There is also another display taking place on this date at Long Crendon School (Chilton Road). Gates open at 4:45pm with the display starting at 6pm. All tickets are £5.50 in advance or £6.50 on the night. If you know of any others, please do feel free to share them on my Facebook Page. Although this time of year brings many exciting celebrations it can also be a challenging season for some, with as many as 1 in 6 people suffering with a low mood in winter and a small number of these will suffer with the more serious Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Thame Therapy Clinic’s, Andy Roscoe suggests Acupuncture as a way to help you cope with the season shift (see Pg.25). Then on page 28 there’s another very insightful article about the benefits of Meditation in the workplace. With Mental Health being so openly discussed now this article is very topical and interesting. Until next month, enjoy reading...

Tis the season to update your fireplace...

T

he leaves are dropping covering the countryside in a warm orange glow, and our favourite jumpers are being fished out from the back of our wardrobes. It’s autumn, and we’re pleased because that means soon we’ll be lighting our fire and snuggling up in front of it. Once again our fireplace will be the focal point of our home, so if you’re looking at yours thinking it could do with an update, here’s some inspiration based on some natural stone designs we’ve been loving. Black – use black natural stones like marble and slate for a fireplace with a bold, sultry edge. Designs could include a simple, matte and modern slate, or a classic, ornate, polished marble. The ability to withstand intense heat, and easily cleaned surfaces mean these stones have been used as fireplace surrounds for centuries. Black fireplaces pair perfectly with warm toned walls and metallic home accessories, including decorative brass fire screens. Natural stones with vibrant tiles – the Victorians used decorated tiles in their cast iron fire surrounds, and now the tradition of tiles is back, except this time instead of cast iron, we’re pairing tiles with neutral natural stones like beautiful marbles and fossil filled limestones. Using tiles adds a pop of pattern to your fireplace, and paired with classic natural stone allows you to create your perfect vibe, whilst remaining durable and low maintenance. Floor to ceiling – forget fire surround and think fire wall. What could be more of a focal point than a fire surround that fills the wall from floor to ceiling. Really show-off the beauty of natural stones like marble and slate by wrapping your chimney breast or cladding your wall. Marble and slate are available in thin, tile like thicknesses, as well as a range of textures, including flame brushed, matte and polished, and of course designs and colours, allowing you to create a sculptural fireplace. For your free, no obligation fire surround quote, or for advice and inspiration, please visit our Stokenchurch showroom, or get in touch through our website www.coulonstone.com or by phone on 01494 484333.

NEWS & EVENTS in our region

WW2 veterans’ portraits now on display at Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum Opening hours: Tuesday - Friday, 10am-5pm | Saturday, 11am-5pm | Sunday, 2pm5pm. The county’s only military history museum is located in the grounds of the Oxfordshire Museum, Park Street, Woodstock. A new exhibition of photographic portraits of WW2 veterans is now on display at the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum, Woodstock, until 5th January 2020. The exhibition, titled 3945 Portraits, is the work of awardwinning photographer Glyn Dewis. He is leading an ongoing project to photograph Second World War veterans from all branches of the armed forces, and from a wide range of different regiments and corps, including the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. The portraits will go on display alongside recorded interviews with the featured veterans, recounting their wartime experiences, as well as a number of drawings produced by children as a ‘thank you’ to them. The project, and the exhibition itself, is designed to ‘remember, honour and educate’. Glyn Dewis explains that he intends to ‘honour and remember our surviving World War 2 veterans by photographing as many of them as possible in order to provide both them and their families with classic, timeless portraits they treasure and can remain in their families for generations to come’ and ‘to sensitively educate the current and future younger generations about the events of World War 2 and of those who served, survived and were lost’. The exhibition will see a number of the featured veterans visit the museum, and a surprise medal presentation for one of them. Two members of the Glider Pilot Regiment who were good friends during their service but have not seen each other since the end of the war, are also set to reunite during the launch, having both had their portraits taken by Glyn. Glyn will also be running two 3945 Portraits project workshops on the 9th November and 7th December between 11am and 2pm. These will focus on demonstrating how the portraits were taken using minimal kit and often in very limited space, showing how we can all create classic portraits without the need for all the latest and greatest equipment. Spaces can be booked on the SOFO Museum website.

Are you often in Pain? Pain is subjective; it may be specific and usually chronic. When you are at an all time low, a visit to your GP may not elicit anything more than an increase in pain medication along with anti depressive solutions. This generally occurs once all underlying conditions have been excluded and generally the quickest way to silence a pain is by taking drugs which is only a temporary measure at best…

So where do you go for help? The Bowen Technique is a gentle hands on, non invasive complementary therapy, which was introduced to the UK from Australia in 1992. Bowen Works with the body’s own healing systems. Rather than ‘making’ the body change, Bowen ‘asks’ the body to recognise and make the balancing changes it needs. With fingers and thumbs the Bowen practitioner makes rolling movements over fascia, at precise points over the body. No hard tissue manipulation or force is used. In recent years I have extended my Bowen practice, with professional development courses from world-renowned tutors from Australia. I have TMJ and Hormone certification, skills to muscle test and apply appropriate procedures to the treatment, this is the NST (Neuro Structural Integrative Technique) part of my qualification and very much part of the Tom Bowen structure of treating. As A Bowen / NST practitioner my job is two fold: 1. To initially address your pain and / or address your pain and the issues you present with moving you to better physical and mental balance.

