brandon depuma STORY: AMANDA FERRARESE PHOTOS: DYLAN RAZO BRANDON DEPUMA, a young photographer with an eye for dramatics and saturnine tonality, is making waves with his work and has generated a significant following. The Arizona based artist attributes a portion of his success to the opportunities presented to him in his hometown, but acknowledges that there is more to it than that. “Arizona hasn’t shaped me as much as the people from Arizona. One of my friends since eighth grade actually got me into photography and wanting to take better photos and to be more creative.” DePuma has maintained this interest in photography as he has grown, but it wasn’t until another friend persuaded him to take the craft more seriously. “My friend, Cadence got me into it one day when she forced me to stop taking stupid selfies and posting them with Instagram filters. I realized I wanted to pursue photography more when I realized I had an eye for it. I loved capturing moments.” And she was right to make him do so, because he certainly has a knack for it. DePuma manages to capture not only a moment itself, but the essence and feeling behind it, creating pictures that transcend being purely visual and evoke a deep sense of emotion. Much of his work maintains a haunting and sullen feel, probably due in part to the emotional state he is typically in while working. “The vibe I usually try to convey is moody. Most of the time when I edit pictures I usually am listening to sad and emotional music, which leaks out into the photos and makes them lean more towards the moody side.”
