Welcome

to your Sept / Oct magazine

Hello again everyone,

Articles: 6 Technology

Here we are at the beginning of September, and Autumn is almost here. I hope you all enjoyed the Summer break. I did get some time to sit in the garden with my feet up and read a book, but I didn't get through half of the tasks I’d mentally set for myself. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow!

The first of September is a very special date for me - it’s the anniversary of the beginning of my magazine business. In 2006, I’d promised myself I would make a decision over the Summer about whether to start a magazine for Carryduff. By 31st August I was still dithering. Would it work or not? I wasn’t sure. I remember clearly being in work on 1st September 2006 my daughter’s first day in ‘big’ school. I thought, “I’ll just do it! If I don't try, I’ll never know.” In 6 weeks, the first Carryduff Focus was off to print, followed a year later by the first issue of the BT8 Focus. 10 years on, I think it was the best decision I never made! Until next time!

As if buying new clothes, bags and accessories wasn’t expensive enough, the back to school period also means buying gadgets - but which ones will actually benefit your child when they head to school, college or university? The right gadgets really do make a difference, but don’t rush to spend more money than you need to. Some form of computer is essential, especially for students away from home: it’s not just a tool for learning, but for communicating, music, movies and TV too. The key question today is whether a laptop or a tablet is better. Both cost around the same - unless you’re going for an Apple laptop, you can get a very good laptop for less than £400, which is around the same price as an iPad - but it’s important to check whether your child’s school, college or university has specific requirements. For example, some statistical software requires Windows, and while you can make Windows work on a Mac that involves extra expense - and it isn’t an option at all on an iPad. If you’re buying software, look for student versions: programs such as Microsoft Office come in student editions that cost a fraction of the normal price. There’s no doubt that Apple

computers are the most desirable computers for students, but they’re also the most expensive ones: Apple’s cheapest laptop, the MacBook Air, starts at £749. A better option may be to buy a second-hand MacBook Pro, as the 2012 model is still current, available online for around £400 and can be upgraded with fast SSD storage for around £50. Alternatively, keep an eye out for “refurb” deals. That’s when brand new laptops have been returned for some reason, checked and put on sale again. They can’t be sold as new anymore so they attract significant discounts.

great deal of money. Amazon has just updated its Kindle range of ebook readers, and the £59.99 model is arguably the best value Kindle so far. You can spend more on Kindles with all kinds of whizzy features, but we wouldn’t.

One other product you might want to consider is gadget insurance. That isn’t the same as an extended warranty, and it’s important to understand the difference: extended warranties such as Apple’s AppleCare don’t cover accidental damage such as water spills, which can easily do hundreds of pounds worth of damage to a The other essential, for older laptop. • 1.6kg floury potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks • 750g cod fillet • 1L milk • 1 bay leaf • Few black peppercorns • 75g butter • 3 tbsp freshly chopped parsley • 175g frozen peas, thawed • 225g large peeled prawns, thawed if frozen • 15ml olive oil • Sprig of fresh parsley, to garnish

You can use any white fish fillet for this pie - haddock or coley will work just as well. Alternatively, replace half the cod with salmon fillet or smoked haddock, if liked.

To advertise t: 90 817579

Meanwhile, place the cod in a large frying pan and pour over the milk. Add the bay leaf and peppercorns and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 minutes then remove from the heat. Using a slotted spoon, remove the cod from the pan and set aside. Strain the milk into a large heatproof jug. Melt 50g of the butter in a medium saucepan. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in 850ml of the milk. Bring to the boil, stirring all the time, then simmer for 3-4 minutes until you have a smooth, thick sauce.

• 50g plain flour

10

Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling, lightly salted water for 15-20 minutes until tender.

Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, Gas 6. Flake the fish, discarding any skin and bones, and stir into the sauce with the parsley, peas and prawns. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Transfer the mixture to a deep ovenproof dish. Mash the potatoes with the rest of the butter and milk and season to taste. Spoon the mash over the fish mixture to cover. Drizzle over the olive oil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and bubbling. Serve garnished with a sprig of parsley.

The University of Hull have a professor of driving psychology (yes really). His name is John Groeger and he has conducted research into drivers who switch to “autopilot” when behind the wheel. The study of 2,000 responders found that 80% of road users admit to zoning out when driving. This is up from 6 in10 in a similar study conducted in 2009. 25% of drivers admitted to be thinking of other things whilst driving and, here’s the scary thing: 1 in 6 said they couldn’t remember their entire journey!

