MP Miriam Cates reacts to reports she voted against NHS staff and other key workers from receiving regular coronavirus testing.

The MP for Stocksbridge and Penistone posted this statement on social media “I’m disappointed that misleading reporting of the Opposition Day debate on Wednesday is being used to suggest that the Government doesn’t support regular coronavirus testing for NHS staff and other key workers.

For the avoidance of doubt - I support the regular testing of NHS and social care staff, and have been consistent in this.

To be clear, Opposition Day motions do not change policy or the law, and even if this motion had passed, it would have had no effect at all on testing policy. It is factually wrong to say that passing this

motion would have changed the way testing is carried out.

Now is the time to come together to beat this virus; not to waste valuable time scoring party political points.

I did not vote against regular testing for NHS staff - I voted to continue with an evidenced based approach to keep staff and patients safe.�

Some 331 Tory MPs voted down a motion tabled by Labour which called for weekly testing of NHS staff in efforts to combat covid-19.

The result was 344 votes to 198, with the Conservatives and DUP forming the majority against it.

SPECULATIVE PLANNING APPLICATION TO BUILD 85 DWELLINGS ON PROTECTED GREEN FIELDS.

A Planning Application (17\04673/ OUT) was submitted by DLP on behalf of Hallam Land Management to Sheffield’s Local Planning Authority (LPA) in 2017 to build up to 93 dwellings. Since that time, the number of dwellings has been reduced to 85.

The local community is outraged that this application should be considered as the land in question is protected

by Sheffield City Council Planning Policies. In particular, the land is still safeguarded and protected under current and valid local Core Strategy policies (CS72 and G6A) and the National Policy and Planning Framework (NPPF) emphasises that local planning authorities have been given more powers than previously to protect land of local importance such as this site.

Hollin Busk is highly valued by the local community and it is a thoroughfare regularly used by walkers, pram pushers, wheelchair users, cyclists and schoolchildren. It has a wonderful outlook and is a green corridor that separate Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Bolsterstone and prevents an excessive urban sprawl. It is a visual amenity highly valued by the local

community. It is so highly valued that since 2017, 523 objections have been posted on Sheffield Council’s website and following an amended application a further 121 objections have been added. Dr Peter Morgan of Friends of Hollin Busk (FOHB) says “Local people are appalled that an application was ever entertained in the first place on this protected land.

It is an opportunistic application in an inappropriate location. We have the support of Stocksbridge Town Council, our MP Miriam Cates, the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, Bolsterstone Community Group and a significant proportion of the local population.”

In the words of a previous Secretary of State “The land at Hollin Busk is a large and integral part of the countryside south of Stocksbridge, prominent in local views and providing an important visual break between the settlements of Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Bolsterstone. Its rural character is greatly valued locally and there is no need to develop it, as new housing can be provided on previously developed brownfield sites within the urban area. Indeed, protection of this area makes a significant contribution to the character and distinctiveness of Stocksbridge.” A sentiment that

is supported by the current Sheffield City Council policy of maintaining green links and prioritising urban regeneration and the development of new houses on brownfield sites.

The detailed objections list a number of major issues, many of which relate to the unsustainability of the application. The proposed development would sit above Clough Dike and the local wildlife site of Fox Glen and sever any link with open countryside and the nearby Green Belt. There will be a significant influence on the water course through Fox Glen which is subject to flooding. The site location is up a very steep hill and over a mile from local shops and other amenities encouraging people to use their car rather than accessing these facilities by foot or by bike. Local public transport is limited and bus stops are not within easy walking distance.

The objectors’ case has been strengthened by the recent announcement from Sheffield Planning Department which reported that the Housing Land Supply figure exceeds the government target of 5.0 and now stands at 5.1 years. This eliminates the applicant’s argument that current local planning policy has limited weight because this target was not being met.