So, Bowen / NST treatments are hands on and endeavour to address the physical issues which you undoubtedly present with and are mostly relieved, however, I offer a full consultation, and take time to elicit a full medical history. With very many clients there are other issues that are flagged up that contribute to the PAIN scenario. My treatments are not prescriptive but often incorporate exercises, drinking water, postural changes and the use of Epsom Salts.

Testimonials As I write, I have had some wonderful comments from new clients this week... “I feel a million dollars’ I walked out of your clinic feeling so much better… mentally I am able to cope... with less (generalised) pain I can concentrate on bigger issues” “Thank you… I feel so different, I was able to walk to meet my grandchildren from school” “My teenager seems a less tense and ‘troubled’ child” “I’m not prepared to report a change… but I think my (debilitating) dizziness is subsiding” I look forward to my next appointments with these clients and am hopeful that sustainable changes are taking place! Please contact me for further information. Jen Webster Bowen, Advanced NST practitioner (BSc MBTPA CNHC reg) E: info@jenwebsterbowen.com | W: www.jenwebsterbowen.com T: 07768 188664

Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.

2. To assist in guiding you to achieve the level of health to help you manage your specific lifestyle. It is, however, not my job to dictate terms, but to provide options. Physical therapy along will not always provide the perfect solution: ongoing clinical work often goes hand in hand with emotional and nutritional support and adequate hydration, all of which will depend on the willingness of the individual.

WINTERS COMING help your body adjust to the changing season with Acupuncture!

Andy Roscoe, Acupuncturist and Director at Thame Therapy Clinic, offers an Acupuncture perspective on the changes accompanying the onset of Winter. The clocks have just gone back and although it is Autumn the diminishing light at both ends of the day sends a message to all of nature to hunker down and get ready for Winter hibernation. All that is except for those on two legs who now get ready to work harder than ever! The effort to sustain this workload can have consequences for our health unless we find a way of putting back the energy that we give out. To do this requires acknowledgement of some basic principles:1. First we need to take adequate rest. This means breaks fromwork in the day and getting 7-8 hours sleep at night. 2. Second we need to eat at the right times and make warming cooked food with plenty of root vegetables the mainstay of our diet. Porridge, soups, casseroles all tick this box. 3. Third we need to take regular exercise where we move our limbs about and preferably go outdoors. If options are limited, 30 mins of walking a day is sufficient to do this. To these daily routines I would also encourage you to have Acupuncture to help you adjust to the seasonal changes. Acupuncture is good for tired bodies and flagging spirits. It is not a fix by itself, but more of a catalyst to help you become energised and motivated to look after yourself better during the cold, dark months. Having Acupuncture once a month is often sufficient to keep you above the waterline if you are feeling overwhelmed. For more information on this subject contact Acupuncturist and Clinic Director Andy Roscoe on 01844 215555 Web: www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk | Email: Andy@thametherapyclinic.co.uk

“I tried CBD before and it didn’t work! Why is this..? By Jemma Stevens of Flawsome Jem

Here are my top reasons as to why CBD may not have worked for you in the past. 1. Your CBD product isn’t from a reputable source: Where did you buy your CBD oil? As it grows in popularity, it seems like CBD is popping up everywhere from online companies to overthe-counter shops. You might have even tried a free sample to see if it works without investing anything more than the cost of shipping. Unfortunately, some of these products don’t have high-quality CBD. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate the industry, and some scammers take full advantage of that fact by selling lowquality products that aren’t as they claim to be. Some have even been found to contain no CBD at all. So, the next time you’re looking to invest in a new CBD product, use these three tips to make sure the product lives up to its promises: • • •

Look for evidence of third-party lab tests. Lab testing can reveal exactly how much CBD is in the product, and the test results should be available for you to see for yourself. Read consumer reviews. Pick from a list of well-established brands.

