Personally Speaking

Need Competent Legal or Visa Advice?

with Susannah Friis Our 14 year old is not the sporty type. She plays club netball but absolutely hates school sports. You know, the cross country, the athletics days, HPE as a subject up to grade 10 - she hates it all. And I have to agree with her somewhat on the unfairness of it. Fair enough if HPE is an elective just like art, drama or music. But it’s not. It’s compulsory, as are the cross country and athletics days. Don’t get me wrong, I agree that exercise is good for us. But so is art, drama and music. There are many studies and research on the benefits of the arts on us as human beings (there are even degrees for art therapy, drama therapy and music therapy!). Let’s see the sporty kids having to participate in compulsory choir or an art exhibition or a play. Let’s put them out of their comfort zone and expect them to not only enjoy it but to excel! But alas, I doubt that will ever be the case. It’s tempting to write her a note to get her out of sports day or cross country. It’s tempting to just let her stay home for the day (like I know many parents do!). But what is that teaching her? Life is full of things we don’t want to do and I don’t want her growing up thinking that if she doesn’t like something or if a certain thing takes her out of her comfort zone, she can just not do it. When she’s an adult in just a few short years, going to uni and working and then maybe raising a family, there’s an even greater pull towards only doing what she wants. She’ll be able to make her own decisions. So now is the time for her to learn that life doesn’t always call for us to do what we want. If all her childhood she’s been able to ‘get out of ’ things, that will be her default when she’s older. We all know those adults, don’t we? The ones who just flat out refuse to do the hard things or the things that they don’t necessarily enjoy. And I fear we are breeding a generation of people who will only do the things they want to do. By getting our kids out of things and constantly telling them to ‘go for their dreams’ and ‘if that job/person/house/car doesn’t make you feel good simply change it!’, we are telling them that all that matters is how they ‘feel’. And we all know what happens when we live by feelings alone! I have the following quote above my desk: ‘Cease endlessly striving for what you want to do and learn to love what must be done’ (Goethe). Life is a tricky balancing act of chasing our dreams and reaching our potential, and simply doing what must be done, regardless of how it makes us feel. I doubt that the lesson my daughter will take away from having to do sport will be to engage with it after she graduates but she will have learnt another lesson of not shirking the uncomfortable or unpleasant things in life. And that’s worth the moaning we have to endure in the lead up to each sport day!

Monthly Update

by Les Brooks

Any celebration is joyful, however to celebrate Christmas in July is wonderful as you have all the joyfulness without any of the commercial hype. And so it was on Wednesday 5th July, 85 members and friends of the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club, headed off full of joyfulness on board their Coaches for the Coolangatta Surf Club. On arrival at Coolangatta, some members enjoyed a little shopping, while some sat back and enjoyed a coffee in one of the many coffee venues near the club. With the club open, we made our way upstairs for our traditional three course Christmas lunch, as a bonus we were treated to a wonderful view of the Gold Coast. The whole atmosphere of the venue was great and complimented by a delicious meal, served with a wonderful view. As with Christmas, everyone received a present and a thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all. The Club’s ‘Extra Activity’ for July was lunch at the Blue Fin at Inala. We had another great attendance with everyone enjoying their selected lunch and the main topic of conversation was our Christmas in July and the fantastic view from our room of the water and beach. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Lions Richlands Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. Date claimers for the next two meetings are 18th August and 15th September. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Leonie (President) on 0427 846 057 or Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618 to register your interest, email fl50plusc@gmail.com. Opening in September last year, the Lighthouse Community Centre on Woogaroo Street is fast becoming known for it’s generous and practical support of local residents. The latest service to come from the Centre’s doors is a $25 Hamper for those needing a helping hand within the Forest Lake community. Chief instigators of the hampers are Chanel and Angus McKenzie, members of the church and enthusiastic volunteers. “My husband and I thought it would be a great idea to offer affordable food hampers that would meet the everyday household budget for groceries, said Chanel. “And the response from residents has been overwhelming. “We have a small number of volunteers as this initiative is still in it’s infancy, but we are envisioning it to grow quite quickly given the positive response from the community and will need a bigger team. The food hampers, which include a selection of fruit and veges, chiller items, play lunches and dinner meals, are available every Tuesday to Friday from 9.00am until stocks last. No concession card is needed to purchase the $25 food hampers and families are encouraged to limit their purchase to once or twice a week so that no family in need misses out. Donations of volunteer time or goods from local businesses and residents is always welcome and much appreciated. If you’d like to know more about either assisting this worthwhile cause or information about purchasing a $25 hamper, please contact Chanel on 0452 663 911 or drop into the Centre located at 65 Woogaroo Street and visit the office to the right of the building weekdays between 9am and 4pm.