Unfortunately women came out in the survey as worse drivers, as the results showed they were nearly twice as likely as men to compile mental “to do” lists and thus be distracted. The moral here is whilst the ability to multi-task is good, it does have its place. But on balance perhaps the ladies were just more honest in their answers than the men? Blokes, on the other hand, were far less worried about not concentrating 100% on the road - a sizable 41% said it did not bother them. (That’s really comforting to know.) Professor Groeger states the blinking obvious when he says: “Driving is a complex task that requires our attention.” But he does have a point. Stuff is happening outside the windscreen all the time and if you need to react to it and you’re not 100% “there”, it may be too late. By Iain Betson

The Muse – Jessie Burton Burton’s The Miniaturist was one of 2014’s bestsellers, and personally I think her latest novel is even better. West Indian-born Odelle lands a job at a London art institute in 1967. Her friend, Lawrie, has a painting he thinks the institute might be interested in, but Odelle’s boss seems to know more about the picture than she’s willing to admit. Back in 1936, Olive is attempting to hide her artistic talents from her father, while building a life for herself in Spain. A brilliant portrayal of forging one’s identity in a foreign country. The Harrowing – James Aitcheson It’s 1066 and a Norman army is marching through England, destroying anyone and anything in their path. Five travellers are fleeing to the last Saxon stronghold, but will they reach it in time, and is it just the Normans they’re running from? There’s action scenes aplenty, interspersed with the individual stories of the five travellers – a servant, a lady, a priest, a warrior and a minstrel. Aitcheson has clearly done his homework on this era, and also manages to create characters that are every bit as human and flawed as their modern-day counterparts.

Let Me Tell You About A Man I Knew – Susan Fletcher Jeanne Trabuc is a dutiful wife and mother, but her sons have left home and the boredom and loneliness of life in rural Provence in the 1880s are settling over her in a quiet depression. So when a new patient arrives at the asylum that her husband runs, Jeanne can’t resist reaching out to him. An artist, with wild red hair, self-mutilated ear and attitude so different to anyone she knows, he has the power to reawaken the spark within Jeanne that she’s subdued for so long. A beautiful, fictional reimagining of Vincent Van Gogh’s time at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole institution.

The Farm at the Edge of the World – Sarah Vaughan Will and Alice are evacuated to a Cornish farm to escape war-torn London. There they find safety, although it’s not the picturepostcard life they may have imagined. Friendship between Will and the farmer’s daughter Maggie blossoms into love, but a lie will change things between the three forever. Seventy years on, Alice wants to atone, but is it too late to make amends? An enjoyable story of love, friendship and how sometimes the hardest person to forgive is yourself.

The Plague Charmer – Karen Maitland It’s 1361 and plague is once more Stolen Years – Kazia Myers stealing through England. In its It’s 1940 and Poland is under wake is an even deadlier curse – occupation. Seventeen year old fear. As neighbours turn against Anna is forced to leave her home each other and hysteria sweeps the near Krakow to work on an Austrian nation, can Sara protect her family? farm, where she is little more than Up in the manor house, 16 year old a slave. But she finds solace, Christina and her secret baby are friendship and love amongst her hiding from the world, waiting to fellow workers, even as the see whether her abusive husband situation they find themselves in will come home from France and becomes progressively harder. The claim the child. With a long cast of author’s parents were Polish characters, and plenty of plot twists refugees and survivors of Stalin’s and turns, The Plague Charmer labour camps, and this personal could well stay with you long after connection certainly comes across you’ve turned the last page. in this poignant tale.

