EDITORIAL EDITOR'S NOTE

T

hese are times when it's almost useless to watch weather forecasts as we know the weather can change any time anyway. The days swing back from very hot to very wet without any warning, leaving us all at the mercy of Mother Nature indeed like never before. But perhaps that’s just one way of looking at things. Perhaps, we can all make the best of the sudden changes in weather patterns, provided that as tourists, we choose the destination to be when they happen. Perhaps, knowing how the weather behaves erratically will help us create a more flexible, more imaginative itinerary for our travels. Perhaps, we can combine a bucket list that seriously takes into consideration what we can do in case the sun hides away and lets his Brother Rain take over his turf. Maybe the challenges will help us become even more adaptable travelers and be more tolerant on what we should expect during a trip. Perhaps, perhaps. But enough with the weather. Our July issue has nothing to do with the weather really except maybe remind us that the “Rains Retreat” season of Thailand has began, and that with the rains no matter how intermittent they might be, comes the inevitability of Bangkok’s chaotic traffic jams. July is more than just the start of the rainy season in Thailand though, and several festivals make traveling to the kingdom at this time a real blast. There’s the big Candle Festival in Ubon Ratchathani, the uber fun Phi Tha

Khon festival in Loei, among the bigger celebrations, and of course there are the exciting boat races that are expected to fill up the events' calendar soon. July is a good time to visit Hua Hin, Pranburi, and Prachuap Khiri Khan in one go, as the waters on the Gulf of Thailand become clearer, the mountain views look fresher than ever, the forests appear to be even greener, and the air becomes even more exhilarating than ever. There are vineyards to visit, golf courses to play in, theme parks to splash into, caves and mountains to explore, seafood to enjoy and savor, lovely bays and beaches to catch the early morning rays or the gorgeous colors of the sunsets – but without much of the big tourist crowds. Even if it rains during your watch – chances are you’ll be rewarded by a glimpse of a rainbow after the drizzle. And of course, you can still hop over to other great Thai destinations nearby after that. The month is also a good one to discover some of our neighboring countries – as ASEAN is being promoted as a single destination after all. We’re taking you to Borneo, Sri Lanka, and Singapore this time, for vastly different reasons of course. The goal is to showcase the variety of attractions in the region and the depth of diversity you are bound to experience as you travel along. Along with a host of regular sections that make Lookeast Magazine an interesting, informative, and persuasive read, our articles this month are “curated”

just for you. Eat, drink, shop, go sightseeing, do a spa, catch a concert or any live entertainment, play a game, sing, dance, live, love, enjoy! If you love travel, as we do, then we are sure that you will love this issue of Lookeast too. Here’s wishing you all the best travel experiences you can enjoy in Thailand and beyond – rain or shine. Safe travels everyone!

My favorite place: Chiang Mai Bring there: Don't bring much. The city has a great shopping scene. Must-do: It was a dream of mine to wash an elephant. For me that is a must-do! Go to one of the many elephant camps and work there for a day or more. Don’t do: The night bazaar. Most of the stuff there is very generic touristy items. Instead, go to Sunday walking street market and buy gifts from there. Must-see: Go for the huge lantern release, Yi Peng. It’s one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Must-buy: Handmade everything from Sunday walking market. Eat at: Dada Kafé, a great small place in the old town. Everything is good there! Drink at: When you miss the West. just go to Zoe in Yellow, a great place to have drinks with like-minded travelers. Sleep at: If you want to be away from the tourist area and stay in the hippest part of town, go for the Nimmanhaemin area. There are many boutique hotels and hostels there.

My favorite place: Chiang Mai Bring there: Comfortable shoes and sandals for all the walking you'll do. Must-do: Rent a motorbike and take a week to drive the majestic Mae Hong Son Loop. Don’t do: Loi Kroh Road or the Night Bazaar, which are huge, inauthentic tourist traps. Must-see: Sport Day festivities at Chiang Mai University—one of the most amazing and vibrant displays of ingenuity and creativity. Must-buy: A week-long Thai massage course at ITM. Learn how to give Thai massage while making lots of friends! What’s not to like? Eat at: Burmese Restaurant and Library for their out-of-this-world tamarind leaf salad. Drink at: Northgate Jazz Co-op, one of the best places for live jazz, hanging out, and a cold Singha beer. Sleep at: The Dhara Dhevi Chiang Mai, to literally feel like Thai royalty for a night.

My favorite place: Pakarang Bay, Samed Island, Rayong Bring there: Just you and you Must-do: Dinner at the restaurant by the bay Must-see: Sunset from the top of the hill Must-buy: Nothing really Eat at: Restaurant by the bay at Nimmanoradee Resort. The food is tasty and very delicious. I didn’t expect much at first since this is an island not on the mainland but every dish tastes so good to my surprise, and the price is very reasonable, not expensive. Drink at: Restaurant by the bay at Nimmanoradee Resort. I really enjoyed sitting, drinking, and eating here while watching the beautiful Pakarang Bay view. Sleep at: Nimmanoradee Resort -- very private atmosphere since it is located at the very end of Koh Samed. One can really relax and enjoy the beauty of nature here; I will come back here again for sure.

FINDING PARADISE Add Hua Hin, Pranburi, and Prachuap Khiri Khan to your bucket list of great seaside escapes in Thailand, if you still haven’t! by The Lookeast Team

o you already know about several of Thailand’s top holiday destinations. Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, and Pattaya – each is a paradise in each’s own right. But have you been to Hua Hin, Pranburi, and Prachuab Khiri Khan yet? Hua Hin of course, is already quite wellknown in the international tourism circles. But Pranburi and Prachuap? Now, these are the kind of new emerging destinations that you might want to include in your next Thailand holiday escape. Bundle them together and you might get three slices of Thailand as a tropical paradise. All the three towns are under the administrative umbrella of one province, Prachuab Khiri Khan. All three are seaside resorts bursting with attractions, both manmade and natural. And while Hua Hin has made an early headway among the three destinations being the favorite summer retreat of the Thai Royal Family since the 1920s, today all three

of them are collectively rising up to their historic tourism fortunes in each their own way. So, again, don’t just confine your visit to the greater Hua Hin area but rather, make a bucket list trip that combines a visit to all the three seaside resorts for a more rewarding, enjoyable journey.

HUA HIN

Start your trip in Hua Hin, located just three-hours or so from Bangkok. A favorite weekend getaway of many travel savvy Thais and expats because of its old world ambiance and a wonderful cultural mix of local, Asian, and Western tourists, it has become a classic hideaway by the sea. Considered as the kingdom’s first beach resort, it was discovered by Thai King Rama VII in the 1920s. The king subsequently built a palace here so he could fully enjoy the charm of area. The name of the palace? Klai Kangwon Palace (“Far from Worries”), which pretty much sums up the Hua Hin area to a tee.

WHY GO Hua Hin has a laidback, friendly seaside atmosphere. Coupled this with good infrastructure, excellent facilities, beautiful resorts, amazing golf courses, and a constantly growing list of fascinating attractions such as floating markets, shopping venues, and themed parks, and you have a winning resort indeed. Being a royal beach resort, cabarets, discos, and other nightspots are more regulated here and somewhat limited than normal. Visitors can expect to enjoy a restful quality time surrounded by sand, sun, sea -- and abundant fresh seafood. WHAT TO DO Hua Hin has a stunning 5km (3-mile) beach, and in the outskirts, lovely waterfalls, lush limestone mountains and plenty of leisure activities. It is world renowned as a superb place to rejuvenate being home to several internationally renowned spas. Hua Hin is also one of Thailand's

Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin

premier golfing destinations, with eight world-class courses and several driving ranges in the nearby areas. Additionally, fishing, hiking, cooking classes, horseback riding, diving, and snorkeling are among the other options for those with a more active disposition. With two night-markets, a local market, and numerous boutique stores, Hua Hin is also an excellent place to shop for locally produced handicrafts, fabrics, souvenirs, and food products. And that’s just for starters. WHAT TO SEE Popular destinations here include Pa-La-U Waterfall, a 15-tier feature in the jungle 60km from town; Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand's largest reserve, stretching to the Burmese border; and Sam Roi Yod National Park, a landscape of limestone peaks, which is actually in the Pranburi area. In Hua Hin proper itself, there is Khao Takiab, a hill at the end of Hua Hin beach sprinkled with Buddhist shrines and well worth climbing for the panoramic view. But there’s more: Hua Hin Hills Vineyard, home of Monsoon Valley wines, a superb restaurant, with

stunning views of the wine lands and elephant rides among the vines; Vana Nava, the big waterpark inside the town, among them. EAT & DRINK The central market sells fresh fruit and fish to locals as it’s been done for ages. The night market is the ideal place to sample street food cooked fast and fresh. International travelers visit Hua Hin for the coastline and wonderful resorts and hotels, but the locals arrive for the food, with the town's fishing fleet delivering baskets of prawns and fish every day, helping the town maintain its reputation as one of Thailand's top seafood spots. Most restaurants and eateries especially those in the 5-star resorts are geared toward high-end gourmet level, but there are all kinds of cuisine available for all kinds of food lover – although we can’t mention them all in all fairness. By the way, if you’re curious about where the Thais are going for great daytime street food, try going to Hua Hin 51, just a few walks toward the beach. SLEEP Awesome 5-star hotels and resorts are now the norm, such as Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin, Hyatt Regency Hua Hin, Hilton Hua Hin, Sheraton Hua Hin, InterContinental Hua Hin, Marriott Hua Hin, Anantara Hua Hin, Evason Six Senses Hua Hin and Dusit Thani Hua Hin, not to mention some hot new names in resorts such as Putahracsa, V Villas Hua Hin, Asara, Radisson Hua Hin, Sofitel So Hua Hin, and Veranda, among the many others, which beckon to all kinds of holidays: romantic escapades, weddings, family retreats, weekend getaways, or incentive travels. There’s so much

to choose by way of accommodation to fit a traveler’s requirement for a perfect stay. The town is also home to Chiva-Som, one of the world’s leading health resorts, although it is by no means the only place to visit for a fabulous spa indulgence. Putahracsa Hua Hin is a stylish boutique resort that features quality, natural design elements with all the comforts of state of the art urban living. Designed to recreate the feel of a posh beach residence, all rooms and villas reflect the owner’s personal touch, but also incorporates the traditions of Hua Hin, blending them with very contemporary design. in short, a great resort to relax and just be yourself.

