BOOKING DEADLINE for November 2019 issue: Friday 18th October

Hello Readers,

Welcome to the October 2019 Edition of Look Local Magazine. Autumn’s arrived, my favorite, which means its time to put on your big jumpers and wellies and head out across our glorious countryside taking in all the colours of the season as you go. If you enjoy the great outdoors you’ll be pleased to know that the Chiltern Walking Festival, organised by the Chiltern Conservation Board returns on 5th October providing you with over 80 guided walks across the beautiful Chilterns. Now in its third year the Chilterns Walking Festival provides opportunities to meet artists, craftspeople, farmers, archaeologists, historians, countryside rangers, food producers and storytellers of the Chilterns, and each walk is guided by an experienced walk leader who will bring their story to life. Whether you’re interested in sampling local drinks and produce, finding out about the history of the Chilterns heritage, or trying out a new activity or experience with your family, there is something for everyone at the Chilterns Walking Festival. The 16-day Chilterns Walking Festival has been designed to appeal to different age groups, interests and levels of fitness. There will be walks for young families, for people with limited mobility or with canine companions. Details of all guided walks, events and activities available in the autumn programme can be found on the website www.visitchilterns.co.uk/walkingfest. Most are free of charge though some require a small fee which is clearly shown. So get out and about and enjoy. Halloween falls during this month and Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway are hosting a selection on ghoulish themed events set to get your heart racing, such as a Kids Ride for only £1.00 per ticket (see advert on Pg 14 for further details). Waddesdon Manor also see the return of its ‘Terrifying Trail’ as well as other Halloween themed activities! Well worth a visit during the Half Term holiday with the kids. And remember to turn your clocks back an hour when you go to bed on Saturday 26th October. The winter nights are drawing in once more... Until next month, enjoy reading...

Join the baking nation with natural stone in your kitchen....

With Great British Bake Off in full swing, baking fever is making its annual sweep across the nation. Workplaces are filling up with experimental sweet treats and ovens are being stuffed with flavourful bread creations. If you’re feeling inspired, there’s no better addition to a bakers kitchen space than natural stone.

Marble – Because of its naturally cool temperature, marble has been used in bakeries and patisseries for hundreds of years. A chilled marble surface is ideal for keeping dough from sticking which means you don’t have to add too much extra flour. Marble is also used when working with chocolate. Chocolate melts at body temperature which makes it difficult to work with. However marble’s naturally cool surface helps keep chocolate cool and malleable. Granite – One of the most durable kitchen worktop choices, granite is perfect for experimental baking. Its stain, scratch and heat resistant, so you can roll, carve and shape straight on the surface, and those piping hot cake tins can go straight from the oven, on to the granite top. It’s also easy to clean. Granite can withstand temperatures of 400 degrees or more so can also be used as a baking stone to bake bread or BBQ pizza. Drop in to Coulon Stone’s Stokenchurch showroom where they can quickly knock up a granite baking stone suitable for ovens, BBQs and pizza ovens.

** WIN A MARBLE BOARD FOR YOUR HOME** If you’re an avid baker, then you might want to consider at the very minimum investing in a marble chopping/kitchen board. And here at Coulon Stone, we’re celebrating everything that baking brings at this time of year by giving away three marble boards. All you have to do to be entered into the prize draw is like our Facebook page between the 1st – 31st October. Winners will be drawn at random and notified by the 12th November 2019. You will be required to collect the board from our Stokenchurch showroom. Good Luck!