Local people recognise the need for new housing for young families and point to a significant contribution of around 1000 new homes being developed on old industrial land at Fox Valley, Station Road in Deepcar and Oughtibridge Valley as well as many smaller infill locations. The Upper Don Valley is already making a significant contribution to Sheffield’s new housing requirement. Local Stocksbridge Town and City Councillor Julie Grocutt comments “Sheffield City Council has rightly adopted a strategy of regeneration of unused brownfield sites for building houses across the city. We have a significant number of such sites in this area that local people would welcome new homes being built upon to regenerate our local community. It is not necessary, as has now been identified by the Housing Land Supply figure to build houses on the beautiful green open space. I have never seen such opposition to any building proposal as I have to this site. Local people are right to object to building in this location and I fully support their opposition.”

The local MP, Miriam Cates said “I feel strongly that the LPA should not be considering developments of this scale on protected sites such as Hollin

Busk without a Local Plan to ensure a coherent planning strategy.”

After a long period of over three years since the initial application it looks as if this planning proposal will be presented to the Planning and Highways Committee in the near future and it is provisionally planned for the 14th July meeting. However, because of the COVID19 pandemic, these meetings are currently being conducted online via Zoom. The local community is concerned and disappointed as they had planned to gather a large number of protesters outside the Town Hall as well as packing as many as allowed into the actual committee room. However, FOHB say that the voice of the local people will not be silenced and they will have to be more inventive in getting the message of the local community across prior to the meeting. Hence a publicity campaign to leave Planning Committee Members in no doubt of the depth of local feeling and opposition to this application. FOHB intend to request an increased number of local speakers at the Planning Committee Meeting.

Local News The Lowood Steering Group asking for Justice for John and Julie In the countdown to Saturday, when pubs and clubs across England will once again open their doors, supporters of the steward and his wife who were sacked from Deepcar's Lowood Club fear it will remain closed in a bid to prevent the couple winning their jobs back.

Several of 152nd Oughtibridge Brownies have accepted the challenge of climbing the equivalent height of Ben Nevis at home by joining Christian relief and development charity Tearfund’s The Climb challenge. This means they will be climbing 69 ascents of their stairs every day for 7 days, to reach the full height of Ben Nevis! Funds raised through sponsorship for ascending their home’s staircase will support Tearfund’s work to support people living in poverty facing the threat of coronavirus.

The Steering Group, made up of Lowood members, believes John and Julie have been sacked unfairly and without any right of appeal and an EGM would give all members a say in whether they should have lost their jobs....not just a handful of committee men.

A spokesman for the Steering Group said: “There are rumours doing the rounds that certain high-ranking committee members are claiming the club cannot open because John and Julie are still living on the premises. This is patently untrue as the club is separate from the living accommodation which they are still holding on to as we fight their cause.”

He added: “There can be no claims the club cannot re-open without a steward as it functions properly when the steward is ill or on holiday. If the doors stay locked it's because the committee can't face an EGM. It's too frightened of what its members will decide.”

Who inspired the Brownies to do ‘The Climb’ challenge?

During the May half term, their Brownie Young Leaders, Alice (18) and Esther (15) Pearson, climbed the height of Kilamanjaro at home and have raised £2555 so far. The Brownies followed their climb and cheered them on through their Brownie Whattsapp chat, sending them videos and messages of encouragement. At the following meeting, Alice and Esther challenged the Brownies to have a go at the Beginner's Climb. Brownies to 'climb' Ben Nevis for charity

The Lowood Steering Group, set up to fight for John and Julie Clayton to be re-instated, plans to call an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) at which it will be put to club members that the present committee stands down.

But to trigger that EGM there has to be a notice posted in the club two weeks before the meeting can be held. If the committee is not opening the doors the notice cannot be displayed and so an EGM cannot be held.

Are local shops going to see an increase in custom after the pandemic?

With most retailers being shut and supermarkets struggling to keep up with the demand for home deliveries, customers have been turning to local shops and suppliers instead. Some of these local businesses have set up delivery services for the first time and gained customers who didn’t use them or even know they existed before.

Many have turned to social media as an excellent way to reach out to their local market to promote their products and advertise their services.

Can local retailers continue to flourish after the pandemic?

