Hello Readers,

09

Welcome to the MARCH issue. Sunday 20th marks the first day of Spring - although the very wet and windy weather we have been experiencing lately might make us think otherwise. It is however encouraging to know that lighter and warmer days are coming, especially as we are due to see a huge increase in our energy bills later this month.

10 CONTENTS 07. Home & Garden Loft Ladders you can trust from Home County Loft Ladders. 09. SPECIAL OFFER Treat yourself to a Hot Stones Massage at Thame Therapy Clinic. 10. NEW FEATURE Baby Sensory comes to Thame with Yasmin. 13. LEGAL SERVICE What is a Public Notary and when might you need one? 14/15. Sound of music Simon Markland talks us through this months music scene and upcoming events. 16/17. News & Events News & events from our region. 20. home & Garden Cherry Blossom with Mimosa Garden Design. 24. Get the Look Create a Bathroom retreat with Coulon Stone.

04

With this in mind, I thought it would be useful to share some Energy Saving Tips that I recieved from Chinnor & Thame Friends of the Earth (www.chinnorthamefoe.org.uk) which will help to keep your costs down as well as assist in reducing your carbon footprint: • Have you got thick curtains? If not, why not invest in some thermal-lined ones and make sure you draw them at dusk. •

Draught-proof your windows and doors. This simple DIY project is one of the cheapest ways to save energy. However, take care not to block or seal any ventilation such as underfloor grilles or air bricks as it is necessary to have fresh air and reduce condensation.

Wash clothes at a lower temperature – 30 or 40 degrees is often adequate.

Fit foil or reflector panels behind radiators so that heat is reflected back into the room.

If you have a hot water cylinder, fitting an insulating jacket could save £20 year. Similarly, make sure all pipes a lagged.

I would also like to draw your attention to our newest monthly contributor, Yasmin, who runs Baby Sensory Classes in Thame & Oxford. Each month Yasmin will be focusing on differnet developmental benefits to Baby Sensory. For her first installment, turn to page 10. Mothers Day also falls this month (Sunday 27th) so if you’d like to get out and about locally why not treat your mum to Afternoon Tea at Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway. See advert on page 17 for further inf info. As always, Stay safe, and continue to shop and support local...

Legal Services

What is a Notary Public and when might you need one? A Notary Public may be required when dealing with legal matters overseas or transactions with an international element. It is possible that the party receiving a particular document in the other country may require that you sign it in the presence of a Notary Public. A Notary is a qualified lawyer - a member of a branch of the legal profession in England and Wales that goes back to 1553, when quilled pens and sealing wax were standard tools of the trade! Notaries are appointed by the Court of Faculties of the Archbishop of Canterbury and are subject to strict regulation. There are only about 750 Notaries in the whole country. Notaries are primarily concerned with the authentication and certification of signatures, authority and capacity relating to documents for use abroad. They serve both private and business clients. The most common tasks include: Preparing and authenticating powers of attorney for use overseas Dealing with purchase or sale of land and property abroad Authenticating foreign wills and providing documents to deal with the administration of the estates of people who are abroad, or owning property abroad Authenticating personal documents and information for immigration or emigration purposes, or to apply to marry or to work abroad, such as education or professional qualifications or declarations of freedom to marry Authenticating company and business documents and transactions or providing certificates as to the status of a company or the identity of its directors If you do need to engage the services of a Notary or require any further information, please contact Nicholas E.B. Brown who has an office in Thame at 5A Cornmarket (in Pump Lane), OX9 3DX.

Home & Garden

Look locally over the garden gate with Lucie Giselle Ponsford

March’s flower is Cherry Blossom with its pure pink-frilled frivolity after winter... The delicate blooms are unfurled like petticoats from tightly packed buds. The stamen stretch forth making a determined plea for early pollinators to come hither. Winds can and will in a bad year reduce the success of setting seed to nought and a late frost will seriously impact the harvest of all the Rosaceae family. Cherries, apples and pears, plums and the like bare their blooms early allowing time by late summer for fruit to weigh burdensome on the bower. Now though we will see the show: a succession of flowers on the ornamental and productive cherries in our gardens and parks. The cherry is naturally distributed across the world and thus cultivated descendants of the various species have different flowering times. Starting in early March and finishing late in April. The cherry has a distinctive bark that to the trained eye is as telling as the blooms that mark our spring resurgence. In most instances, the bark is silverish and smooth with the grain circling the stem. There is also the shiny, red bark of Prunus serrula or the Paperbark Cherry. But the bark, which is paper-thin, is the key to the maintenance regime. Pruning should be done in late summer when the thin-skinned prunus can repair open cuts without the threat of the fungal spores so prevalent in the cold wet months. Silver Leaf is a real risk to cherries; it is a fungal disease of the wood and is greatly reduced by summer pruning. Some favourite cherries cultivars for the small garden are Prunus incisa ‘Kojo-no-mai’ (a small shrub cherry), P. Kanzan (a low spreading tree), P. Royal Burgundy (a lovely double, late-flowering cherry with deep pink blooms).

With love, Lucie

Natural stone around the home... By Coulon Stone

Natural stones like granite, marble and limestone are materials typically saved for bathrooms, kitchens and exterior projects. Having been formed millions of years ago deep within the Earth’s crust these rocks are hard wearing and easily maintained making them the obvious choice for areas of the home where a wipe-clean, waterproof surface is essential. They are often considered to add a cooler tone to an interior design, which works well as a shower surround, or kitchen worktop paired with warmer wooden cabinets, but could feel ‘off ’ elsewhere. However, we are seeing a trend towards using natural stones in less common interior settings, and in both minimalist schemes, bolder maximalist designs and everything in between.

Bedroom Furniture

Marble topped bedside tables and chest-of-drawers are making a comeback. Marble used on bedroom furniture was first popularised during the Rococo era of the 1840s, and it is increasing in popularity again today. In an attempt to make more planet friendly choices, we see more and more people up-cycling the pieces they already have by adding a marble top. Particularly popular is adding a marble top inspired by the Rococo period, to a mid-century modern piece of furniture, bringing together two big hitters in interior history, and balancing the cool natural stone with a warm wood.

Dining Table

Another surface in the house vulnerable to spills, chips and scratches, is the dining table, so it needs to be made of sturdy stuff, and fewer things are sturdier than natural stones. Whilst there may be concerns that such a large piece of stone would create a feeling of hardness, in this example the polished limestone is warmed up alongside the deep green walls, rattan table mats and luscious houseplants. By approaching your local stone mason for a dining table, you can pick the stone yourself and have it cut to your exact design and size requirements, giving you a completely bespoke piece of furniture.

Bedroom Hearth

If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace in your bedroom, whether it’s a working fireplace or not, you may be tempted by a tiled hearth, after all, who wants a hunk of natural stone on their bedroom floor. However, there are softer options than traditional hearth materials like granite or slate. Why not try a textured limestone or marble tile for a light, but natural look.

If you are interested in any of the above please get in touch by visiting www.coulonstone.com And for more natural stone inspiration follow us on Instagram (@coulonstoneltd) or Facebook (@coulonstoneltd).
