he most anticipated issue of the year—the annual Best of Maple Grove— sheds light on the people, businesses and services that make up the fabric of our incredible community.

We appreciate those who participated in this year’s readers’ poll. The top three vote-getters in each category become finalists and are announced in the spring on our website, and the top votegetter is the winner and is announced in the summer on our website and in our magazine. Once votes are tabulated, our editorial team fact-checks the address and contact information for each finalist. If a finalist is no longer a valid selection due to a closed business, etc., the next highest vote-getter(s) moves up to become a finalist.

(2 shots) of tequila 6–8 blackberries 1 Tbsp. agave syrup 2 limes juiced sugar for the rim optional lime wheel for garnish • Use a lime wedge to line ¼ of the rim with juice and roll it in sugar • In a separate glass, muddle the blackberries and the juice of one lime together • Using a handheld strainer, filter the contents into a cocktail shaker • Pour in the tequila and the juice of the second lime • Add ice and shake for 10-15 seconds • Strain the mixture into the sugar-rimmed glass and pour the “used” ice on top • Garnish with a lime wheel and enjoy!

Preserving the Past Volunteers highlight the city’s rich history.

“WE’RE NOT THAT OLD AS A CITY, TECHNICALLY,” says

Alan Madsen, president of the Maple Grove Historic Preservation Society. Originally home to the Ojibwe tribe, then the Winnebago tribe, after their relocation by the U.S. Federal Government, the area of Maple Grove developed as a township after the settlement of explorers Pierre Bottineau and Louis Gervais in 1851. In 1954, it became a village and, 20 years later, Maple Grove officially became a city.

Since the city’s inception, community members have accumulated items of historical interest, sometimes passed down one generation to the next. However, when it’s time to start downsizing, many choose to contact the Maple Grove Historic Preservation Society to see if any items are of interest.

“Most of [the collection] has been from people donating to us,” Madsen says. “What happens is either mom and pop are aging, and looking to divest of all their belongings, and so they contact us or the kids themselves contact us to see if we would accept the dona-

The society, which was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 1994, keeps its collection closely related to Maple Grove or Osseo and often rotates their historical displays to reflect the ever-expanding collection.

Madsen’s favorite pieces?

“We’ve got two 1880 buggies, [in] very, very good shape,” he says, noting they were donated by a gentleman who lives in Brooklyn Park.

“We have a very old sleigh from the late 1800s. We have a 1909 piano ... a person could still play it. We’ve got a 100-year-old roll-top desk.”

Of its wide range of historical artifacts, Madsen says most of the society’s items are over 50 years old, and many are from the late 1800s and early 1900s.

If you’re looking to see these items in person, Madsen says there’s an open house the second Sunday of every month. The society also contributes to Maple Grove Days and sets up shop in the garage space of the old public works building. “One of the highlights will be a display of wedding gowns that date way back,” he says. “We’ll also have an individual coming in to do a demonstration on wood carving and woodworking.” MG

WHEN SUMMER FINALLY ARRIVES, the local outdoor sports

facilities are almost constantly in use.

Youth baseball teams head to the fields, golfers hit the links and others lace up their tennis shoes, grab their rackets and head to the court. In the last few years, there’s been a new sport filling up

local courts: pickleball.

Created in 1965, pickleball is a sport for anyone and everyone. It’s almost identical to tennis, except the courts and paddles are smaller, and it’s played with a wiffle ball. It’s been a popular activity for communities in southern states like Arizona or Florida for a number of

years, and now it’s catching on here at home. “It’s a brand-new sport to people and it’s not something you play growing up,” says Liz Faust, the City of Maple Grove recreation program specialist for seniors. “I believe it’s the fastest growing sport in the country.”

is due to the fact it can be enjoyed at any age. The sport is also included in physical education curriculums at some schools. “The wiffle ball flies much slower than a tennis ball,” Faust says.

“That makes it a lot easier for everyone.”

Maple Grove has a few outdoor pickleball courts at Lakeview Knolls and Central Parks, along with indoor courts at the Maple Grove Community Center and the Maple Grove Middle School gym. These courts stay busy throughout the year, and there have been upwards of 100 players at the middle school gym at one time. Due to the popularity and crowds at facilities, the city has plans to expand.

Lakeview Knoll Park will be getting 10–15 new courts in response to the pickleball boom—and there is a possibility of adding parking and restrooms as well.

Construction is anticipated to be completed during the summer of 2023.

