BOOKING DEADLINE for April 2020 issue:

Friday 13th March

As we enter Spring, the season of new beginnings, you may notice that the magazine has undergone a revamp with a fresh new colour scheme and updated logo. We also have a new website under construction. These changes are by no means coincidence but more of a celebration of unison as my business joins forces with award winning, digital marketing expert, Chris Harris of Harris Consultancy (www.harris-consultancy.co.uk). Both Chris and I are extremely excited to be working together in a bid to offer clients full marketing support encompassing Magazine & Online Advertising, Print & Design, Social Media and Website Creation and Management. Read more about our collaboration on page 6. I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank Peter Hasert Photography for working with us on the front cover shot. The weather wasn’t on our side but Peter was so professional and made a very muddy photo shoot up Chinnor Hills a very enjoyable time. Check out his website to view his work. Mothers Day falls this month, so if you’d like to get out and about locally why not pay a visit to Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway where on Sunday 22nd March, Mums travel HALF PRICE. Or if your mum is a fan of perfume and home fragrances then check out our gift guide on page 29. If you’re a keen gardener and can’t wait to get outdoors and start tending to your plants now the weather is brightening up then be sure to check out our homes and gardens section for inspiration. And don’t forget - the clocks go forward on Sunday, 29th March at 1am – so that will become 2am. See I told you spring was almost here! Until next month, enjoy reading...

Business Editorial

NEW BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP

Helps Develop Bright Ideas for Local Business As the old saying goes, “two heads are better than one’, so when award winning, Digital Marketing Agency, Harris Consultancy approached Look Local Magazine with an idea of working alongside one another, the publication owner was keen to meet. The vision was to pool both organisations expertise together to help educate local businesses in the importance of linking both traditional offline methods of marketing communication with the ever-evolving world of digital marketing and social media. Over a couple of Coconut Lattes and a slice of cake, it soon became very clear that there were significant synergies between Look Local Magazine and Harris Consultancy and that their company ethos and objectives complemented one another well. As such, a new partnership has been formed and both Emma Penfold (Look Local) and Chris Harris (Harris Consultancy) are excited to be combining their wealth of experience and knowledge in Marketing, PR, Graphic Design, Branding, Social Media Management, Sales and Website Design to deliver a personal and fully compressive marketing package to both existing and new clients. By working with a Full-Service Marketing Agency who specialise in supporting the growth of small to medium businesses, start-up’s and sole traders, you can feel assured that every aspect of your business branding is consistent which in turn illustrates confidence to make you stand out from the crowd. Emma & Chris believe that the key to every successful business, coupled with building strong relationships, is branding. To market your business effectively you need to create a strong brand, which is instantly recognisable. Designing a logo is a good starting point as this can determine the path the rest of your branding follows. Your potential customers will encounter your marketing collateral long before you have the opportunity to dazzle them with your charm. Whether this initial contact has been made via your website, a business card, magazine advert or any other form of marketing communication, it is vital that the correct image is portrayed. If you are keen to come across as a professional and reputable business that the public would want to trust with their custom, it makes sense that your marketing material reflects this. Your website is another vital cog in the marketing wheel. It’s your online shop front, yet statistics show we have less than 15 seconds to capture a potential customer before they navigate to the next site! As times change, consumers are shopping and researching online, often navigating through different sites and sources, reading countless reviews before making a purchasing decision. It is therefore paramount to develop a secure, clean, responsive and optimised website that is eye-catching, easy to navigate and conversion friendly, ensuring that you convert at every opportunity.

Working with Look Local and Harris Consultancy We deliver a personal, passionate & tailored service to each and every one of our clients, big or small. We often hear of the challenges local businesses are facing, tight budgets, very little time, not quite enough hands and as such we firmly believe that there’s no merit in a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. Therefore, before recommending a marketing strategy we like to gain more of an insight into our clients company objectives. This enables us to offer the most competitive and innovative solution that we feel confident will achieve solid results. We are happy to work on one off projects but prefer to grow with our clients and be seen as an extension to their team. As such we have created pay-monthly packages, which encompass; Advertising, both in the publication and online Social Media Management to help you deliver unforgettable messages as well as build up a client base with targeted adverts. COUGHS, COLDS AND VIRUSES! How to help weaken the symptoms.