Last month’s Lake Litter day brought out some wonderful volunteers as well as another special addition to the hardworking group, Paul the Duck. “I know there are some locals who have encountered this sweet little duck and others have wondered about his name,” said group founder Lea. “He’s very special to us. “We first met Paul the Duck at a previous litter day when he showed up late and tried to go home in someone’s car. But this month, he put in a very enthusiastic effort, at times swimming across the lake to meet us at various spots that were hard for little duck legs to access and staying close by the group at all times. “At the end of the day, volunteers gathered for a group photo and that was when we noticed our little duck running to join the group so as not to miss out on the photo. “It was then we decided that if this little duck wanted to be a part of the group so badly it was time for a name. Cristal and Paul from The Brisbane City Council Litter Pop Up Shop were attending the morning and when Paul quipped with a chuckle that the duck should be called Paul too, it stuck and Paul the Duck didn’t seem to mind it either. “It’s important to note that as an Australian Wood Duck, Paul the Duck will not be sharing in our morning tea after the litter collection, which, thankfully for us humans, does not consist of his necessary dietary items of grass, herbs, clover and insects.” The next litter collection morning will be Sunday 13 August and all residents are welcome to come along and join in the fun and comraderie that is enjoyed while working to tidy and beautiful Forest Lake’s green spaces. There will be beanies and scarves for any children participating, courtesy of the Forest Lake Crochet and Knitting Group and Mission Possible. The litter collection morning will commence at 8am, meeting at Simple Bliss at the Lake Parklands. There will be a scavenger hunt for the kids to collect safe items from a list and receive a little prize for their efforts. “We hope to see you there and if you happen to meet Paul the Duck show him some kindness as the very important mascot he is.”

Community groups receive a helping hand from Heritage Bank Forest Lake A diverse range of local sporting groups and community organisations have received a helping hand thanks to Heritage Bank Forest Lake Community Branch’s latest funding grants. Branch Manager Mark Newman said, “Being a community branch means a portion of our profits goes back to Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs in the form of grants to community groups and local causes. It’s great to see people embrace the community branch concept. The more people bank with us, the more we’re able to give back – we’re really proud to be a part of such a close-knit community.â€? Some of the branch’s most recent grant recipients include: • Hosana Church Brisbane - $20,000 towards a large LED sign for community alerts and announcements at Lighthouse Community and Event Centre • National Seniors - $1009 for computers • Forest Lake Lions - $11,350 for equipment, shirts and car reg and maintenance • Forest Lake Netball Club - $6,678 for marquees, banners, training shirts • Forest Lake Community Events - $15,000 towards 2017 Community Carols • Richlands/Inala History Society - $2,960 towards computer equipment • Forest Lake Community House Association- $2,200 towards a security camera • Lakes Swimming Club - $1,300 for trophies • Forest Lake Table Tennis Association - $5,567 towards table tennis equipment • Lakes Dragon Boat Association - $7,023 towards a marquee and banners • Forest Lake Uniting Church - $9,000 towards a shed for their trailer • Rotary Club of Forest Lake - $2,750 towards a trailer and signage • Forest Lake Social Golf Club - $4,200 towards club shirts and trophies • Forest Lake Junior AFL Football Club - $7,308 towards a marquee, AFL balls, jerseys and club polo shirts. The LED sign helps connect the community and bring people together, just like Heritage does! We are very thankful.â€? FROM THE DESK OF

Councillor Charles Strunk Forest Lake Ward Councillor

Brisbane City Councils Lord Mayors Budget for 2017/2018 was handed down in July. Lots of questions are being asked by local Forest Lake Ward residents concerned about the well above inflation rate rise and the financial pressure they are already experiencing from the big rate rise last year. This year’s rate rises will see Ellen Grove go up by 4.7%, Inala 6.0%, Forest Lake 1.2 %, Richlands 2.9%, Doolandella 2.1% and Durack 4.6%. However, this budget did deliver some good outcomes by allocating funds towards the Woogaroo Street resurfacing, more Village Parks upgrades, and the Lake Precinct Master Plan that will include a lighting upgrade. The residents of Forest Lake haven’t let the rate increase dampen their community spirit. This months litter pop-up shop and community litter pick-up at the lake was by far one of the best to-date! The cold weather didn’t discourage new volunteers joining us on the day or our new addition to the litter pick-up team Paul the duck who joined us around the lake. A round of applause to Lynne and the Forest Lake Business Growth group for hosting another successful business breakfast this month. These events are for business owners and perfect for anyone who is looking to network with like-minded people. Lynne is more than happy to answer any question, so please feel free to contact her on 0412 765 507. Congratulations on a job well done to Captain Vanessa and Anthony Hunt from the Salvation Army for hosting an insightful free Community Village Connect - crime prevention and community safety engagement event at Creekwood Village at Forest Lake this month. The Inaugural Village Connect event will be rolled out under the auspice of the Salvation Army to each of the villages right around Forest Lake. Residents from Creekwood and around the Forest Lake Ward had a great time speaking with the local police at their regular Police Van, Forest Lake Crime & Community Watch team, Forest Lake Lions members, Vanessa from the WASPs : Forest Lake Junior Rugby Union Club, Forest Lake Salvation Army and myself and my support staff about what our community has to offer. Thank you to everyone who joined in on the day to have a chat and a coffee with us and all the volunteers that helped on the day. I look forward to seeing everyone at the next one. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact my ward support staff at the Forest Lake Ward office on 3407 1211.

