Welcome to the May issue of the Carryduff Focus Hello again Everyone. What a difference four weeks can make! When I last sat down to write the welcome note (for the April issue) it was snowing heavily outside. I don't think any of us expected such huge amounts of snow nor that it would sit around for so long afterwards. As someone said, it looked like Narnia - someone left the wardrobe door open! Today it’s sunny and a good deal warmer. It looks like Spring might finally be here. I’ve written before about my fascination with the orbiting International Space Station - the current Commander is Canadian astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield. Wills - Part 2 In part 2 of our feature on making a Will, we cover some more of the most common questions we receive from clients in relation to making a Will. “I want to ensure that a family member does not receive any monies from my estate – is this possible?” The best way to do this is to make your intentions clear. To do this you can either put a statement into the Will explaining why you have chosen to leave this person out, or you can leave the person a nominal gift such as a trinket or small sum of money. The reason for doing this is that the family member could potentially contest your Will. To contest a Will means that a Judge will ultimately decide if that family member is entitled to more than what he/she received, and a Court has the power to redistribute your estate accordingly. A Court will look at the evidence to try and establish your intentions. If it can be shown your intentions were to leave the family member out of the Will, any potential case by that family member will be weakened. “I have a Will which leaves everything to my parents. I am due to get married and want to ensure that my parents and my spouse each receive a third of my estate, what should I do?” The law currently says that once a person marries any previous Will is automatically rendered invalid. This would mean that your estate would fall under the law of intestacy and your spouse would be entitled to the first £450,000 of your estate plus half of any remainder. Your parents would be entitled to the other half. Therefore you should make a new Will as soon as possible to reflect your wishes. “Can I appoint more than one executor to manage the distribution of my estate?” Yes, you can elect as many executors as you wish. However be aware that an executor does not have to take up the post. They can choose to renounce. We advise that you elect at least two executors to deal with the estate. This means that if one person renounces or passes away there will be someone else to deal with your affairs. DIY or GSI? If you do some of the work yourself, it will save money. Know your limitations, however. Tiling and painting are straightforward and even plastering or putting down flooring can be tackled by a competent DIYer. If in doubt, however, ‘Get Someone In’ and, when it comes to electrics, remember that there are strict safety regulations controlling what work may be carried out by a non-professional. In another of our series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature, right here in Carryduff This Spring I am celebrating 42 years living in Carryduff, the first 30 on the Cadger Road, and the rest where I am now. I can’t talk about my previous home and not mention Toby, the Border Collie we eventually adopted from our neighbours, the Martins. Or did he adopt us? When we first ‘took him over’, he was quite wild and undisciplined, but Mummy and I bought him a kennel, and he took to it right away, much to our relief, and headed into it every night with his custard cream. His (highly intelligent) breed meant he was easy to train, and in a short time he was obeying simple commands, such as to sit and to give his paw. He had a magnificent flail of a tail, which was nearly always waving back and forth, in tune with his happy mood; although he did occasionally get depressed. He lived to 17 or 18 years, and would have gone on for much longer, if he hadn’t got into one fight too many. Partly because we felt he wasn’t legally ours, we never thought of having him neutered. In retrospect, that was a great pity, as a simple ‘snip’ would have put an end to all the trouble he had with other dogs. (The other side of that coin is that Toby’s progeny have probably colonised most of County Down by now!!) He used to accompany me as I went jogging along the road, but I reckon his real vocation was as a steeple-chaser. He had a wonderful spring in his hind legs, and I once watched in disbelief, as he cleared a 6-foot hedge with the greatest of ease. I never used a lead, and he must have had an innate sense of self -preservation, travelling up & down that road as much as he did day and night, and never once getting hit! The fields and hedgerows were his real hunting-ground, though; and oh, how he enjoyed the thrill of the chase! Toby loved rabbits, you see, especially young ones, and ate them frequently, usually on the front lawn. On many occasions, out for a walk, my mother and I would watch as he picked up a scent, ducked through the hedge into a field, and took off up the hill at a great rate. He was soon to be seen disappearing over the horizon; only to return hours later, panting and covered in mud! Nothing else felt as good to me as running my fingers through the thick mane that ran down the front of his chest. He had a magnificent coat—nearly all black—which was frequently admired by passers-by. When we went on holidays, we left him at home, along with a supply of food which his ex-owners willingly fed him! When I arrived home from work, we had a ritual where he would give me his paw, and then I would kneel down and he would place both his paws on my shoulders. We stayed like that for a while in mutual admiration! When he died we buried his ashes in the front border (where else for a Border Collie?) and planted a standard rose to mark the place: we always referred to it as ‘Toby’s rose’. It’s probably still there. What a faithful and loyal friend he became to us over the years, willingly transferring his allegiance to the folk he intuitively knew would treat him with respect and compassion. And in return we received that un-judgemental loyalty from him. That’s all any of us really need, isn’t it? To be treated with respect and compassion. Is this the reason why so many pet owners prefer the company of their dog or cat to that of human beings? Their love and loyalty are total and unconditional. Yes, there is a lot we can learn from Helen Long our loyal canine companions, present and past! 34