Although therapists at Thame Therapy Clinic don’t make claims to banish winter viruses with magic potions! They can offer nonsuppressive remedies which, if given early enough, can lessen the seriousness of a virus, and shorten its overall duration and weakening of our respiratory systems. Here, Andy Roscoe, explains more. As I write this article there is a slowly increasing health threat in the UK in the form of Coronavirus. The symptoms of this virus range from a mild cold or cough to more serious complications like pneumonia. Coming in the middle of Winter this virus just adds to the list of respiratory illnesses which happen at this time of year. Undoubtedly it also increases the worry factor. Therapies such as Acupuncture and Homeopathy offer a way of expelling pathogens without harming the host, this being the opposite of western medical approaches which work by suppressing symptoms. If used quickly and correctly, Acupuncture or Homeopathy can help in the short term by helping us get through viral attacks more quickly, and in the medium to long term by offering constitutional help to strengthen the overall energy (this usually is labelled as ‘strengthening the immune system’). As said above, there is no miracle cure for winter viruses – the traditional advice of go to bed, keep warm, and drink plenty of fluids still holds! But if you are worried by what you read and hear, or have a history of getting too many colds and coughs, then it is important to be active and do things to help yourself. Put simply this means eating well, resting well, taking appropriate exercise, and finding some nonsuppressive way of strengthening our immune system.

Choe your Complementary Healthcare erapist with Confidence... The government recommends that when people are looking for a health practitioner, they only consult a practitioner on an accredited register such as the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), which is the UK’s voluntary regulator for complementary health practitioners, of which I am registered with. It registers practitioners from 15 disciplines, including Bowen who have met UK-wide standards.

T

he CNHC was set up by the government with its sole purpose to protect the public. All registrants have agreed to be bound by the highest standards of conduct and are professionally trained and fully insured to practice. The General Medical Council guidance to doctors confirms that they are able to refer patients to practitioners on the CNHC register. You are therefore able to let your GP know, with confidence, that you are receiving remedial treatment from an accredited practitioner Private Healthcare Cash Plans: CNHC registration is recognised for reimbursement with a number of providers. This means clients may be able to claim for the cost of treatment when being treated by CNHC registered practitioners.

Bowen Therapy is a soft tissue remedial therapy that involves the therapist using fingers or thumbs to move over muscle, ligament, tendon and fascia in various parts of the body. this therapy can be effective to help relieve everyday stresses and revitalise the whole person. Each Bowen Therapy sessions varies according to the particular problems of the client. By focusing on the lower and mid back and legs, the upper back, shoulders and the neck, a sense of wellbeing can be achieved, helping relaxation, aiding sleep - helping to remove everyday stress and anxiety that can make us feel under - par or prevent us functioning to our optimum. You can check that I am registered by finding me on CNHC’s online register at www.cnhc.org.uk and visit me with confidence. Help Solve Murders in Midsomer over Dinner! Friday 20th March, Spread Eagle Hotel, Thame

Come and help Inspector Barnaby solve two more murders in ‘Midsomer County’! Mingle with the cast, act as witnesses, and decide on who’s guilty! And you get to do all of this while enjoying a delicious 3-course dinner! On Friday 20th March Thame Players will be performing their very own murder mystery play, A Deadly Midsomer Business, featuring Inspector Barnaby & Co, at the Spread Eagle Hotel, one of Thame’s most celebrated Midsomer Murders filming locations. The audience is invited to watch the play while enjoying a delicious three-course dinner and then decide who committed both the murders at the end. The action takes place at the annual shareholders’ party of prominent local company Cummins & Gowins. During the party it becomes clear that each of the guests has a guilty secret they’d prefer to keep concealed from the other guests. When the chairman of the company is murdered and his demise is soon followed by another murder, retired policeman DCI Barnaby is called in to investigate. The plot involves lots of cunning twists and turns that will keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Towards the end, the audience are asked to help DCI Barnaby solve the two murders by acting as judge and jury and deciding who the guilty parties are. Although, in keeping with the Midsomer theme, the plot is highly murderous, this will be an evening of light-hearted entertainment, with plenty of corny jokes and innuendo along the way, while you watch for clues to identify the culprits. Thame Players have performed their murder mystery plays at a wide range of locations previously, but this will be the first time they have performed at Thame’s Spread Eagle Hotel. Bryan Williams, the hotel’s general manager, said, ‘I’m delighted that Thame Players will be performing at the Spread Eagle, which is quite fitting as the hotel is a celebrated Midsomer Murders filming location. We invite Midsomer fans from near and far to come and sample our excellent food and wine on 20th March, while they help DCI Barnaby solve the murders’. Mike Rochford, director of A Deadly Midsomer Business, said, ‘Our murder mystery plays have been very popular over the years and we have had a lot of fun devising this one featuring DCI Barnaby. When you come to watch it, you will not just be experiencing fine acting by members of Thame Players, you will also be enjoying the hospitality of our leading historic hotel in Thame. Please come along and have fun while helping DCI Barnaby catch the murderers!’ Advance bookings for the 20th March show are going well, and it’s been decided to hold a second performance of A Deadly Midsomer Business on Friday 19th June, so there’s a choice of two shows.