TRAVEL TIPS

How to get to Hua Hin – Bus services are available on an hourly basis from the Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai Bus Terminal, Pinklao) from 4 a.m.10:20 p.m. Prior reservations are required to secure seats, and tickets have to be booked in person. Ticket costs about Bt160. Minibuses, which ply the route every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., are much faster than buses but have a limited seating capacity (11-12 seats). Minibuses start from Ratchawitee Hospital near Victory Monument in Bangkok. Ticket costs THB 200. You can also flag down a cab or approach a travel agency either directly or through your hotel, to hire a cab. You can also rent a car and drive all the way to Hua Hin or try the safer, more comfortable way -- by train from Hua Lumpong Railway Station.

It’s actually a wonder how Pranburi has remained a secret for a long time. While its neighboring Hua Hin (just 30km south) has continued to grown in stature as a tourism favorite, this quiet beach resort south remained in slumber until recently, when enterprising hotel operators and business owners realized that the area has a big potential given its unspoiled pristine beach. It is also a springboard to nearby Sam Roi Yod National Park. Pranburi has a number of quiet and beautiful stretches of beach that are slowly seeing the development of a number of mid-range and up-scale hotels and resorts. It is becoming popular among those who are looking for a quiet alternative to Hua Hin, particularly to those who wish to combine their beach time with day trips in the national park.

22

LOOKEAST | TRAVEL

WHY GO Peace and tranquility. Relaxation and serendipity. There is more to Pranburi than meets the eye. Pranburi's quiet, pristine beaches are far nicer than those in Hua Hin and Cha-am in terms of cleanliness, development, and view. If beach is important to you and you want to go somewhere relaxing, pick Pranburi over Cha-am. It's worth the extra drive from Bangkok. The destination is perfect for family outings, couples and lovers’ retreats, and exclusive bonding time with friends and colleagues, and without the distraction of nightlife or too much crowd. WHAT TO DO In addition to pleasantly relatively undeveloped beaches, other attractions highlight the beauty of the area’s natural

EAT & DRINK Most restaurants in the area serve a variety of cuisines. Most guesthouse and resorts have restaurants that serve both and in good quality. A few standalone foods and drink shops have also sprung up lately as the tourist numbers begin to grow, especially on long weekends. There’s a new seafood restaurant on the main stretch that should be great

for those in search of local dining while enjoying great sea-views and breeze. SLEEP A number of outstanding hotels and resorts now operate in Pranburi. There are five-star destination resorts, such as Aleenta Resort Huan Hin-Pranburi, Villa Maroc, and Sheraton Resort Pranburi. And while there seem to be an impending hotel construction boom coming up, there are also excellent accommodation options for those looking for a relaxing beach holiday on a more modest budget – there is really an interesting mix of very high end chic resorts on the beach and some middle-of-the-road, family oriented resorts farther south the coast. Most resorts have shuttle service to and from Hua Hin, which is only 30 minutes away.

surroundings, including Sam Roi Yod National Park and Pranburi Forest Park.
Pranburi Forest Park is located along a one-kilometer long pristine beach that is fringed by pine trees and a mangrove forest that grows around a river passing from the nearby forests into the sea. There are nature trails that are perfect for bird watching. Indeed, there are innumerable activities to keep you busy and entertained.

TRAVEL TIPS

How to get to Pranburi -- Take one of the daily trains from Hua Lumpong Station in Bangkok then get a taxi or car to Pranburi. Or, you can drive directly from Bangkok or take one of the public and private buses from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal. There are also private mini buses that make the trip from Bangkok to Pranburi on a daily basis. These are run by various companies, much like airport shuttles, and can be arranged with your hotel or resort. JULY 2016 | 23

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN

The provincial capital of Prachuap Khiri Khan is a fishing port with a superb location that is highlighted by beautiful curving bays among steep mountain outcrops. Just about 100km south from Hua Hin, it is a destination that has long been underrated, but those who have been to the area rave about the beautiful beaches, the bays and coves, and the less touristy lifestyle, and the away-fromthe-crowds atmosphere, which makes it all the more alluring to tourists tired of the overcrowded enclaves. WHY GO Hua Hin often gets the fanfare, but if you can look beyond

WHAT TO SEE Prachuap Khiri Khan is studded with beaches, caves, mountains, and forests – and the three bays: Noi, Pachuca, and Ao Manao, are just attractive! WHAT TO DO There is something for everyone here, if they are willing

to find out and explore more. Of course it cannot be compared to the likes of the well-established Hua Hin, but Prachuap Khiri Khan has many tourist activities for visitors to participate in and enjoy, particularly the natural and cultural attractions to visit. Many people come here to relax and get away – and very few places could be more perfect for those sort of things. EAT & DRINK Outside of the restaurants found in the resorts, dining options in Prachup Khiri Khan are somewhat limited but there are restaurants serving fresh seafood along the beach and two markets that

sell delectable Thai food. There are some good seafood restaurants too – some delectable fare at the cheapest of prices. SLEEP Although not a major center for tourism yet, Prachuap Khiri Khan has a variety of accommodation options including many beach resorts that cater to families and couples. There is a place called Bangnangrom Guesthouse, which is modest, homey, comfortable, and excellently located. The guesthouse is just a stone’s throw away from the bay, and you can carry your morning cup of coffee or evening glass of wine, and sip them there!

TRAVEL TIPS

How to get to Prachuap Khiri Khan -- Prachuap Kiri Khan is on the main southern railway line from Bangkok, and train makes for by far the best way to arrive -- the fourand-a-half- to six-hour journey is a pleasant one, and Prachuap's train station is centrally located, making for an easy transfer to your accommodation. Nine trains arrive daily from Bangkok and arriving in Prachuap from mid-day until early morning. On the return leg, trains to Bangkok leave Prachuap Kiri Khan mostly in the late evening and early morning, though there is one mid-afternoon departure that arrives in Bangkok in the evening.
Hua Hin is around an hour's ride away, with a third class seat costing as little as THB 49 while Chumphon, the jumping off point for the islands of Koh Tao, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Samui, is two to three hours and a THB 78 second-class seat away Minivans leave from several spots around Prachuap Kiri Khan, including outside the Intila Hotel opposite the night market, and just around the corner from the City Shrine. They run every half an hour to Bangkok, via Hua Hin, Cha Am, and Mae Khlong in Samut Songkhram province. Bigger buses for Bangkok depart from opposite the 7-11 on Phitak Chat, around the corner from the Yuttichai Hotel, take four to five hours and run between 6 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.

WHERE SEA AND MOUNTAIN MEET Wildlife, walking trails, caves, and more to explore – but even without the strenuous activities, Khao Sam Roi Yot is always well worth a visit by Dave Stamboulis

W

hile Thailand is filled with an array of beautiful natural attractions, one of the easiest to get to from Bangkok for a short weekend break is the magical Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park. Located off the coast of Pranburi, just south of Hua Hin, the park feels far more isolated and secluded than one would expect from an outdoor escape so close to both Bangkok and Hua Hin and offers a range of natural wonders, from white sand beaches, excellent mountain hiking trails, phenomenal

bird life, and even a surreal throne room set inside a natural cave inside of a mountain! Khao Sam Roi Yot means “300 peaks,” which aptly describes the hundreds of rugged karst limestone pinnacles that rise up like small pyramids above the Gulf of Thailand. Legend has it that a Chinese junk sunk here, with 300 sailors each clinging to a small island, which later morphed into individual mountains. While many of the jungle clad peaks can only be admired from the ground, there are trails up some

of them, such as the climb up Khao Daeng mountain, where a stunning viewpoint gives fabulous panoramas of the surrounding terrain, both peaks and the shimmering sea. Wildlife is a big draw here, especially birds. The park is famed among ornithologists due to its position on an East Asian-Australian flyway for migrating birds. Between November and March over 300 species of birds, many of them migrating from Siberia and Europe, stopover in the mudflats and marshes of Sam Roi Yot. There is a fantastic

wetlands area of the park known as Thung Sam Roi Yot, where wooden walkways meander around marshlands, where one can spot purple herons, colorful kingfishers, and plenty of other birdlife. Other wildlife can also be spotted in the park. There is serow (a type of goat-antelope) up on the limestone crags, and plenty of dusky langurs and long-tailed macaques that roam about in the forest and around the park headquarters and campsites. Additionally, Irrawaddy dolphins can occasionally be seen off the coast.

