Welcome to the September issue of Look Local Magazine. And just like that the summer holidays are over and it’s back to school. I hope that you have all enjoyed your summer and have created some lovely memories with your children, friends and family.Thismonth represents a huge milestone for Look Local as I celebrate the publication’s 10th Birthday! I can hardly believe it’s been a whole decade since this photo of me with the legend that is Raymond Blanc was taken. It was for my launch issue and I was privileged enough to interview him at the Thame Food Festival that year - it was a surreal but exciting moment for me.

Readers,

Hello

Our competitions in last month’s issue were very popular and the winners will be announced on my Facebook page very soon, so if you entered, keep your eyes peeled as you may be one of the lucky ones. And if you’d like the chance to WIN tickets this month to a Thame Players Production, turn to page 15. Until next month, enjoy reading... My little business wouldn’t be what it is today though without the support of others so I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has worked alongside me over the years from my family and friends to my team of cheerful deliverers, my wonderful readers and loyal advertisers. I have been working with many of the businesses in the magazine on their advertising, marketing, distribution and printing campaigns since launch day, back in 2012, which is a great testament to how successful the magazine has been for them. It makes me feel very proud that I have helped promote many local businesses to the masses and that they are seeing real results. It’s great that together we are all supporting our local economy by continuing to shop locally! And with the cost of living as it currently is its even more important that we continue to shop local.

Limestone is another natural stone that has been used to create fireplaces for centuries. It’s softer and has a more neutral tone than marbles and granites which means using limestone makes a room feel rich and warm. A limestone fireplace works perfectly with a room filled with varying textures and shapes, and both neutral and richer colour palettes.

Fireplaces are both an architectural focal point, as well as a cosy hub of the home. They are a place for loved ones to gather during colder months, or a peaceful retreat at the end of a long day. Every year, as we approach the cooler months, we take a look at upcoming fireplace trends, but what about those timeless designs, classic fireplace surrounds which continue to feel like a focal point no matter how the room around them changes. Stone, Wycombe Road, Stokenchurch,

A black granite, marble or Belgium black fossil limestone fireplace is both edgy and timeless. It is a bold choice, but this means it can withstand changes in room design. It can be given a modern lift surrounded by sleek furniture and bright colours, or it will anchor a more traditionally styled room with soft furnishings and heritage wallpapers.

Timeless Fireplace Design...

Classic Marble Perhaps the material many think of when discussing timeless fireplace designs, marbles like Carrara have been used for centuries because of their durability, beauty and ability to adapt to changing interior styles. Even the most ornate marble fireplaces have a timelessness to them. In fact, an ornate marble fireplace surround, in a room styled with a mix of modern and traditional pieces can look particularly impressive.

The 22nd Abingdon Air & Country Show returns with attractions for the whole family..... Saturday 10th September | Abingdon Airfield (Dalton Barracks)

This year’s three-hour Flying Display is set to include the Blades Aerobatic Display Team (4 Extra 300s flown by ex-RAF Red Arrows pilots), Europe’s only airworthy B17 Flying Fortress ‘Sally B’, a BBMF Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane Mk I R4119, the Gazelle Squadron (helicopter 4-ship display), Yak 3 and Yak 52, Wasp and Scout helicopters, an Auster and, of course, Richard Goodwin in his Muscle Pitts. All except the B17 and Spitfire will join others on the ground as part of the ‘static’ display. Among the fantastic line-up of static aircraft will be one of only two airworthy ex-Army Lynx AH7s. The appearance of any aircraft or display team is down to serviceability and the weather of course! Classic Jets radio-controlled models will perform two displays. An exciting first for us will be the premier display of the RAF Falcons Parachute Display team who originated at Abingdon in the early sixties but who are now based at RAF Brize Norton. Hopefully they will be able to do a high display so keep your fingers crossed for good weather!

September’s plant in focus is Grasses... Molinia caerulea, Stipa tenuissima, Calamagrostis brachytricha, Anemanthele lessoniana are poetic in their titles and in their grace in the border.

I recommend the stalwarts of Calamagrostis × acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’ for upright and compact performance, Stipa tenuissima for a natural flow and breeze reflective rhythm, for structure and seasonal colour Panicum virgatum ‘Heavy Metal’ and Carex elata ‘Aurea’ for block planting and edging. There is so much to be loved about grasses not least because they are land securing pioneers. So think frondly! of our tufty friends and nurture grasses at home and afield. Look locally over the garden gate with Lucie

All grasses are wind pollinated and amazingly and no doubt in part due to this fact they are on all continents even the polar regions. They are so adaptable they colonize spaces other plant life can’t. With shallow roots and bulletproof durability grasses can survive even though they crisp to a brown, a form of dormancy. We see this with our lawns lying latent waiting for rain or sat in a boggy mire during winter and then when they tap into that sweet spot for growth they are up and off again and away we mow!

I know not all are fond of the fronds of these swordlike perennials. We don’t all need to follow the fashionable at the Chelsea flower show or even the generic in municipal plantings on council borders. Yet even our lawns are under threat with synthetic alternatives that need no water, mowing or re-sowing! But grasses are more than meets the eye. Though I will wax lyrical about how wonderful they are when filtering low sunlight or how in a light breeze they form waves in the wind. They are September’s plant in focus because now as the summer wains and the season creeps steadily on we will see them golden and glow standing where other perennials fall. So if you are interested in bringing them into your garden I would like to share how to use them and how to maintain them. They really need to be repeated and in clumps to create impact. They have fabulous companions with Salvia nemorosa and Allium ‘Purple Sensation’. which will light up different seasons and will stand with them the winter long too. As a sward leaved perennial their growth from the basal plate is continuous throughout the season so maintenance with secateurs should be limited to the first spring cut down and then leave them to their devices. Not all grasses are the same. Some are deciduous and some are evergreen and the latter does not respond well to being cut to the base. Stipa tenuissima, for example, is best combed through with a gloved hand (as they are a little sharp ) or a leaf rake as they get clogged up with their seed cases.
