PUBLISHER’S LETTER

School is out! Where did this year go? It seems like we just wrote the Back-to-school articles but now it’s summer again. I hope summer moves slowly. However, with all that’s going on in Alpharetta and Milton, there’s a slim chance of slow. Our cover story this issue features one of our favorite topics: local business. We live, work, shop, eat, play and pray locally; and we do business with local owners every chance we get. These four local ladies are growing businesses and families and having a ball. Check out their stories on page 10. Don’t miss events this Summer include The Old Soldiers Day Parade (p26), Summer Solstice Soiree (p38), The 16th annual HomeStretch Golf Tournament on August 1st at the Manor (p35), Food Truck Thursdays every week, and the Steve Miller Band coming to Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre on July 16. The highlight of the season, however is of course the annual Fourth of July Celebration at Wills Park with children’s activities, food and a spectacular Fireworks Display at dusk (p 18). Alpha/Milton Magazine is published quarterly—please continue to send us your events, updates, articles and images which showcase the best of Alpharetta and Milton. The next issue “Fall” will publish in late August 2017. Live locally! Warm Regards,

Regina Barkley

Between teens, toddlers and trade shows, four metro-Atlanta mothers work double time — balancing motherhood with business. Although much more difficult than it sounds, it is equally, if not more, rewarding. Passion is essential when it comes to your startup career, especially when it runs tangent to the responsibilities of parenthood. With everything from restaurants to Raisin the Pony, these women operate businesses for goods and/or services they enjoy creating. Their dynamic lifestyles embody the phrase — “never a dull moment.” Meet (L to R) Susan Vojnovic, Robbin Riordan, Mikka Orrick and Jackie Zurinaga. Photos by Ashley Blencoe, Blencoe & Co. {mompreneurs} MIKKA ORRICK

The District Salon and Events/ Ceviche Taqueria thedistrictsalon.com/cevichetaqueria.com One business is difficult enough, but Mikka Orrick, a wife and mother of three, co-owns two restaurants and a salon. Having always been the creative and artistic type, Orrick knew she wanted to find a career where she could use her talents everyday. She wanted to fuse her passions for working and creativity. She started working at age 15 in the fast paced restaurant industry at Alpha Soda in downtown Alpharetta, then decided to go into the hair industry after realizing college wasn’t for her. “I had only been a hair stylist for 5 years when the opportunity came about for me in 2007 to open a restaurant in downtown Roswell with my older brother called Ceviche Taqueria. I knew I would one day go back to doing hair.” Several years later she decided it was time for her next adventure, so in 2014 she opened The District Salon and Events in Roswell, with her best friend and partner. One year after opening The District, she and her brother decided to expand Ceviche into downtown Alpharetta, then they moved the District there as well. “The opportunities to grow in Alpharetta were undeniable,” she says, adding, “I wouldn’t have it any other way. This community has made me who I am today. I am so lucky to see Milton and Alpharetta grow from what it originally was to what it is becoming.”

ROBBIN RIORDAN

Freeze Sleeve freezesleeve.com Robbin Riordan is a wife and mother of four athletic children. She co-founded Freeze Sleeve, a revolutionary cold therapy compression sleeve invented to help their kids recover after minor injuries and tough daily practices. The Freeze Sleeve was born from a need to replace the cold, leaky ice bags typically used to treat aches, pains and sore muscles. “My husband started his first business from scratch, so we knew how difficult it was to build a successful company… but neither of us could have imagined how much work launching a new product would be.” After starting the business in their home and shipping orders out of their garage for more than a year, Freeze Sleeve is making a national marketing push into CrossFit, as well as the post-operative recovery market. The headquarters are located right in the heart of the business district in Roswell and the sleeves are packed and shipped from a fulfillment center in Duluth. Robbin heads up the social media and marketing for Freeze Sleeve and does her best to try and balance both her “home” team and her Freeze Sleeve team with equal energy. She loves that their children have been able to be a part of the whole process and are so proud of it and says it makes the all the hard times worth it. “As the Freeze Sleeve brand grows, so do my duties,” she says, “but I love seeing something we created literally making people lives better and more comfortable!” summer 2017•alphamiltonmagazine.com

