Marietta Mentoring

for Leadership By Linda Moore-Connor

Two years ago, Beverly McAfee, founder of Marietta Mentoring for Leadership, spoke to my Sunday School class about a program she launched to help fill a need at her alma mater, Marietta High School. She shared a wonderful success story about a student who is now a senior in college. She was chosen for the program by Marge Kellogg, the executive director of the program at the time, to be mentored by a volunteer because she saw something special in her but knew she needed special assistance to have a chance to succeed in life. The story was about a young lady, who came from a single parent home, where she endured abuse because her Mom struggled with mental health and addiction issues. With the loving support of a caring mentor, she was able to rise above the chaos and graduated from MHS with a scholarship. As she graduates from college, she is looking forward to paying it forward by becoming a mentor herself. Last fall I was delighted to be given the opportunity begin a five-year commitment to mentor an eighth- grade student, a Reach Scholar. My mentee has loving parents who work several jobs to support their family of seven. As her mentor, we get together at least once a month to attend cultural events that will enrich her life and be an encouragement to her to stay in the program, go to college and have a better life. I am looking forward to working with her, watching her graduate and go to college. FEASTS, FUN and

Festivities

Sterling Estates Senior Living communities foster friendships with outdoor events.

A

As seasons change from summer to fall, we’re ready for the return of crisp air and enjoying the outdoors. It’s easy for residents to do with so many different outdoor activity areas within each of Sterling Estates’ retirement communities. With shaded patios and porches, colorful gardens, bocce ball and shuffle board courts, there are many ideal settings for social gatherings with fellow residents, family and friends.

nities to continue learning and volunteering. As a resident explained to us, “We form committees, collaborate with staff to plan these activities and events. It’s a deliberate way to continue leading an active life and frankly it keeps us healthy.”

Parties, events and lecture series can all be held outside in relaxed, natural areas and are an ideal way of connecting with each other. “We seniors can get lost in the ‘Facebook world’ too. At our home here at Sterling Estates with so many activities going on, connecting to others the old fashion way is much more meaningful…at least to us,” explained one of the residents we met in the Hampton patio where an outdoor luncheon lecture was being presented by a Former Deputy Attorney General on “The Case of Leo Frank”.

One of the more popular resident events thus far in 2019 was the ‘Sterling Games.’ It was a fantastic and competitive series of sporting and cultural events held over two days in August with residents of the West Cobb property competing with those of the East Cobb community. Over 50 residents competed in the events, including a 5K stationary bike ride, biathlon (one mile stationary bike ride, one mile treadmill walk), freestyle swimming in the state of the art indoor pools, bocce ball, shuffleboard, horseshoes, chipping and putting, an art competition and a fierce bridge tournament. Gold, silver and bronze medals were given for each event and celebratory medal ceremony and party was held in the The Hampton Club at Sterling West.

Residents here have led a “purposeful life”, and they want to continue doing the very things they were passionate about during their careers and family life…including, learning, giving back, and volunteering their time for others less fortunate. Living at Sterling Estates makes it easy to stay connected and have a purposeful life because they help facilitate opportu-

When the West Cobb community opened its new Clubhouse in The Hampton Residence a few months ago, residents jumped in to start planning fun and meaningful things to do in this exceptional, new gathering space. The Clubhouse provides residents indoor and outdoor dining, an outdoor grill and pizza oven, a large pub and an art and woodworking studio to enjoy

18

The low-country boil was planned by residents, coordinated with staff, and was a big hit for the community.

