and Thai, so there really is

Look Magazine says: Roquette is a treat. Save up and splash out. The verdict: Whakatane really is spoilt for choice. Whether you need something quick and fast, or you’re celebrating something special, you will find an eatery that suits your budget and taste. We think service is variable, but the quality of the food is generally great.

Eating Out

Abraham Larsen looks at how the eating out scene has changed over the years in paradise Whakatane.

A

bout five years ago we would want to go out for dinner but there was only one decent place to go. We tried a lot of places but we always found that we would have the best experience at one particular place. However we’ve found that these days there are more than a few good places to eat out. But what I’ve found is that you need to find the right place for the right meal. For example, there are places that do amazing cooked breakfasts or brunches, but their dinner menu is uninspired. There are places that don’t open for breakfast but do lunch fit for credit card-wielding MP.

Wild At Heart

Mussels with cream cheese, Thai green curry, garlic and wrapped in filo pastry Wild Food with Phil Collings I wanted to do something different with mussels for my wife, something simple as it is easy to overpower the subtlety of seafood.

Place on a rack in a roasting dish with the folded ends underneath, ideally on a wire tray. Brush with melted butter.

The following recipe was an experiment but one of the nicest I have played with for a long time. The prep for this dish is time consuming and somewhat fiddly but the end result is well worth the effort!

Finely slice all the vegetables into long thin slices.

Ingredients Mussels – 6 per serving – shelled raw and remove the chewy bits (the beard etc).

The filling – about 5 teaspoons of spreadable cream

cheese per 6 mussel serving. Add ¼ teaspoon thai green curry paste and ¼ teaspoon minced garlic. This can be altered to suit your own taste.

The Pastry - Filo pastry and melted butter.

Add a small amount of salt and white pepper. (the white pepper adds a sweetness to the vegetables rather than a spice flavour). Toss together in a bowl with a little chilli powder if desired. Bring a pot of water to the boil for the noodles and cook. Put the tray of mussels into a pre-heated oven at 180 degrees C. Add the veges to a preheated pan or wok with 2 tablespoons of oil and toss for 3-5 minutes on a high heat. Reduce heat by half and add 150-200mls of cream and 2/3rds teaspoon of chilli powder (this can be varied to taste or missed out altogether). Bring the cream to a simmer but never let it boil.

carrots.

Vegetables - Stir fry – onion, mushroom, capsicum,

Place lid on pan and simmer while noodles and mussels finish cooking.

Noodles -Vermicelli noodles are ideal

When veges are cooked, remove from heat.

Fill each mussel with a teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture.

Turn the oven off when pastry is golden brown and leave in the oven to stay warm.

Lay out a full sheet of filo pastry on a large cutting board and brush with melted butter. Lay a second sheet of pastry over the first and brush with butter.

Strain the noodles and stir through a teaspoon of good quality oil. Stir the vegetables to distribute the sauce.

Cut the sheet of pastry into 6 equal squares and place a mussel into each piece of pastry. Roll the mussel in the pastry and then fold the ends over.

To serve spoon a base of noodles onto the plate, then add the stir fried vegetables and sauce on top. You can place the mussels decoratively on top of the veggies or to the side. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and thin strips of lemon zest.

SALE NOW ON! 25%-50% off*

Why has there been this shift? I could argue that it was brought about in part by one place that stood above the rest – so much so that the other places needed to lift their game. Maybe it is because we demanded a better dining experience than a snotty teenage waitress who really didn’t care that you’re spending your last $80 on treating yourself. In days of old you would pack the family in the car and take them to The Buccaneer. Us kids would get a Traffic Light drink and something deep-fried with chips. On a summer’s day, sour cream-smothered nachos outside the Why Not would be the order. But now you may find yourself in a similar predicament as my wife and I last weekend; Indian Aroma or New Hong Kong? Roquette or Toi-Toi? The Fig or Javaman? It was a pleasure to be so spoilt for choice. It used to be McDonalds or Freds Fish & Chips. For my money, there is nothing like a fried breakfast from The White House Cafe. Their poached eggs, fried bacon and hash browns on toast are not only heart attack central – they’re delicious, presented well and served in a child-friendly venue. Lunchtime I would suggest Vendor Café on weekdays. Corn Fritters with Bacon and Kiwifruit Chutney is the best $5.00 you could spend on lunch. Unfortunately they aren’t open on weekends. I’m partial to pop out to Javaman for a savoury scroll on a Saturday. We have tried a lot of places for dinner, none come close to Indian Aroma. Not only are they home to the best curry in Whakatane (try the Chicken Madras with Onion Baji), they also have the best view of the Whakatane River Bar. I say enjoy it while you can because once that monstrosity of an apartment block is built down there, you’ll need a swipe card and your name on the lease to sit in the same spot. At the end of the day, great food and great atmosphere doesn’t count for a thing if the service isn’t up to scratch. Even worse, a place that takes itself so seriously, that they feel like they’re doing you the favour by serving you. I’m not sure that’s how it works. When money is tight, or you have a couple of screaming kids – there’s always another great place to dine out. Grab some treats from the local supermarket, pack a blanket and park up we love Ohiwa Harbour. There’s nothing like serenity while the mighty sound of a 2-stroke engine goes past you at full tilt. It’s hard work living in paradise.

