KATE MONTGOMERY
Kate Montgomery’s paintings ask us what we’re seeing. Showing female figures in domestic interiors or gardens, often with a glimpse of a wider landscape beyond, they are both perfectly composed and restless. What first catches the eye are her meticulously realised patterns. Sometimes these represent wallpaper or fabric. Sometimes they are paper or fabric-like patterns transposed to a path or to the sky. Disconcertingly working against natural perspective, they are combined with a recurrent motif of open windows and doors, sometimes paired with a mirror that reflects in the opposite direction: we find we are simultaneously looking at the scene, looking through it, and looking back into it. This aligns us with the women and girls in the paintings, who are poised among the multiple patterns as if collaged into their lives: at least one of them will always be gazing out and away. All of this makes Montgomery’s world, in Louis MacNeice’s words, ‘incorrigibly plural’. It invites us to reflect on the invisible histories behind the scenes she shows; it also invites us to reflect on our own act of observation.