SUSAN VOJNOVIC

Raisin’s Ranch Pony Parties raisinsranch.com • 770.617.1521 Susan Vojnovic, a wife and busy mom of three, has always had a love of animals and a flair for creative party planning. She began a small endeavor called Raisin’s Ranch Pony Parties in 2011 when she and her daughter purchased a miniature horse named Raisin, who they started bringing to children’s birthday parties. Today, Raisin’s Ranch Pony Parties calls a beautiful property/farm its home, located in the heart of horse country on Birmingham Highway in Milton/Alpharetta. The farm hosts birthday parties, summer camps, preschool groups, photography sessions and any event you can conceive of that includes tiny ponies, adorable animals, and a rustic new barn as a backdrop. “Raisin’s Ranch is a magical setting for any event, but especially for a child’s birthday. We are in the business of creating memories. We treat everyone like family, and we want our guests to feel right at home.” In addition to the parties, Susan invites photographers onto the property to use the location as a backdrop and her animals and wonderful 1949 Chevy pick-up truck as props. “I love being a part of the creative process with the photographers, and it is a lot of fun to see the beautiful images that are created using our animals or our vintage truck.” The 1949 Chevy pick-up truck is also rented out for weddings as decoration or to carry the bride and groom away. “Being a part of someone’s very special day, whether it be the truck at your wedding, or your child’s first pony ride at our farm, is an honor that we don’t take lightly. I thank God every day for letting me have this amazingly fun lifestyle that has created a business where I get to meet wonderful people and spread joy, one pony at a time.” 17955 Birmingham Highway, Alpharetta. locallifepublishing.com

JACKIE ZURINAGA The Town Gossip Marketing thetowngossip.com

The Town Gossip Marketing is the brain-child of Jackie Zurinaga, a wife and mother of two young adults. Her company provides web design, content writing, photography, videography, and events planning -- all with small businesses in mind. She specializes in North Fulton County because she knows the market well, and she has lived and worked in Roswell for the past 17 years. Zurinaga is also an advocate for entrepreneurs, encouraging others to “get off the corporate hamster wheel” and start a business they’re passionate about. With the current economy, she believes there is no better time to start a business. The most valuable thing that she has learned as an owner of two businesses is to reach out for help. “You can’t master everything. Focus on what you do best and let someone else handle the rest.” She adds, “starting your own business can be really scary, not just from a financial standpoint but also the fear of failing at your dream.” But she tries to envision herself in her elderly years, sitting on the front porch and instead of, “I wish I would have,” her elderly self says, “I’m so glad I went for it.”

Enhancing Your LANDSCAPE this Summer

E

BY LUCA GIANTURCO, Owner SCOTTSDALE FARMS

ENHANCING THE LANDSCAPE around your home is an enjoyable hobby that can be done gradually as your time permits. First, assess your landscape by walking around deciding what you like or don’t like about your existing property. This will help you plan what plants to remove or add. If the existing shrubs require a lot of pruning every year and now look like green meatballs, consider replacing them with plants that are more size appropriate and require less or no pruning to keep them attractive. Often landscapes have too many green plants so if you prefer a more unique landscape, consider using plants with different color leaves and contrasting textures to add interest. A beautiful landscape includes complimentary plant groupings blooming multiple

16

seasons to create beauty all year. There are even plants that will bloom in the winter or add interesting stem color. While selecting plants for your landscape may seem to be a daunting task, it need not be. Stroll through your favorite garden center and look for plants that catch your eye. Then decide where on your property the various plants will go. Read the signs in front of the plants for insight on how large the plants grow, what color they bloom, and if they like full sun or shadier conditions, if they are fragrant and whether they are deer resistant and drought tolerant. Your garden center plant professional can help you in this selection process or have a staff landscape designer visit you at your home. Having a beautiful and colorful landscape is gratifying. You and your children may enjoy preparing dinner with herbs that you grow in your garden. Snip a few flowers out of your landscape and place them in a vase to enjoy while you dine. Even in this age of cell phones and computers, it’s still fun to get our hands dirty in the garden! scottsdalefarms.com summer 2017•alphamiltonmagazine.com

REAL ESTATE

REAL ESTATE MARKET UPDATE Alpharetta & Milton (Spring Sales) 5 Tips For The Perfect Summer PARTY! By Tracy Coles – Hernandez Group Homebuyer Specialist

hernandezgroup.com • 678-824-4112

It’s summer entertaining time, and some of the best events and gatherings happen outside. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite tips to throw the perfect summer party. 5 TIPS FOR THE PERFECT SUMMER PARTY: 1.) Bring the indoors out

Consider bringing your dining room table or chairs outside. Set the table with bright, fresh flowers, pretty placemats and colorful dishes. Create a space that invites your guests to linger and laugh all night. According to Hernandez Group staging guru Melissa Albertson, “I love using indoor-outdoor pillows, poufs and rugs as ways to make the outdoors feel homey. For al fresco dining, I like to drape soft throws on the backs of the chairs – that way everyone can cuddle up if they get cold!”