There are also several caves to explore throughout the national park but the Phraya Nakhon Cave is the most special, one of the major reasons for coming here, and probably the most photographed cave in Thailand. Getting to the cave involves a 20-=minute climb up over a mountain, from where one descends into a huge cavern. The cave is actually composed of two large sinkholes whose roofs have collapsed, and in the early morning, light filters in from the openings and creates a dramatic and surreal

TRAVEL DAYTRIPS

effect on the surroundings. The cave was named for its discoverer: a lord from Nakhon Sri Thammarat named Phraya Nakhon who wandered into it some 200 years ago after being shipwrecked in a violent storm. What makes the cave so interesting is that there is a giant throne pavilion with a four gabled roof sitting in the middle of it, which is also illuminated by the fantastic light. The pavilion was constructed for the visit of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1890, and has since been visited by numerous dignitaries, including twice by King Bhumibol. Even without all the strenuous activity, Khao Sam Roi Yot is well worth a visit. There are a couple of pleasant white sand beaches in the park, Sam Phraya and Laem Sala, the latter of which can only be reached via a short longtail-boat ride or else a quick 20-minutes walk over a small headland. The National Park runs bungalow and tent operations here, along with a small restaurant, making

28

it an excellent spot to escape the crowds, spend the night, and be up early to check out the cave. For those intent on hanging out on the beach, local fishermen wander through the surf with their fishing nets each morning, and the views on the trail just above the beach are fabulous, looking out to sea and taking in one of this area of Thailand’s most pristine stretches of ocean and coast.

Travel Tips

Khao Sam Roi Yot is easily accessed by vehicle from Pranburi, which is about 25km to the northwest. While the roads into the park are excellent, there is minimal public transportation in the park itself other than hiring a private taxi or motorcycle, so it’s best to have your own vehicle. Additionally, the park is divided between its coastal and inland sections so if you want to cover them all, you’ll need your own wheels. For those who don’t want to camp or stay at the National Park bungalows, there are some nice seaside lodges just 10-15 minutes drive from the park’s northern end, but it’s far more atmospheric to camp along the beach itself. The park service rents out tents, as well as having a few indoor options in bungalows just off the beach, and there is one restaurant here to ensure nobody goes hungry. For more details, check with the park (www.dnp.go.th/parkreserve/nationalpark.asp?lg=2).

SIPADAN IN THE DEEP The crown jewel of Southeast Asian diving beckons with its epic marine life of over 3,000 species of fish and coral but keeps its marine environment firmly intact as a protected park area by Dave Stamboulis

T

All photos by Dave Stamboulis

ravelers to Thailand often ask me where to go diving on their vacation to Southeast Asia, usually expecting to hear recommendations for Koh Tao or perhaps some other smaller islands off the coast of Trang. While these places may have their merits, they pale significantly when placed against the islands of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo, with the islet of Sipadan leading the charge. Sipadan gets listed with Pulau, the Galapagos, the Red Sea, and a few other spots as one of the world’s premier diving destinations. Its marine life is epic, with over 3,000 species of fish and coral, and because it is a protected park area, its marine environment is firmly intact. Famed undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau once said of the island, “I have seen other places like Sipadan 45 years ago. Now we

32

LOOKEAST | TRAVEL

have found again an untouched piece of art.” Sipadan, and its accompanying phenomenal dive islands, Mabul and Kapalai, are located out in the Celebes Sea, off the coast of eastern Sabah. While Borneo often conjures up images of a wild and remote jungle, the Malaysian sides of Borneo are far from this and getting to Sipadan these days is actually quite easy. From Kuala Lumpur, daily flights come in to Tawau, on Sabah’s east coast from where it is a short drive to Semporna, a rather grubby port town filled with dive operators and tourist services. Fast boats can reach the islands from here in around an hour, and visitors have the option of either doing day dives from Seporna (which is what the budget travelers or those pressed for time do), or else sleeping on Mabul or

Kapalai islands, diving both there and over on Sipadan. This is a far more preferable option. Sipadan used to have resorts on it but the Malaysian government has forbidden any overnighting for over a decade now, keeping the island as pristine as possible, and trying to preserve the marine ecosystem for future generations. Only about 12 hectares around and covered in dense rain forest, the isle does have a lovely white sand beach, but the main attractions on Sipadan lie off the shore, where a volcanic wall plunges 2,000 feet down into the sea, covered in coral and home to thousands of fish. Highlights of Sipadan dives include the regular spotting of tornado formations of barracudas, scalloped hammerhead and whale sharks, big-eye trevallies, manta and eagle rays, schools of humphead parrotfishes, and one of the world’s largest concentrations of Hawksbill and green turtles. Even snorkeling here is like being in a living aquarium, with tunnels of colorful fish surrounding swimmers up on the surface of the water. Sipadan is well managed environmentally and only 120 permits are given out per day to dive here. Diving is only allowed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the permits are distributed between the dozen dive operators, which manage the resorts on Mabul, Kapalai, and in Semporna. This does require travellers to do a bit of advance planning, but this doesn’t differ too vastly from a normal vacation. During the high season between May and October, the resorts

fill up, and most people booking a room will also book a few days of diving at the same time. Even for non-divers, the area is fantastic. Kapalai island has one of the region’s most beautiful resorts, with wooden chalets built on stilts set over turquoise water, home to abundant macro marine life, pretty much accessible right from the deck of your room. Over at Mabul Island, there is a more budget friendly array of accommodation. Most of the midrange options can be found here, and there are even budget homestays available -- in the Badjao fishing village. Mabul is home to a large population of refugee Badjao sea gypsies, most of whom have fled strife in the Sulu Sea of Southern Philippines. The Badjaos can be seen going out to fish in their dugout canoes, and lend a bit of a human element to this deep-sea paradise. There is even a bit of the wacky to be found out in the midst of all this beautiful water. A former oilrig platform has been recycled to its present use as a mid-range divers’ resort. Sitting just off the coast of Mabul, Sea Adventures Dive Resort offers up fairly spartan rooms and rather gritty industrial charm, but makes up for it with coral reefs right below the rig. The owners of the resort bought the oldrig in Singapore and had it towed to Borneo. Borneo and Malaysia seem to often fall off the Southeast Asian travel circuit, but if you are looking for phenomenal diving and unscathed tropical island bliss, better start making your plans now.

Travel Tips Both Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia have daily flights to Tawau, the closest jumping off point for Sipadan, Mabul, and Kapalai. Minivans do the trip from Tawau to Semporna in just under an hour. Semporna has offices for all the dive operators and resorts in the area, as well as plentiful accommodation and tourist services. Speedboats go to Mabul and Kapalai from here in around one hour. Accommodations: On Kapalai, the SipadanKapalai Resort (www.sipadan-kapalai.com) is one of the most gorgeous spots in the area. On Mabul, the Mabul Water Bungalows (www. mabulwaterbungalows.com/en/) is the most luxurious resort for miles. 6 DAYS

IN SRI LANKA Surfing, coconuts, monkeys, and sunsets – this small island nation south of India is bustling big with energy, culture, and beauty by Madi Ross It wasn’t my first time visiting the tropics but it was the first time I’ve felt such energy from the land and a true sense of wilderness.

I

started off my journey in Hikkaduwa, a southern coastal town approximately 98km from Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo. Without knowing anything about the area, I used Airbnb to book a room at the Banana Leaf Apartments. This guest home is hidden away in the jungle next to a cinnamon plantation. Although quiet and secluded, it’s only a 5-minute tuk tuk (a three-wheeled motorized vehicle used as a taxi) ride from the main road and the beach. The first thing I noticed was the raw nature and wildlife. It wasn’t my first time visiting the tropics but it was the first time I’ve felt such energy from the land and a true sense of wilderness. The air was never quiet. From birds chirping and unidentifiable animals making their calls, to the rustles of the giant monitor lizard that ran past me in the garden. This place is beautifully wild. Hikkaduwa beach is absolutely serene. I expected it to be full of tourists, as most island beaches tend to be, but it surprisingly wasn’t. It doesn’t feel commercialized in any way. The beach is lined with small local restaurants as well as charming hotels and bungalows. The people are extremely nice and welcoming with that surfer island vibe. The east side of the water on the beach is perfect to swim in, if you like duck diving under small waves like I do. I caught the

34

LOOKEAST | TRAVEL

sunset further down the beach later that evening which was absolutely breathtaking. The sky became a deep orange and among it were surfers catching their sundown waves. I sat back, taking it all in while sipping a king coconut.

GALLE

My next stop was Galle, a city on the southwest tip of the Island that was once colonized by the Dutch. I stayed at the monumental Galle Fort, in a beautiful colonial villa called Lighthouse 41. This place was nothing like I’d ever seen. I felt like I was in a different country compared to the day before. The Dutch built

Galle Fort in the 17th century, and its distinct European infrastructure is definitely a must-see. The cobble stone roads, colonial homes, and catholic churches all mixed in with a few tuk tuks driving along and women in colorful sari’s walking by. It felt as though I’d traveled back in time Aside from the historical wonders, I spent some time surfing at Deveta Beach. This is a great beach for surfing, and only a 5-minute ride from the fort. The waves are perfect in size and the people are smiling as usual; it wasn’t crowded either. There’s a surf school on the beach as well, with friendly local instructors for hire. If you’re not in need of a surf lesson, boards are available for rent for about US$5 per hour. I surfed for two days in a row and it was one of the nicest surf breaks. A lot has to do with the fact that it wasn’t overcrowded like most surf spots. It was great to just be in the warm water chilling out and catching the waves.

concept there is no air conditioning and birds and butterflies among with other playful critters were free to fly in and out. The bedrooms have sliding glass doors, which I kept closed, but the living room was recommended to be kept open. It was astonishing really how immersed in nature I was. Geckos, praying mantises, woodpeckers, and frogs were only a few of the creatures I encountered. It was enlightening to live as a guest among others in the jungle, and not

the other way around. Although in the hills, I still managed to stumble upon yet another beach. Jungle beach, that is. Jungle Beach is a secluded lagoon where ocean meets jungle. It wasn’t too far from the tree house, either. It’s a 10-minute hike down a dirt path through slippery slopes and overgrown trees. Once I reached the bottom, white sand and friendly local beach dogs greeted me. The beach was actually the most populated with tourists of all the beaches I went to. This was surprising as it was the most secluded one so far. Nonetheless, it was beautiful and the water was calm without waves. There’s also a local restaurant on the beach, so I went for lunch and spent a couple of hours relaxing with a few swims in between. All in all, the Sri Lankan experience was unforgettable. In six days I have explored about five percent of the island, which was full of culture and beauty. This country has a lot to offer; I look forward to my next visit and for what the rest of the island has to offer.