ICHLANDS - FOREST LAKE SCOUT GROUP UPDAT BY TA N I A McLAUGH LI N

E

The school holiday period is normally a time when young people relax, hang out with friends or maybe go on a trip with the family. For our Scout family, it was a very busy time. We started off with a fantastic day out at the PCYC Inala Multicultural Youth Day. What an amazing turnout it was, and we were certainly kept busy with young people keen to have a go at our climbing wall. This holiday period is also time for Brisbane Gang Show season. This year was the 66th season of Brisbane Gang Show and the 151 cast of Guides and Scouts certainly put on a spectacular performance, filled with music, circus tricks, dancing, acting and a whole lot of fun. This year, the Gang will be going on the road as we travel to Rockhampton for two performances there. The start of Term 3 means a new term of Scouting fun, friendship and new things to experience and learn. This month our focus was on Environment. Our first outing was a tree planting day with the Inala Bushcare Group at Kev Hooper Park Inala. This is an annual event for us and enjoyed by all who attend. The Inala Bushcare people are doing a beautiful job restoring the creek area through the park. The Joeys headed out to Darling Downs Zoo to learn about some of the animals kept there, and also spent some fun meeting nights learning about the Circle of Life, caring for the environment etc. Cubs started the term with a fitness night to get them moving again after the holidays. Still keen from the tree planting day, they decided to get stuck in to completing their Gardening badges and did some work on recycling too. There was also a big focus on finishing off some loose ends with our Boomerang badge work to get cubs up to their next level. Meanwhile our Scouts were out and about with a hike along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, led by our new Patrol Leader, Isaac Price, and helped by our Assistant Patrol Leader, Hunter McLaughlin. The Scouts were also looking more at our local community and what it means to be a good citizen, including teaching their families more about recycling. Of course, there is always time for movie nights and social time. Page 16 - August 2017 - The Lake News

Algester Update As you may have heard, the Queensland Redistribution Commission recently conducted a review of our state’s electoral boundaries, which has resulted in some changes to our local community. Most of Forest Lake will now be in the Premier’s electorate of Inala, except for one small pocket between Blunder Creek and the Logan Motorway, which will remain in the Algester electorate. I have met many wonderful people during my time as your local member, and there are some great local volunteer organisations that form the fabric of our community. I was so glad to hear the Salvation Army were helping out the new local Men’s Shed group by allowing them to use the shed on their premises. Organisations like the Forest Lake Men’s Shed do a fantastic job bringing people together, and having found their new home at the Salvation Army they will be able to continue their valuable work in the community. If you are part of or know of any community groups – whether they be local sports clubs, cultural groups or social groups – our government’s We Are Queensland Small Grants Program they may be eligible for a grant ranging from $5000 to $20,000. This initiative is designed to connect our communities and shine a spotlight on the diversity in our great state, and is an amazing opportunity for local community organisations to gain funding and deliver more activities and events for Forest Lake. The We Are Queensland Small Grants Program is accepting applications until Friday 11 August, and can be completed online via www.qld.gov.au/weareqld. Here, you’ll also find more information about the initiative.

South West Brisbane Stamp Club Update by Marius, South West Brisbane Stamp Club

Queensland’s first stamp One hundred and fifty-seven years ago, the colony of Queensland released its first stamp. It was 1 May 1860 and Queensland had just gained its independence as a colony from New South Wales the previous year. The subject on the stamp, as was usual on many of the colonies stamps, was Queen Victoria. What made this a stand out stamp was that it used a portrait painted by Alfred Chalon. This portrait of the young queen was used by a number of the British colonies around the world but it is the design used on the Queensland stamp which made it the most noteworthy. It is designs like this which show these stamps as actual works of art. These stamps are extremely collectable with a wide range of values and colours. Fortunately it is not expensive to form a collection of these 100+ year old stamps. As president of the South West Brisbane Stamp Club, I can offer mentoring for anyone wishing to start a collection of these or any other stamps. It’s a great hobby for both young and old. You can contact me, Marius, by calling 0410 366 685.