A Beer Success

Aotearoa Breweries in Kawerau is one of the Eastern Bay’s true business success stories, producing locally made beer. Justine Southwick meets head brewer Tammy Viitakangas to look back on the journey.

T

he company has been producing Mata beer since December 2005. It has gone from strength to strength, winning over the taste buds of New Zealanders and receiving various awards along the way, including at the Australian International Beer awards, which head brewer Tammy Viitakangas says is the second largest beer competition in the world. The brewery is very much Tammy’s baby. She learned about beer brewing in a paper while studying towards a Bachelor of Technology at Massey University. She was fascinated by the process, as was her partner and fellow student Jaysen Magan. They travelled overseas and, in Belgium, discovered beer that reflected the country’s traditional character. They decided there was a market in NZ for a beer with a distinct Kiwi taste. Back in Auckland, Tammy began experimenting with brewing. She spent two years learning the process and creating a business plan. She and Jaysen then approached her parents with the idea of a boutique brewery in Kawerau. She grew up in the town, and her parents still lived there at the time. “It makes total sense as a location, as it’s central and has easy access to tourist towns such as Rotorua,” Tammy says. “We have an excellent supply of water in the region, which is extremely important in brewing beer; water is the biggest ingredient. Kawerau also offers low overheads, and we are the only brewery in this region.” Her parents liked the idea and the following six months were

spent putting together an unused brewery they bought from Wellington. “It took six months to piece together the brewery, with many hours spent by my dad and uncle doing so,” Tammy says. “They did most of the manual work, putting cool rooms together and cleaning equipment while I provided instruction on how the whole thing needed to work and how it was to be laid out, as well as continuing to work on developing the beer.” Brewing began in October 2005, with the first batch of two Mata hand-crafted premium beers – including the flagship Manuka beer - completed five weeks later. An estimated month’s supply sold out in 10 days. Manuka beer remains the company’s biggest seller, Tammy says. “It is very smooth and clean tasting, with herbal notes from the addition of aromatic manuka honey.” The brewery now produces six flavours of beer. All are handcrafted and pure, with unique Kiwi flavours such as feijoa and the aforementioned manuka. Coming up with flavour ideas, Tammy says, is easy. “My passion is NZ so inspiration comes from here. The Mata Manuka was an easy choice, as manuka honey is such an iconic and internationally well-known product. “Feijoa is not well known internationally but I love them and they remind me of growing up. We also use horopito (a native bush pepper) in our latest beer. It has a wonderful peppery,

cardamom-like aroma, which is a fantastic addition to beer. “I love developing new beers. Waiting to see how they are going to turn out is exciting for me; the biggest reward is seeing people enjoy our beer,” Tammy says. “I always have lots of ideas in my head for new beers and have another festive NZ-themed beer I am going to release in the next couple of months.” Other products may also be introduced in the near future, so watch this space! Brewery tours are available by prior arrangement. There is also a shop at the brewery where people can sample the beer during opening hours. Mata beer is stocked in most New World supermarkets. It is also sold in restaurants, tourist outlets and bars, and has been exported to Japan for three years. • Mata Beer is served on-tap at Global Thai. Enjoy the fresh, locally made brews with your next meal, and make a booking with Global Thai on 07 308 9000

The House Katie Melua

The House, this year’s release from Katie Melua and her fourth album, is unforgettable for its adventurous lyrics and sound.

On this CD, which English record producer William Orbit came out of retirement to collaborate on, words such as ‘I’d love to kill you as you eat’ are a touch on the dark side but make the listener sit up and take notice, as does Katie’s acoustic guitar talent. The 25-year-old has a jazz sound; it’s easy to imagine her singing in a smoky room filled with people drinking red wine. Katie wrote or co-wrote all the songs on this album, with the exception of ‘The One I Love Is Gone’, which was penned by Bill Monroe. The songs are an appealing blend of ballads and cheerful ditties.

Katie’s singing is strong and melodic, making The House is a great album to chill out to. Fans won’t be disappointed...

While her voice and the songs themselves aren’t really to my taste, Katie’s singing is strong and melodic, making The House is a great album to chill out to. Fans won’t be disappointed. * 1XX has five copies of Katie Melua’s latest album The House to give away to Look readers. Email info@lookmagazine.co.nz with CD in the subject line, and answer this simple question: ‘What number album is ‘The House’ for Katie Melua?’

Intriguer Crowded House Intriguer is Crowded House’s sixth album, and its second album since drummer and co-founder Paul Hester committed suicide in 2005.

This is a full band effort that sticks with the Crowded House formula...

This is a full band effort that sticks with the Crowded House formula, although singersongwriter Neil Finn claims to have experimented with new sounds. Scattered female harmonies provide a bit of variety, such as in Isolation, which is a duet by Finn and wife Sharon. The album starts with a bang, in the form of the punchy Saturday Sun, and keeps the momentum up with the disco sound of Other Side of the World and slow guitar of Inside Out.