It is spring bulb time in all the garden centres now; they should be crammed full of bulbs, many at a reasonable price and all of which promise to provide glorious masses of colour for years to come. By all means plant bulbs in beds and borders, but if you only have a terrace, patio or a back yard, then there are still plenty of bulb planting opportunities to be had! Bulbs have the potential to make any garden look gorgeous, but you can use them to add an element of fun as well as glamour, colour and perfume. Bulbs look fantastic if allowed to naturalise beneath trees, but miniature varieties look equally good beneath shrubs. Choose miniature daffodils or crocuses and plant them in a scattered effect beneath the shrub, taking care to minimise damage to the shrub’s roots. Keep them well watered in spring and you should have a fantastic display. Ornamental plastic-lined woven baskets, which are available inexpensively from local markets or on the internet, make perfect planting containers provided they are at least 3” (8 cm) deep. Shallower baskets can be used for

28

smaller bulbs such as crocuses simply fill them with bulb fibre and plant up as you would a bowl of indoor bulbs. To ensure adequate drainage, puncture some holes in the plastic liner and use any normal multi-purpose or loam based compost mixture. Baskets like this look particularly decorative in the spring, and if you add a couple of ferns or ivies to larger baskets they will look even better. An outdoor table is unlikely to be used for entertaining in spring, so simply cover it to prevent the surface being spoiled and arrange a selection of pots full of spring bulbs on it – the effect can be really splendid. An old bucket - particularly an enamelled or galvanized one makes a fabulous planter, but remember to drill some holes in the base or place a layer of pebbles or grit at least 2” (5cm) deep in the bottom, so that excess water accumulates below the level of the roots and the bulbs do not rot off. If your garden or back yard is a good size, then large containers will look particularly handsome. Packed with a single variety of one

of the daffodils or tulips or any other spring bulbs, they will make a striking display. Plant the container up in two layers, so that one lot of bulbs is a couple of inches deeper than the other, and the deeper ones will flower later than those planted closer to the surface to prolong the display. An old bathroom suite or parts of it make wacky and unusual planters. A bath may need a lot of compost to fill it – and don’t forget drainage - but it can act like a full-sized flowerbed. Even a hand basin, lavatory or the cistern can be planted up to great effect. Old watering cans, wheelbarrows or even a decrepit pair of wellies or boots with a hole in them will also make wonderful planters and will save you a fortune! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for Pippa’s ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ collection of vegetables for planting next month, along with a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, pull-out mini tunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Katherine Sorrell outlines how you can employ paint to colour your home beautiful. Most of us are cautious about using colour, so how can we boost our colour confidence? Easy: arm yourself with a little knowledge and make the effort to experiment. You can always repaint if you don’t like the results. Start by leafing through as many interiors books and magazines as possible. A wealth of effort and experience has gone into producing room sets that work for all kinds of tastes. And, all the leading paint manufacturers produce colour cards, brochures that demonstrate how different shades can be put together, and interactive free apps: try Dulux’s Visualizer or Crown’s MyRoomPainter, for example. Consider the sizes of your rooms: pale colours, because they contain a lot of white, seem to recede, enhancing a feeling of spaciousness, while darker colours absorb light and therefore appear more enclosing.

30

Similarly, ‘cool’ colours such as blue and green are more distancing than ‘warm’ colours such as red and yellow. This is why people tend to use paler, cooler colours in small rooms, and white on low ceilings, reserving bolder or darker colours for large, bright rooms. But break the rules if you wish: perhaps use a dark, warm colour to make a small room feel welcoming and intimate. For practicality, paint those parts of the house that show the dirt (such as a busy hallway) in a darkish shade, and consider a high-gloss, washable surface finish, too. A simple, one-colour scheme is relatively easy to get right – provided you choose the right colour. Combining two or more can be more challenging, but hugely rewarding. Once you have narrowed down your choices and tried the apps, create a mood board of magazine cuttings and swatches, layering colours and textures to build a balanced palette. Buy tester pots of paints and get a feel for the colours by painting and sticking A4-sized pieces of paper to the walls you’re planning to paint, and see what they look like as the light changes through the day. Also, paint the inside of a cardboard box to see how the colour changes as the walls reflect off each other. If you don’t want a classic colour palette, look out for fashion-forward hues. Dulux’s colour of the year is Cherished Gold, an earthy metallic that works well with both fresh pastels and rich jewel tones, while Pantone’s colours of the year are

Rose Quartz and a soft blue called Serenity. Crown’s autumn/winter palette is based around three looks: Out of the Dark, with black and charcoal plus bright yellow, pink and orange dashes; Skyscapes, shades of blue with grey and chalky neutrals; and Faded Berries, deep berry tones with mossy and grassy greens. So, research, find your favourite style and either follow fashion or go your own way - colour possibilities are endless.