What the pandemic has taught us is just how important we all are to each other. Local businesses have tapped into the sense of community that we’re all craving amid the anxiety and concern that the pandemic has created.

This needs to carry on when ‘normal life’ resumes if we want our local retailers to survive.

Small shops and businesses can maximise their chances of maintaining their new customer base by focusing on what large retailers can’t offer; a personal, human touch. Large companies’ data bases may remember your birthday or recommend products you may be interested in based on your last order, but this is impersonal and automated. Only small, local businesses can connect with their customers in a real way and build up genuine and beneficial relationships.

When the pandemic ends, small businesses need to look at how they can continue to offer more to meet the needs of their customers.

People like a personal service, but when life gets busy, convenience often overtakes these needs. Post lock-down, these businesses need to keep offering delivery services to those who need this convenience if they want to hold onto those customers.

New Warning for Coronavirus Holiday Scams UK Finance warns consumers to beware of Coronavirus holiday scams.

Consumers are being urged to be on the lookout for holiday scams including fake caravan and motorhome listings, refund offers and travel deals, as criminals take advantage of uncertainty around coronavirus travel restrictions and cancellations to target their victims and commit fraud.

These vehicles are advertised at attractive prices to tempt people into believing they’re getting a good deal, when in reality they simply don’t exist or don’t arrive once paid for.

We therefore researched how this could be done and discovered that Just Eat seems to be the website of choice for doing this. However, we also noticed that they are widely criticised online for creaming off more than 10% of the takeawayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s income (fake news?).

At first glance this might sound reasonable, what with credit card fees and the terminal equipment they install etc, but ultimately itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s local people who will have to subsidise this through higher prices. Then I found www. feedmeonline.co.uk which claims that it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t charge the takeaway for itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s service, but also works with the â&#x20AC;&#x153;FMO movementâ&#x20AC;? to help feed the Worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hungry people â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for details see the FAQs on their website. We try to support local businesses wherever possible and find it annoying when the big Corporate organisations like Just Eat start muscling in on the local economy. There are several local takeaways registered with Just Eat, but currently there is only one registered with feedmeonline (Rajasthan Spice - whose website points you to feedmeonline even though they also use Just Eat). This made me wonder why more havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t registered with them and if they even knew about it, so I thought Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d see if Look Local could help make them aware of it.

There may well be a catch which I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know about and they may have already considered and dismissed it, but I would have thought it would be worth the local takeaways investigating, not only for their own benefit, but for all their customers and some of the Worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hungry as well.

drops pounds for pounds A nurse from Stocksbridge teamed up with a colleague to raise over £1700 for a rare disease charity after taking on a sponsored slim during the coronavirus crisis.

Iain Armstrong and John Harrington, who work in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital’s Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit, beat their 26lb weight loss target to shed 31lb between them over the course of six weeks.

The challenge was inspired by the UK-wide 26.2 initiative, designed to support charities losing money due to the pandemic. Their fundraising total of £1736 will benefit the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA UK), a national charity based in Chapeltown.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) affects just 7000 people in the UK and is caused by the thickening and stiffening of the blood vessels supplying the lungs. The life-limiting condition has no cure but can be managed with specialist care.

The Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital is one of just six specialist PH treatment centres in England.

Stocksbridge man Iain is a nurse consultant within the unit and chair of the PHA UK. He said: “People living with PH are classed as clinically extremely vulnerable and have had their lives turned upside down by the coronavirus pandemic. John and I wanted to do something to raise money for the charity which sup-

ports them, take control of our own health during a very stressful time, and reinforce that we really are all in this together.”

Father-of-two John is the unit’s ward manager. He said: “Like so many charities, the PHA UK has suffered from a downturn in fundraising activity due to the pandemic, so I wanted to do my bit to help. Trying to diet whilst running a hospital ward during the Covid-19 crisis hasn’t always been easy, but I’m delighted with how much we have raised. Thank you to everyone who has supported our endeavours – we promise to try and keep the weight off now!”

