Highlights From Our Gardens A Riot of Retro This season we’re throwing it back with our celebration of all things retro … made even merrier and even brighter with our always-fab A Longwood Christmas touch. Color, color, and more color greets you the moment you enter the East Conservatory, including the vibrant pink Schlumbergera ‘Thor Carmen’ baskets that float overhead in the entry. Venture inside and find nostalgic touches from tinsel garland to wreaths adorned in vintage Putz-style houses to more terrific throwbacks all around you. Gaze across the Oval Basin, where the towering bold East Tree beckons with bubble garland and vintage-style round ornaments in red and green; warm white lights drip from the ceiling for an extra touch of magic. Savor the colors of a candy caneinspired tree as you enter the Ballroom, where inside seven trees lovingly dressed in ornaments crafted by local community organizations— including Chester County Futures, Kennett Area Community Service, La Comunidad Hispana, Latin American Community Center, Mighty Writers, Migrant Education Center, and The Garage—take center stage. Hugging our community trees is a forest of trees draped in elegant shades of white, champagne, and silver. Make your way to the Exhibition Hall and marvel at all that awaits you, from trees bursting with baubles of vintage-style bubble lights and stars, to bold gold and silver hues that set the retro tone. In the middle of it all is a vintage Christmas main street scene running the length of the Fern Floor and transporting you back to another time. An allée of trees underplanted with Euphorbia Diamond Frost® spurge and Lobularia Snow Princess® sweetalyssum amid glowing lamp posts—

not to mention beautiful tinsel garlands spanning the entire width of the Fern Floor—leads the way to two stunning Exhibition Stage trees and a large water feature. Continue the nostalgic step back in time with a stroll through the Music Room. Decked out for a holiday party, this throwback living room scene shines with mid-century modern furniture in blush and mint tones, a festive champagne tinsel tree, colorful wreaths, a fireplace mantel of wrapped packages, and much more. You’ll also find an 18-foot-tall tree draped in gold bubble garland and ornaments in gold, champagne, pink, copper, and purple. Throughout the room we’re proudly displaying glassware trees, candy dishes, and more crafted by two local nonprofit organizations: GoggleWorks Center for the Arts (Reading, PA) and Burning Branch Studio (Kirkwood, PA). In the Main Conservatory, an 18-foot rotating tree delights with its multicolored vintage lights, red and silver tinsel, and beaded garland, all atop a bed of poinsettias, while floral poinsettia trees stun with their festive form. It’s impossible not to look up while you walk through the Acacia Passage, featuring a playful display of more than 1,500 round ornaments suspended from the ceiling complemented by amaryllis and birch branches. Things are still looking up in the Orchid House, where a concentric chandelier of all white Phalaenopsis hangs in the center of the space, while the Silver Garden’s 15-foot tall tree is dressed in purple and silver, as well as kokedama— an artform of living plants growing in soil balls and wrapped in moss and string—used as natural, living ornaments. Looking for even more throwback fun? In the Peirce-du Pont House, revel in handmade tinsel decorations, multicolored lights, ornately dressed packages, vintage sleds, bottlebrush trees, and more.

A Bevy of Bright This year’s celebration of all things retro can be experienced indoors and out—and our outdoor gardens have never been brighter. From the moment you step foot in the Visitor Center—outfitted in frosted pink trees with gold and seafoam green ornaments, to hand-painted botanical murals inspired by vintage Christmas illustrations and paired with complementary wreaths—you step back in time. From our Visitor Center, make your way to our Rose Arbor, where we’re throwing it back—to last year’s A Longwood Christmas display—with the return of our glowing lantern composed of punctuated leaf forms that mimic the nearby leaves of the surrounding Rosa ‘American Pillar’ that bloom each summer, and cast an enchanting shadow throughout the space. Stroll down our Flower Garden Drive and its ribbon of overhead lights and find the beloved Wildlife Tree. This year's Wildlife Tree is outfitted in bold, primary colors and features handmade brick-toy birdfeeders and complementary birdhouses, which not only give a nod to the iconic brick-toy company that was established in 1932 and started making plastic blocks in 1947, but also give nourishment and respite for our furry and feathered friends throughout the season. Much more awaits you at the Small Lake, where an artful arrangement of supersized retro bulbs floats on the surface. Across the pathway and near our Large Lake, supersized fun continues with oversized handmade stars perched atop the turf. Get an even better view of them from our Canopy Cathedral Treehouse, adorned with vintage hanging paper ornaments, multi-colored lights, and such metallic touches as gold tinsel garland. The Italian Water Garden positively glows not only because of its fire pit, but also with the warm light of luminaria. In the center of the garden, the luminaria move upward and form a grand 24-foot-tall tree. Sphered flicker bulbs light the way along the Meadow Boardwalk as you make your way

to our spectacular, 200-foot-long Meadow Tunnel in all its multi-colored glory. The Lookout Loft Treehouse shines with its pink macrame garland, gold beads, and gold ornaments, while the Birdhouse Treehouse stuns with its white willow arch, red bubble garland, and handmade gold balls and stars. The neighboring Garden Railway makes its triumphant holiday return with dozens of festive locomotives and engines rumbling along 500 feet of beautifully landscaped track. Just next to it find an all-new display highlight—and incredible photo op spot—with our Longwood Farms vintage red truck. This lovingly restored 1969 International Loadstar 1800 has been completely refurbished to a 1960s aesthetic and repainted in classic red by our expert Facilities team. Featuring such thoughtful touches as a bed of reclaimed white oak from fallen Longwood trees, the truck sits poised just outside of the Peirce-du Pont House, ready for plenty of wows and plenty of selfies! The throwback fun continues on the western end of our Gardens. Enter the Main Fountain Garden through our 150-foot-long Main Fountain Garden Tunnel with a vintage-lighting feel and then find lit trees, a walk-through tree along the south allée, and lights in our Grotto. Venture beyond the Main Fountain Garden to our Pear-Shaped Basin near the Chimes Tower and find yourself amid the warmth of one of our two fire pits at the Pumphouse Plaza and the wonder of glowing orbs to a glistening floating tree of blue, silver, and white. On your way back to the Visitor Center, stroll underneath suspended lights along Paulownia Drive, leading to the 25-foot Gardener’s Tree, draped in gold and silver gourds; red, gold, and silver ornaments; and vintage wooden blocks … complete with delightfully nostalgic, oversized vintage blocks at the base of the tree spelling out—what else?—Longwood.