The album features just 10 songs including, in Archers Arrows, echoes of earlier efforts. Finn’s familiar sense of place remains, as evidenced in the wistful Amsterdam track that is guaranteed to resonate with fans. As will the entire album; this is up there with Crowded House’s best.

Need You Now Lady Antebellum This CD’s title track Need You Now preceded the album as a single release, reaching number one on the country charts and staying there for five weeks. So this album promised great things and doesn’t fail to deliver. Its tracks comprise soft-rock tunes featuring just enough steel guitar to keep it classified as country. This latest effort from singing and songwriting trio — lead vocalists Charles Kelly, and Hillary Scott with multi-instrumentalist and backing vocalist Dave Haywood — is nothing but memorable.

The band’s polished brand of contemporary country is consistent and flawless in its songwriting, production, and performance on this album...

Charles’ baritone is emotive and expressive, while Hillary has a unique form of phrasing makes her songs reach into the hearts of fans. The group party anthem on the album is littered with clichés but boasts an infectious chorus. The band’s polished brand of contemporary country is consistent and flawless in its songwriting, production, and performance on this album

Whakatane music scene A band to watch this year is Whakatane’s Tiger Hour, so named because founder Hani Totorewa was born in the year of the tiger. A roots/reggae band, Tiger Hour has performed twice in the Eastern Bay this year: at the Ohope Summer Concert and the Whakatane Street Fiesta. It has quickly gained in popularity and is currently recording an album. Visit www.tigerhour. com for more information. Whakatane has a thriving music scene and there is plenty coming up on the events calendar. July concerts include: • Three Houses Down (July 2 at the Commercial Hotel) • House of Shem (July 3 at The Boiler Room) • Violinist Josef Spacek and concert pianist Michael Houstoun (July 14 at the Church of St George and St John, Domain Rd • J Williams (July 17 at The Boiler Room) • Soldzas (July 29 at The Boiler Room). • Wellington-based jazz trio Hot Club Sandwich July 31, location to be confirmed). The Passage by Justin Cronin

Deep in the jungles of eastern Colombia, Professor Jonas Lear has finally found what he’s been searching for – and wishes to god he hadn’t. In a maximum security jail in Nevada, a convicted murderer called Giles Babcock has the same strange nightmare, over and over again, while he waits for a lethal injection. In the convent of the Sisters of Mercy, a six-year-old girl called Amy wonders why she’s been abandoned, not knowing that an FBI agent is desperately searching for her. In a remote community in the California mountains, a young man called Peter waits for his beloved Brother to return home – so he can kill him. Bound together in ways they cannot comprehend, for each of them a door is about to open into a future they could not have imagined. And an epic journey is about to begin. A journey that will take them through a world transformed by man’s darkest dreams, to the very heart of what it means to be human. And beyond. The Passage is one of the most thrilling and intriguing books I have read in a long time. Other people have said that it is like reading Stephen King on steroids. And that is just what I felt. The way that Justin introduces you to the characters is fantastic and you really get to know them and love them and want them to survive to tell the tale. And what a tale it is. Can’t wait for Justin the write more, loved it, didn’t want it to end. What happens to Amy and Peter or Sara and Hollis? I highly recommend this book.

Hunger Games By Susanne Collins This is a coming of age story with a twist. In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games. A fight to the death on live TV. When you turn twelve your name is entered once, At thirteen, twice. And so on until you reach the age of eighteen, the final year of eligibility, when you name is goes in the pool seven times. But there’s a catch if you were poor and starving you can opt to add your name more times in exchange for tesserae. Each tesserae is worth a meager years supply of grain and oil for one person. At the age of just sixteen Katniss Everdeen has her name entered twenty times. Katniss has been looking after her mother and younger sister, Prim, since her father died in the mines. This year her sister has her name in the pool once, what would the odds be that Prim’s name is called on the night of the Reaping. Katniss is a wonderfully strong young women who has looked after her family and now must leave them to fight for her life at the Hunger Games. In this brutal arena you find friendships and allies in the strangest of places. I found this book fascinating the girls will like the romance and the boys will like the blood and gore. Would recommend this for 12 years and up as it can be quite gory. But full of adventure and wonderful charcters.

Short second life of Bree Tanner By Stephanie Meyer Have to confess I have not read any of this authors books before. I must be about the only one but this novella is really quite good. Bree Tanner is a character in the book Eclipse written by the same Author. Bree is happy with her new life as a vampire but is very quiet and doesn’t mingle with the others in the coven until she is sent out to hunt and finds a friend in another vampire who is a little different to the others. As this is a novella it is only short only about 180 pages long but it kept me interested and in the end wanted to know more about this vampire epidemic that seems to be sweeping the book trade.