Tickets £35.00 which includes 3-Course Meal & entertainment from Thame Players. Bar opens at 7:00pm with dinner being served from 8:00pm. The play is in two acts with a finale, the action takes place between the 3 courses. Tickets can be purchased by calling 01844 213661 or emailing events@spreadeaglethame.co.uk.

Cleaning and Caring for your Natural Stone Surface...

Granite and marble are natural stones whose unique colourings, markings and textures make beautiful,

lifetime lasting kitchen worktops and bathroom surfaces. They’re heat resistant, and with a little bit of care don’t stain or scratch easily, making these low maintenance materials perfect for tough environments, like busy family homes or businesses, especially when compared to wood or glass. And when you’re eventually finished with them, they can be recycled as hard core. But even the toughest cookies need some love and care, particularly when subject to the assaults of everyday life - excessive moisture, acidic spills and sharp objects.

Here are some tips to keeping your granite, marble and quartz worktops looking lovely for longer. Seal of Approval – Granite is relatively non-porous compared to it’s softer sister marble, who is at risk of staining if exposed to potent liquids like red wine. However all stone surfaces need to be sealed to boost their stain resisting properties. Check your supplier has sealed your worktop or bathroom properly before it’s fitted, and then reseal yourself every 1-2 years for marble, and every 5 for granite. We recommend Dry Treat’s Stain Proof Plus which can be bought on their online shop at www.drytreat.com. Don’t Scour – Scouring pads and sponges may lift layers of sealer leaving your worktop vulnerable to staining. They can also scratch the surface if used on softer stones like marble or limestone. Instead leave sticky stains to soak under soapy water. Too Harsh – Similarly to scouring pads, bleaches and other harsh cleaning chemicals can lift layers of seal from your marble or granite worktop. Instead use a mild dish soap or PH neutral surface cleaner with a dish cloth. Buff It – This one is not a necessity but for an extra shiny, just fitted look, buff your worktop once a week with a stone polish and soft cloth. Pledge have a good multi-surface polish, or Coulon Stone recommend Granite Clean and Sheen which you can buy via the website www.coulonstone.com.

SIMPLE CAR CARE TIPS For Spring...

As winter is slowly winding down and temperature start to rise an entirely different strategy for car care is required. Here are some simple tips to help you care for your vehicle as the seasons change... 1. Check your tyre pressures - especially important in the spring. As air temperatures get cooler during the winter, tire pressures decrease, which probably caused you to fill up your tires during the winter months. But as air gets warmer again in the spring, tire pressures can increase. If the pressure increases past your manufacturer specification (because you added air during the winter), it can seriously affect your car’s drivability and fuel economy. 2. Inspect your wiper blades - You’ll need those wipers for April Showers so be sure to check your wiper blades for any signs of cracking or wear. The wiper itself could wear dramatically over the winter due to ice buildup or other issues on your windshield. 3. Check under the hood - Do a thorough check to make sure your car’s engine made it through the winter without problems. Specifically, check belts and hoses to ensure the cold temperatures haven’t rendered them brittle or heavily worn. 4. Check Alignment and Suspension - Winter is known for being harsh on roads, and that in turn can be harsh on your vehicle. If you find yourself frequently traversing roads with huge potholes or rocks that have emerged from the asphalt, it could ruin your car’s alignment or damage suspension components.