Oxfordshire residents that have been affected by suicide are urged to give their feedback to help shape a suicide prevention strategy! Between 2016 and 2018 there were a total of 155 deaths by suicide in Oxfordshire. Of these,

126 of these were men which means that deaths in men outnumbered those in women by 4:1. In Oxfordshire there is a determination to reduce the number of deaths by suicide. The Oxfordshire Suicide Prevention Multi-Agency Group formed in 2014 and brings together public, private and charity sector organisations, all of whom are committed to suicide prevention. The Oxfordshire suicide prevention group is about to revise its action plan and develop a strategy and wants to hear from people in Oxfordshire who have been affected by suicide or who may have had suicidal thoughts themselves. There is a determination to reduce the numbers of death by suicide therefore we are asking residents to complete the survey to help achieve this understanding. The survey will be available until 5 November and can be found via this link: www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/suicidepreventionsurvey

Entertainment Towersey Bell Ringers St. Catherine’s Towersey is a member of the Oxfordshire Diocesan Guild of Bellringers, South Oxon Branch. They are one of only a handful of 4 bell towers in the UK. The group currently practise every Wednesday evening and meet in the tower at 7:30pm. This is open to anyone would like to come along and see what church bell ringing is about and there is often the chance to have a go yourself if you would like! This is a very friendly local group and everyone is welcome. You may be surprised to know that there is a lot more to Church Bell Ringing than just pulling a rope. Full circle ringing is a skill that takes on average 8-12 hours of tuition to grasp but months of practice to perfect and learning to ring the bell is only the 1st step. Once you can control the bell this opens up the whole new world of Change Ringing! For further information please visit: www.towerseybellringers.org.uk

Health & Wellbeing

: 7th - 11th OCTOBER In accordance with The NiCE guidelines ( January 2019 )your GP will follow medical pathway protocols and may well advise on soft tissue therapy, such as Bowen Therapy, exercise programs, to resume normal activities, return to work , recommend anti inflammatory medication and offer psychological support if necessary. Scans, injections, opioid medication, traction, corsets, acupuncture and surgery are not recommended unless symptom presentation indicates the need for underlying conditions. Therefore the case for the majority of patients is ‘YOU WILL GET BETTER’! But what if you don’t! As is the case with many of my clients, they come to me when they are at a loss what to do. Last month in my Clinic I saw a variety of clients presenting with back pain, some managing long term / chronic issues and several presenting with recent/acute symptoms. My ‘acute’ clients are thoroughly assessed, for presentation of RED FLAG symptoms. Very occasionally I will see a client with sudden onset back pain, apparently no known cause i.e. fall, accident or sporting injury.

CASE STUDY - ACUTE - RED FLAG REFERRAL

I was confident that I could treat MR X as there was no immediate concern about AAA, but his symptoms I felt needed further investigation. I wrote to his GP with reference to RED FLAGS. He was given an immediate appointment. Assessment and bloods results were inconclusive; the thought being that the histamine response to the fly bite was contributing to his issues. A follow up Bowen session saw an improvement of all symptoms.

CASE STUDY - CHRONIC - OPIOID MEDICATION Mrs Z - One of my long term clients presented recently with a severe change of back pain symptoms. Her treatments are regular and generally enable her to continue with her busy, hands on outdoor life. I was confident that over a period of time the soft and gentle, non manipulative Bowen treatments would get her up to normal speed and was not concerned enough to refer her to the medics. She did, however, depend heavily on increased medication including prescribed opioids for a short period. Subsequent treatments have shown a huge improvement and medication has been reduced as per medic advice. Public Health England have published guidelines for the use of OPIOIDS (i.e Morphine, codeine, oxycontin are commonly prescribed) and indeed there has been much in the press recently about addiction and over prescription. Opioids offer good pain relief for acute condones but can become highly addictive. If a patient has pain that remains severe despite this medication, then it means it isn’t working and should be stopped, even if there is no other treatment on offer.

Pain is complex and this is where Bowen Therapy may be able to help you manage! Please contact me for further information. Jen Webster Bowen, Advanced NST practitioner (BSc MBTPA CNHC reg) E: info@jenwebsterbowen.com | W: www.jenwebsterbowen.com T: 07768 188664

Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.