(Editor’s Note: Follow Madi Ross @madiross @airbnb @bananaleafhika @srilanka @forlovelemons @gypsea_swimwear)

My last stop was Unawatuna. Now this place was cool. I had the option of staying at a luxurious villa again but decided on something a bit different. A treehouse. Yes, that’s right, a tree house in the hills. Again, I used Airbnb, and found an amazing treehouse with an open living concept. This two level treehouse was made of glass, with large balconies surrounding the perimeter. When I arrived there were monkeys everywhere! At that moment I began to realize how different this stay was going to be. Since it’s an open living

views, along with the absolute privacy and privilege so many of us desire. Each of the villas boasts a unique, distinctive character and full range of personalized facilities and services. Our villa, Villa Seangootsa, is certainly one of the nicest in the estate. Villa Seangoosta features five bedrooms, an infinity pool, a large living room, a generous indoor and outdoor space, a sala, an outdoor dining with BBQ, an indoor dining space and a separate kitchen, a pool table, and a cozy home theatre room. These are complemented by stylish, comfortable furnishings and top-ofthe-line home technology so if you are looking for an uber-luxe holiday home in Phuket, this one’s for you indeed. The master bedroom has its own dipping pool that is almost like a Jacuzzi, and you get to enjoy an unobstructed view of Kamala Bay anytime.

Each villa boasts its own team who has been trained to be efficient yet unobtrusive. Service is gracious, warm, and friendly and there’s always a smile when you see them. There is a fulltime chef – your personal chef -- who stays at the villa, as well as a fulltime housekeeper, to make sure your needs are met when you need them. Basically, you can ask the chef to cook whatever you want – just give him a day in advance so he can go to the market to buy the ingredients and get what he needs to cook them. The food is excellent of course – very much done in a 5-star way, whether Thai or international meals. At the end of your stay, you just have to pay for the ingredients and give the chef a service, as these are not included in the room prices. Oh, a full concierge service is available for guests looking to explore the many nearby recreation, shopping, dining, and entertainment options. The entire villa, built like a luxury residence, is well managed and managed, and it is easy to see the care and attention that go into it day by day. We were told that the owner, an architect, built this villa for his own personal use, renting it only when he’s not there. One thing that you will not fail to notice is the glass floor on one section of the pool, underneath of which is a hallway that goes to the master bedroom. This feature is actually so cool, because when you look up, you can see people swimming above. The sunset view from the swimming is also very dramatic! Overall, the location is excellent.

It is very quiet – away from the prying eyes of the crowd so you can enjoy all the privacy and exclusivity you need. The place is definitely suitable for celebrities and in fact, American R&B icon Rihanna recently stayed here and twitted how gorgeous it was on her Twitter and Instagram accounts. Whether for a romantic getaway, a family vacation, a private celebration or corporate retreat, each villa on the Samsara Estate offer the ultimate exclusive accommodation in one of Phuket’s most appealing and convenient locations. But Villa Seangootsa is a dream villa – and we wouldn't mind staying there again and again when in Phuket.

Samsara is a dream resort you wouldn't mind staying in again and again when you are in Phuket.

ESCAPE AND INSPIRATION A hideaway not only to relax and de-stress but also to unleash your inspiration -- Ndol Streamside Thai Villas in Saraburi just might be what you need! by Percy Roxas

olchai Boonyaratavej, a Thai branding guru, made his mark by excelling in various trades. Not surprisingly thus, he wants his foray in the hotel scene to be more than just about business. “The resort is me, this is what I am,” says Dolchai, owner and designer of Ndol Streamside Thai Villas in Saraburi. He calls the resort more than just a resort hideaway. “This is a holiday escape that fills you with fantastic stories,” he says. Ndol Streamside Thai Villas (Tel: 036 342 4550), located in Muek Lek just an hour and a half from

Bangkok, grew out of Dolchai’s desire to preserve Thai art and culture while sharing a special sanctuary with guests. In fact, he built it as a holiday home for his family. But as more and more people wanted to experience his Saraburi sanctuary, he decided to expand it and convert it into a real resort. Dolchai is also an architect, by the way. “The idea is to build a place where all visitors will feel like they are special guests in my home,” says Dolchai. “Thus, while the resort strives to keep its service and facilities up to par with international standards, we were determined to

keep our unique Thainess intact all throughout.” The resort is very Thai indeed -- centered as it is on the traditional teak houses that were brought to its present location from Central Thailand. But is also very international, even if the beautifully furnished rooms and common areas showcase a rich and varied collection of Thai arts and Asian antiques amassed by Dolchai over the years. “The breathtaking array of artifacts reflects an astounding degree of attention to detail and individuality,” he states the obvious. “In a way, Ndol links Thailand’s

handed down from the Thai royal courts of yore. The main restaurant embraces all-day breeze and features artifacts, antiques, and old Siamese paintings as décor as well. And so does the three other F&B options: Summer Lounge, Amber Bar, and Café Tara. There’s a spa as well, featuring original products courtesy of Dolchai’s other personal interests., and a dedicated gym for those who cannot let go of their fitness routine even on a holiday. We thought the resort could use a little bit more international-style operational management to further elevate its service to world-class the quality. But as it is, there’s really nothing much to complain about. After all, if you’re staying at Ndol Streamside Thai Villas, you’re probably there for the peace and privacy more than anything else and you are bound to get them for sure. Getting your inspiration unleashed after all the available indulgence and pampering is simply a totally, utterly welcome, desirable bonus. Because, indeed, who wouldn't want that?

There is a garden -- with its water features, lotus ponds, orchids, and lush foliage all – that is a perfect

Trang -- In partnership with the Marine National Park Diversion Center Trang, Anantara Si Kao allows guests to take part in regenerating the fragile coastal ecosystem and rebuilding the prime feeding ground for endangered dugongs by planting its main food source - sea grass. Sea grass plays a significant role in the ecosystem and also serves to protect and enhance the lives of coastal communities. Though of great importance to the ecosystem, sea grass meadows are often forgotten in the conservation debate. Every hour across the globe, an area of sea grass the size of two football pitches is lost; a rate of loss that is equal to that occurring in tropical rainforests and on coral reefs, yet receiving a fraction of the attention. Anantara Si Kao Resort is committed to changing this and created the Sea Grass Planting CSR Project to help educate guests, restore and conserve sea grass beds, ensuring that marine life like the endangered dugong can continue to thrive in their natural habitat in the south of Thailand.

HOTELS CHECKING IN

2 MUST-STAY HOTELS IN KRABI Crown Lanta Resort, Aonang Cliff Beach offer great island holiday comforts, privacy, and fun by Rich Kanttita

Two holiday homes to enhance your stay in Koh Lanta and Aonang.

K

rabi is home to many famous beaches and islands. We recently made an escape to one of Krabi’s less touristic island, Koh Lanta, before returning to the wilder side at Aonang Beach. This untouched, reserved island showcases a different side of the island life. Larger in size than most islands in Krabi but calmer in spirit Koh Lanta offers a glimpse of simple lifestyle of the local Muslim community. The unique architecture of the island’s houses and buildings is distinct to those of the capital in the mainland but nevertheless gives a vibrant impression with its color. Crown Lanta Resort, our holiday home in Koh Lanta, is just about two hours away from the Krabi Airport. The island recently built a connecting bridge between the two islands of Koh Lanta making it easier to move around, as previously, the ferries were the only routes of transportation. We had a taste of the resort’s amazing services as soon as the van picked us up from the airport to bring us to the resort.

LOOKEAST | HOTELS

The resort stretches 22 hectares over the top edge of Koh Lanta. It overlooks the endless blue and has a private beach, which is home to some of the largest crabs one can see up close. The resort is separated into six different areas – Gazebo Deluxe Garden, Pool, Elegance Deluxe, Ocean Sunset Villa, Private Pool Villa and Grand Villa. Each offers different atmosphere and views of the island. But nothing beats visiting the Reggae Bar during sunset to soak in the last bits of the sun while enjoying the music, tapas dish, and a cocktail. Reggae Bar offers a great view of the beach. Sitting on top of the large rocks during weekend nights, guests can enjoy the light show, which are also performed at the dinner buffet at The Cliff restaurant. As the resort’s landscapes are rough to walk around, guests can easily call operator for a hotel-car pick up service to avoid climbing up and down hill. With the friendliest and service-minded staff members, Crown Lanta made it hard to say goodbye. Moving closer to the mainland in Krabi later, we visited Aonang

Cliff Beach Resort, the sister hotel of Crown Lanta, which recently underwent an upgrade and now offers better views and better facilities. More modern, luxurious, and minimalistic, the new Aonang Cliff Beach sets a different tone from the entrance and its original accommodations. Staying at the Panoramic Suite made sure we had not only an amazing view but also enjoy the glass walls bathroom’s chic and luxurious feel because taking your eyes away from the sea view would be a shame. Retreat outside at the balcony and enjoy the private bathtub that overlooks the beach and islands while sipping a bubbly or visit the incredible infinity pool that is the hotel’s highlight. Aonang Beach, because it’s on the mainland, offers more activities especially as far as the nightlife is concerned. The hotel offers a good range of seafood and Thai-WesternChinese dishes at their Seafood Dinner Buffet and drinks right in front of the hotel before discovering the wilder side of the city.