The recent low-country boil was a big hit, and resident bocce ball tournaments happen year-round.

year round. They’ve already hosted numerous parties, including a Summer Luau, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” themed party, and a Low Country Boil, to name a few. Saturdays and Sundays are filled with lots of fans viewing the in-season games and tournaments on the large screen TVs in the pub. The Fall social calendars for the Sterling communities are very robust, including: separate tournaments for Bridge, bocce ball and shuffleboard, the Harvest Moon Dance (with a Big Band!), as well as the popular Sterling State Fair. The Fair is a sizable, fun community event which welcomes residents’ families to enjoy and participate featuring carnival games, petting zoo, dunk tank and of course, lots of cotton candy for the children. A Sterling couple shared with us, “One of the determining factors for us in choosing Sterling Estates was all the social interactions they have for residents on an ongoing basis. We felt like we were isolating ourselves in our home, and we knew that was not good. Being at Sterling now has brought a breath of fresh air to both our lives….we feel renewed in so many ways and the ability to socialize with so many new neighbors has reinvigorated our wellbeing. You can’t put a price on that.” Indeed, those of us at Marietta Magazine are trying to think of ways to get our parents to move from out-of-state so they can live in one of the Sterling Estates Retirement communities. The quality of life for the residents living there, holistically - mind, body and spirit - is exactly what we would hope for our parents…and ourselves at any age!

STERLING SLIDERS Award-winning Sterling Tropical Beef Sliders with Teriyaki Mango Slaw Twice in three years, Sterling Estates of East Cobb, and its chef, have won first place in the annual “Taste of East Cobb” competition, eclipsing many local, favorite restaurants. We were lucky to get a copy of the award-winning recipe to share with our readers. Make it tonight! The Sterling Tropical Beef Slider with Teriyaki Mango Slaw is combined it with his Sterling Mango Avocado Salad on a Taco Shell to produce the most delectable food pairing you could imagine! VILLAGE REALTY MARIETTA SQUARE 13 West Park Square, Marietta GA 30060 (770) 485-3809 | www.vratl.com

V

VILLAGE REALTY, A FULL-SERVICE REAL ESTATE brokerage with multiple offices across the Metro area, opened the doors to their fourth location on the historic Marietta Square in March of this year. Norm Kennedy, General Manager and Associate Broker for the Marietta Square location, knew there was an opportunity to make grassroots connections with the community. Since opening the doors, the growing team of Realtors® have connected with the community through events on the Square and are continuously seeking ways to be a resource for both buyers and sellers. After seeing the community up close, the team of Realtors decided to pay it forward. “We found ourselves surrounded by all the public service organizations of Cobb County, City of Marietta, and Dobbins Air Force Base, and we began to brainstorm on ways to engage” said Norm Kennedy. The home buying process can be both exciting and stressful, and the team at Village Realty Marietta Square quickly decided on a way they could help make home ownership more affordable for those who serve our community.

24

“Hometown Heroes” was created to help reduce the costs of buying a home for teachers, firefighters, police, EMT, and military personnel. “It can be a challenge to come up with the funds required to purchase a home, and between the down payment and closing/escrow costs, it can quickly add up. We feel that we can offer some assistance with those costs, and ultimately make buying a home more obtainable,” says Norm Kennedy. Village Realty Marietta Square has partnered with a ‘Hometown Team’ to serve these local heroes. Affinity Home Loans is offering discounted lender fees for the Heroes and their Attorney partner; Lueder, Larkin & Hunter is doing the same. The Village Realty Marietta Square Realtors® are committed to helping by giving a portion of their commission as a credit towards closing costs at the time of closing. All together the Hometown Hero could receive thousands of dollars in credits at closing.. For more information on Village Realty Marietta Square and the “Hometown Heroes” program, contact their office at 770-485-3809 or visit www.VRATL.com

20 YEARS

THE AVENUE EAST COBB - 20TH ANNIVERSARY August 12th, 2019 marked two decades as Marietta’s premier shopping center.

