It seems like every day there’s a new warning about hackers and dodgy software — and over Christmas we learned that there was a security flaw in almost every modern computer, tablet and phone that could let baddies get our passwords and other private information. So how do we keep our important information safe and secure? There are three important things to consider. They are: loss, where you lose digital things such as photos, home movies or documents you don’t want to lose; malicious software, which is when a program sneaks onto your computer and causes trouble; and hacking, which is when somebody you don’t know gets into your computer to access your personal information and/or demand money. The good news is that they’re all easy to deal with. Let’s talk about loss first. The single best way to prevent loss of valuable personal things such as family photos is to have extra copies. They don’t need to be printed copies — if you take as many photos as we do the cost of getting even some of them printed is frightening — and if you keep your copies digital then you don’t need to spend too much money to copy your entire photo or video library, or anything else you want to keep a backup of. You can store backups on services such as Google Photos, Flickr and Apple’s iCloud, but for proper peace of mind we’d recommend backing up to an external hard disk: that’s much faster, and doesn’t require you to keep up a 1 membership or pay a monthly subscription as some online services do. You can get a really good external hard disk for less than £40, and you don’t need to pay much for faster, even higher capacity ones: at the time of writing

Seagate’s Expansion drive, which offers 1TB of storage and has a super-fast USB 3.0 connection for modern PCs and Macs, is just £45. If you’re backing up really massive libraries, a whopping 4TB of storage is still under £100 — although most of us won’t need anything close to that. External hard disks aren’t the only options. You could burn your own DVD data discs, or use USB flash drives such as SanDisk’s Ultra Flair 32GB (£12.95). However, we’re not convinced they’re great options for long-term backups. Drives such as the Patuoxun 2 Portable USB DVD CD RW Writer may be cheap — £17 from Amazon, with discs even cheaper — but DVD and CD discs don’t last forever and many of our ones started to rot after a few years in normal conditions. And if you’ve used many USB sticks you’ll know of their incredible ability to go missing and never be found again. There’s not much point in having a backup if you can’t find it when you need it. The cures for malicious software and hacking are the same: security software. There are plenty of free options such as the excellent AVG Free (www.avg.com), but it’s worth considering spending a little money on a paid-for security suite such as BitDefender Total Security (around £49/£69 for an unlimited-device Family Pack). BitDefender doesn’t just cover your PC: it protects Macs, Android and iPhone/iPads too, and it includes tools to stop bad things getting onto your devices as well as antihacking protection for your personal data. contravene the Highway Code. Rule 172: “You must give way at a Give Way” sign”.

This is a plea to all well-meaning drivers out there, who act with intended courtesy but are rewriting the Highway Code in doing so. Here are two examples that regularly happen to me: 1. You are turning right off a main road, your exit is clear and you are waiting for the oncoming car to go past on a clear road. But the other driver stops on the carriageway and flashes their lights to let you go. 2. You approach a roundabout and stop to give way to the car on the roundabout, but the driver stops on the roundabout to let you enter it. These actions may appear to be well meaning as the driver is interrupting their journey to let you continue yours, but these “unselfish” acts

Rule 185: “When reaching a roundabout you must give priority to traffic approaching from the right, unless directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights” (Note: not a car slowing and flashing its lights). Apart from the confusion caused, these actions are classic “bash for cash” ploys too: the ‘well-meaning’ driver slows and flashes lights, you go, they floor it, you drive into them. They say it’s your fault. Over to the insurance companies. The Highway Code may appear to be clunky in places but it’s a set of rules that means we all know what to expect and can act accordingly. Sunflowers are one of the most stunning and impressive flowers you could have in your garden, and are easy to grow too. Sow them in April to achieve a fantastic flowery display in just a few months’ time. So which ones should you choose and how do you go about getting the best crop of flowers? There are fast-growing and potentially very tall varieties such as ‘Russian Giant’ and ‘Titan’, with the latter reaching a potential height of up to 360cm or 12ft and having heads of up to 60cm (2ft) in diameter! There are some delightful miniature or dwarf varieties. The F1 variety ‘Little Dorrit’ grows to about 60cm (2ft) and has rich yellow flowers with very dark centres. Another favourite is ‘Little Leo’ at just 45cm (18in), which makes lots of impact with golden yellow heads on multi-branching stems. Nowadays there are many colours other than yellow readily available, such as ‘Black Magic’, which has maroon flowers and is multibranching, reaching a height of about 180cm (6ft). Grow yourself a few for cutting too, and you’ll have a vase or more full of flowers that would cost a fortune in the shops. Many varieties are suitable, including the

orangey-brown ‘Velvet Queen’, ‘Black Velvet’ and the bi-coloured and pollen-free ‘Magic Roundabout’. For containers, ‘Pacino Colada’ is a compact variety growing to just 40cm (16in) and has 10cm (4in) wide golden-yellow flowers, making a wonderful plant for a sunny patio, sheltered balcony or in the flower beds. Children love a competition to grow the tallest plant and varieties like ‘Russian Giant’ and ‘Giant Single’ are perfect for smaller gardeners, and as they reach heights of about 180cm (6ft) will soon dwarf them! Sunflowers make a cheap and cheerful addition to a garden boundary, adding splashes of colour to a dreary fence line or helping to mask a garage or shed. You should get a good crop of blooms if you sow sunflowers between March and May, depending on the weather and where you live. You can sow them straight into the soil or into pots of compost. I like to use RootTrainers to encourage really well-developed and deep roots to develop, and make it easy to plant out the sunflowers with minimum root disturbance; see www.pippagreenwood.com/ products/grow-great-crops for more information.