HOTELS ASK THE CONCIERGE

EVERYTHING IS POSSIBE FOR GUESTS ‘I always customize service to suit our individual guests while maintaining the world-renowned InterContinental service culture and standards’ -- Khun Nissara by Earth Saiswang

InterContinental Bangkok

M

any of us think of the concierge as just somebody who stands right by at the concierge desk most of the time, waiting to be able do something for hotel guests. Seems dull at first glance, but in fact, their job can be fun and interesting too, as most concierges will tell you. “Everyday is full of surprises, and these surprises make our job exciting,” says Nissara Saithong, who’s been concierge officer at the InterContinental Bangkok for one year now. What kind of surprises? Well, Nissara recalls how one time she ended up searching for some 30 kilos of deep-fried grasshopper for a guest. At another time, one guest approached her and told her that he wanted to help her because she has a child spirit (Gumarn-Thong) that is following her all the time. There are so many stories to tell in fact, Nissara says, "and as years go by, the more these stories fill you up – enough to last a lifetime." While daily tasks can be fairly routine – concierges keep themselves up-to-date by reading current events and knowing what’s happening in town, she adds. "We actually provide lots of service that might be labeled as over and above the call of duty already. We have to customize our service that suit individual guests while maintaining the hotel’s standard of service and culture,” she explains. No wonder, you’ll see concierges – even the most educated of them like her – staying in their jobs for years. Many do not even want to change jobs; Nissara for one. The Suphanburi-born Nissara is an art history major from Silpakorn University. In a previous life, she dreamed of being a curator.

She used to be an assistant to artist Chalit Nakpawan, but after trying out a job as a concierge officer at St. Regis Bangkok, she was hooked. Today, she says she has not regretted her decision. “Our job is to make sure that guests enjoy the utmost experience from our hotel even before check-in and after they have checked out,” she says. One challenge is how to make an ordinary answer appear extraordinary. More importantly, difficult guests who always come with unusual requests and eventually get a feedback with genuine smile. Nissara shares with us some tips she gives guests at InterContinental Bangkok: • Best Thai restaurants -- During the hot season, I would recommend Kao Chae (dry-cooked rice in cold water, eaten with condiments) from one of the most unseen

restaurant in the downtown area. But I enjoy recommending, Baan Wannakovit, which is a colonial style house that opens for limited customers each day. • For chill-out and party fun -- Q&A Bar in Asoke • For shopping --- Lung Perm Market (behind the Thai Airways' head office) & Soi Lalaisup, and Gaysorn Plaza • Best way to enjoy their holiday -- Just follow the “Perfect Day” which InterContinental Bangkok has tailor-made for first time visitor to discover a must see place in Bangkok within a day. Of course there are more, but whatever a guest’s request might be, Nissara says she always carries with her, “positive thinking” and open-mindedness." “I just think that everything is possible or close to possible for my guests,” she says.

GHOSTS HAVE EYES Thailand’s wild and wacky Phi Ta Khon Festival on July 6-8 is Thailand at its most vibrant; a great way to experience old school tradition along with being part of the best party you’ll find for miles in Dan Sai by Dave Stamboulis

T

hailand has a lot of bizarre festivals, such as the macabre selfmutilation Vegetarian Festival in Phuket and the tranceinduced Wat Bang Phra tattoo fest, where participants bring their body tattoos to life, acting out the animals inscribed on their anatomies. However none is as colorful, fun, and more representative of the great Isan hospitality than Phi Ta Khon, the wacky homegrown festival that takes over the tiny hamlet of Dan Sai in Loei Province. Dan Sai is a dot on the map, a village you’d pass by one hundred times without even knowing you’d passed it by; essentially just a junction town on the road from Loei to Phitsanulok. However, every June or July, the village swells to metropolis size, with thousands of revelers making their way here from around the country to check out the crazy antics of Phi Ta Khon. Phi Ta Khon, which translates into either “ghosts with human eyes,” or possibly “ghosts follow villagers” takes its origins from both Buddhist and animist rituals, of which nobody can ascertain for certain. On the one side, there are connections with the Buddhist Bun Phra Wet festival, a religious ceremony in which people congregate to listen to recitations of sermons in hopes of making merit for one's next rebirth. Yet the Dan Sai folks have added the Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival to the program, which is a rain and fertility rite

where bamboo rockets are fired into the skies in the hopes the heavens will respond in kind for the coming farming season. Dan Sai's version features loads of young men and women whom, in addition to their colourful spirit costumes, carry wooden phalli and swords, which they use to prod and tease each other as well as bystanders at every opportunity. Throw in some mor lan Isan country music, lots of grilled chicken and papaya salad vendors, and even more local moonshine and you have the recipe for one fun filled rump-shaking weekend. Some say it is the Thai equivalent of Halloween and Mardi Gras. Others equate it as a Thai rendition of a Grateful Dead show. All the villagers in Dan Sai don masks made from sticky rice containers that have been painted with elaborate and loudly colored expressions. Along with the masks, costumes are worn, and virtually

all the participants carry palad kid, phallus icons, which get waved, prodded, and shook at everyone, accompanied by lewd jokes, flirting, and plenty of naughty and raucous innuendos. The villagers follow the local shaman, who is adorned in sacred threads and carried on a bamboo rocket float, flanked by monks being carried in sedan chairs, which get tossed in the air by their bearers. Bamboo rockets get fired into the air, lots of lao khao moonshine rice wine gets consumed, and their is endless dancing and singing, fuelled by the fantastic collection of mor lam traditional musicians, who have come from all over Isan to attend the fete. Phi Ta Khon is Thailand at its most vibrant, and a great way to experience old school tradition along with being part of the best party you’ll find for miles, and it’s well worth making your way to tiny Dan Sai to check it out.

Every year, usually in July, Dan Sai village swells to metropolis size, with thousands of revelers making their way here from around the country to check out the crazy antics of Phi Ta Khon.

Travel Tips

Phi Ta Khon 2016 takes place July 6-8. The nearest airports and major bus stations to Dan Sai are in Loei, followed by Phitsanulok. Accommodation in Dan Sai is limited. LIFESTYLE ART SCENE

ARTSY GLAM With its resident artists and vibrant venues, Kampong Glam in Singapore is proving that arts are quickening the pulse in the "Lion City' by Marco Ferrarese

hen thinking about Singapore, it is the images of the most sprawling modernity that immediately come to mind; maybe Marina Bay and its futuristic skyline, one of Southeast Asia’s most iconic success stories, or the glitzy dining scene of Clarke Quay, where Singapore’s expatriates enjoy some of the most user friendly, clean and safe Asian nightlife experiences. Singapore is also known for being a business-oriented metropolis, one not very well suited to have a real artsy side, especially when thinking of the draconian government and its tight grip on everything that’s bound to pass on local stages and

screens. Believe it or not, these days something is definitely boiling artswise in Lion City. It radiates from the Kampong Glam district, a gracious area of old heritage shop houses perched a bit north of Marina Bay along the Nicoll highway. Like a well-thought out pun, the word ‘glam’ already evokes images of decadent rock and roll, David Bowie, hair rock and flamboyant cross-dressing. And in as much as we’ll see that rockers are involved in this Singaporean artsy renaissance, the origin of the district’s name comes from the cajeput tree, which pronounces as “gelam” in Malay. gallery and café housed in a restored shop house and totally dedicated to arts. On one end of the tiny and cozy interior there’s a bar serving refreshing drinks, strong cuppas of locally roasted Liberty Coffee and excellent homemade cakes. On the opposite side, a small and informal stage is the platform where emerging local and international artists perform, play music, talk, and present their artworks, which of course hang in profusion from the walls of this multifaceted café cum art gallery. It’s not a case that Kampong Glam is also home to one of Singapore’s most important arts spaces, the Aliwal Arts Center (aliwalartscentre.sg). A multidisciplinary arts space with a strong focus on performing arts, Aliwal organizes an annual urban art festival and boosts an incredible array of events spanning the whole gamut of performance, from Chinese Opera to ballet, from theatre to traditional Chinese music courses, and even punk and heavy metal shows. Speaking of the latter, just up the road from Aliwal Arts Center is Independent Archive (independentarchive.sg), a reference library and collection of archival material on Singapore’s arts opened in an attractive shop house in 2012 and run with a totally Do It Yourself spirit. This place is run by some members of Singapore’s punk and hardcore community, who took residence upstairs. The ground floor is open to regular film screenings, acoustic music performances, discussions, artists’ talks, and book launches. The

in 1819, the area was the seat of Singapore’s Malay aristocracy. By 1822, it was designated for the Sultan and his household, as well as the Arab and Malay communities. That’s the reason why even today, Kampong Glam maintains a very Islamic vibe, possibly helped by the presence of a number of Middle Eastern restaurants fitted with Arabian-Nights-influenced furniture all along the main walking street, Bussorah Pedestrian Mall. Palm lined and elegantly cobbled with maroon tiles, it’s a great path to access to the Sultan Mosque, a majestic golden dome that rises at the center of the district. The Islamic charm here mixes with the colonial cool of refurbished shop houses lining Arab, Baghdad and Kandahar streets, where many Indian and Malay restaurants dish up some of the most affordable street food Singapore has to offer. It’s not casual then that such a different place could become Singapore’s den of bohemians and artists. As to mark its boundaries for the attention of art lovers, it’s along adjacent Victoria Street that famous Penang-based mural artist Ernest Zacharevic painted a gigantic girl caressing a lion’s cub. Right opposite in Jalan Pisang and Jalan Kelapa, there are two more of Zacharevic’s murals, one of a child peeping out of a window, and another of two children freewheeling in shopping carts – which are real, and installed into the wall. Just in a couple minutes walking distance from the girl with lion-cub painting and the Sultan Mosque is the Artistry (artistryspace.com), an art

LIFESTYLE SHOPPING

by Zipporah Gene

A

trip to Bangkok, often described as the “Shoppers Shangri-La,” always inevitably ends with one, two, or more steals tucked away in your suitcase. With an endless array of stalls, malls, and market halls catering for all tastes and needs, you’ll find the perfect mix of luxe and local, high-society and bargain bins here. Whether you’re shopping for mementos, splashing out on something decadent, or stocking up your larder with some exotic homegrown produce, there’s definitely a never-ending stream of nightmarkets, pop-ups, and mega-malls to please and appease. With so much on offer it’s not surprising then, that to the untrained eye, it can all prove to be just a little overwhelming. Here’s a quick, handy, and more importantly, local guide, by a seasoned shopaholic on just how to navigate this concrete paradise.

