On the subject of charities I wanted to bring attention Wendover based charity, Lindengate, whose mission statement is to improve and maintain good mental health through nature-based activities. Their 6 acre well-being gardens, which are open to all, have been awarded with a Green Flag Community Award 2022, for having one of the best quality community gardens in the Country and are recognised as a flagship charity in Bucks. This does not however protect them from the enormous pressure that is being put on all charities which is why they’ve launched a Winter Appeal to help raise vitally important funds and enable them to continue being a lifeline to so many. To find out more, turn to page 16 or visit their website to donate: www.lindengate.org.uk/winter-emergency-appeal.

Guide: Buying a Wood Burning Stove... By Coulon Stone Wood burning or multi fuel stoves are a popular way of warming homes. They are efficient, and when complimented by a natural stone fire surround and hearth, they create a completely cosy look. They come in a variety of sizes, shapes, colours, designs and heat outputs which can make it difficult to decide which is the best stove for your home. Based on 30 years of experience working alongside stove and fuel installers, as well as guiding customers on appropriate hearths and surrounds, we’ve come up with some of the things you should consider when choosing a stove. First you’ll need to decide which fuel you want to use. Wood burning stoves are of course the most traditional and in many ways the most simplistic with just one or two vents controlling the fire. You’ll need to consider your access to wood and whether you have room to store it. As the name suggests, multi-fuel stoves can burn a variety of solid fuels – wood, coal, pellets and peat. Wood requires an air supply from above to burn efficiently, whereas coals needs a source of air from below, so multi-fuel stoves have extra vents to allow for this. Some people find that multi-fuel stoves create more mess than their wood-burning counterparts. To get the most out of your fireplace, it’s important to get the right size for your space. If it’s too big, it will dominate the room and it could be too hot, but if it’s too small, it will be overloaded and could jeopardise the lifetime of the fireplace. When you go to a showroom or contact your local stove installer, go armed with information – the size and use of the room, the insulation in your home, how many windows are there, potential stove placement and the ceiling height. All good stove and flue systems installers will visit your home before any work is done to work out what needs to be done to the chimney, whether you need an exterior fireproof wall, and whether any work needs to be carried out on the stove inset. Installation of a stove and flue system should be carried out by a HETAS registered engineer. Installation can take as little as two hours, or multiple visits depending on the complexity of the job. In most cases you’ll need a fire retardant material for the stove to sit on. Hard, natural stones like granite, slate and limestone are a popular choice as they are extremely durable, easy to look after and come in a variety of gorgeous colours and textures. The hearth will need to be fitted before the stove so it’s often best to have the stove installer and stone mason communicating with each other to ensure all is completed in the correct order. If you’d like some advice on trusted stove and and flue system installers, speak to your stone mason as they are likely to know the best local ones, and visa versa. Whether you want to go over the top, keep it simple or somewhere in the middle, updating your fireplace will always be a welcome addition to your home – and may even add value.

So, if you are looking at your fireplace, or even a space on your wall and wondering what you can do, then contact Coulon Stone on

Jazz in Thame!

A unique opportunity to experience a fantastic live performance. Celebrated Irish pianist John Donegan spent many years based in the exceptionally musical city of Bristol, where he was a much respected performer and composer on the circuit, before his other career in banking took him overseas. He’s now very much back in England from where he travels to perform in his native Ireland and the rest of Europe and he’s creating fantastic music still as a pianist and as a composer with several acclaimed recordings to his name. His latest offering – A Kite for Kate – is dedicated to his daughter and brings together five (plus John equals six) musicians

Winter Emergency Appeal 2022 ... In 2022, Lindengate Mental Health Charity has already supported over 1500 people, through visits to their gardens, volunteering and participation in their programmes. They want to be able to continue to support people, but, in this economic climate, need additional funding just to be able to maintain current levels of service. 1 in 4 people experience mental ill health, which could be one of your loved ones. Together, we can help change lives. Please support the appeal now. Lindengate are recognised as a flagship charity in Bucks, but this does not protect them from the enormous pressure that is being put on all charities. They need £2,500 per day to support the 2000 adults and young people who will benefit from being at Lindengate each year. Despite diversifying thier income streams and working tirelessly, Lindengate needs an additional £80,000.

Home & Garden

Look locally over the garden gate with Lucie Giselle Ponsford

‘Tis the season, well mid way through Michaelmas season which is September - December and this month’s plant in focus is the Michaelmas daisy. The star of our late season perennials, its blooms of pink, purple, white and blue are perfectly paired with autumnal leaf colours, of oranges, reds, yellows and browns. Asters are named after astéri the Greek word for star due to the astral-like composite (daisy) flowers that float on strong stems in otherwise quiet and browning borders. I love these plants, they are great for pollinators getting in the last of the nectar stores and of course extend the interest in the garden way beyond late summer. In fact, they are triggered into flowering precisely by the reduced sunlight of autumn days, an adaptation no doubt to take advantage of the reduced competition as other flowering plants become dormant. They will hold after a frost too unlike the Mexican Sunflowers (Dahlia) who, from hotter climes will rupture with the destructive force of liquid to solid in their turgid water packed stems. I highly recommend a garden centre visit to see the diversity in size, stature and colour and once you have them they are an interesting plant to propagate, easy when you know how! - you can of divide after about 5 years as with most perennials but they will grow decent plants from inch long root cuttings taken in spring, which is a little bit of an extra chore of the season but well worth lifting the perennials and seeing the new, white fleshy growths full of juvenile vigor and ready to plant out by the end of that year. Let their stems and seed heads stand with grasses and other strong stemmed perennials like Verbena bonariensis and Echinacea and they will provide frost-covered beauty through winter too. Truly a heavenly herald to starry nights and cosy jumper days in the garden. For more garden tips and information visit my Facebook page @mimosagardendesign and our community group @ilovemynewgarden.

With love, Lucie