Forest Lake Magpies Club Update by Debra Smith Refreshed from the school holiday break, our teams have swung back into action. With the end of season not too far away, the teams are giving it their all to try to reach the semi-finals. Prior to the July school holidays on Sunday 18 June, in conjunction with our junior games, we held our fundraiser for the Motor Neurone Disease Association of Qld (MND). This was our way of showing some support for one of our lovely volunteers diagnosed with this dreadful disease. We were pleased to be able to present Lisa Rayner, Fundraising and Communications Manager for MND Queensland, with a cheque for $1000 on top of the cash in the donation containers. Thanks to Milton Dick MP who attended to offer his support. He will be sporting his new socks and MND cap as he jogs around Canberra. A special thanks to 5 Star Sports Browns Plains for the $50 gift voucher for our raffle and to Vanessa and her team from Zarraffas Heathwood for coming along to support the event and handing out balloons and coffee vouchers. On a sadder note, the committee and members of the club wish to extend our condolences to one of our former refs, Matty Wright, and his family who recently lost their two year old son. Our thoughts are with you all during this very difficult time. We are always looking for people to join our volunteer family. This could be as a coach, trainer, team manager, touch judge, canteen helper, groundsman or even committee members. If you are interested in helping out for the remainder of this season or wish to express interest for next year, please send an email to admin@forestlakejrlfc.com.au.

Family Focus

with Mark Mackay

Last month, a report appeared on the ABC News website entitled, “’Submit to your husbands’: Women told to endure domestic violence in the name of God.” It detailed a tragic and sad history of people excusing domestic violence in the name of God and twisting the Bible to justify that violence. It opened a conversation for many in the Christian community that was already happening but grew as a result of that report. Now it needs to be continued and deepened. Domestic abuse is vile and evil. Many families are caught behind a false veil of privacy. One of the most prominent social maxims in our culture is, “what happens behind closed doors stays behind closed doors.” Whether because of threats, disempowerment, embarrassment, or other reasons, we are left with the disturbing estimate by the ABS that 60% of domestic violence cases go unreported. What is even more disturbing is that one recent report says, “domestic violence easily exceeded street crime as the fastest growing form of assault.” These statistics make for uncomfortable reading but we need to see them because it is estimated that one in three Australian women over the age of 15 have experienced physical or sexual violence at some time in their lives. Additionally, one in three victims of domestic violence are men. Can there really be any doubt that domestic violence is something that must be a matter to families? The first important thing we can do to address this epidemic is acknowledge it. Let’s bring it out of the dark and show people that we want to address it. One of the great commands of the Bible is to “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed.” (Isaiah 1:17) Domestic violence and abuse disempowers, devalues and destroys people. Our desire is to do the opposite – to empower, value and build up people. Anyone who tries to use the Bible to justify domestic abuse completely distorts the message of selfless love that Jesus lived. Domestic abuse is never ok – whether in the forms of physical, sexual, financial, emotional, verbal or spiritual. What are some practical steps you can take? • If you are experiencing domestic abuse, know this: you do not need to accept it! You can go to the Police and get help. Call the national helpline at 1800 737 732; • If you are an abuser, know this: You need to stop! You need to get some help. Go to the 1800respect.org.au to find out what is available; • If you know someone who is being abused or suspect it may be happening, or just want to know more, go to 1800respect. org.au for information. Domestic abuse needs to be brought out of the shadows and we all need to do our part to address it as families, community groups, churches, governments and as a society. Domestic abuse is never ok! Let’s set a new legacy for the future generations. Speaking on behalf of Forest Lake Baptist Church, we believe domestic abuse of any kind is completely unacceptable. We want to be a place of safety, of healing, of authentic community and a place where we show “Every person is important to God.”