1. Know Your Terrain

Do you know the best way to get around? The difference between Siam and Saladaeng? Your BTS from your MRT? Lack of planning can lay waste to any endeavor, and as any experienced local shopper knows, to find the best bargains, you need to

56

get to as many places as possible. If the proof is in the pudding, then let’s just say that Bangkok’s is a sticky, congested, traffic-laden tiramisu of malls and automotive mayhem - don’t get caught out! Knowing how to beat the gridlock means you can cram more sights in trip. The best ways to avoid the traffic are the sky train (BTS) and the underground (MRT). Most of the best places to shop are either at the BTS/MRT stops, or are simply within walkable distance. For everything else there’s always taxi, motorcycle taxi, uber, etc.. Tips for the luxury shopper: If you’re new and strapped for time, start at the heart. Bangkok’s Siam Paragon (1 991/1 Rama I Rd) is centrally located and perfect to start browsing. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., this mall--one of Asia’s biggest--has everything you need by way of the big fashion houses. There’s even a state-of-the-art cinema, aquarium, and an impressive food court all worth the waltz. Tips for the bargain babe: If perfectly manicured concessions aren’t your thing, then simply walk across Siam BTS station to

MBK Center (444 Phayathai Rd, Pathumwan). Crammed to the teeth with over 2,000 stalls you can find everything here from souvenirs, second-hand cameras to surf gear and best of all - it’s at bargain prices. Best of all they are open to a little bit of friendly haggling.

2. Be Patient

Just because you can’t find what you want doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Although the language barrier can be a hindrance on occasion, Thai shop assistants (for the most part) seem to posses an inexhaustible storehouse of patience; you’ll be surprised at the lengths they’re willing to go to help you.

Emquartier

Tips: Fortune favors the bold so do some research beforehand and arm yourself with some knowledge of store events. The major malls like: Centralworld, Siam Paragon, Emporium and Terminal 21, host tons of events all-year-round sometimes with added benefits like nibbles or product sampling.

3. Size Up

Now before you go loopy from the bargains be sure to check that the items actually fit you properly. Not many people realize this but Thai sizes are comparatively different. Just because a shoe says 41 on it, does not necessarily mean it is an EU 41. Nothing’s worse than returning home, to find that all that you’ve bought has to now be ‘gifted’ away. Luckily, all of the high-end malls and stores have changing rooms, however the lower end stalls don’t; so be very sure before you purchase anything. Tips for the luxury shopper: Many of the stores actually offer an alteration service; so if you find what you want, but it doesn’t quite fit, simply ask for it to be altered. This may take one or two days and may or may not incur an additional fee (depending on the store). Tips for the bargain babe: Most stall owners, especially if they make all the clothes themselves, carry a measuring tape - religiously. Rather than risking it by sight alone, ask them to measure both you and the piece of clothing.

4. Haggle versus Hassle

Whatever your stance on the subject matter, there’s no denying the fact that everyone likes a good bargain. The satisfaction of getting what you want, at a cheaper price, is a rush like no other. Even though the major stores don’t allow for haggling, there are plenty of incentives available, and most are happy to tell you as soon as you walk in. Just in case, there’s the duty free rebate, visitor’s offer off, store event offer - basically, you’d regret not inquiring. When dealing with stalls and the like, the trick is to always purchase more than one item. When doing so, ask for the wholesale price and you’re sure to snag something even cheaper than you expected.

Whatever you decide, remember to have fun and enjoy the moment. If you have time, head to EmQuartier (651 Sukhumvit Rd/02 269 1188). This futuristic, multi-million baht complex stands just opposite the popular Emporium shopping mall. Accessible from Phrom Phong BTS station, just to view this impressive design is worth the visit alone. Hosting all the usual names in luxury retail, the mall is home to dozens of restaurants, cafes, offices and even houses an atrium, complete with a working waterfall. You can spend days here, wining, dining and still barely only scratching the surface. It’s currently the hottest place in town, so why not head there yourself and make your mind up.

Photos from Fossil

Tip: Every mall, pavement and side road, has one or two vendors selling coconut juice. For this not-quite used to the heat, Bangkok can take its toll on both the body and the brain; staying hydrated is a must and can be the difference between flustered and full blown meltdown. You’ll regret leaving without trying the local Thai iced tea (cha dum yen); brewed to perfection and served cold, it really does the trick.

5. Eat, Pray, Shop… and Relax

Fossil: Known for watches that have been the top choice in the market, Thailand now introduces Fossil bags for men and women. Well-tailored and stylish in design, Fossil handbags and backpacks for 2016 summer collection are made to match with the watches. iam Discovery recently opened its doors as Thailand’s largest lifestyle specialty store and ‘The Biggest Arena of Lifestyle Experiments’ after a THB 4,000-million re-build. The shopping center is owned and operated by Siam Piwat Co., Ltd., which also owns and operates prestigious retail developments such as Siam Paragon, Siam Center, and Paradise Park as well as the joint venture partner of ICONSIAM. “Siam Discovery – The Exploratorium marks the introduction to Thailand of a new concept; a hybrid retail destination that will be written as an important chapter in the history of the local retail industry,” said Chadatip Chutrakul, chief executive officer of Siam Piwat. “Visitors will see what they have not seen before at Siam Discovery. what they can never find anywhere else as they enjoy finding and discovering their true self.” Billed as “The Biggest Arena of Lifestyle Experiments,” Siam Discovery is packed with exhilarating experiences. Visitors are empowered to create the lifestyle that is right for them. It allows everyone to come experiment with new ideas and to mix a wide range of styles on offer inside Siam Discovery. “Every corner of the destination’s 40,000sqm is designed to become most accessible to the heart and soul of visitors, with a wide range of products presented in accordance with people’s story and interest to make their exploration more convenient and fun,” Chadapit said. From among a choice of more than 5,000 international and local brands of every price range, customers can conveniently choose, mix, match,

try, and then try again so that their purchases are in line with their taste and needs. Also being introduced here are some of the most exciting new approaches to dining. Food and beverage (F&B) outlets were closely integrated with retail and activities areas. More than 2,500sqm was dedicated to F&B across the entire building. It also introduces to Thailand one of the world’s most famous dining brands, which will be launched in late 2016. “What makes Siam Discovery different is that it offers a lot of exciting experiences throughout the venue,” Chadatip reiterated. “Products are presented as part of a story telling narrative that is engaging and interesting. They share a products source of inspiration, its vision for the future, or small anecdotes behind its creation. And

what is a totally new phenomenon the first time products and services are presented via this new approach which is breaking every rule of Thailand’s retail industry is our curated area called “Discovery Lab.” “We put together any products and services as well as activities that relate to a particular theme or story – a complete range of brands in one area for customers to enjoy choosing and buying products and services that suit their lifestyle and preferences in a single space,” she continued. Innovative digital technology is used to offer personalized experiences and communicate with customers in a friend-to-friend tonality. Visitors are invited to experiment with new ideas, to chat, advise and share stories to make a visit more fulfilling. Advanced communication tools, including the latest in multimedia and multi-screen technology, are available on every floor to communicate messages and create fun atmosphere for visitors. Siam Discovery has also invented a new tool called Siam Discovery Application, which is the most complete of its kind. More than just a mobile application, it marks the first time Asia that a mobile application and location-based service

worked together to communicate with customers and present personalized information, stories, and benefits. This means offering the most advanced shopping experiences such as the best shopping companion who invites everyone to experiment with new ideas, chat, give advice and share stories. The application, which also allows customers to express their opinions or criticize/compliment at all times, comes with zone-based notification or personalized offers based on locations that will notify customers of news and information regarding special offers or promotions of interest to them. This is another first in modern shopping experiences, steps ahead of all sales promotions and customer-relations campaigns of the past. “Siam Piwat has turned Siam Discovery into an art building that puts together designs by worldclass artist across the building,” Chadatip said. “The effort reinforces Siam Piwat’s commitment to offer experiences beyond expectations to customers even as the company focuses on building an exciting destination that can compete with the best of the world.” Most noteworthy too is that everything is being done within an environment friendly and sustainable development framework. “Sustainability is taken into consideration every step of the way, and this will continue as we present more activities to raise awareness and encourage people to care more about society and the environment.“ Everything is done with personalized service, among many other USPs.

Also, without the constraints of a particular brand or school of design, products are brought together under a single universal concept that puts customers at the center. Besides many imported brands, many of which are being launched in Bangkok for the first time, Siam Discovery also has its own shops selling unique products to match the requirements of discerning shoppers. And for fun-seekers, there are attractions such as Madame Tussaud’s and Toy Station to keep them busy. And that’s just for starters. Expect massive celebrations and lots of promotions to continue as Siam Discovery celebrates it big, grand, and phenomenal opening!

