MESSAGES

It is with immense pleasure and great pride that I serve as the Patron of the inaugural UWI London Black Tie Benefit Dinner, which will be held at The Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn As an UWI Honourary Graduate and recipient of the prestigious Luminary Award at the UWI Toronto Benefit Awards, I am truly delighted to be part of this meaningful fundraising effort for an institution that has come to hold a special place in my heart . As a proud Jamaican by heritage and a passionate advocate for Caribbean and African cultural influences in my work as a composer, artistic director, conductor, and violinist, this event resonates deeply with me .

I am especially honored to welcome you as we unite to raise vital funds for the UWI Scholarship Programme I am further gratified that the proceeds from this Dinner will support postgraduate students engaged in groundbreaking

Patron’s Message

Climate Change research at The UWI As you are aware, Climate Change poses an existential threat to our Caribbean region, and The UWI has taken a leading role in producing significant research and championing advocacy in Climate Action . Of note is that The UWI is the first Caribbean university to participate in the Responsible Futures Programme, aiming to embed sustainability as a mainstreamed modus operandi across all five campuses – an objective that we can all emulate in our various professions

The theme of this event, “Educate to Elevate,” speaks profoundly to the transformative power of education, a principle I have long embraced as an educator and academic In my role as Professor of Music at the University of Westminster, I have witnessed firsthand how education can liberate minds and uplift communities, a cause that aligns perfectly with UWI’s mission

This special occasion also allows us to celebrate and honour individuals of Caribbean heritage who have achieved remarkable success in their respective fields . Their contributions have brought recognition and acclaim to the Region I also acknowledge our donor and sponsor organizations, whose diligent efforts in social responsibility continue to advance the Caribbean .

It will be an absolute joy to be in your distinguished company, and I eagerly look forward to engaging with you during what promises to be an extraordinary evening

Best Regards,

Shirley J. Thompson

Chancellor's Message

This inaugural UWI London Black Tie Benefit Dinner, under the theme “Educate to Elevate,” would not have been possible without the generous support of our Patron, Professor Dr Shirley

J Thompson OBE, our attendees, organizers, and sponsors We extend our sincere thanks for your contributions

As we look to the future, I trust that you will continue to offer your support . Together, we can ensure that The UWI London Black Tie Benefit Dinner, like the American Foundation for The UWI Gala and The UWI Toronto Benefit Awards — now in their 27th and 16th years respectively — continues to create lasting change, foster hope, and empower students to make a difference

This event marks a significant opportunity to celebrate the transformative power of giving . It underscores the shared mission of The UWI Scholarship Programme and The University of the West Indies — to advance learning, create knowledge, and foster innovation for the positive transformation of the Caribbean and the wider world

As a Caribbean native, I am acutely aware that although our region contributes minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions compared to developed countries, the climate crisis is disproportionately affecting our communities From shrinking coastlines and droughts to more frequent extreme weather events, the Caribbean faces an existential threat . With your continued support, The UWI Scholarship Programme will empower postgraduate students involved in Climate Change and Environmental Social Governance research at The UWI to pursue their dreams and improve the lives of ordinary Caribbean people on the frontlines of this crisis .

Finally, congratulations to our distinguished honorees — Baroness Floella Benjamin, Dr Donette Chin-Loy Chang, Dr Peter Cohen, Sir Lenny Henry, Dr Willard Wigan, Lord Simon Woolley and bp p l c . — whose contributions have brought recognition and acclaim to our beloved Caribbean region

I look forward to an extraordinary evening

Vice Chancellor's Message

My sincere thanks for your support for the inaugural UWI London Black Tie Benefit Dinner It is our sincere hope that this will become an annual event in the tradition of the American Foundation for The UWI Gala and the UWI Toronto Benefit Awards which are now in their 27th and 16th years respectively The New York and Toronto events have been very successful in raising scholarship funds for UWI undergraduate students . The funds generated from this London event will be used specifically for scholarships for post-graduate students focussing on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals such as climate change, the environment, food security, and public health in the region .