NATURAL PAINTS Natural paints are generally made using combinations of ingredients such as linseed oil, lime, turpentine, citrus oil, chalk and earth and mineral pigments. They allow walls to breathe, so moisture is not trapped beneath - useful if your house is slightly damp - and they don’t become statically charged, thus reducing the build-up of dust on painted surfaces (good for allergy sufferers). Because they are more flexible, they tend not to crack or flake. They use either fully renewable raw materials or those that are in plentiful supply, and energy waste during manufacture is kept to a minimum. Manufacturers claim they are just as effective as conventional paints – if not more so – and, what’s more, they smell nice! Brands include Earthborn, Lakeland, Auro, Nutshell, Aglaia, Pots of Paint and Eico. IMAGE: Sherwood matt emulsion, Green Apple matt emulsion and Pastures matt emulsion; all £13.94 for 2.5l matt emulsion, Colours at B&Q, www.diy.com.

Bedroom Storage – The Solution In today’s consumer driven society, most people have a tendency to increase the amount of personal possessions they own sometimes on a daily or weekly basis. With the multitude of options, fashions and changing trends, the problem of how to store these precious treasures arises. Tucking them away into boxes, under the bed or out of the way usually means that it becomes such a pain to find or retrieve them at the appropriate time that they become unused and under enjoyed. Bedroom Storage and how it is organised is now something that people are considering more seriously. Traditional storage solutions haven’t changed much over the years. Free standing wardrobes, drawer chests or dressing tables, etc., are all still widely available but usually imported and only available on long lead times. The restriction with standard free standing furniture is that considering the footprint of the furniture, the storage efficiency of the unit is probably only 50% when you consider the space taken from floor to ceiling. However if you’re someone who likes to move house or change your room plan, you can’t knock the flexibility of free standing furniture. Fitted Bedroom Storage can be divided into 2 main categories - either mass produced or the totally bespoke. Either way the purpose of fitted storage is to attempt to maximise the storage efficiency of a space, therefore making our lifestyles more organised, less cluttered and leaving us with more time to actually enjoy what’s important. With mass produced furniture the modules are made to production requirements and then grouped together to best fit the room where possible. Normally filler pieces are used to cover the area where the units fail to cover. This could mean achieving 20-30% inefficiency. With totally bespoke furniture the purpose and requirements of what needs to be stored and how it will be used is a priority. Ultimately the potential to maximise the storage efficiency comes down to the ideas and skills of the designer and the open communication channels with the customer. Creativity and style also play an important part in the finishing looks and ascetics that should combine with the rest of the living space. Bespoke products offer the unique benefit of succeeding in generating a higher level of consumer satisfaction without having to compromise. You may think that this bespoke, individually designed closet space is only for the “rich and famous”. Well maybe that used to be the case and possibly still is with some more traditional furniture tradesmen. However with the progression of computer aided design technology and linking this direct to the manufacturing process, it is now possible to produce one unit as efficiently as one hundred units and in fact studies have shown that using these processes it has actually become an even more efficient way to manufacture. So an efficient company, like Fusion Robes, with a customer/design orientated approach should offer a competitive product designed exactly as you need it, even if you’re not “rich and famous”.

YOU CAN NOW RECYCLE MORE THAN EVER! RECYCLE PLASTIC, FANTASTIC. Now plastics from all over your house can be recycled. This includes shampoo, shower gel and cleaning product bottles from your bathroom, yoghurt pots, butter tubs and meat trays from your kitchen. Just remember to empty them, give them a wash and remove any plastic film before placing into your recycling bin or black kerbie box. Councillor James Baird, Chairman of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee said: “Within the Council area residents are very good at recycling from their homes and the Council hopes that the ability to recycle more household plastics will benefit the environment by reducing waste to landfill.