LIFESTYLE PERSONALITY

REDEFINING HOSPITALITY Already the largest and fastest growing Virtual Hotel Chain (VHC) in Southeast Asia, less than a-year-old NIDA Rooms offers value proposition to both hotel operators and customers

W

ith the face of global travel changing drastically because of online hotel bookings, it is not surprising that more and more companies are jumping on the bandwagon. But some companies are not just riding the trend. Some are out to revolutionize the industry – like NIDA Rooms, which has opened its Bangkok office in February this year. NIDA Rooms is on a phenomenal trail. Since its incorporation in September last year, the company has grown to become the largest VHC in the region with over 3,000 hotels and over 5.4 million rooms in just a span of over seven months. Formed to “revolutionize the Southeast Asian hospitality industry,” NIDA Rooms already has over 1,300 hotels in Thailand offering 2.3 million rooms and growing. Lookeast Magazine recently caught up with Atakawee “Eddie” Choosang, NIDA Rooms’ country head for Global Rooms Limited who runs all operations and business activities for the Thailand division. Eddie, who holds an MA from Cornell University, has been critical in structuring and leading the team including the Partnership Sales Division that is currently 70-members strong. Under his leadership, Global Rooms Limited Thailand has signed over 1,300 hotel contracts in a span of three months, making NIDA Rooms the largest VHC in Southeast Asia. Q: What’s behind the NIDA Rooms concept and how is it revolutionary? A: NIDA Rooms focuses on the underserved three-star and below hotels by obtaining their unsold rooms at deep discount level. The lower prices are strategically transferred to the end consumers. A minimum of five rooms per hotel is taken from a hotel’s unsold inventory.

by Percy Roxas This concept addresses a persistent and prevalent problem especially in the lower segment of the industry where occupancy rates tend to be lower. We utilize a unique model that is very similar to the model of Low Cost Carriers (LCC), where a product or service is provided to customers through a fully dynamic pricing model, which makes it affordable to a wider range of customers. Q: How is it different from other hotel online booking companies? A: Underserved rooms taken by NIDA Rooms are branded, decorated, and serviced under the NIDA Rooms brand. Selected hotel partners display NIDA Rooms' permanent exterior signage, which implies that the partner hotel has met its standards. It also ensures that the hotel provides essential requirements most desired by travelers, such as a clean room, comfortable bed, Wi-Fi, hot showers, and air-conditioning. Bookings with instant confirmation can conveniently be made through our website as well as via mobile application, which is available on both Android and Apple devices. Q: How does the end consumers and your hotel partners benefit from your proposition? A: The value proposition we offer to our hotel partners is threefold: increased revenues, increased reach, and increased recognition. Let me elaborate. By selling the hotel's unsold rooms under its own brand, NIDA Rooms helps hotels owners/ operators increase revenues without cannibalizing on existing business. Because the hotels we work with are predominantly 3-stars and below, and are single brands or small local chains, they often do not have the ability to market themselves to a wider audience. Our centralized marketing and PR activities help

reach new customers and bring them to the hotel. The hotel can then further increase revenues by offering other ancillary products and services. And because 3-stars and below hotel stays are often a hit-and-miss affair, their association with us provides guests with peace of mind knowing that NIDA Rooms has done all the hard work of ensuring that partner hotels meet minimum standards. Having the brand association reassures more customers to stay with hotels that partner with NIDA Rooms. As for the travelers, those who book hotels through us are guaranteed the best location, the right price, and the right quality. This is because NIDA Rooms conducts a 150-point check before entering into an association with any hotel. We ensure that the basic needs are met. Once a hotel has passed the checklist, NIDA Rooms then conducts another inspection to ensure that standards remain. We also encourage customer feedback. Q: What's your target in Thailand? A: Our target is to reach 2,200 hotels across Thailand by the end of 2016. Thailand is already the largest in terms of NIDA Rooms supply across the regional portfolio. Q: Is it too early to reveal your expansion plans? A: In fact, we are already eyeing expansion. We are keen on Vietnam. The expansion plan involves a concentration of additional hotels in the tier-1 cities and to reach 50% penetration of the hotels in tier tier-1 cities by end of 2016. Secondly, desired travelers’ behaviors are studied thoroughly. More research will be done to understand the traveling behavior and their accommodation selection process so we plan for effective penetration.

NIDA Rooms is confident of its future because of the phenomenal feedback it has been receiving and the number of hotel partners that has signed-up. This market is un-penetrated and NIDA Rooms believes this is a win-win situation for all.

Michelin star chef Jean-Michel Lorain

LIFESTYLE CHEF IN FOCUS

FOR GUEST HAPPINESS With deep-seated love for gastronomic cuisine that has been passed down from one generation to another, Jean-Michel Lorain continues a priceless legacy that is a family specialty by Percy Roxas

L

ast month, Bangkok foodies were treated a rare opportunity to enjoy fine cuisine created by Michelin-star chef Jean-Michel Lorain during the exclusive “Farm to Table” dinner organized at his Bangkok restaurant, J’Aime. A scion of the Lorain family, where a true love of gastronomy has been passed down through the generations, Jean-Michel has received numerous accolades throughout his career in recognition of his unrivalled expertise in the art of preparing fine cuisine. Literally raised around fine cuisine, Jean-Michel inherited his love of gastronomy, and honed it, in the shadow of his grandmother and parents, Michel and Jacqueline. Even today, Jean-Michel remembers admiringly watching his elders' every move in the kitchen, and himself captivated by the intoxicating aromas and exquisite ingredients he grew up with. Indeed, a deep-seated culinary love and passion have been passed down from one generation to another and gastronomic cuisine quickly became a Lorain family specialty. Today, that labor of love and eye for perfection on the part of the Lorain family can still be seen and experienced at his exclusive hotelcum-restaurant in Burgundy, Côte Saint Jacques. "Many long years of hard work went into achieving and sustaining the

prestigious image of this place," the chef says. In fact, from the kitchens to the rooms, from the service to the quality of the welcome and the superlative facilities offered to the customer, Côte Saint Jacques, was more than just a hotel or restaurant par excellence indeed. It was an experience to savored. But while a solid reputation precedes him, Jean-Michel does not place himself at the center-stage, and even willingly admits to a certain distrust of awards and the many pitfalls of being in the media, “in the interests of putting the spotlight away from himself and onto his team and their peerless dedication,” says a member of his team.“ Jean-Michel would rather that hard work and respect be always the basis and overwhelming ‘trademark’ of a Lorain kitchen. Like at J’Aime in Bangkok. “On all of my menus, you will find strong French staples such as ‘Bouef Bourguignon’ and the selection of desserts,” he shares. “You will also find some of my signature dishes such as quail and foie gras tourte on our menu. As for the desserts, our guests have a choice of eight delicious French dessert classics served in smaller portions.” Other more contemporary dishes have been taken from the menu at La Côte Saint Jacques and adapted to the new style of service at J’Aime, Bangkok.

“All the dishes at here can be shared and our guests will be able to sample as many dishes as they want. My objective is to give classic French cuisine a more modern and less formal image.” But Jean-Michel enjoys other kinds of cuisine. “Since I’ve been traveling around Asia, I have always enjoyed the various cooking styles and tastes of each country. I appreciate enormously the very social way of tasting and serving dishes common among Asian countries, which I think is friendlier and less formal than ours, so I decided to marry French cuisine with the Asian style of service.” A great example of this marriage is how he incorporated the famous Lazy Susan as the centerpiece that allows the dishes to easily be shared in his Bangkok restaurant. “To receive three Michelin stars He would for 25 years at La Côte Saint Jacques, rather that I have to constantly strive and work hard work hard every day and compete with and respect myself to ensure that everything is up be always to standard,” Jean-Michel says. In a way, the same personal the basis and philosophy applies to J’Aime in overwhelming Bangkok, which his daughter Marine ‘trademark’ runs in his absence. of a Lorain And, as in La Côte Saint Jacques, kitchen. there is only one important factor in the entire equation at his J’AIme restaurant at U Sathorn Hotel Bangkok. What is it? “Guest happiness,” was Jean-Michel’s quick reply.

THAI FOOD WITH

MODERN TWIST

T

by Rich Kantita

hai street food is an experience like no other, and even more when you enjoy them in new restaurants that and classing up Thai local food. This month, we’ve selected a few Bangkok restaurants that are showing the way on how the bar on Thai street food can be raised further and how they can be better experienced in their beautifully designed, modern and fun restaurants. Some are new and upcoming but others just needed to be visited as soon as possible!

Sukhumvit 33 // Tel: 02 662 3813) Creative American Chef Chandler has a great sense of taste that while he may not be native to Thai food he sure knows how to capture its authentic taste. Inspired by Thai street food and combining his impeccable skills and innovative techniques in the kitchen, he has created a menu for Baa Ga Din that is undoubtedly familiar to Thai taste, albeit presented in more interesting way perhaps. The restaurant itself is modern in design but incorporating local elements such as bamboo chicken cages, and paintings of roosters and Siamese fighting fish to give the place a sense of locality. Eat: Expect different techniques and presentation of the usual Thai street food favorites such as spicy salad and tom yum goong. The dishes looks very contemporary but their flavors remind you of home. We highly recommend one bone chicken wings served with green curry dip, which is as interesting as it sounds. Tom yum goong ceviche, grilled corn salad with green mango and kaffir, and crispy oyster remained true to Thai level of spice and are all incredibly flavorful. Calm the senses down with a sweet approach through a fruit mix dish that is nowhere ordinary. Drink: Try the Sake to keep it interesting!

