Stars in the main arena

W

hen former advanced eventer Vanessa Lawes decided to swap eventing for the show ring she turned to Hursley and Hambledon Hunt Master, Bill smith to find the perfect Middleweight Hunter. the answer came in the form of a striking dapple grey called Castle Haven star aka Fred, who had already qualified for the Royal International Horse show. Despite being a great horsewoman, Vanessa is finding life on the show circuit a whole different experience, but she told me the other competitors, couldn’t be kinder, giving her tips and helping her along the way. after finishing second in the Middleweight Hunter to Katie Jerram at the Derby Meeting, Vanessa may find her new friends a little more coy with their tips. Charlotte McKee

egular reader Charlotte McKee called in at the stand at Hickstead for a chat and I took the opportunity to ask her to let us know how her week went. Charlotte said; “I had a really fun week at Hickstead, I took three horses, all of which did some brilliant rounds. Mirror Image IV (Buster) owned by Liz Parminter was my star of the week, finishing sixth out of 193 in the 1m class on the Wednesday and ninth in the same class out of 136 starters on the saturday. this was a big achievement for both of us, especially considering he stands at 17.2hh and is built like an ocean liner. He competed three days and got into every jump-off. the week before we were due to leave for Hickstead my current horse developed a back problem and we couldn’t get a physio out soon enough, so one of my friends, amber stafford very kindly offered me her horse adamo amerika (Pepper) to take instead. However, this only gave me two days to get used to him before jumping the 1.10m and 1.25m classes at Hickstead. But we clicked very quickly and got into all 1.10m jump-offs and had just a couple of faults in the very strongly built 1.25m classes each day We had a really brilliant, fun week, even with the heat and I am thoroughly looking forward to the RIHs at the end of July where hopefully my horse will be back on form to be able to go.”