Goji Berry and Chicken Soup for colds and flu 2 tbsp dried echinacea root

2 large onions, peeled and sliced

200 ml water, freshly boiled

12 shiitake mushrooms,thinly sliced

5 tbsp goji berries, fresh or dried

10 cm root ginger, peeled and shredded

2 litres chicken stock (homemade or from stock cubes)

2 fresh medium-sized chillies, finely sliced

3 chicken thighs or drumsticks (preferably organic)

extra sliced ginger and chillis, to serve

8 garlic cloves,chopped

1. Combine the dried echinacea root with the water in a bowl to make a simple infusion. In another bowl, pour just enough cold water over the goji berries to cover, and leave to rehydrate. Set the echinacea and goji berries aside and leave to stand. 2. Place the stock and chicken pieces in a large pan or slow cooker. Add the sliced onions, mushrooms, ginger and chillies and place around the chicken in the pan. On a very low heat, simmer gently for 1 ½ -2 hours, or until the chicken is tender and falls apart. Take off the heat. 3. Five minutes before serving, add the goji berries and chopped garlic. Finally, strain the echinacea infusion and add this to the soup, reheating if necessary. 4. Serve by ladling into bowls and garnishing with sliced ginger and chilli for an extra kick.

Protein and Exercise Protein powders and bars shouldn’t be just in the realms of weightlifters and gym-bunnies. Anyone who is doing regular exercise whether walking with a group or a Zumba class a couple of times a week, your muscles will recover quicker with less pain if you have some kind of good protein preferably within half an hour of finishing. This doesn’t need to be in the form of a shake or a bar but can be anything from chicken and rice or tuna and eggs. I must admit that a high protein bar or a powder in a shaker just add water maybe more convenient when you’re in a hurry. My girls play hockey and had been complaining of sore muscles after training and games, but since they have been having half a bar before and half after each session their muscle recovery has been much better. Latest research states that women benefit from some protein intake prior to exercise and for men post exercise protein is preferable and extremely important.

Homeopathy Basic Dos and Don’ts Don’t expose your remedies to sunlight and strong smells, if they come in a box put them back in the box after each use. Also avoid using toothpastes and mouthwashes whilst taking your remedies as most of these will antidote them. Don’t touch the little tablets, just drop them in to the lid and straight into your mouth. Don’t eat or drink anything before or after taking remedies, this could interfere with the absorption. It’s best to wait at least 5, and as long as 30 minutes. Don’t keep taking a remedy if you don’t feel better. “When you take a remedy, you should first have a sense of well-being,” says Jody Shevins, ND. Then symptoms should start to go away. If you don’t get results after one or two doses, stop taking it. Do some research. Shevins recommends the Online Remedy Finder at abchomeopathy.com to help select a remedy that best fits your condition. Sign up for a homeopathy class, there are also some great books out there or pop into your local Health Shop and

discuss your problem with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Do consult a trained homeopath, especially for chronic conditions, or if you’re not getting results with self-prescribing.

McGregor is the name of a Scottish clan who demonstrated a resilience and determination to overcome adversity. Bruce McGregor seems to have inherited the same characteristics. His is a battle against disease. John Glasse meets a man who still remains positive. This enemy struck Bruce in 2005 and since then, in spite of continuing treatment, a virulent cancer has affected his throat, his face and tragically resulted in the loss of his right eye. For a man who during his sixty two years has led a full and physical life as well as currently raising two teenagers, this has been tough. Bruce is a country boy through and through, bought up on a farm in the Tolaga Bay coastal district. He was quick to learn the trade of stockman and at eighteen began his farming career as head shepherd on a 22,000 acre sheep station. It is often said that there is a book in everyone, Bruce’s book is chock full of interesting chapters. Droving large herds of cattle from the coast up through Waimana and on towards the Waikato was a common sight in the seventies. Bruce went mustering the larger stations for shearing in the spring and then tackled this monotonous job in the winter. He says you could get very tired of staring at the back sides of cattle and sleeping in the back of a truck for three months at a time. From there it was a jump up the ladder to farm management. He worked for Landcorp, on a hard eleven thousand acre dry-stock farm in Rangitaiki on the Taupo/ Napier road. Then came a big move to the UK where he became a fatstock buyer. He was based in Wales and it was there that his two children were born. Bruce considered the Welsh farming practices to be archaic; he bemoaned the lack of a good set of sheep handling yards. He tells the story of once having to pick out fat lambs inside an old unoccupied house. From Wales to Norfolk and something completely

different: planting vegetables for supermarkets Tescos and Sainsbury’s. The family headed back to NZ in 2004 and it was just a year later that Bruce received the news of his illness. For thirteen year old Rangi-ora, the attack against his father has been hard to take. But he and his dad still take their fly rods down to the river and spend some great fellowship together. Bruce admits to tiring on these trips but he says, ‘I’m a

Their regular visits and caring attitude is always part of the Hospice code’ stubborn bugger’; a fact that has seen him working in his garden and even collecting loads of firewood for the coming winter. His daughter, Lara (14) has coped with the difficult situation, helping around the house and making sure Dad is as comfortable as possible. No doubt about it, Bruce has had a rough time with chemo and radiotherapy, but through it all remains positive. Although he admits to thinking that Hospice was unnecessary; he now speaks very highly of the dedicated Whakatane team. Their regular visits and caring attitude is always part of the Hospice code but in one area they really shined. Transporting his two children eight kilometres to a scheduled bus stop has been impossible for Bruce. The bus