Climate change mitigation and adaptation are of significant concern to Caribbean countries, most of which are classified as Small Island Developing States In 2019, the International Association of Universities designated The UWI as its global leader in the mobilisation of research and advocacy in achieving a climate smart region and world This role affirmed several decades of stellar research and advocacy by UWI academics in highlighting the existential threat to the region from climate change, rising sea levels and ocean temperatures . The global “1 . 5 to Stay Alive” mantra was in part informed by work done at The UWI by our climate studies research cluster Our scientists are engaged in COP 29 preparations and The UWI’s institution-wide Global Institute for Climate Smart and Resilient Development supports collaboration in knowledge production and sharing of products and tools that enhance resilience within and outside our region .

This evening, we recognise and honour several outstanding individuals of Caribbean heritage, and organisations with connections to the Caribbean, for stellar contributions in their respective fields and to the communities they serve We thank you for sharing your brilliance with us . It is our fervent hope that the scholarship recipients will emulate you, our honorees and in so doing, maintain the tradition of excellence in service

Blessings

A Message from the Secretary‑General of the Commonwealth

There is no place on earth like the Caribbean, and this evening’s event will capture the spirit of a region which is as vibrant as it is unique

The Commonwealth’s bond with the Caribbean is longstanding and deeply cherished, anchored in shared values of democracy, freedom, solidarity, mutual respect and joint action

Through this relationship, we are continually reminded of the vital contributions the Caribbean has made to our global family — whether through culture and art, innovation, or advocacy for justice and equality .

In the face of global challenges, the Caribbean has consistently led with both vision and resolve Its people, institutions, and leaders have shown the world how to foster resilience and unity, even in the most challenging times .

The University of the West Indies is at the heart of this journey, cultivating new generations of leaders who will shape the future of the Caribbean and the Commonwealth with wisdom, integrity, and an enduring commitment to service

The fact that proceeds from this event will be granted in postgraduate scholarships for students involved in Climate Change and Environmental Social Governance research is a testament to UWI’s commitment, and I am proud to offer my support Climate change is an existential threat to the region we love, and we must all work in partnership to address it

This evening will be an important celebration of the incredible contribution to the Caribbean and the wider world made by those who have excelled in their fields . In honouring their service, we renew our commitment to our values and each other, and we look forward to a shared future which is built on the wealth of our potential, talent and commitment

I have no doubt that tonight’s celebration will inspire us all to continue building bridges and forging paths of success together

Reema Mannah’s Message

The singular objective of this inaugural dinner is to unite those who know that education is transformational Our theme “Educate to Elevate” pays homage to the modus operandi of the UWI which for 75 years has educated our people and elevated our region .

Our journey started with a mere intention at the 2023 Toronto Benefit and a question mark over what the London dinner should seek to manifest As we celebrate tonight, flanked by dignitaries, academics, philanthropists, activists, alumni and loyal corporations, the answer to that question is clear: we have manifested that the power of intellect can create goodwill

We are excited about the possibilities for a future where our postgraduate scholarships will positively impact our region and our sponsors . We have chosen ESG research as our sub-theme because we firmly believe that corporate and academic collaborations can yield tangible results

As Committee Co-Chair, I am grateful to our volunteers, benefactors, alumni and guests for their contributions to tonight . I congratulate the honourees on their awards and thank them for their elevating presence To the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellors and other UWI executives, immeasurable thanks for your encouragement . I wish you all a momentous and memorable night .

Following Planteray Rums’ traditional style XO 20th Anniversary is firstly matured in oak casks in Barbados’ tropical climate for between 8 to 15 years before being transported by sea in these casks to the south-west of France for a second maturation in ex-Ferrand casks for up to 10 years .

z Planteray XO 20th anniversary is an incredibly moreish sipping rum with rich notes of vanilla and cacao accompanying a nose awash with fruity and floral beauty . Best enjoyed neat or on the rocks with your friends around you .