As their name suggests, sunflowers need plenty of sunshine to thrive. However, although many are tall, each plant does not actually take up much space at ground level. Slugs and snails love sunflowers so I always grow them in small individual pots and plant them out when they’re a few inches tall. This means they’re bigger and tougher and better able to resist attack. As an added precaution, put a ring of slug-deterring material around the base of each one – crushed shells, crushed eggshells, coco-shell or pine needles for instance. If you’re growing sunflowers on anything other than a protected site, it may be necessary to give the taller varieties some support in the form of a sturdy bamboo cane or slim stake, just in case the wind blows too strongly! • 6 x 150g salmon fillets • 2tsp mild chilli powder • 2tsp ground coriander • 2tsp ground cumin • 1/2tsp freshly ground black pepper • Squeeze of lemon or lime juice • 2tbsp olive oil

• 6tbsp mayonnaise or soured cream • 2 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped • Zest and juice from 1 lime • Lime wedges and spring onion curls (see tip) to garnish

Preheat the oven to 200C, 180C Fan, Gas 6. Run your fingers along the top of the salmon fillets and remove any fine bones with tweezers. Mix together the spices and rub over the surface of the salmon fillets. Season with a little salt. Place the salmon pieces in a foil-lined roasting tin. Whisk together the lime or lemon juice and oil and drizzle over the salmon. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the salmon is just cooked to the centre. Remove from the oven and leave to cool completely. Arrange the cold salmon fillets on a platter. Mix together the mayonnaise or soured cream, spring onions and lime zest and juice. Serve the salmon and mayonnaise garnished with lime wedges and spring onion curls. To make spring onion curls use a sharp knife to thinly shred a few spring onions. Place in a bowl of iced water and leave in the fridge for about 1 hour until curled. Drain on kitchen paper before using.

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL The boys and girls in Nursery were very excited to have a visit from a very famous owl. This owl has starred in Harry Potter films and on TV ads. They also got to hold a snake and a lizard! The children really enjoyed the visit from the ‘Owl Man’ from World of Owls and loved being able to get up close and personal with these beautiful creatures. Tuesday 6th February was Internet Safety Day. Each of the classes at Millennium took part in lessons to increase their awareness of the need to stay safe online. They learned not to give out personal information and importantly not to trust that a character or person they might come across is really who they say they are. Our P4 class used facemasks to show how what you see on screen can often be different in real life.

BALLYGOWAN COMMUNITY VOICES Join a friendly and fun community choir. No auditions or previous experience is needed - we have a very mixed ability choir from those who sing in the shower, to ex choristers. Some read music, some learn from ear but with rehearsal each Friday evening everyone works well together and we make a fantastic sound. OVARIAN CANCER ACTION - BOX2BEAT CANCER is a national fundraising campaign in aid of Ovarian Cancer Action. Local Boxercise instructors have organised a threehour sponsored Boxercise class. A woman in the UK dies every two hours from Ovarian Cancer. Survival rates for this disease are the lowest in Europe and this needs to change. So on Sunday 8th April 2018, 11am2pm at Pulse Fitness, Lough Moss, Carryduff, come join our fight and together we can beat Ovarian cancer once and for all. POLICE NOTICE - PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST FRAUDSTERS Police are urging members of the public to protect themselves against fraudsters who claim to represent HMRC and trick them into making a bogus payment. Victims are being contacted in a variety of methods and, in some instances reported, the fraudsters ask for payment in iTunes gift card voucher codes because they can be easily redeemed and easily sold on. The scammers don’t need the physical card to redeem the value and instead get victims to read out the serial code on the back of their card over the phone. D/Inspector Wallace said: “Police are urging members of the public to always err on the side of caution with any text, call, email or letter asking for payment or personal details in order to release money, refund fees, pay lottery wins or supply a holiday, giveaway or service. “HMRC will never contact you by telephone and ask for payment of tax arrears by iTunes vouchers or similar payment methods. “Scammers are inventive and can be very convincing, but each scam is designed to tempt you to drop your guard. If you are at all suspicious about a call that you receive, hang up and phone the organisation that the person is purporting to represent to check their authenticity. Ideally, make the call from another telephone so you can be sure the original caller has not remained on the line. “If you have received a call of this kind, or are concerned by the intent of unsolicited calls, emails or letters then please report it to Action Fraud via their website www.actionfraud.police.uk or by phoning 0300 123 2040, or call police on the non-emergency number 101.” Further advice and information can also be obtained by visiting https://www.psni.police.uk/crime/ fraud/ orwww.nidirect.gov.uk/scamwiseni

RAVARA PRODUCTIONS is holding auditions on 3rd April for ‘Bonnie and Clyde’, a musical that will be performed for the first time ever in Northern Ireland this August. Could you be the next Bonnie or Clyde? Ravara is searching for talented performers (aged 16-24) to play these iconic roles, as well as strong singers and dancers for what will be a unique and ensemble based interpretation of the show. A young and vibrant company, Ravara prides itself on the collaborative and creative nature of its highquality productions, which have received six NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) nominations in the past year alone. Recent performances have included ‘Hairspray’, ‘Godspell’ and ‘In the Heights’ (Irish Premiere) at the Belfast Waterfront Hall. The intensive rehearsal period from 11th to 23rd August will give young performers an opportunity to explore challenging music and choreography as well as constantly developing their acting skills. Performances will run from the 23rd to 25th August in Stranmillis College Theatre. For younger performers (aged 5-15), Ravara Productions is excited to present ‘Peter Pan’ as its Junior show, auditions for which will take place on 4th April. Workshop sessions will run in Belfast from 9th to 18th of August, with performances from 19th to 22nd. There are also exciting opportunities for off stage roles with both productions.