Faust says having good facilities is important, as it gives people a place to stay active and fit. The facilities also build a sense of community—people can connect with other locals and play a game or two. “Having places to gather and enjoy a competitive atmosphere is good,” Faust says.

There are no signs of pickleball slowing down, especially with the increase in facilities. As it continues to grow, Faust says the city may consider increasing the indoor options as well. For now, players will enjoy the outdoor courts in the warm summer weather while it lasts, and Faust encourages everyone to give it a shot. “It’s an intergenerational opportunity,” she says. “It’s a great sport for people of all ages.” MG

Art is all around us whether we realize it or not. As something that is so integral to our daily lives, I thought it was important to highlight some of the ways our community members are embracing their talents in a variety of mediums.

COLOR ME MINE

“When you take something away like art or music, you are not whole anymore,” says Christina Hankins, artist and owner of Color Me Mine.

“It is very important to have different levels of creativity, you don’t have to be an artist to create some-

thing. It adds something to us that contributes to our well-being.”

Purchasing the space just five years ago, she says it was the perfect opportunity to combine her love for art and education. The studio is an outlet for community members of all ages and artistic backgrounds to pick and paint their own masterpieces in a stressfree setting.

Choosing between an array of ceramics (the most popular are figurines and useable objects such as mugs) and a selection of glaze colors, visitors can decorate the object to their liking before it is fired in

the kiln. (A process that takes about a week and requires a scheduled pickup days after creation.) “It is quite amazing to see the transformation,” Hankins says.

NORTHWESTERN HIGH SCHOOL ART EXHIBITION The Northwestern High School Art Exhibition at North Hennepin Community College offers a glimpse inside the creativity of the next generation while also providing a way for emerging high school

artists to reach larger audiences.

“There is a larger community support for what [young artists] do, and they value what individuals make as a form of expression and visual communication … It is encouraging and beneficial for [the artists] to have that exposure and it adds a level of validation to their work,” says Josh Woof, the North Hennepin Community College gallery director and art professor.

“It means so much more in terms of communicating and expressing themselves individually.”

This year, the collection showcased over 80 pieces from students at ten area high schools: Anoka, Elk River, Maple Grove, Osseo, Park Center, Parnassus Preparatory, Prairie Seeds Academy, Rogers, St Michael-Albertville and Zimmerman. “The amount of skill, dedication and use of new mediums coming into high school programs is really inspiring,” he says.

create something eye-catching from a simple lump of clay. His desire to learn the craft inspired him to take a variety of ceramic classes throughout his high school career—turning to the studio as a stress reliever.

His collection showcases a circular vase inspired by a donut, a pitcher that features an innovative handle made from salvaged materials from the woodshop class at his school and a vase with an etching method emulating the pattern of waves. Recognized for his talents, “It was a big surprise, and it was really cool to see that my art could inspire other to do more,” he says.

“My inspiration for this artwork is the constant shift of positive and negative emotion families, peers and educators felt during quarantine,” Seth says about his piece.

Experimenting with a variety of lighting techniques, the exhibit provided the opportunity to showcase his hard work and helped him gain confidence in his artistic ability as a creator.

“I know my artwork is creating a voice for me and many other Asian Americans,” he says. “The values of art also allow me to express myself, my likes, dislikes and feelings.”

For Vidhi, art is what makes her feel whole. Turning to painting and dance, she says these forms help showcase her uniqueness as an individual. “I think [art] helps with your identity and expressing your feelings. Any form of art is a way of expressing who you are behind the closed doors,” she says.

STILL SERVING: AN ART SHOW BY MILITARY VETERANS The Maple Grove Art Center aims at making fine art, theater and music more visible and accessible to the community. “I think art itself is important. It can be healing, it can bring people together for those who might not have ever done something together,” says Lise Spence-Parsons, the president and treasurer of the Maple Grove Art Center.

Partnering with the Osseo/ Maple Grove American Legion Post 172, the exhibit showcases art created by local veterans from all branches of the military who have and continue to serve our country.

It includes pieces from a former Vietnam War veteran who formerly captured combat scenes for the military, a medical doctor who currently provides health services to vets for free and more. “Featuring veteran’s art is just another way of bringing public awareness and support for the military and veteran community,” says Kristy Janigo, U.S. Army National Guard veteran and contrbuting artist. “It is a way for us to come together and we are in your community and hoping that an event like this sheds some light on the heroism that is exists here.”