actually passes the end of their road but if his children caught it there, it would have incurred an eighty dollar per week charge. It appeared that no one would listen to reason. Hospice stepped into the breach, persuaded the relevant parties to rethink their rules and gained a victory. A day at a time is Bruce’s philosophy; he has not given up on his goals, more trout fishing, maybe a spot of deer hunting and a desire to focus on his hobby, photographing birds and animals in the wild. Hospice is part of a national organization that provides essential care and support for people and their families when living with a life-limiting illness. The services are provided free, with some support from the government and a lot of donations and fundraising from the community. Hospice Whakatane uses July as a major fundraiser and awareness month, beginning with a Pajama Party on 2 July to The Great Hospice Bed Race on the 31st July. The Bed Race is a hilarious event made up of teams of 5, where one is a ‘rider’ and four get to push. Each team has a name, costume and sets out to raise as much as possible for Hospice! Bring your own mattress, and be sure to raise money before the event to get extra points!! If heels is more your thing, sign up for the Logan Shoes Stiletto Stampede – a 100-yard dash in high heels!! Trout FishingPyatt m with Graha

Hello everyone! Well the rains have come and gone big time - leaving behind massive problems for many unfortunate people in the Bay area.

T

he rivers didn’t fare much better either

with two major floods, and with rivers remaining very high the fishing has been difficult to say the least. However the good news is that they are fishable but still high, so any wading needs to undertaken with great care. Many rivers will have had their winter limits put in place at the end of June, but this is no reason to put away your rods! There is still lots of fishing to be had below these limited areas, and often the fishing will be steady throughout the winter and into very early spring. The Rotorua lakes are producing some excellent fish with one of 13.7 lbs being the best one I have heard of. Generally the fishing in these lakes so far this winter has been better than last winter so all appears well for the remaining few months of winter. I want to comment on the degradation of the river running through the Nukuhou and the Cheddar valleys, due to the total removal of the willows from the banks of the river. I realise that this waterway is not trout water, but I have seen the destruction that similar tree clearing programmes have caused on some of our prime trout waters here in New Zealand, not to mention what must go through the landowners minds following every flood as acres of land normally protected by trees on the banks disappear. Back to river fishing - the Rangitikei upstream

Lack in name only by Tony Kirby I get such pleasure from writing these stories and hosting my radio sports show because I am dealing with endeavour and positivity.

T

he day I visited the Lack house was no exception. I was greeted by a freshfaced, smiling young man in his late teens. I had read of his wheelchair racing exploits, had spoken with him on air and met some of his family, but I had never met Matthew Lack, national and world champion wheelchair “boy racer”. The next hour was to be an education. As we were concluding a pleasant voyage of discovery I asked what he’d have done if he was able bodied. “I’d probably be inside,” he said, with a mischievous grin.

of Matahina dam is well worth a visit - it is fishing well at the moment and is very close to hand. As for myself I had a bit of success on the Waioeka at the end of June, which saved me from going completely insane through not having had a fish in the rivers for about a month!

But I have little doubt Opotiki’s people would have been aware of a more boisterous presence than they are now. This highly motivated achiever has set national wheelchair under-20 records in several short-and longdistance track and road events. These, along with senior titles in the 100m, 200m and 400m track races, and world titles in the under 20 800m, 1500m and 5000m track races, mean he is known worldwide. He has also won the NZ Maori disabled sportsperson of the year - twice. Matthew’s current aim is to qualify for the 2010 Commonwealth Para team and then the 2012 Olympics in London. One of the qualifying times has already been achieved. He is studying sport and recreation at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, part time to accommodate his racing. His town of Opotiki has adopted him as an unofficial mascot; for the past five years the Opotiki Golf Club has held an annual charity tournament to help him. Matt has also been supported by Paralympics NZ, Invacare NZ, Chesters Mt Maunganui and Lions club, Quota club, Adstrada Foundation. “I usually try to apply for funding for his main overseas event each year, so it can be different from year to year,” mother Paula says. “There is limited funding available for an individual athlete to apply for.” In return Matt has learned public speaking and is often invited to front a variety of audiences, something that he is at ease with and willing to do. Inevitably we got talking about general attitudes to someone in a wheelchair. Is he avoided, spoken down to or prevented from participating in normal activities? Yes to all, he says. But never does he think ‘poor me’. His philosophy is ‘why shouldn’t I?’ One day in Sydney unnoticed by the operator, he climbed the steps to the ferris wheelchair with support from a friend, enjoyed a ride and walked down the steps afterwards. Anything to prove a point. What of bullying and derogatory comments? There has been some, he says. “But I ignore it at first, warn the second time and act if it persists.” On the odd occasion he has used his exceptional upper body strength to make his point and the problem has been resolved. But in the main, people are accepting and helpful, Matt says. What next, after the polytechnic course? This is undecided but a personal trainer is fairly high on the list, as is another idea from left field. My lips are sealed, but watch this space, as the idea is perfectly rational and typical of a young man who works hard for success. Doesn’t New Zealand need more of these young people?