2.) Whip up some pitchers of sangria!

Sangria doesn’t have to just be traditional red (although it’s one of our favorites!), but why not try Rosé White Peach or Pinot Grigio Melon?

3.) Consider the lighting

Lighting plays such a major role for backyard entertaining. When the sun starts to set, simple bulb lights create a glowing ambiance that is perfect for a relaxing social environment. Strings of lights in trees, lanterns along a pathway or sidewalk, and candles in glass hurricanes all set an evening party aglow and add an element of festivity and romance.

4.) Surprising dishes that are best on the grill

You can make more on the grill than burgers, chicken, and steak. Make the grill a gathering spot for your guests and think about grilling pineapple, watermelon, vegetables, flatbread pizzas, Kabobs, and bacon wrapped jalapenos. Make a lot – these are crowd pleasers!

5.) Stay within budget by thinking outside of the box Don’t be afraid to use a variety of inexpensive and unexpected items. Incorporate a watermelon as a punch bowl and frozen fresh berries as ice cubes. Bring Mother Nature-inspired items to the table as decoration and conversation pieces like driftwood, moss, and fieldstones. Summer entertaining is all about casual, easy, and fun!

Canteen 360’s mobile bar unit includes lots of amenities for you and your guests, along with professional bartenders.

T

Today, artfully redesigned box trucks and converted pop-up camper food trucks are a common sights around Alpharetta. The City even designates every Thursday through the Summer to “Food Truck Alley,” so residents can come out and enjoy dinner in the streets. We don’t see “Drink Trucks” as commonly. Now, there’s Canteen 360, a locally -owned mobile bar unit which can bring the cocktail party to your next event. In the beginning, Owner of Canteen 360 Brian Fulmer wanted to bring the atmosphere of a sports bar to their customers’ special events. Their vision was to build a mobile bar that services guests 360 degrees. But it has evolved into more than just another mobile sports bar. They truly help make any type of event memorable—from birthdays, anniversaries and weddings to corporate events, the demand for their services continues to grow. By providing professional bar service with a 360-degree open face mobile bar unit, the professional staff of Canteen 360 not only mix and pour your favorite party beverages, they ensure that each guest is taken care of and entertained. You’re not simply hiring a

bartender to pour drinks, you’re hiring a team of service minded individuals to wow your guests. They take care of all the details so as hosts their customers can enjoy their events along with guests. Their team can provide a tailored or hand-picked cocktail selection for any special occasion, as well as premium “Fat Tuesday” frozen drinks. Their mobile bar also offers plenty of seating for many guests to enjoy the atmosphere similar to their favorite local bar. canteen360.com • info@canteen360.com 21

Restaurant Profile:

Mondo Italian Kitchen

M

Mondo Italian Kitchen offers fresh, made-from-scratch Italian dishes, boutique wines and craft beers in the restaurant’s warm, inviting atmosphere and Osteria-style tavern. A casual, family restaurant in Milton, Mondo serves their spin on Italian classics along with artisan New York-style pizza. The chef adapts the menu to fit the seasons, with fresh, local ingredients as the focal point to every dish. Bar guests in the “Osteria” can relax in a comfortable setting – at a communal table with friends, while watching a game or listening to live music. An “Osteria” is a “simple, Italian restaurant or public house.” The bar and restaurant space at Mondo’s is just that. Stop in for their special Mondo Mule or Elderflower Prosecco, as well as a selection of Italian and domestic

wines, local craft beers and your favorite spirits. Mondo’s goal is to utilize local sourcing where possible, extending to the beer selection which includes local brewers. They offer catering from 10 to 200 and have a separate catering menu for party planners. They provide the food for pick up or delivery in boxes or large trays, perfect for family-style dinners, neighborhood gatherings, dinner parties or large events. They also have a party room that can be reserved for up to 20 guests, perfect for a birthday, anniversary or bridal shower. The locals say their favorite items on Mondo’s menu are the Bruschetta, Calamari, Wild Mushroom Ravioli, Gluten-free Pasta and Chicken Parmigiano or Marsala. Seven Seas Pool Care Answers

What are some important safety concerns pool owners should think about?