Care Home covid-19 free Staff and residents at Belmont House Care & Nursing Home in Stocksbridge have been given a clean bill of health as tests for Coronavirus have been completed across all the group’s 32 care homes.

Testing of all residents and staff for both viral (current) and antibody (historical) infection of Covid-19 has been taking place over the last few weeks at the Sheffield Care & Nursing Homes.

“Our Care Homes have worked extremely hard to protect our residents against the threat of Covid-19. There have been some difficult times and we send our deepest condolences to families who have lost loved ones during the pandemic. Our staff teams have gone above

and beyond to keep people safe and well cared for and I’m delighted to report that following this testing, we have no positive cases at all in these homes currently.

Tigers hopeful for restart SHEFFIELD Tigers co-owner Damien Bates has revealed how one team change could be made ahead of any season restart.

“I’m not prepared to go into any further detail at this stage because it’s far from certain, but we may just need to do it.

But the Barnsley-based businessman has assured Owlerton fans triple world champion Nicki Pedersen remains firmly on board – if the UK quarantine rule is axed.

“We have a Plan B in place already but Nicki Pedersen (pictured) is still on board. Our manager Simon Stead has been in regular contact with the riders and Nicki is keen to get over.

Bates remains hopeful of a shortened Premiership season starting in August and insists everyone at the club is ready to go.

“It’s an ambition of the owners to see Nicki riding in Sheffield colours around Owlerton. We all worked hard to make it happen and we want to see it.

“We might need one team change, we’re discussing that now,” he said.

“There’s obstacles to overcome before we can get a season but the directors of the sport in this country are working hard along with the Speedway Control Bureau and Auto Cycle Union to try and make this happen.

“I’d like to thank our fans and sponsors at Sheffield for their loyalty and hope to see them all soon.

“After the government announcements regarding social distancing and the hospitality industry reopening we believe there is a strong case for outdoor action like speedway to restart.”

The first medal competition of the year on Thursday 25th June took place on one of the hottest days of the year with temperatures reaching over 30°C but the heat did not interrupt the current form of Andrew Finney (04). After a disappointing start to the round with bogeys at the first two holes Andrew recovered to finish with a net 65, winning the division 1 competition just ahead of Trevor Moseley (11) who also carded a net 65 , losing out to Andrew on the back nine. Third place was taken by another player in great form, Liam O’Sullivan (04) finishing with a net 68.

In the second division ( handicaps 15 and above) Brad Lawton (19) also scored a net 65 to beat the current club Captain Brian Montgomery (19) who had a net 66, finishing the round with a birdie on the last. Third place was taken by Martin Bradwell (18) with a net 71 after unfortunately finding trouble on the 9th hole taking 9 shots.

Saturday 27th June saw players competing for the first of the club trophies, the Whitbread Cup, in which players compete against the course on a matchplay basis.

A net birdie (or eagle or albatross) wins the hole, a net par halves the hole and anything worse loses the hole. The early morning players had to contend with the rain which eased as the day wore on but the wind was also a defining factor in the later rounds. This competition tends to favour the

higher handicap players as any strokes taken above a net par are discounted in the final score, and this certainly proved to be the case. The winner was Richard Moore (26) with a very impressive 6 up against the course. Matt Slater (28) with a score of 5 up took second place and Curt Newton ( 25) took third place also with 5 up losing on the back 9.

Curt Newton is obviously enjoying his game at the moment having now dropped 5 shots off his handicap in the last three weeks.

A total of 11 players managed to beat the course.

The Ladies trophy competition started on Sunday 28th June with the Buckley Bowl.

The winner of this medal competition with a net 69 was Terri Moffett. Bev Sykes was second with a net 71 and a better back nine than Lady Captain Helen Moffett who also scored a net 71 The trophy competitions continue next week with the Brian Langley trophy for Gents and the Albert Goodison trophy for juniors, both of which are a two day event played over the weekend. The ladies will compete on Sunday for the Cumberland Salver, a stableford points competition.

The clubhouse which has been closed during the lockdown will re open on Saturday 4th July for members only so members will be able to enjoy a drink after their round.