FOREST LAKE RSL Sub-Branch Update

by Alan Greig g

Only 21 years after the cessation of WWI, we were to witness the outbreak of WWII, the largest global conflict ever. Germany and its allies, Italy and Japan, were pitted against the allied Nations of the British Empire and the USA. Communist Russia had made a pact with Adolf Hitler (The German Fuhrer) to divide Europe between them and thus stood aside while Germany invaded Poland, Holland, Belgium and France. Britain was thus left to fight alone. However, Germany reneged on its pact with Russia and invaded it in 1941 resulting in Russia demanding, and getting, Allied help. In the same year, Japan, which had at that time conquered most of South East Asia down to New Guinea, attacked the US base at Pearl Harbour in Hawaii and thus brought America into the war. American troops, ships and planes were based in Australia to begin the campaign to defeat Japan. Australian forces, fighting in North Africa and Syria against the Axis forces, were recalled when Japan directly menaced Australia in 1942. The Japanese tried to take Port Moresby as a base, presumably to prepare to invade North Australia. I say presumably because there is little evidence to support the supposition that Japan wanted to invade Australia. Nevertheless, the graziers in North Queensland were directed to prepare for a scorched earth policy and retreat to the south. The battle of the Coral Sea stopped the Japanese invasion fleet, whilst on the land Australian conscripts, militia and the AIF fought rugged battles on the Kokoda track and in the Owen Stanley ranges. The Japanese were deficient in logistical support due to having lost the battle of the Coral Sea. It is worth noting that a Queensland unit, the 61st Battalion the Queensland Cameron Highlanders, were the first to defeat the Japanese, on the land, at the battle of Milne Bay. The tide was turned and the island hopping campaign in the Pacific pushed the Japanese back to their homeland. The European war ended in April 1945 when allied forces entered Berlin. In August 1945, Atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki which forced the Japanese Emperor to surrender. WWII cost about 30 million lives. Australian casualties were 27,000 killed and 23,400 wounded; significantly more than the costly WWI. But the next phase was yet to come when a cold war erupted between Russia and the Allies. I shall write about the Berlin Airlift in a future article; a little known operation that beat the objective of Russia to force the allies out of Berlin. We will be hosting a dinner to honour Vietnam Veterans to be held at the Durack and Inala Bowls and RSL Club on Bowhill Road, Corner of Blunder Road on 18 August at 5.30pm. We want to honour as many RSL Vietnam Veteran members and their partners as we can, but places are limited. Please RSVP to Steve Ford on 3818 2902 as soon as possible if you wish to attend. The July Branch meeting showed the depth of talent in our membership as we enjoyed a performance by The Pollywafflers. Members Pam Healy and Pat Hetherington combined their fabulous skills creating a fantastic puppet set and four short plays themed Seniors & Computers, Speed Dating, Scams & Elder Abuse performed for the first time. These performances were then followed by an enthusiastic group of seniors going through their daily exercise routine. Plenty of laughter for all. On the calendar in August we will celebrate our sixth birthday on the 10th. There will be cake, of course, and a nice surprise too. Many of our members will be attending the ticketed Seniors Week Event on Tuesday 22nd August. This is a combined function organised by National Seniors, Fifty Plus and Probus Forest Lake. This event for Seniors will be a High Tea and entertainment. Sponsorship from our local politicians and other generous supporters has helped to make this celebration possible. Coming up in September is the branch meeting on Thursday 14 September followed by the AGM and a guest speaker. We have planned another away bus trip for September, which will be ‘Toowoomba in Springtime’, for four days and three nights. The group will depart on Friday 22 September and return on Monday 25 September. The itinerary includes the Carnival of Flowers, Toowoomba Airport, Pittsworth and much more. National Seniors Forest Lake provides a friendly welcome to all ladies and gentlemen in the 50 something age group. There are many benefits of membership with National Seniors. The National Seniors website is a great source for helpful information. Next Meeting date is Thursday August 10 at Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands, 9.30am sign in, 10am start. Sixth birthday celebrations and morning tea will be followed by guest speaker, Ian Henschke, National Seniors Chief Advocate. Join us if you can for lunch at The Lion after the meeting. To our members who are unwell or recovering from surgery, our best wishes for a return to good health. Check out our Branch website www.forestlakenationalseniors.org.au/ For further information about our Branch please contact either Julie 3278 7274 or Val 3372 4405.

Forest Lake Probus Club Update by Marge Breitenbach

What an unusual July meeting. Probians were very fortunate to have Courtney Cleary, granddaughter of Probian Myra, perform J.S.Bach’s Petita for violin. It was her performance of this piece of music that saw her win the prestigious Tait Foundation Award for the Most Outstanding Music Student In Great Britain. Courtney was also chosen as the Australian Artist to perform at the Commonwealth Day Celebration at Westminster Abbey in front of the Queen Elizabeth II. It certainly was an honour for the Club to have such a talented musician pay us a visit. We wish her the very best in her classical career. The Probians also celebrated the 90th birthday of Bert Boock who is a Foundation Member of the Club and also holds Life Membership. The monthly guest speaker was David Earley, author of Beneath Blades a pilot’s journal of his experiences as a helicopter pilot. His flying career spans a period of 46 years and has been an amazing journey from Arnhem Land to Vietnam, from the USA to Papua New Guinea, from Irian Jaya to Nepal, to Moscow and beyond. He originally trained as a navigator on a DC3 and in 1968 graduated as a pilot from Amberley and so started his amazing flying career. David has also served on the Aviation Directorate in Canberra with the rank of Captain post Vietnam. David related some interesting tales of the fatalistic Russians and their amazing Aviation Museum which displays everything they ever built. He explained Pinnacle Training on the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. We learnt about rock-filled clouds - danger of high mountains and landing on a one-way ski-jump airstrip. From medical evacuations to delivering Bibles, border protection to airborne electrical maintenance, David is now Chief Executive Officer of a major helicopter company. His talk was informative with some gripping moments of bated breath, as well as entertaining. Barry passed a vote of thanks. We are extending an invitation to all retirees and semi-retirees to pay us a visit for fun, friendship and companionship. We meet the second Tuesday of the month at 10am at Forest Lake Uniting Church Hall, Waterford Road, Ellen Grove. For further details contact Membership Officer Judith on 3278 8042 or President Fran on 0403 882 030. Page 24 - August 2017 - The Lake News