Many CBD users have reported trying several different brands before settling on one that works for them, so keep searching if your first try doesn’t produce the results you’re looking for. body. It is responsible for the bodies’ ability to burn energy and at the speed at what it does. 2. You need to build it up in your system: Finding the right dosage of CBD can be a tricky endeavour. The appropriate amount varies for each individual, as every person has a unique biology that results in a different reaction. So how do you figure out what’s right for you? Experts recommend starting with a low dose — 20 to 40 milligrams daily, according to Healthline’s Medical Network (HMN) — and slowly increasing dosage over time until you find your “sweet spot.” Some find that taking a daily dose can help sustain a level of CBD in your body, which might stimulate your endocannabinoid system to make it react more to cannabinoids like CBD. 3. You need to give it more time: Many people take CBD for several weeks or even several months before they see a difference. Exploring the effects of CBD isn’t as simple as taking a couple of painkillers and calling it a day. It actually requires a certain level of commitment to put time and thought into your process of uncovering the long-term effects. If you’re still not seeing results after a while (think a few months), then it may be time to move on and try a different brand. Patience is key, and while it can be frustrating to keep trying with no results, you may end up feeling super grateful that you didn’t give up. 4. You need a different delivery system: You can find everything from CBD coffee to bath salts. Common forms of CBD include, tinctures, topical creams, vape oils, capsules or suppositories and edible treats like gummies and chocolate. So, if you’ve been trying one delivery system with no luck, it’s possible that a different form would work better for you.

Would you like to give CBD another go? I recently launched my own CBD Product range and have lots of products to choose from including tinctures, capsules, topicals, hot drinks, vape juices, hair care and bath products. All my CBD products are UK sourced, high quality and all backed by lab tests. You can find out more: www.flawsomejem.com/shop-cbd

Meditation in the Workplace By Sophie Lacey, Linden Tree Meditation

HSE figures from 2017/18 list the number of days lost to work-related stress as 15.4 million across the UK, and that’s before we take into account stress from personal and outside factors which is harder to measure. Mental illness as a whole is estimated to cause a loss of over 70 million work days and a cost to business of around £35 billion a year. You can’t fail to have noticed that mental health awareness is all around us, leading companies to seek a more proactive approach to wellbeing among their staff. Many companies have wellbeing strategies already in place (45% in 2017 and rising) and are allocating budgets accordingly. As part of an overall strategy that includes gym membership, private health screening and virtual GPs, there is now a growing trend to offer meditation & mindfulness training. Meditation is proven in numerous scientific studies to alleviate stress by altering the brain waves from a high-alert ‘fight or flight’ pattern to a relaxed alert mode, which is far more conducive to concentration and performance as well as to an overall sense of wellbeing. Being permanently set in ‘fight or flight’ with constant exposure to adrenaline and cortisol also has an enormous negative impact on physical health including the digestion, waterworks, heart, lungs, hormones, bones, muscles and cellular ageing. It goes without saying that a happy, relaxed work force is a cooperative and productive work force, although I am careful not to present meditation purely as a productivity tool: employees should be valued as human beings, not as ‘worker bees’ and so this is about taking a holistic approach to people’s lives and creating balance. If you’re a business owner, manager, or an employee with an interest in implementing meditation classes in your place of work, I can help. I’m an accredited meditation teacher, qualified and insured to teach within a company setting. My classes are flexible and designed according to need; incorporating techniques from across secular and spiritual/philosophical traditions, for example: mindfulness, guided visualisation, Buddhism and yoga. I screen carefully for mental illness and students are supported in dealing with obstacles or difficult emotions. I also specialise in meditation for menopause (something else companies need to be aware of) and offer workshops in nature and aromatherapy meditation.

Recipe

Cook with... Pumpkin & Chickpea Curry Serves 4

Halloween may be over but that doesn’t mean its the end of pumpkin season. Instead of disgarding the insides of your spooky creations why not cook up some magic in the kitchen with this delicious curry from Mama Dor’s Kitchen.

Ingredients • • • • •

Method: 1. Tip the pumpkins into a baking tray, drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle on a little of the spice blend. Stir well and bake in a 180 degree oven for about 30mins, until mostly cooked.

• • •

2 cans chickpeas, drained 1 small pumpkin, peeled & chopped into 1cm cubes 1 onion, peeled and chopped finely 2 green chillies, chopped finely (optional) 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling on the pumpkin 4 tablespoons natural yoghurt 4 tablespoons tomato purée 2 heaped tablespoons Mama Dor’s Chana Masala Spice Blend (if you don’t have this, you can use a shop bought curry powder but it won’t taste as delicious!)

2. While the pumpkin is baking, fry off the onions & chillies (if using) in the olive oil until golden brown. Turn the heat down and add the yoghurt (which you should let sit at room temperature for 20mins before cooking to avoid it splitting), tomato purée and the spice blend. Add approx 1/2 cup of water and stir well. Allow the spices to cook until you have a silky sauce with pockets of oil bubbling. Add the chickpeas, and cover. Leave to simmer. 3. Once the pumpkin is mostly cooked (you don’t want it mushy!), tip into the chickpea mixture and stir well. You may want to add more water if it’s too dry. Cover and leave to infuse and simmer for about 20 mins. Serve with fluffy basmati rice.

Mama Dor’s Kitchen provides a range of authentic Indian Spice Blends. All blends are sugar & gluten free and are suitable on a vegan diet. They are provided in a refillable glass spice jar and come with an easy to follow recipe card. There are over 15 blends to choose from, all created with family and ease of use in mind.