2010 Ford Fiesta ECOnetic Review CLEVER MOVE FORD NEW ZEALAND...

When it arrives in September this will be New Zealands most fuel-efficient car - the Fiesta ECOnetic. Ford’s Fiesta ECOnetic simply relies on a super-efficient diesel engine, a unique transmission with tweaked final-drive ratios, low rolling-resistance tyres and a bit of fiddling with the ride height and basic aerodynamics to take the bacon. In fuel efficiency, with an official fuel economy rating of 3.7 l/100km, the Fiesta diesel is a mile ahead of the much larger Camry Hybrid. It also pips the Prius at the post. So, who needs the technical complexities of tandem drive and a battery pack when a simple but very clever oil-burner can whip ‘em? The consumption of the Fiesta ECOnetic, with urban cycle fuel consumption of 4.6 l/100km and a highway cycle figure of a mind-bending 3.2 l/100km, is little short of astonishing. But perhaps more surprising is the way it performs. More to the point, here is your car if you simply don’t like fuel bills but want a small car that looks good and performs well.

Styling Externally, the ECOnetic shares its styling with the rest of the Fiesta range. That, of course, is a good thing. The dynamic and modern lines of the WS Fiesta give it real verve and personality. In our view, for aesthetics, it is the segment leader and a high point in modern Ford design.

Mechanical Package The ECOnetic is powered by a 1.6 litre Duratorq TDCi common rail diesel engine producing maximum power of 66kW at 4000 rpm and peak torque of 200Nm at just 1750 rpm. It is specially calibrated for maximum fuel efficiency and features a coated particulate filter to keep emissions low. Manual only at present, it comes with a nicely-weighted five-speed with a tall

fourth and a very tall fifth. (There is no automatic currently available, but inside word suggests that a twin-clutch version - similar to the slick Focus PowerShift - will arrive in this market next year.)

Though it can be rowed along and snapped through the five-speed transmission, the real story is in its remarkable consumption figures. When on the road, either on city streets or the highway, it seems to use no fuel.

This has not affected its comfort nor on-road performance. If anything, it seems to have improved it. Though lower, the ECOnetic hasn’t lost the initial compliance of the petrol-engined models, giving a quite surprisingly good ride over broken surfaces (without noisy jarring and pitching) and firming progressively for handling response.

Even after nearly four hours of driving, it was still showing more than 900km to empty. Anyone can save money driving this car. Most could at least halve their fuel bills.

There is nothing sophisticated about it - McPherson strut front suspension with twin-tube shocks and torsion bar rear with monotube shocks – but, as we have commented in earlier reviews, it is hard to find fault with the way the chassis, damping and steering works.

The drive Ford’s experience with diesel engines shows in the understressed triumph of engineering under the bonnet. This is a seriously capable unit. It goes about things with a nice rounded diesel humm, and even when lugging at low speeds in higher gears, diesel clatter is barely perceptible and will pass by most drivers completely unnoticed. Because it feels so incredibly robust (with the low-down torque of a tractor), it completely changes the character of the Fiesta without losing the good bits. It feels less like a small car; it can be driven lazily and effortlessly simply by letting the torque of the engine haul things around. The handling at the wheel hasn’t changed though. It is just as sharp as its class-leading 1.6 litre petrol-engined siblings; it tracks with the same accuracy and with the same go-kart balance and agility, and is at least as much fun to drive.

Importantly, they will also enjoy the experience at the wheel while they’re doing it.

The verdict If you were to think that the Fiesta ECOnetic was all about its astonishing fuel efficiency, and nothing else, you would be mistaken. It’s a Fiesta, and it drives like one. That means superb balance, brilliant underpinnings, precision at the wheel, and willing performance. For its purchase price, $30,990 plus on road costs, internal space efficiency (its interior dimensions are not far shy of the Prius), its running costs and inherently simpler engineering, the ECOnetic is a hybrid crusher. We haven’t seen any pricing scales for all-electric vehicles (EVs), but chances are it’s an EV crusher too. The ECOnetic, New Zealand’s most fuel-efficient car, is a landmark achievement for Ford. In being priced squarely for the average buyer, it is perhaps the most important release of the year.

Waterlogged Some Whakatane residents kept their sense of humour during last month’s flooding, advertising free mud wrestling outside their home at the worst-hit end of Douglas St. Justine Southwick looks at the heavier side of the deluge.

W

ith around 70 houses evacuated and countless others affected, the flood - described as a once-ina-century event - was no laughing matter. The Eastern Bay received more than 100mm of rain in two hours. In the resulting floods, waterlogged cars were abandoned on streets, houses and businesses were damaged and several areas cut off. Residents in Kopeopeo were among those badly affected. One woman, who did not wish to be named, says the event was emotionally scary. “My husband left our house at 6pm to pick up our daughter, a 15-minute return trip. At 7pm they were not home so I began calling friends and family to see where they were. It was extremely nerve wracking. They eventually got home at 7.30pm; he was towing waterlogged vehicles home.” Her husband is a builder, and his power tools and other equipment were ruined by the silt and water. His work vehicle was waterlogged and needs work. The cost of the damages, they estimate, was more than $30,000. “Our two garages and sleep-out were a foot under water. The sleepout needs re-gibbing, (and) new carpets, furniture and kitchen and bathroom fixtures have to be replaced. “The contents and house insurance covers the buildings and furnishings, but not the loss of income and emotional stress.” This stress was widely felt, with others in the Kope area also badly affected. The woman says the Allandale Court pensioner flats were completely flooded, with the residents being very distressed and losing all their furnishings. “They were evacuated and their units locked up. Clearing out their sodden possessions was not done for 2-3 days. In that time their possessions would have been damaged even more. Kope township had flooding, with First National Real Estate underwater for the second time in a week. Alexander