• CPR AND SWIMMING LESSONS My first recommendation would be to make sure all children have had swimming lessons as young as possible. Another safety precaution would be for everyone in the household to be trained in CPR. It is always better to be prepared. • CHEMICALS Having chemical levels in the pool balanced is very important so that no one gets sick and no chemical reaches a toxic level. • DRAIN COVERS Drain covers are crucial. While getting my CPO certification, I learned about the tragic story of Virginia Graeme Baker who drowned in a spa due to suction entrapment. After that, a law was instated that holds main drains to a certain standard of safety. Pools should not be used if covers are missing or damaged. locallifepublishing.com

• EMPTYING SKIMMER BASKETS You would also want to be wary of any snakes that could be hiding in a skimmer basket if you needed to empty it. Make sure there is a thick glove that you can protect yourself with in that case. • SUPERVISION Have an adult supervise children if they are outside or swimming. For younger children, consider getting a safety fence installed around the pool. • EQUIPMENT The equipment should be checked regularly for leaks or breaks. Equipment should also be grounded and bonded properly to prevent electrocution or damage from storms. If you have any safety concerns or questions, feel free to call us!

Milton Mini Horse Named Equine Ambassador to Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta

M

Meet Raisin. Raisin is a miniature horse. A miniature horse is just like a regular horse, only a very cute, tiny, scaled down version. Miniature horses were first bred in England to pull coal carts up from the mines because of their strength and tiny stature. These days they are more of a novelty, used as show horses, pets, and now more commonly as therapy animals. It takes a very special mini horse to become a therapy animal, and Raisin is just such a creature.

families", said Katherine Crowe, director of patient activities at CHOA’s The Zone. "The smiles and laughter that Raisin brings to patients here is unforgettable. Many of our patients ride horses or have spent time on farms, so having Raisin visit brings a little piece of home to the hospital. Others have never met a horse, but with Raisin's calm demeanor, they can interact with horses in a safe environment." Patients are allowed to pet Raisin as much or as little as they like. They can brush & dress Raisin, or just sit and observe. Interaction with Raisin helps many forget about any upcoming procedures. Most are quite surprised to see a horse walk through the door!

Raisin, who makes her home at Raisin’s Ranch Pony Parties in Milton/Alpharetta, has just been named as the official Equine Ambassador to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA). She gets bathed, groomed, dressed and loaded on the trailer for her regular visits to CHOA at Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta. Patients there get to brush her, pet her, and put flowers in her mane and tail. They even dress her up in a tutu and take her for a walk if they are able. "Raisin is always well-groomed and well-behaved. She interacts perfectly with our patients and

Raisin has been wonderfully trained and loved by Susan Vojnovic and her daughter, Ava. Thirteen-year-old Ava saved money when she was just 7 years old, to help rescue Raisin and give her a good home. Mom and daughter really enjoy sharing Raisin with others. Raisin keeps busy doing children's therapy, visiting schools, entertaining at parties and spreading her magic and joy. You can meet Raisin & more miniature animals at Raisin's Ranch Pony Parties at 17955 Birmingham Hwy. in Milton/ Alpharetta. raisinsranch.com

ATLANTIS DREAM FARM

offers the unique take on this ancient practice:

Introducing Yoga with Goats (GOGA)

A

Atlantis Dream Farm is just that - a DREAM Farm! What started out as a home for Cathi’s beloved Bronx has become a joyful oasis for her family and herself. The farm has quickly grown from one amazing thoroughbred (Bronx) to 3 miniature horses, 5 adorable goats, 2 sweet bunnies, 2 lovely cats, 1 handsome pup and lots of funny chickens. Cathi quickly learned that Atlantis Dream Farm was not only her oasis of happiness but a place that friends would come to every week to feel peaceful and happy. She knew that she wanted to share this with others and wanted to incorporate her health coaching and love of nature into something that others could enjoy and benefit from. So in January of 2017 she began dreaming and doing. Her husband, Van, came up with the name and after creating her brand, building her website, building her team of GOGA instructors and getting the farm GOGA ready, she held her first class on April 10th. 30