$65 000 in grants to local sporting clubs Community organisations in our local area are set to benefit from the latest round of Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants. The Forest Lake Junior Australian Football Club has received over $30,000 to upgrade playing facilities. Our young football enthusiasts will also benefit from almost $35,000 in funding for the Normanby-Centenary Junior Rugby League Football Club to complete upgrades. Local sports clubs do so much for the community and my Government is ensuring they have funds needed for projects that may have otherwise been out of reach. The Gambling Community Benefit Fund is Queensland’s largest one-off grants program, distributing about $53 million a year to communities. Community groups can apply online for these grants, worth between $500 and $35,000. I encourage local organisations in Forest Lake to apply for the next round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, with applications now open. For more information, visit http://www. justice.qld.gov.au/grants Up to $20,000 to hire jobseekers Forest Lake businesses are now able to benefit from my Government’s Back to Work program, with up to $20,000 available to hire unemployed jobseekers. With over 1,300 businesses in the local area, Back to Work can give local employers the confidence to take on someone new, while also helping jobseekers to gain employment. The successful Back to Work program has already helped more than 5,000 jobseekers across regional Queensland and has now expanded to South East Queensland. Businesses in Forest Lake could receive a support payment of $15,000 for employing a long-term unemployed jobseeker or $20,000 for employing a young unemployed jobseeker. I encourage local businesses to take advantage of this worthwhile employment program. For more information, visit www.qld.gov.au/backtowork Committed to helping seniors My Government is committed to strengthening consumer protection for seniors in retirement villages and manufactured home parks. I am committed to standing up for the rights of all members of our community, including our seniors. Speaking with local residents, it’s become clear that the rights of people who live in retirement villages just aren’t in line with the expectations of the community and changes need to be made. That’s why my Government is committed to boosting and toughening consumer protection for seniors living in retirement villages, as part of our new Housing Strategy 2017-2027. I thank all those in our community who have spoken with me about this issue and the ongoing advocacy to support our seniors.

During the recent holiday break, the Wasps enjoyed a Family Fun Day; a wonderful way to get together before heading into the back half of the season. The Fun Day was held to support Malik Assoum, one of our Little Stingers (pictured below), who had his first ever haircut in aid of sick children who need wigs. We had lots of helpers on the day and must thank Jolly Locks mobile hairdressing who donated Malik’s haircut; the Hon. Leeanne Enoch who donated a hamper prize; Reds sponsor St George who also gave us a special prize pack, balloons, giveaways and Happy the Dragon; and the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund-Forest Lake Ward, our supporter Cr Charles Strunk, for funding our bouncy castle and fairy floss. It was a wonderful day and such a worthwhile cause. Little Stingers is our program for Under 5s, who work under a coach and manager, just like the big kids, to train in working together, playing safely and rugby skills. Also like the big kids, they wear a Wasps uniform, have their own ball and boots and are part of their very own team. They even get a team photo and trophy at the end of the 15 week program! A lot of our Little Stingers then go on to play in our U6s. It is too late now for this year, but please contact us if you wish to put your name down for 2018. Also during the holiday break, our U9s travelled down to Runaway Bay very early in the morning to take part in the City vs Surf, Australia’s largest grassroots rugby carnival. Carnivals provide fantastic memories for our juniors, as they get to play new teams and have quite a few games back to back, in a colourful, festival-like atmosphere. Hanging out in between games is a great chance to relax, bond and run around in the sun. It’s just one of the many great opportunities our players have had this season. Our teams are now relishing the last training and games for the season in the lead-up to Trophy Day later this month. All of our teams have enjoyed great results, with our cracking U8 outfit in particular remaining undefeated - and welcoming two new players to the fold. Our registrations have stayed open and kept growing all season; testament to the supportive environment and strong coaching we have here at the Wasps. Keep an eye out in our next update for information on our Viva7s summer program! Page 26 - August 2017 - The Lake News

WITH DAVE JOHNSON B. COM C.A.