T

The Avenue was a new concept embraced by the community when it was first introduced to the retail world in 1999. This new “lifestyle” concept mixed national retailers, local merchants and specialty restaurants in an upscale, open-air setting that encouraged guests to stroll, relax and stay awhile. The “Main Street” design allowed shoppers to step right out of their car into a store during a time traditional indoor malls were the norm. Since its opening, The Avenue East Cobb, located at 4475 Roswell Road in Marietta, has been a destination for regional residents. The center offers guests endless options to eat, shop and play with more than 46 merchants and various monthly events. Consistency and relationships have been the keys to the success of The Avenue East Cobb over the past 20 years. Management has always been focused on enhancing the customer experience, being responsive to merchant concerns and needs,

and building loyalty with vendors. To help build on the experience factor, the Avenue East Cobb has hosted new community events throughout 2019 – events like Spring Festival in April and an outdoor movie series on Monday nights this summer. Plans for additional new events include Canines at Cobb, a pet adoption event on Aug. 31st, and a Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on Nov. 29th, are underway. There are 15 stores in the current Avenue East Cobb lineup that have been there since the very beginning. These include Banana Republic, Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, the only Origins in the state, Victoria’s Secret and more. The most recent additions to the center include K Squared Artisan Boutique, Olea Oliva!, CAS Med Spa, Ginny Marie’s Boutique and Xfinity. Restaurants include Beni’s Cubano, Tin Lizzy’s Cantina, Stockyard Burger & Bones, and Drift Seafood & Oyster Bar, the recent winner of AJC’s “Best Seafood Spot in Atlanta”.

HISTORY

By Trevor Beemon Executive Director, Cobb Landmarks & Historical Society

Introducing Lall Burge

and Elsay Blake

New visitor experience at the William Root House Museum explores history of Marietta’s slave population .

F

For many people, slavery is a difficult subject to discuss. But just because people may feel uncomfortable talking about it doesn’t mean it should be ignored. Today, the c. 1845 William Root House has been meticulously restored to its 1850s appearance and is operated as a historic house museum. The addition of a new interpretive center and touchscreen exhibit at the Root House mean that, moving forward, visitors to the museum will not only learn about the Root family, but they will learn about all of the individuals who lived on the property, including Lall and Elsay.

IN 1860, MARIETTA HAD A POPULATION OF ABOUT 2,600. Of that 2,600, approximately 1,175 were enslaved, meaning that over 40% of the total population of the city was enslaved. About 10% of the total slave population in the South lived in urban settings like Marietta. Here, slaves typically labored as domestic servants such as cooks, butlers, and maids. Depending on the size of the city, slave labor was also be used in factories, mills, and other businesses. The 1860 census shows that William Root owned four slaves two males and two females. The two enslaved males were listed as 73 and 55 years of age. The two females were listed as 60 and 35. Based on their genders and ages, we can form an idea of each enslaved person's role at the Root House. The younger male, who we believe was named Lall Burge, likely served as a butler or house manager. The other male may have worked in the garden, run errands, or assisted William at the store. The older female probably served as a cook while the younger female was likely a house servant named Elsay Blake. Root family letters dating to the Civil War often refer to a man named Lall. Black voter registration records from 1869 show a man named Lall Burge living in nearby Bartow County. Lall is an unusual enough name that this is likely the same person. Fall 2019 | @mariettamagazine

Looking at the last name Burge, researchers were able to located a Dr. Lorenzo N. Burge living in Marietta in 1850, having moved here from Philadelphia (the same place William Root moved to Marietta from). Food historian and living history interWilliam being in the preter Clarissa Clifton giving a cooking pharmacy business, demonstration in the Root House kitchen it is extremely likely Lorenzo and William knew each other and that Lall may have been acquired from Lorenzo. Census records from 1860 and 1880 show a female house servant living at the Root House. Unnamed in the slave census of 1860, she is listed as Elsay Blake in 1880. Because her age matches in each census, and because it was not uncommon for freed slaves to remain with their masters after emancipation, this may be the same person. www.cobblandmarks.com

THERE IS A GROWING trend in skincare since CBD made it’s debut. How does CBD benefit our skin? CBD oil has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties which help to calm the most sensitive skin and skin prone to breakouts. Studies have recently found that CBD has the potential to decrease excessive sebum in the skin, which can help to diminish breakouts and reduce redness in the skin. CBD also helps to stimulate collagen, protect against free- radical damage and smooth fine lines and wrinkles.