Mr X age 50 is a regular client, we manage lower back and shoulder issues to ensure he continues to play golf and is comfortable when traveling and doing office work. He came as an emergency with severe back pain radiating into his abdomen and was feeling unusually fatigued He had a recent horse fly bite, which was causing his knee to swell. He is generally fit and well, however there is a family history of Aortic Abdominal Aneurysm.

Hemp, CBD and weight loss

Hemp and CBD are my life’s passion, I literally live, eat and sleep everything Hemp and CBD. It has changed my life and many others too. Back in the summer of 2014, I was about 130lb heavier than I am today! It still amazes me daily how different I look and feel. September 2014, I decided I needed to do something, I was getting heavier and heavier, no ‘diet’ seemed to work, or if it did, I put it all back on and more. Something needed to change! I’m on my feet all day and I needed more energy, so I started looking up natural healthy foods that I could include in my daily diet without feeling deprived or lacking energy, and I discovered Hemp! After a few weeks of including it in my diet, I discovered that I was no longer lacking energy, I was feeling fuller for longer and I was losing weight. Bonus! I kept it off! Not long after I was round a friend’s house and they were vaping CBD so following my amazing results from eating hemp, I was intrigued. Being a smoker at the time, I wanted to give it a go. And from that day on, I have never smoked another cigarette as all desire for them evaporated. And that was the beginning of my CBD love… HOW DOES IT WORK? CBD is one of over 100 compounds found in the cannabis plant and belongs to a class of ingredients called Cannabinoids. CBD is the major non-psychoactive component of Cannabis, meaning you won’t get high from taking it. The body has an Endocannabinoid System (ECS), with two cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are in the brain and central nervous system only whilst CB2 receptors are found throughout the body. However, CB1 receptors become more widespread in people who are overweight and can be found specifically in fatty tissue. This has caused researchers to believe that there is a link between the CB1 receptors and obesity. CBD doesn’t directly activate the CB receptors, but it does influence the body’s natural cannabinoids to either block off or activate the receptors. Evidence has shown that it can aid weight loss and help prevent metabolic disorders. CB1 receptors in the body stimulate the appetite so using CBD may influence the body to shut off these receptors and help reduce the appetite for some people. CBD also plays multiple roles in how it interacts with fat, helping to convert white or ‘bad’ fat into brown fat and stimulate the body to break down fats more easily. The process of turning white fat cells into brown fat cells changes how these cells continue to act in the body. Brown fat cells burn off energy as heat, meaning you burn off calories much easier. It can work to reduce our weight because it stimulates completely different elements in our bodies to assist the breakdown of extra fats. Also, it can help burn extra energy in the best way, right down to the mobile stage. It does this by decreasing your lipid manufacturing, suppressing urges for food and by increasing your metabolism. CBD interacts with our ECS (Endocannabinoid System), which exists to regulate a variety of psychological and cognitive processes. Metabolism and weight loss are closely linked because your bodies’ metabolism is what converts your food into energy within the body. It is responsible for the bodies’ ability to burn energy and at the speed at what it does. Want to include CBD or Hemp into your diet? If you would like any further information about I offer a wide range of high quality, lab tested CBD Hemp and CBD please drop me an email, Products and highly recommend Raised Spirit jem@flawsomejem.com or visit my website, Hemp Products. www.flawsomejem.com. Visit www.raisedspirit.com and use D See you next month for more CB code: JEMLOCAL to save 10%

PLEASE NOTE: CBD is neither a medicine nor a cure for any illness and by no means do we make any medical claims. CBD can help to maintain and support your health and a healthy lifestyle.

By Jemma Stevens of Flawsome Jem Hemp has become a massive part of my life in recent years! I eat Hemp in some form every day, whether it’s Hemp Protein, Hemp Seeds, Hemp Oil or Hemp Milk and of course my daily dose of CBD and over the last 18 months I have lost 9 stone in weight and maintained that loss. I believe Hemp and CBD have played a considerable part in both my weight loss and maintaining.
