St. Peter’s parish holds Corpus Christi procession through town

Photos Courtesy of St. Peter’s Church

St. Peter’s Church held a Corpus Christi procession under beautiful skies on Sunday, June 11. Hundreds of parishioners from St. Peter’s Church and visitors from elsewhere expressed their devotion toward the Holy Eucharist during the annual procession. Corpus Christi processions began in the 14th century as a public profession of the Catholic faith. They are held around the world and are quite elaborate in some European countries. In the picture above, members of different parish groups follow their banners in the parade down Williams Street. Above right, the monstrance holding the Eucharist is carried by Fr. Ivan Sciberras, pastor at St. Peter’s. A monstrance is a vessel specifically used to carry the consecrated eucharistic in processions. The central idea of the parade is to carry the Eucharist at the front of the parade. Behind are children who received their first communion this spring. Bottom right, Fr. Sciberras leads the congregation in prayer.
