Labour select Penistone and Stocksbridge candidate FRANCYNE Johnson has been selected as Labour’s candidate for the Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency to stand at the next general election. Members picked Francyne, a local mum with a background in youth and community work. She currently represents the Stocksbridge and Upper Don ward in the constituency as a councillor. Speaking after the selection, Francyne said: “The Tories are destroying the fabric of our society. The next general election is our last opportunity to rescue our NHS, tackle the climate crisis and to invest in our public services which have been ground down after a decade of austerity and privatisation. “I come from a working-class background and have worked in retail, catering and cleaning. I know what it’s like trying to raise a family on a low income. It’s so vital that we have more MPs with this experience - they are meant to represent us after all.
DEMENTIA PROVISION
STOCKSBRIDGE Community Care Group has announced that following a successful tender process, the contract for the Stocksbridge & Upper Don community’s dementia provision has been awarded to them from Sheffield City Council.
“People in Penistone and Stocksbridge have been let down badly by the Tories and the Lib Dems. The more rural areas like ours are really hit hard by the cuts. Only a Labour government will get the funding we need into our public transport, our schools and our NHS.” The current MP, Angela Smith, recently announced that she would not be contesting the seat and will instead be looking to secure the seat of seat of Altrincham and Sale West for the Liberal Democrats. The Liberal Democrats have already put forward Hannah Kitching, a councillor for Penistone West in Barnsley Council, as their candidate. The Conservative candidate for the seat is Miriam Cates, a former teacher who now runs a tech company with her husband and serves as a parish councillor for Oughtibridge. The Brexit Party’s candidate is John Booker and Richard Trotman will be standing for the Green Party.
POPULAR BONFIRE CANCELLED DUE TO SICK HORSE
The contract includes providing dementia-specific local information, advice and guidance, providing six-monthly courtesy calls to people diagnosed with dementia, running a community dementia grant pot for the area, providing a specialist dementia group (a more frequent Memory Time Café) and dementia-friendly activities (a Musical Memories Community Tour). The contract began start on October 1 and runs to December 31 2021. Dave Cooper, who is currently running a number of successful dementia projects in north Sheffield, will be involved in project design and development for SCCG. Dave said: “This is fantastic news. Not only will it help improve the quality of life for those newly diagnosed with dementia and those living well with dementia but we can through the grant pot assist those groups that wish to include them more in our friendly and caring community. “This could not be timelier as we are in the process of developing a community telephone help line and website to better inform people what is available in the Stocksbridge and Upper Don area to combat isolation and loneliness”. GRENOSIDE Scout and Guide Group are sad to announce that their extremely popular bonfire and firework display has been cancelled this year due to a sick horse living in a nearby field. Organisers of the bonfire, which attracts hundreds of people from across Sheffield each year, have tried to work with the horse’s owner to find a solution, however due to a bad case of ‘laminitis’ the horse cannot be moved. Chris Levesley, part of the Group’s fundraising
committee said: “If you’ve been to one of our events then you’ll be aware that there are horses in the fields around us. We’d arranged with the owner for them to be moved to the field furthest away, but one of the horses can barely move. “We have to put the welfare of this horse first and therefore couldn’t have the big firework display, we all love, so we have been left with no choice but to cancel the event.” The Scouts and Guides Group have been running
the bonfire in Grenoside for over 20 years and it is considered to be one of the best and most well organised events in the area. It is the groups biggest fundraising event of the year, which means cancelling it will have an impact on their annual fundraising efforts. This year that loss will have more of an impact than normal as the group are halfway through a 144m2 extension project to extend their Saltbox Lane Headquarters. So far, a whop-
ping £60k has been raised to fund the project but another £20K is needed to complete the remaining building work. Chris added: “We’re extremely disappointed as it’s one of the highlights of the year, but we will be back next year with a bigger and better Bonfire and Fireworks night. We also have lots of other events coming up such as Burns Nights and Millionaires Night, in conjunction with Wortley Rotary Club, so watch this space.”
The Group’s next fundraising event will be the Christmas Fair event at Grenoside Scout hut on Saturday November 30 at 10.30am. To find out more about this or any of their upcoming events follow Grenoside Scout and Guide Group Events and Info on Facebook or Twitter.