Ave businesses were deluged again for the second time.” Emergency service workers, Whakatane District Council staff and residents spent several days cleaning up following the flood, but residents say the council could have taken steps to ensure it didn’t happen at all. “Turn on the pumps for a start. A member of the public had to use bolt cutters on the James Street pump to open it and turn it on, but it was too late. Increase the volume of water able to get to the pumps, as they are capable of pumping more then what is getting to them - I have heard this from engineers, electricians and drainage staff. “They should have cleared the trees and debris from the streams present from the previous flood before the heavy rain warning. A large tree by the Baptist Church on King Street was still there until 10 days after the flood.” The rain also caused flooding in Edgecumbe, Matata and Opotiki, as well as slips around the region, and some local businesses stepped in to help victims. Computer company Gigabyte Solutions offered free back-up and recovery of waterlogged computers, while Performance Zone offered free motor vehicle checks for cars that were stuck in water. Co-owner Jane Harte says they looked at around 12 vehicles. “The majority of people had their cars towed with the AA. In a situation like we had it’s really important to give the vehicle a comprehensive check - up to the water line. A couple of examples are checking all the electrical plugs, air filter system and so on. “Apart from moving your vehicle to higher ground there is not a lot you can do to protect your car. My advice would be if your car has been in flood waters don’t attempt to start it. Call a garage and have them come and check it over first.” According to www.getthru.govt.nz, floods are a common hazard in New Zealand. Rescuers have to respond to the most

critical demands first, so you need to be prepared to cope on your own for up to three days. The website and Whakatane District Council advises people to: • Develop a household emergency plan and prepare an emergency survival kit so you can cope with being on your own for three days or more • Find out if your home or business is at risk from flooding. Your local council can give you information to help you reduce the effects. • Know where the closest high ground is and how to get there • Keep your insurance up to date • Listen to your local radio station for information and follow instructions from Civil Defence and emergency services

During a flood • Leave the flooded area and go to the nearest high ground • Lift household items as high above the floor as possible • Do not drive or walk through flood waters unless it is essential Whakatane District Council advises people to dial 111 if their houses are flooded or they need assistance. There is also information available at the back of the phone book and on the council’s website – www.whakatane.govt.nz.

After a flood •

If you have been affected, have your house inspected and the damage assessed.

Dear Aunt Maggie, My husband says that our two kids should be helping around the house. They are 8 & 10 yrs old. Maybe I’ve been too soft on them but he says he doesn’t want them growing into lazy teenagers. We have agreed to take notice of what you say. “Tired Mum” Dear Tired Mum, By your nom-de-plume, he’s right! All children should help both in and outside the house, and should be encouraged from a young age. Even the “terrible twos” can pick up their toys and put their clean clothes away. The first thing school age children should do is empty their bags and rinse out their drink bottle (at least you’re guaranteed to get the notes from school!). At 8 & 10, whether boys or girls, they should be making their beds, hanging out and getting in washing, vacuuming, learning to cook. The list is endless. If they’re smart enough to play on computers, they’re smart enough to do housework. Make a list of jobs they can both do and swap them around so they have a change. If they have a friend over, suggest the friend helps too - nothing makes a visiting child feel more at home. If they balk - turn off TV/computer. Work with them, show them how to do things. DON’T FORGET TO PRAISE THEM. You’ll all feel better with a routine. Explain how much more time you can have to go places if everyone pitches in. Also make them do it if they want a friend over - there’s nothing like a bit of bribery.....

Doll-making

The art of doll-making is another rewarding and addictive craft, and perfect for keeping busy on cold winter evenings! We learn more about reborn dolls and Jill Maas doll-making. There are many different kinds of doll making, from porcelain dolls, fabric dolls, reborn dolls and reproduction dolls and everything in between. They may be knitted, sewn, or have plastic limbs. The world of doll making and doll collecting is growing, in New Zealand there is a Doll Federation (www. dollfederation.co.nz) and more than 8 doll shows and festivals each year! If you search ‘reborn’ on Trade Me, you’ll get more than 20 listings with photos of what appear to be newborn babies. The resemblance is amazing, down to wrinkly little hands, soft lashes and small tufts of downy hair. These are ‘reborn’ dolls, life-like and life-size finished craft creations.

She’s like your chicken soup for life, she’s not a cure - but it’s a start...

Some makers enjoy the process of creating and then sell their works of art, while others don’t enjoy making the dolls but adore collecting. At this end, the finished dolls sell from $200+.

IS LIFE A BIT ROUGH? Worries about your relationship? Work mates upsetting you? Children misbehaving.

The crafters take pride in their creations, dressing and naming the dolls and setting them up complete with blankets, birth certificates, shoes and teddy. Avid makers may display their creations in second-hand bassinets and carseats, making the realism amazing.

