Highlights from Our Gardens Art in Our Gardens (1) From the moment you arrive at Longwood this season—even before you enter the Visitor Center—you’ll be greeted by lovely hues and an imaginative take on springtime beauty. Muted, pastel purples and yellows take center stage in the 12 beds just outside of our Visitor Center, gracefully showcasing a gorgeous mix of flowers. Our Visitor Center beds will feature delicate yellow and violet Crocus chrysanthus ‘Advance’, soft blue-violet Crocus ‘Yalta’, and dwarf Iris histrioides ‘George’ in a rich plum with a wisp of yellow, all making their first appearance in March. Early, mid, and late varieties of tulips, grape-hyacinth, daffodils, snapdragons, and more beauties will follow, including towering Allium hollandicum ‘Purple Sensation’, cheerful viola, and textural nemesia and Brassica, rounding out this garden’s multilayered design. After entering the Gardens, you’ll find our acres awash in spring color, scents, and textures … as well as a fresh take on our Idea Garden, a five-acre garden celebrated for its creativity and experimental approach. In preparation for the season, we laid this garden’s bulbs in a Mondrianinspired design of 76 rectangles of varying sizes, evoking the Dutch painter’s famed composition and giving the garden a new look and feel. Taking Mondrian’s proportions used in his paintings and employing those proportions in our planting design, we created an artistic, harmonious layout of such bulbs as purple Crocus tommasinianus and blue Scilla siberica, which add fine texture to the garden, followed by such showstoppers as deep maroon Tulipa ‘Vincent Van Gogh’, golden Iris ‘Sunshine’, and fragrant Narcissus ‘Thalia’—making the Idea Garden a true work of art throughout the season.

Our Multi-Sensory Earth Day Performances Inspire (2) Learning happens throughout our Gardens and our offerings. This season we present performances that not only entertain through story, song, and imagery, but also take a closer look at global sustainability and other issues impacting our environment. Our Earth Day-inspired performances kick off on Saturday, April 6 with Selected Shorts. Experience the hit weekly public radio show live, as awardwinning actors Jill Eikenberry, Zach Grenier, and Michael Tucker perform spellbinding short stories on the wonders of nature. On Thursday, April 18 the Fry Street Quartet and climate physicist Dr. Robert Davies together incorporate live music, visual art, and compelling science in The Crossroads Project: Rising Tide performance, composed of a series of vignettes exploring global sustainability. On Tuesday, April 23, the string quartet ETHEL and Grammy Award-winning instrumentalist Robert Mirabal present ETHEL & Robert Mirabal: The River. Inspired by water and its essential role of life on Earth, this cross-cultural performance evokes Native American traditions through contemporary music and storytelling. Tickets are now available at longwoodgardens.org/performanceseries. For more information on our upcoming performances, turn to the Summer Stars pages of this brochure.

Building Our Legacy of Learning (3) Our Gardens are a living expression of all that our founder, Pierre S. du Pont, found inspiring, meaningful, and beautiful. At the heart of our mission— and Mr. du Pont’s intentions for Longwood—is education. From our Professional Horticulture Program and Continuing Education courses, to our creation of the Community Read and our onsite tours and talks, we view education as both a source—and result—of inspiration. At the helm of Longwood’s commitment to education is our Vice President, Education Sarah Cathcart (below left). Cathcart came to Longwood in June 2017 from the Royal Horticultural Society in the UK, where she served as the head of education and learning and was responsible for the RHS Campaign for School Gardening with approximately 36,000 participating schools. Cathcart also served as a member of the UK Horticulture Roundtable Council, a trustee of the UK Chartered Institute of Horticulture, a member of the steering group for GrowCareers, and a trustee of StreetScape, a charity that trains disadvantaged young people for careers in horticulture. Here at Longwood, Cathcart oversees the development, implementation, and coordination of our global education programs, which include the two-year Professional Horticulture Program; the School & Youth Program, which attracts 45,000 students online and in person annually; the Co-Op

Program; Continuing Education Program for adults; the High School and University Internship Program; the International Internship and Training Program; the 13-month Longwood Fellows Program; and the Longwood Library and Archives. As one of her first Longwood endeavors, Cathcart also oversaw the implementation of Longwood’s two free online open courses, which enabled more than 7,500 students around the globe to engage in virtual learning opportunities based on Longwood’s orchid and waterlily collections. One such course, Everything About Orchids, is available now through May 6, 2019 via longwoodgardens.org/everythingabout-orchids. There’s much more in store, including enhancing opportunities to help guests connect with nature. “We are working to enable broader access to learning,” shares Cathcart. “We want to make sure everyone can engage with the gardens, plants, spirit, and place that is Longwood.” Cathcart’s plans include developing partnerships and projects with local school districts and community programs, as well as creating curriculum-based projects that elevate the awareness of horticulture as a field. “We are working to transform the way people look at, and learn about, the garden in general … building on the strength of Mr. du Pont’s intentions and continuing that spirit for generations to come,” shares Cathcart.

A Splash of Brilliance: The Fountains of Longwood Gardens Now in The GardenShop (4) Look for a splash of something new in The GardenShop! A Splash of Brilliance by Longwood’s P.S. du Pont Fellow Colvin Randall tells the amazing story of the fountains of Longwood Gardens, home to more waterworks than any other garden in the Americas. Spanning founder Pierre S. du Pont’s visits to European gardens and world’s fairs in the late 19th and 20th centuries, to the 2017 unveiling of Longwood’s revitalized Main Fountain Garden, the book is a fascinating tale of horticulture, technology, and travel, decades in the making. Illustrated with 266 beautiful historic and modern photos, the book is a retrospective of fountain evolution and a celebration of some of Longwood’s most iconic features. The author of books, exhibits, and videos about Longwood, Randall has studied Longwood’s fountains since the 1970s, researching this story by studying sketches, blueprints, calculations, purchase orders, planting plans, hydraulic test sheets, newspaper articles, and interviews with those who built the fountains—in addition to designing and programming fountain displays since 1980. Now available in The GardenShop, A Splash of Brilliance retails for $24.99. Join us for a book signing with Randall on Sunday, March 31 from 12–2:30 pm in The GardenShop.