1 Sheets + Overs LOC104975 BT8 Magazine Sig 2 Back

“When viewing the Bryson Recycling facility at Mallusk I was delighted to hear that Northern Ireland companies process the materials collected from households to make usable end products. Cherry Pipes converts the plastic material into pipes for the agricultural, civil engineering and construction industries at their sites in Crumlin, Lurgan and Dungannon. Therefore each household in the Lisburn and Castlereagh area that recycle their plastic bottles, pots tubs and trays is playing its part in generating money into the local NI economy. “The companies that process the recycled material have also agreed to donate £1 per tonne collected to Children’s Heartbeat Trust through the Bryson Recycling ‘Recycling Rewards’ initiative for kerbie box collections. So please help raise money for this very worthwhile charity that supports local children affected by heart disease and their families simply by washing, drying and recycling appropriate household plastics,” concluded Councillor Baird. For further information on recycling in the Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council area log on to www.lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk, call the Recycling Hotline on 028 9250 9453 or email: recycling@lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk Councillor James Baird, Chairman of the Council's Environmental Services Committee is pictured with Katy Fulton, Operations Manager at the Bryson Recycling facility demonstrating the types of plastics that are accepted through the Council's household recycling scheme. 36

TINYLIFE Do you have a spare few hours every week to help a local family cope with the stress of caring for a premature or sick baby? Based in Carryduff, TinyLife is Northern Ireland's premature and sick baby charity. The charity provides a wide range of practical and emotional support services to families right across the province who are faced with the heartbreaking reality of premature birth or sickness at birth. Many of the babies we support are born as early as 24 weeks and weigh as little as 1lb. These babies often spend prolonged time in neonatal care and some have prolonged health complications. Bringing home a premature or sick baby in much more challenging than bringing home a full term infant. With this in mind, TinyLife offer a hospital to home support service. The service makes the first crucial years a little less daunting for both parents and baby/babies especially when they feel like they have nowhere else to turn. In fact, many parents call the service 'their lifetime'. TinyLife can offer parents the support of a fully trained volunteer who will come to the home for up to 4 hours each week and help them to feed/bath their baby/babies, attend hospital appointments or simply be a listening ear. Both the charity and the families rely heavily on the generosity of the volunteers, who give of their time freely to help others. Local TinyLife volunteer and mum of 2, Carol understands the value of her role. 'I was looking for a volunteering opportunity for a worthwhile cause to fill the spare time I had now that my children were of school age. As a mum myself, I felt that TinyLife was a particularly good fit. I undersand the challenges that parents of small children face on a daily basis and I know that an extra pair of hands always comes in useful'. TinyLife provides indepth training for volunteers, covering topics such as child protection training and volunteering with families of premature babies as well as ongoing support provided by the Family Support team who work within the 7 neonatal units across Northern Ireland. Carol said, 'I have been supporting 2 families, both with very different needs, since last year. Visits vary from week to week, one week I might be helping mum to feed her baby then the next I might be attending hospital appointments'. Helen Marks is the family support officer who looks after families located in the Belfast Trust area. She said, 'TinyLife could not operate this unique service without the help of our volunteers and I know firsthand that the families really value the contribution made to their lives by our volunteers. But as more and more premature and sick babies are born, the charity desperately needs more volunteers. No experience is necessary and duties can vary between families; some mums simply want a listening ear whilst others need a more hands on approach, perhaps help attending hospital appointments or in the case of twins, feeding one baby whilst mum changes or feeds the other'. Carol added, 'Volunteering for TinyLife is a very rewarding experience, I really enjoy visiting my families every week and I know that Helen is only a phone call away should I need support too. Knowing that I am making a difference, no matter how small, to someone in need makes it all the more worthwhile'. If you would like to hear more about volunteering with TinyLife in the Belfast area, please contact Helen on 07702 384787 or via email: helen@tinylife.org.uk 38

POLICE ADVICE - DOMESTIC ABUSE A new campaign was launched in June by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and Policing and Community Safety Partnerships (PCSPs) to encourage people to report incidents of domestic abuse. The key message of the campaign ‘If you feel like you’re walking on eggshells that’s domestic abuse’ is designed to encourage the reporting of incidents and make victims aware that they can take steps to stop it. The police respond to an incident of Domestic Abuse every 19 minutes. While this is a shocking statistic there is a belief that a large number of domestic incidents are still going unreported. Detective Chief Superintendent George Clarke, Head of the PSNI’s Public Protection Branch, said: “Between March 2015 and April 2016, there were 28,392 domestic abuse incidents reported to police, which is an increase of 105 incidents compared to the same period last year. We welcome the increase because we believe this shows confidence is increasing in the police. However; we know that incidents are still going unreported. “Very often people who are being abused feel isolated, vulnerable and frightened and don’t know where to turn. Through the campaign we are encouraging all victims regardless of age, race, gender or sexuality to come forward and report the matter to the police. Speak out to stop it. “It is our job to keep people safe. Our role is about prevention, protection and prosecution – to prevent further violence, to protect the victim, children and other vulnerable people and to facilitate the prosecution of offenders. We work closely with our partners, statutory and voluntary, to ensure the victims get the help they deserve, to highlight the issue of Domestic Abuse and to explore ways in which we can keep communities safer.” As part of awareness raising the Police Service alongside the local PCSPs are supporting initiatives to encourage victims to report this heinous crime. There are dedicated domestic abuse officers across Northern Ireland to ensure that all domestic abuse crimes are investigated, as well as providing support and information to victims about police procedures and legal proceedings. Domestic abuse cannot of course be dealt with solely by the police and they will continue to work with the PCSP and other key stakeholders to highlight the issue of domestic abuse and explore together ways in which we can make communities safer.

