A Beautiful Place of Worship in AZ

By Shar Neuroth There is a beautiful little Chapel set in the high desert near Safford, Arizona that has been loved but over the years began to fall into ruins. This is the story about one young Eagle Scout’s service project to restore its lost glory. In the late 1970’s, Ben and Virginia Smith purchased land to set up a homestead with their children. Over a five-year period they built a twostory home, a ‘school-house’ for the children, a guest house designed like a Navajo style Hogan, a barn and a lovely log chapel. The chapel was used for special services and over the years they hosted at least one wedding there. A large picture window on the west side looks out at majestic Mt. Graham and provides a perfect background for the picturesque chapel. The homestead was an ideal place to grow-up, but eventually the Smith children all left home. The property became difficult for the Smith’s to manage alone so they decided to sell. At that time a group of nuns was looking for a new home. When they saw that a chapel was already built, they just knew it was meant for them. This is how the Smith family homestead became home to a group of nuns from the St. Paisius Monastery. Over the decades the original alligator juniper logs on the chapel lost their bark and began to show signs of age and weather. The original cement chinking began to crack and fall out, sometimes in large sections, and little desert creatures made homes in the nooks and crannies. The wood began to split and the bottom logs began to decay. Concerned for the chapel, The Sisters of St. Paisius Monastery began to research how to refinish the wood and save their little chapel. From their research, The Sisters knew that Perma-Chink chinking was the best product to seal the logs – only a synthetic product could handle the continuous movement of the wood and the irregularities of the rough logs. The project would require many man-hours and a sizeable

investment which The Sisters couldn’t manage; it seemed the chapel may have to be stuccoed in order to preserve its integrity. However, The Sisters just couldn’t bear to stucco the chapel because that would change the quaint old-world character. This is where a unique opportunity came in the form of a young man looking to earn his Eagle Scout award. A local contractor that had done work for the Monastery stopped by to see the project and talk with The Sisters, after hearing about their desire to keep the log structure and restore the chapel he mentioned to them that his son Stratton (age 15) was looking for a service project to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Stratton’s family loved the idea and discussions began on how best to complete a refurbishing of the logs. This is when Stratton really began looking at his Eagle Scout service project options. Wanting the project with the biggest challenge, he decided on the Chapel restoration project.

“Using Perma-Chink products was quite easy and not just a job for professionals. As you can see from the photos, I was able to complete all the steps necessary to make the chapel look amazing!” said Stratton. The Sisters from the Monastery have shared, “The transformation has been amazing! Not only does the building look beautiful, the chinking has sealed the building so well that the load has decreased on the air conditioning system. Everyone who sees the chapel is delighted, including Mrs. Smith who came back to visit. She is deeply pleased that the homestead she and her husband labored to build is still being used and loved.”

Stratton’s research began on the internet. After a couple of weeks, looking at the materials prices and before-and-after photos, the one company that kept appearing was Perma-Chink Systems. The best feature he found online and in the catalog were the pictures. “The pictures made the homes look like they were new and had been done by professionals.” said Stratton. Soon after completing his research, Stratton and his dad visited the Monastery and presented their research to The Sisters. Stratton called the Rifle, Colorado office of PermaChink and got the enthusiastic support and advice on how to proceed. Stratton also had great support from other local contractors…and with all this help, local tool donations and the support from his Boy Scout Troop; work began on the little chapel in March 2015. “The first day was the hardest, yet the most successful. This was the day we removed all of the old cement chinking with the brawn of many of my friends who came to support me.” said Stratton.

With the enthusiasm that comes from young men, groups of 20-25 came out on the weekends to complete each step in the restoration process. After testing various stain color and the log wash, larger quantities of materials were ordered and the project took off.

Spring/Summer 2016

“There was a big difference between the logs before and after the log wash and scrub…it was amazing! The soap-like log wash changed the dark grey log to a bright brown making the following steps work even better.” shared Stratton. Next he and his group of friends applied the stain, Lifeline Ultra-7 Almond. “This also worked astonishingly well, bringing out the beauty of the chapel.” shared Stratton. This step was followed by adding grip strip, the foam backing material, and re-chinking the chapel with Perma-Chink Sandstone. Coming to the end of the project was the final step, applying the Lifeline Advance Satin finish to protect the stain and chinking from weather.

Thank you to Stratton Baldwin – Eagle Scout, his loving family, his friends and Boy Scout troop and The Sisters of St. Paisius Monastery for sharing their beautiful Chapel restoration project with us; and to Mr. & Mrs. Smith and their family for building a little chapel all those years ago that will continue to be a beautiful place of worship in a small Arizona town.

NEW!

Available in 8 Perma-Chink colors

Change or Renew the Color of Your Chinking

Chink-Paint Smooth is a highly elastomeric, non-textured, pure latex paint for renewing or changing the color of chinking. The elasticity of Chink Paint Smooth enables it to expand and contract with the sealant without cracking or peeling. works in synergy with the wood’s natural elements to defend against UVexposure, moisture, mold and mildew, peeling, fading and discoloring, and provides unprecedented wood protection benefits.

This is the time of year that we get to appreciate the opportunity to sit out on our deck and enjoy the scenery and simple pleasures of being one with nature. But if your deck looks a bit worse for wear it may be time to do something about it. Chink-Paint Smooth is ideal to use on your chink lines following a wood finish restoration. When staining a home that is already chinked, it takes less effort to paint the existing chinking with Chink-Paint than it does to try to protect the chinking with masking tape during the staining process. It is virtually impossible to prevent some stain from getting on the chinking and once stained it is extremely difficult to clean or paint just the stained areas to blend with the surrounding chinking. If you are applying a new finish to your home you may as well refresh or even change the color of your existing chinking. This really gives the home a new, fresh look!