While goat yoga is growing in popularity across the country, GOGA is the only one in the Milton/Alpharetta area and it has quickly become the place for beginners and seasoned yogis alike. Spending an hour in the beautiful peace and calm of Atlantis Dream Farm while connecting your mind/body/spirit with yoga and enjoying the fun and happiness of baby goats is something that this area was missing. Once you experience a GOGA session, you’ll be hooked! However, if you are more serious about your yoga practice and wont appreciate distractions during your session, this may not be for you. The goats love to join in and “help” you with your moves. Whether you are a first timer or have been practicing for years, you will walk away from your GOGA session relaxed, refreshed and happy. The certified yoga instructors will take you through an hour of zen-ful yoga to ensure you are relaxed and refreshed and the Goat Girls will ensure you are happy. Along with the weekly GOGA sessions, Atlanta Dream Farm also holds special events for birthdays, book clubs, Girls Night Out and many others. lovegoga.com summer 2017•alphamiltonmagazine.com

Food Truck Alley Live Music

Revel in Romance at Food Truck Alley on June 29th

E

Enjoy a variety of 6-8 rotating food trucks and music Thursdays through the summer from 5pm to 9pm at Old Roswell Street. Stroll the streets, eat delicious food, listen to some great music and kick off each weekend a little early! Live music for Food Truck Alley the last Thursdays of the month is sponsored by the Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau. This summer offers us two great, local live performances by local musicians: June 29, 2017 – Revel in Romance July 27, 2017 Cody Marlowe REVEL IN ROMANCE – June 29 With a blitz of tight, rhythmic instrumentation, wall-of-sound punk allusions, and ethereal, 3-dimensional synths, Revel in Romance, (a 5-piece Alt. Pop Rock Band out of Atlanta, GA.), has achieved a soundscape as in-depth as it is relatable. Their lead vocalist, Saxony Raine, is the 2016 GA Music Awards Winner - Best Female Rock Artist. They have been featured at several prominent festivals and conferences across the U.S. including Warped Tour, SXSW, and Sweetwater 420. They've been an Atlanta Braves Band of the Year, were recently filmed for Mississippi's PBS special series "Amped & Wired" and have won a Balcony TV Global People’s Choice Award. Revel in Romance's Debut EP "Right and Wrong" released June 2016 has had 2 songs reach number one on radio stations in the U.S. and England and their debut " ECHOES" music video is currently airing on MUCH TV channels and MUSIC PLUS TV channels across Canada. locallifepublishing.com

Band Members: Saxony Raine – Vocals; Parker Rehklau - Guitar & Vocals; Devin Maier - Guitar & Vocals; Mark Robinson – Drums; Remington Rehklau - Bass CODY MARLOWE – July 27 Georgia born singer-songwriter and roots-rock artist Cody Marlowe found his inspiration at an early age in the soulful sounds of B.B. King, Merle Haggard, and the Allman Brothers. Marlowe’s songs explore the polarities of good and evil in an intriguing blend of lyrics featuring lost loves and hopeful musings. His 2013 album, “Silver and Gold,” is his third release since his first EP, “Where You Are,” released in 2010 and his first full length, “Eighty Nine,” released in 2011. For "Silver and Gold," Marlowe teamed up with brothers, producer/drummer Kevin Sellors and bass player Ryan Sellors, to form his new back-up band the Dead Flowers. During the recording process, Marlowe recruited Joey Huffman on organ (Hank Jr., Matchbox 20) and Nathan Bedingfield on electric guitar (Aaron Shust). “Silver and Gold” is a return to the roots of rock n roll, country, blues, and honest songwriting; reminiscent of Tom Petty and the Black Crowes but with a modern edge inspired by childhood in the 90’s. Cody's side project, "Foxhollow," is a folk rock band hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. Founded by the songwriting duo, Cody Marlowe and Joel Hoffman, Foxhollow have toured regionally over the past 2 years with shows at Eddies Attic, Vinyl, and an opening slot for Eddie Money at 37 Main. Foxhollow has one self-titled album featuring fan favorites such as "Hello" and "Crazy." 43