A 24-hour Domestic and Sexual Helpline is available to anyone who has concerns about domestic or sexual violence, now or in the past on 0808 802 1414. The PCSP and the Police should strongly encourage anyone suffering from domestic abuse to contact their local police on the non-emergency 101 or in an emergency always call 999.

BARRACK STREET BAND (CORK) AND ORMEAU CONCERT BAND Barrack Street Intermediate Band from Cork visited Belfast for the first time in August. A cross community workshop was held for both bands in St Dorotheas Church Halls, off Gilnahirk Road. Initially the bands split into brass and reed, using separate rooms. Ms Shauna McCullough (conductor Barrack Street Band) taking the brass and Mr Gary Shields (conductor Ormeau Concert Band) taking the reeds. Later the sections combined to form a band of approximately 55 players. A concert followed to which the public were invited. The music was thoroughly enjoyed by both players and public. At the conclusion of the concert the visitors presented a beautifully engraved crystal plaque to the chairman of Ormeau - Mr Bill Green. This was an extremely successful cross community venture and we all hope it or similar can be repeated. We are grateful to all who took part in the organising of the event and to the church secretary, Deborah, whose support was very much appreciated. During their 4-day visit, they also played in public at Belfast City Hall, Titanic Quarter and Duncairn Community Festival. The Ormeau Concert Band have vacancies in all sections, both brass and reed. For those interested in joining we are on Facebook/YouTube or contact us on Mob 07803 019666.

CARRYDUFF HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Join a friendly and fun community choir. No auditions or previous experience is needed we have a very mixed ability choir from those who sing in the shower, to ex choristers. Some read music, some learn from ear but with rehearsal each Friday evening everyone works well together and we make a fantastic sound.

We sing musical theatre, classical, jazz, gospel, a bit of everything. We hope to see you there!

The talks are open to non-members but if you would like to join just come along and have a chat with the Membership Secretary (Treasurer).

Our New term starts Friday 2nd September 2016 in Ballygowan Village Hall. Starting time 7.30pm.

Note: A voluntary contribution of £2.00 per meeting from visitors would be appreciated.

You will be made most welcome.

HEART RESEARCH UK Medical research charity, Heart Research UK, believes life is for living and living it to the full. Coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer, but fortunately a significant number of cases are preventable and the charity’s priority is to stop people getting the condition in the first place. With such a wide variety of healthy options available nowadays, there’s no better time to kick start your future with a healthier attitude. From healthy food options, low cost gyms, nutritional labelling on food and smoking restrictions, the support is out there and Heart Research UK is urging people to focus on their health, not just now but into the future. Your health is, after all, the most important thing you’ll ever own.

Heart Research UK is asking the nation to get its thinking caps on and plan something for World Heart Day to help spread the health message. Whether you organise a healthy bake off, a sponsored Step-a-Thon, a 5 aside football match, a static bike ride, skydive or even a sponsored weight loss, the charity can support you with ideas, advice and all you need to make a success of your World Heart Day activity. Why not plan your World Heart Day at work, with friends, in your local community or with your family. Heart Research UK truly believes that money raised locally should be spent back in the communities it was raised. Its mission is to always spend money locally, helping hearts near you. If you believe we should be a health conscious country, with a healthy attitude to exercise and diet, then get in touch to help Heart Research UK on its journey to get Britain healthier. Please call 0113 234 7474, email community@heartresearch.org.uk or visit www.heartresearch.org.uk/events/whd for lots of ideas and inspiration. #worldheartday