For advice on your family problem, write to Aunt Maggie. Use a nom-de-plume, senders details are absolutely confidential.

Email Aunt Maggie at maggie@lookmagazine.co.nz

The kits cost between $50 - $160 for vinyl limbs, soft body and accessories. This is known as ‘newborning’, where the doll is created from scratch. Experienced reborn doll-makers sometimes choose to collect used toys dolls and undertake the process of reborning, where the factory paint is removed and the doll is recreated.

Jill Maas has always had a passion to make ‘stuff ’ mainly using fabrics and textiles. It is a skill inherited from her mum who was a brilliant craft person too. Jill forayed into doll making and started teaching after being encouraged by friends who wanted to learn how to make them too. “As with anything, you learn by practice, study, setting goals and challenges and continually producing new designs.” She started her own business, ‘Slightly Weathered Ladies’, which she says “means just that, slightly weathered but not down trodden. I’ve chosen to make mainly ‘character designs’ to evoke humor, that are fun to make and people can relate too.” Jill has been teaching throughout New Zealand and Australia for about 10 years and loves her job. “I love my job, the people I meet, the friends I’ve made and being able to share my skills with fun like minded people.” You can buy kits to make up Jill Maas dolls or buy the dolls themselves, and there are many stocked at Pins to Patches in Whakatane. Shop owner Daphne Green says the dolls are popular because they aren’t difficult to make and you don’t have to be a precise sewer, as this gives the doll character. She is taking expressions of interest for a class with Jill herself, so pop in to see the dolls and put your name down! The patterns are reasonably priced, making this hobby not too expensive to try. With the most amazing array of fabrics in Pins to Patches, you are guaranteed to find some treasures to make your doll as unique and fun as you!!

lookpolitics Encouraging others to stand by Judy Turner

L

ast month I attended the public meeting organised by Ida Rose at the Little Theatre. The place was packed which in my mind reflected two things. Firstly, the level of concern regarding current Council outcomes and secondly, the increasing level of respect for Ida herself and the tenacious way she has kept an eye on Council business for years. I left the meeting very encouraged by the positive suggestions that came from both invited speakers and from the floor of the meeting. Gail Lucas, a local retailer with a business located in Whakatane’s CBD spoke first, about her frustration with decisions the Council had made in recent years that undermined the businesses located in the CBD. The second speaker was Brian Phipps a local property valuer. Brian has given a lot of thought to the problems facing our District and suggested that increasing the number of rate-payers was the most sensible way of increasing Council revenue without increasing the rate charges themselves. By his reckoning, the recent Council growth targets are too conservative and the timeframes Council have set for growth is too broad. To those who want Whakatane to stay as it is and who hate the thought of our District population growing, Brian had a clear message.... “then be prepared for on-going, hefty, rate increases”. The next three speakers focused largely on the nuts and bolts of Council work. They talked about prioritising spending on core services, about better financial management, and about developing sound policy around the setting of rates. Two of these speakers had themselves been District Councillors in the past. In general they agreed that current Council structure meant that elected Councillors had far too much expected of them. Wayne Checkley called for the return of Council Standing Committees that allowed Councillors to focus on specific portfolios rather than trying to keep abreast with all Council business.

Property Report

D

espite pending tax changes and the expected rise in the Reserve Bank official cash rate, there was no real reduction in residential property prices or the number of sales in May, according to figures released on June 15 by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ).

Liz Williams, of Ohope Beach Realty, says the Eastern Bay market is interesting this winter. “Well-priced and well-presented properties are selling, even though this is a slower market. We have contracts written that are going though the due diligence process and this is also taking time, as buyers are taking their time.

In May, the median price for a house in the Eastern Bay was $228,500, down from $308,000 in April and $295,000 in May 2009. There were 38 houses residential properties sold, down from 48 in April and 61 in May 2009.

“Properties are in short supply and vendors always seem to think of selling in summer. However the winter can be a great time to sell, as your home is not competing with many other homes. Logical when you think about it. And we are short of good solid homes to sell,” she says.

But the national median for May was still 3.7 per cent up on that of May 2009, so there hasn’t been a significant fall in property values, REINZ president Peter McDonald said in the June report.

The total value of residential sales, including sections, in New Zealand in May was $2.27 billion; up from $2.24 billion in April. The breakdown of the values of the properties was 195 for $1 million plus, 601 for $600,000-$999,999; 1311 for $400,000-$599,999 and 3099 under $400,000.

“With tax changes and interest rates now settled, property investors are already talking about returning to the market, to cater for the growing demand for domestic rentals. It is good to see the market retain its strength and prices stay stable during a period when some buyers would have been concerned about potential tax and interest rate changes.”

While changes in the median price vary nationwide and there were drops in some regions, in 10 out of the 12 areas the increases in the median price ranged from 1-10 percent, when compared with the same month last year.

Nationwide, the median residential property price for May was $350,000, down from $356,000 in April. Sales of 5206 were only one down on the 5207 residential properties sold in April, even though winter is usually quiet.

“During the past year nearly 67,000 homes were sold for a total of almost $27.5 billion, so the real estate market is still very healthy,” Mr McDonald says.