Dave is a Chartered Accountant with a keen interest in personal finance issues

The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia puts out a very interesting publication on a quarterly basis, of how much income is needed in retirement to fund either a modest or comfortable lifestyle, in turn depending on whether you are single or a couple. The Detailed Budget Breakdowns document lists all manner of potential expenses and, based on research, the estimated amounts typically incurred on a weekly basis. The publication ASFA Retirement Standard gives examples of what is meant by modest and its corresponding equivalent for a comfortable lifestyle. For example, looking at the relevant figures for a couple, the March 2017 publication suggests that an income of $34,855 should be sufficient to fund a modest lifestyle, whereas an income of $59,971, which is 72% higher, should allow for a comfortable lifestyle in retirement. Modest essentially implies being able to afford basic things and activities. Comfortable on the other hand means being able to have, amongst other things, a reasonable level of private health insurance, driving a reasonable car and taking domestic holidays together with the occasional overseas trip. More specific comparison between comfortable and modest, aimed at looking at some practicalities, suggests: • affording bottled wine as opposed to cask wine; • one annual holiday in Australia as opposed to fairly short breaks in close proximity to where you live; and • affording good clothes as opposed to reasonable clothes. So how much is needed to perhaps fund a comfortable lifestyle for a couple in retirement? An amount of $640,000 is suggested, assuming of course that your accommodation is paid for, that is, you have paid off the mortgage and not paying rent. It is assumed that all of this capital will eventually be drawn down and that the couple will become eligible at a later stage for a part pension. Interestingly, for a modest lifestyle a couple only needs a fraction of this, being $35,000, as the current age pension and supplements will provide the bulk of their expenditure commitments. It makes for interesting reading but it is always necessary to factor in your own interpretation of comfortable and modest alongside your specific goals and aspirations for this stage of your life.

Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling

Round One of the Club Championships was held at the Oxley Golf Club on Sunday 16th July with 33 members competing. We also welcomed a new member to our Club, Dan Jones; welcome Dan. As usual, the Club Championship games are Stroke events, and some good scores were recorded. Some overnight rain softened up the course, resulting in little run from drives and approach shots. Overall, the course was in excellent condition with fairways and greens never looking better. With the rain staying away the day turned into an absolute cracker, if not a little warm later in the day. Prizewinners on the day were: A Grade - winner Alan Frost with net 69; runner-up Josh Wilson with net 69 on count back. B Grade – winner Chris Peacock with net 77; runner-up Kirrily Brooke with net 78. Long drive exponents were Mick Morley (A), Marc Steward (B) and Kirrily Brooke (Ladies) on hole 11. Josh Wilson won the nearest approach on hole 6 and nearest the pin winners were Josh Wilson (hole 5), Steve Donnell (hole 13) and Dan McKay (holes 3 and 9). If you play golf and are interested in joining our club, please contact Pat on 0417 213 659. Thanks go to our Club Sponsors, Heritage Community Bank Branch at Forest Lake, Jindalee Golf Club Professional and the Drummond Golf Club Underwood.

Hookworm are tiny worms, 16mm long and very thin, which live attached to the intestine of dogs and cats. In reasonable numbers they can cause illness and even death. There are two species of hookworm which affect dogs and cats in Australia. Ancylostoma species are found more in the north and Uncinaria species more in Victoria and Tasmania. It is a parasite well evolved for survival. The eggs quickly embryonate and larva hatch and develop into a stage capable of infection either by ingestion or skin penetration. The adult worms attach to the small intestine and feed off blood and the intestinal wall. Young puppies are the most severely affected by hookworm although dogs and cats of any age can be carriers and/or become ill. The clinical signs are diarrhoea, often with blood and mucous, anaemia, lethargy and poor coat condition. Young puppies may fail to thrive, never reach their size potential and in severe cases will die. Puppies as young as one to two weeks old can be affected due to transmission of hookworm in milk from untreated mothers. A faecal sample can be tested by your vet clinic for hookworm eggs. Hookworms produce a large number of distinct eggs and can be easily identified. Eliminating the worm with an effective wormer and then a regular worming regime is the treatment. If your puppy is anaemic or very lethargic, then they may need to be hospitalised and given a life saving blood transfusion. Hookworms are rarely found in people but are significant as a cause of cutaneous larval migrans from larva penetrating human skin. For both human and pet health, it is important to prevent contamination of your yard. Picking up dog faeces and regularly cleaning your cat’s litter tray will prevent build up of eggs in your environment. Bin faeces rather than place it in your garden. Preventing hookworm burdens is very important in Queensland and much more satisfactory for you and your pet than dealing with a hookworm infection. Hookworm can be easily prevented by worming with a good quality wormer and following an appropriate regime that is initiated when you first visit your vet.