BAA GA DIN (Phrom Chit Alley,

Som Tum Der

SOUL FOOD 555

(The Commons, Thonglor Soi 17, Sukhumvit 55, // Tel: 02 101 4526) Soul Food Mahanakorn’s second branch at The Commons gives the chic food mall a homey touch with its Thai and Thai-fusion dishes. Imitating the traditional street-side food stalls but recreated indoors with nice cool air-conditioning, the design and spirit of Soul Food 555 takes us back in time although the menu is definitely modern in flavors. Eat: One of the most familiar Thai soul food is kao pad grapow (rice with fried meat and holy basil), which of course is on the menu but made with hand-chopped Australian Wagyu grapow instead. Other interesting dishes include a mix of burger and the common Thai dishes such as khao soi, a type of curry traditional to Northern Thailand; and fatso crab, which is softshell crab with sour green mango mix. They may sound wild and their taste is wilder but extremely satisfying.

Drink: If the mood fits, try the tequila-mango shot. Service: 3/5 Visit: Open daily 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

SOM TUM DER (5/5 Saladaeng

Rd, Silom// Tel: 02-632-4499, BTS: Saladeang) A Michelin-starred famous papaya salad restaurant that took New York and Ho Chi Minh by storm cannot be missed if Bangkok is currently your city. Stepping into the restaurant, it’s like being in Isan (the northeastern part of Thailand). The décor is planted with every traditional material one can find in the Isan provinces such as bamboo crafted tools used to catch fish or cage the chickens. At the counter, displays glass bowls of ingredients for som tum (aka papaya salad), which is the signature of the restaurant, and follows the concept of every som tum venues around the country. Eat: Som Tum Der is proud of their recipe, which makes the traditional dish taste as closely to home as possible. Ingredients may be switched up the ingredients but sticks to the original style -- for example, by

adding roasted rice to flavor the beef in the house special grilled marinated beef dish. Other traditional Isan dishes include soft boiled prawns mixed with fresh herbs and minced roasted rice, local Isan spicy grilled catfish soup, spicy papaya salad with deep fried minced catfish, spicy minced grilled catfish salad, som tum der styled deep-fried chicken thigh, tum sua Sakonakorn and many more to explore! Drink: Lemon Grass Martini is an option and it does not disappoint. Try the Ice Rosella Juice or the Ice Chrysanthemum Juice to help cool

Designed and curated by Khunying Mangmom, whose aim is to provide guests a traditional Thai food experience while enjoying a more comfortable ambience. Inspired by the famous 1996 Thai film about a popular Isan restaurant, Kai Yang Sua Yai holds the essence of the past in some of their menu and servings. Eat: The expansive menu offers a range of original Isan cuisine as well as typical Thai dishes. Signature dishes include the crispy skin grilled chicken, deep-fried white perch with

som tum and spicy papaya salad with fresh shrimps. Try the more unfamiliar dishes such as spicy omelet that is mixed with Thai-styled spicy salad with roasted rice created by the owner herself. For dessert, sticky rice and banana wrap is a must. This traditional dessert is harder to find nowadays. Drink: Thai milk tea and Anchan lemon juice are among the favorites and a traditional pick. Service: 4/5 Visit: Open daily 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

OSHA CAFE (Asiatique The

Riverfront, 2194 Charoen Krug Rd, Warehouse 10 ) From San Francisco, Osha welcomed its second branch in Bangkok last month with Osha Café, located at the busier commercial ground of Asiatique. With a more vibrant and relaxing atmosphere, this new establishment aims for a fun dining experience. The place is garbed in

yellow and gold with a tinted black door and walls on the entrance, as part of Osha’s signature. Working together with the ‘Cooking Chronicle,’ a traditional cooking class by the experience and well-known chef who will share the knowledge of Thai authentic and royal recipes at the cooking studio (every day, 1-9 p.m.) Eat: Executive chef Panida of Osha again brings the oohs and ahhs with his special menu. From the crab omelette, crispy shrimp rolls, and crispy soft shell wrap that make for a fun dining experience, to dishes such as red curry drab and senjan pu nim deliver the amazing traditional taste with a modern twist in both the looks and style of serving. Drink: For a great taste and picture-worthy drink, try the "Tuk Tuk-Mekong" blend with vodka, quince juice and rose syrup, served alongside a miniature tuk-tuk. THAI TO TANTALIZE Newly renovated Suan Bua Restaurant at Centara Grand Hotel @ Central Ladprao proves why Thai food remains among the world’s top favorite cuisines by Percy Roxas

T

hai food never ceases to tantalize with its range and versatility – reasons why it has become one of the world’s favorite cuisines. This cuisine easily adapts to today’s food trends, almost always with amazing results, and its extraordinary ability to retain its traditional qualities even when prepared in the most contemporary way, makes it nothing short of dazzling. We have proven this again during our latest visit to Suan Bua Restaurant (Tel: 02 541 1234, ext. 4068 // email: fb_office@chr. co.th), the signature Thai restaurant of Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao Bangkok. Regarded as an

institution in Bangkok for over 30 years, this restaurant was closed for renovation since November 2015. It reopened just recently, and unveiled not only a completely new stylish look but also a new menu feturing delectable Thai cuisine in modern style -- and that’s an understatement. Because Thai meal is supposed to be shared, our genial hosts immediately presented us with a few of its signature dishes: pla kapong samoonprai (deep-fried seabass with fresh Thai herbs); mieng goong kleab bua (fluffy river prawn in lotus flower leaves served with spicy and sweet sauce); goong maenam yang rad hoylai phad prik khing (grilled river prawns with spicy clam meat); and

gang massaman nong gae, which is slowly braised (six hours) New Zealand lamb shank in massaman curry with purple and yellow sweet potato. We’ve tried most of these dishes before but somehow, it’s like tasting them again for the first time, thanks to the obviously high-quality ingredients that the restaurant uses, to the wonderful presentation of each dish, and the unique flavors that was the result of Chef Santiphap Petchwao's long culinary experience

and expertise. Each dish was like a delicate piece of art meant to amaze, delight, and intrigue. If you’re a fan of Thai food you know what to expect from it, and yet nothing prepares you for the fulfillment you are bound to enjoy with Chef Santiphap’s creation. Asked what his secret was, the chef simply says, “Suan Bua is dedicated to creating authentic Thai cuisine in modern style. We serve dishes from every corner of the country, ranging from ultraspicy Southern through to tangy

Northeastern and milder Northern fare.” The current menu consists of other signature dishes such as Wagyu beef flank soup with sweet potato, Scottish salmon in fish sauce served with bitter gourd, wing bean salad with foie gras, and Australian beef tenderloin in shrimp paste curry with lemon grass and sweet basil – and their name partly explains what’s he’s been doing at Suan Bua. But even with the first five dishes that we’ve tasted alone, we know we have to come back for more soon. As we enjoy our dessert, sang ka ya i-tim vanilla (Thai custard bread and vanilla ice cream), we were thinking about how our dining experience was enhanced by the now utterly modern dining environment. The new “simple, natural” setting that incorporates the hotel’s lush green and the glass walls, and ceiling create an open, tropical feel – bright, airy, and at one with nature. We vaguely remember the old Suan Bua, which was more traditonal in theme. We like this one better.

Suan Bua is dedicated to creating authentic Thai cuisine in modern style,..

THIS MONTH'S WINNER

Congratulations to our winner this month, Jira Apinyawat. Jira recently went to Hua Hin with her family and she shares with us her latest experience in the amazing beach resort town. For this, she wins a gift voucher from our sponsor, Hilton Hua Hin, which is giving a 1 night stay in a Deluxe room inclusive of breakfast for two. Congratulations!

H

ua Hin is certainly one of the best destinations for foreign tourists visiting Thailand. The town has been a favorite holiday spot of many Thai tourists like us for years, and its charm keeps us coming back for more again and again. I was there again recently, in fact, with my family (eight adults and two cute kids) and, as usual, we did have a great time. We stayed for three days and two nights, and we enjoyed it so much that we are already planning to revisit again soon! Hua Hin has expanded and grown a lot in recent years, and today there are dozens of new attractions and tons of luxurious projects being built in the area. But the great thing is, despite the onset of more modernization, Hua Hin remains rooted in its alluring gracious Old World character. Indeed, the fast-paced city life of Bangkok ends once you arrive in Hua Hin. If you are looking for a chance to enjoy a “slow life” as Thais say these days, this is a great place to be because it’s not as crowded or as commercialized as the other beach towns. Of course, many people visit Hua Hin primarily for its beautiful beaches and delicious seafood, but also for its rich culture and interesting history – and a slow pace of life that allows you to breathe, enjoy, and just be. We made our first stop at a popular seafood restaurant located next to a beach. Food was great, and the kids had lots of fun trying to catch ghost crabs along the sandy beach. Then, we visited a temple on Khao Takiap hill, where you can enjoy a panoramic view--breathtaking even on a cloudy day—of the city. Although we’ve seen the local train station before, another

interesting attraction in Hua Hin, we can’t resist making a revisit. This train station is one of the oldest and most beautiful in Thailand. This is a not-to-be-missed attraction, if you are in Hua Hin. There is a popular community library just across the street, so don’t forget to check it out as well. My family and I opted for the simple joys and simple pleasures – for that’s what we city folks often look for when we go to Hua Hin. Hua Hin has tons of this. I had one of the best coconut cakes at a place called Together Bakery Shop downtown, and I urge you to try this if you still haven’t. Oh, you don't have to worry about places to stay because there is such a wide variety to choose from and any choice is as good as any, I must say. Of course we did more than those that I mentioned but the bottom line is this: Hua Hin—all in all--pretty much has everything for everyone. So just go and immerse yourself in whatever it offers!
