Tattoo
The word tattoo is said to have two major derivations- from The Polynesian word ‘ta’ which means striking something, and the Tahitian word ‘tatau’ which means ‘to mark something’. The history of tattoo began over 5000 years ago and is as diverse as the people who wear them. Tattoos are created by inserting colored materials beneath the skins surface. It is understood the first tattoos were created by accident; from rubbing a wound with a dirty hand covered in soot and ashes, then after the wound had healed, a distinct mark stayed permanently.
London Miles is proud to present Pens and Needles an art exhibition celebrating all
aspects of tattoo art, culture, and lifestyle. The exhibition features original artwork, tattoo stencils and photographs from more than 30 top international tattoo artists, fine artists and photographers. From pure tattoo sketches to documentary photography and fine art portraiture, Pens and Needles brings together artists from across the tattoo and contemporary art sectors to shed light on the oftencontroversial subject of tattoo and body art. With skills not only in the field of body art, many practicing tattoists also work with painterly mediums such as acrylic and oil on more ‘traditional’ canvases. Pens and Needles provides a rare opportunity to view original paintings from a number of high profile tattoo artists from across the globe, all of whom rarely show in a conventional gallery environment. Bringing together these individuals with other artists from across the realms of photography, fine, and contemporary art, Pens and Needles will cover a bit of everything…from artists that love tattoos, to tattoo artists that love painting. Across history, tattoo art has helped shape cultures, trends, and identities - from ancient Maori and Japanese tattoo art to the markings of gang members and modern day trendsetters. Opening up tattoo culture to a wider audience and showcasing the immense talents of the artists that shape the tattoo industry, London Miles Gallery is proud to present an artistic, dynamic, and thoughtful insight into still often-stigmatised social practice of tattoo art and body-modification.