Born out of a family passion for musical theater, Bunce Performing Arts was established to provide an affordable, high-quality option for emerging actors as young as 10 years old. In just seven weeks, the organization develops their own cast, stage design, costumes and choreography for seven free public performances in the comfort of a (large) backyard every July. This year they will be performing Oliver.

“It is more than just our longing to provide a free show for the community and sharing a message of hope and encouragement, the other side of that is what is happening with the cast,” says Lori Bunce, co-founder of the organization. “There is a great value in that experience of learning that you are capable more than you ever thought, being a part of something that is bigger than yourself … you are a part of a team.”

Since its inception, the summer program has provided a space for

individuals to build confidence, create community and gain professional experience for individuals.

“These are places where people can blossom and grow,” business manager Rhonda Roe says.

In addition to their summer show, Bunce Performing Arts also developed The BEAT (Bunce Educational Adventure Theatre), an after-school program for elementary and middle school students to learn and perform their own short production after just ten practices.

Think: new Quick Breakfast selections, an all-new drink menu and upgraded classics, like pancakes, waffles and French toast topped with signature pie fillings, such as French silk, banana cream and triple berry.

For brunch devotees, Granite City Brewery will continue offering its Sunday Lawless Brunch, featuring creation stations, a carving table, weekly chef specials, bottomless Mimosas and a Bloody Mary experience that has developed a devoted

Beyond Impossible Local restaurants serve up plant-based burger options WRITTEN BY DANIEL HUSS

has created healthier alternatives to an American classic—the hamburger. Stacked next to standard beef, Impossible and Beyond “meat” actually hold many similar characteristics.

The Beyond Meat burger is a pea and rice-based product that is 100 percent plant-based. It is also GMO-free, glutenfree and soy free. A simple quarterpound burger packs 20 grams of protein at just 230 calories.

Its competitor, Impossible meat, is a soy-based product that also includes a genetically engineered compound that mimics meat-like qualities and characteristics. Hormone and antibiotic free, a quarter-pound Impossible burger packs 19 grams of protein—comparable to the amount of protein found in an 80/20 quarter-pound beef burger.

While both products tout health benefits (zero cholesterol and double the fiber), both claim to be better for the environment. According to the Impossible Foods website, Impossible “meat” uses 96 percent less land, 87 percent less water and generates 89 percent fewer green-

house gas emissions. The Beyond burger equates to using 99 percent less water, 93 percent less land and 46 percent less energy in production., In addition to these environmental factors, there is also the animal welfare part to all of this, which succeeds, for some, most everything. No cows are used or harmed in the production of Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods burger patties.

3 SQUARES RESTAURANT

The Beyond burger is the plant-based burger of choice at 3 Squares Restaurant.

“When we cook the burger at 500 degrees on a flat top it turns out nice and crispy.

For me, it’s a texture thing and the Beyond burger is really close to beef,” says Brandon Cunningham, the chef at 3 Squares.

The 3 Squares Veggie Burger is topped with cheddar cheese, tomato basil mayo, caramelized onions, lettuce and tomato.

The restaurant also serves a plantbased (crumbled Beyond meat) pomodoro pasta and a Beyond chicken Asian salad. “I’m a red-meat guy and I prefer

the Beyond chicken nugget to a regular chicken nugget,” Cunningham says.

MALONE’S BAR AND GRILL

Malone’s Bar and Grill decided on the Beyond burger after a taste test that featured Beyond, Impossible and beef options. “I knew what I was eating was plant-based,” says general manager Nastar Motlagh. “If I didn’t, I’m not sure I could tell the difference. Colors and textures were almost the same.”

On the menu for nearly two years, Motlagh adds that it is important to cater to vegans and gluten sensitive customers. Malone’s signature veggie burger is billed as its “Vegan Beyond Burger.” The gluten and dairy free option sandwiches a Beyond patty, shredded lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole and vegan chipotle mayo between two slices of a dairy-free ciabatta bun. “We sell a ton, even to nonvegans,” Motlagh says.

BRICK AND BOURBON

Inspired by the classic California-style burgers, Brick and Bourbon’s alternative option features a baked vegan bun topped with an Impossible burger, crisp bib leaf lettuce, ripe tomato and sweet Vidalia onions. You can also add vegan cheddar.

“The burger isn’t grilled on the same grill, but it’s grilled in the same style as our other burgers,” says Ryan Bush, the manager of Brick and Bourbon. Keeping the burgers separate ensures they remain entirely plant-based, she says.

As a bonus, you can substitute an Impossible burger patty with any of Brick and Bourbon’s cast iron signature beef burgers. Ditto for a gluten-free bun.