Forest Lake Lions Club by Kim Grierson Update The Forest Lake Lions Club recently geared up for their 25th year in Forest Lake with their annual Changeover Dinner at the Blue Fin Fishing Club. The evening saw incoming President April Lindel installed by Past District Governor Arthur Witheyman. Lion April thanked out-going President Lion Jonathan Slack and his board and all those members who assisted our wonderful Lions organisation in the 2016-2017 year. April’s theme for 2017-18 is supporting child initiatives. Her first step in this regard was to present a donation to the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Foundation. Every year in Australia over 800 children are diagnosed with childhood cancer. Twenty percent of those children do not survive their battle. That is the disheartening reality facing many Australian families every day. Over the years, with the help of people just like you, the ALCCRF has raised over $10 million dollars for childhood cancer research - and has supported countless Australian organisations leading the fight against childhood cancer. Under April’s leadership, we believe that every child deserves a chance at a healthy, happy life and every parent deserves to watch their child grow up healthy and well. We look forward to supporting such initiatives as the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Foundation in our community. Over the coming year, Lion President April is committed to club members having fun and building friendship as we serve Forest Lake. She is also committed to building our Club’s membership. Would you like to get involved with the Lions? • Come and say hello at our barbecues at the Forest Lake Community Markets on the third Sunday of each month. • If you would like to find out about becoming a Forest Lake Lion, call Stuart Grierson on 0418 735 190. • Let us know of any local needs that we could support. Send us a message via our Facebook page: www. facebook.com/LionsClubForestLake.

Garden Group

by John Prout The last month of winter is here and the lengthening days bring us the promise that spring is just around the corner as the garden sees the first stirring of the new season. August also bring those cool westerly winds and the Royal National Show when our country friends come to town. When visiting the RNA make sure you check out the new and improved horticultural display that is being held in the old museum. Many hours of work have gone setting-up this display by many of the local garden clubs. What a great bus trip we had last month visiting the Heritage Winery Estate in Mt Tamborine to celebrate Christmas in July. After lunch we visited the many arts and crafts shops in Gallery Walk which was also a good opportunity to walk off some of the extra calories from lunch. There are so many different types of shops and new treasures were bought home by many. Our next bus trip will be on 14 September when we travel ‘across the sea’ to Stradbroke Island. Make sure you book early as I’m sure the bus will be filled for this trip. Flyers will be available at our August meeting. What exactly is a weed? Definitions abound but a weed is generally considered to be a plant that is growing where it is not wanted. As winter comes to an end, it often seems that the weeds are about to take over the garden. Weeds can be eliminated by mulching your garden beds. This is also the time when bindii and other weeds such as cudweed, clover, dandelions, oxalis and cape weed start to appear in our gardens and lawn. There are many eco-friendly fertilizers on the market to help you eliminate these unwanted plants. If space is a problem or you want to fill a couple of spaces on a patio, hanging baskets look delightful but need very special care. Those in the shade are relatively easy to look after but, if hanging in the sun, baskets dry out very quickly. Wire baskets with fibre or bark linings are attractive but it’s wise to put a sheet of plastic inside the liner. Poke a few holes in the plastic sheet to allow drainage before filling the hanging basket with potting mix. After planting and watering, any plastic sheet that is visible can be trimmed away. The plastic sheet won’t be seen but will make a huge difference to the water-holding ability of the basket. Our next meeting, on 1 August, will be the Annual General Meeting and afterwards, Noel Burdette will give an interesting presentation on composting. On 5 September, our guest speaker will be Jenny Holloway from The Frog Society – should be a ‘croaking time’. Hope you can join us and meet other friendly gardeners from Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!

Next meeting Tuesday, 1 August at 9.30 for a 10am start. Uniting Church Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove. For more information call John Prout 3288 3131 or Jill Lowe 0403 002 143.

Everywhere I go throughout our local community, one of the most commonly raised issues is the NBN rollout. Almost every day my office receives phone calls with reports of slow speeds, drop outs or simply no connection at all. Due to this overwhelming community feedback, the first NBN Crisis Meeting was held last month for local residents to raise their concerns in person. Joining me was Michelle Rowland MP the Shadow Minister for Communications alongside State Candidate for the seat of Jordan, Charis Mullen. Almost 100 local residents attended and shared their experiences of how the failed NBN rollout had affected them. Among the stories shared were examples of where homes had been completely cut off from any internet service for months at a time. I also heard from residents who have been forced to undertake their studies using the wi-fi at local restaurants because their new NBN service is simply not up to standard. The latest information from the NBN company indicates that as of November 2016 less than half the homes in our community had access to the NBN. The Government first promised all homes would be connected by this time which has left many residents frustrated and angry at the rollout. Coming together as a group at last month’s NBN Crisis Meeting was the first step in many to holding those responsible accountable for the failed rollout. Due to ongoing community demand, another NBN Crisis Meeting is also planned for later this month. More details on this are available on my website at www.miltondick.com.au. If you have any NBN troubles or if there is anything else I am able to assist with, please get in touch with my office on 3879 6440 or send an email to Milton.Dick.MP@aph.gov.au.