AT THE CINEMA: Dark Skies 15, (96 mins) The sci-fi/horror genre has become rather stagnant in recent years. Indeed, any fecundity seems to have dwindled to the point where old ground must be retread in order to produce a movie with any semblance of coherence and structure. That is exactly the problem with this picture; writer/director Scott Stewart seems to have sifted through the sci-fi annals and glued together the parts which suit his purpose. The result is decidedly mediocre and anything but seminal. Keri Russell (Mission: Impossible III) and Josh Hamilton (The Bourne Identity) assume the lead roles as the parents of the Barrett family, who are plagued by eerie phenomena. This leads mother Lucy (Keri Russell) to fear one of her brood is being prepared to be abducted by ‘greys’. Each plays their part well but they never reach great acting heights; indeed they never seem too invested in the movie as a whole despite the more mundane issues they must deal with (like financial hardship) as well as protecting their family. Dakota Goyo and Kadan Rockett do a better job as the Barretts’ kids, managing to be simultaneously creepy and endearing and ground the movie before it loses all sense of reality. A convenient Google search of these strange phenomena leads to a meeting with weirdo JK Simmons who is just like ‘Spooky’ Mulder, but with a not so well-developed character. The director does create a few genuinely spine-tingling moments but these are few and unfortunately so, as this could have made this movie so much more memorable. As it is, it proves an utterly forgettable experience, maybe that’s for the best. 2 / 5
On DVD: Life of Pi 12A (114 mins) Director Ang Lee has never avoided filming the difficult. Whether he tackles Jane Austen (Sense and Sensibility), Marvel Comics (Hulk) or the taboo (Brokeback Mountain), the result is usually worth it. Life of Pi, in many ways, proves to be Lee’s greatest challenge. Way back in 2003, Fox Pictures bought the rights to Yann Martel’s best-selling, prize-winning book and in the intervening ten years different directors have been linked to the film, only to give up and admit defeat. Would Life of Pi ever make the leap from page to celluloid? It certainly looked doubtful, but then along came Ang Lee, and thank God he did. One of the most striking things about this movie is its visual elegance; aesthetically it is simply beautiful. Not just the background, which captures the reflective splendour of the ocean, but every animal looks like it has been plucked from a David Attenborough documentary. In particular, the whale, jellyfish, meerkats (not Sergei) and Richard Parker, the stunningly gorgeous Bengal tiger. The effects department really does a stellar job. Suraj Sharma plays the teenage Pi, around whom the bulk of the story revolves. And a masterful performance he gives too. Our titular hero is stranded aboard a lifeboat with only Mr Parker for company, so he speaks in monologue for the majority of his screen time. Yet he holds the audience’s interest with gentle nuance and an ability to include the audience in his monumental and absorbing tale. At the centre of Martel’s novel is belief. But it is not a lecture on deistic credulity, rather it is one big metaphor or parable, if you will, and while we, as viewers, are captivated by the aweinspiring visual display, we are subliminally asked: what is it that we believe? 4/5 36

Moneyrea Primary School Our amazing PTA handed over £10,000 to the school to purchase new iPads. The money was raised at a ‘Stars in Their Eyes’ event organised at la Mon Hotel. Millennium Integrated Primary School Finally, having been delayed by the snow, our school production of Annie was presented to parents, families and friends of MIPS. The final of the Belfast ‘A’ Section was held in Lisburn Leisure Centre on the 12 April 2013. There were more than 10 schools represented from the greater Belfast area with the teams from Fullerton House, St Brides and Millennium IPS battling it out in the final. In a closely fought contest, with only points between the teams, Millennium IPS emerged victorious to become the Belfast ‘A’ Section Champs. The whole team performed brilliantly with a special mention for Laura Shaw and Holly Cunningham for their individual contribution. The girls have now advanced to the last 10 teams in Northern Ireland and will take part in the Northern Ireland Final to be held in Limavady on the 8 June 2013. We wish them good luck in the finals and hope as many supporters as possible can make the journey and cheer them on. Well done to our girls ‘B’ team who also took part in the Finals in Lisburn. They played extremely well but were out-gunned in the end and were knocked out in the semi-final stages. The girls were delighted to come away with bronze medals.

St Ita’s Primary School - Environmental Youth Speak Final Clara McGowan from Mrs Maguire’s P7 class made it to the Grand Final of the Environmental Youthspeak Competition. Having won the Castlereagh area heat of the competition, Clara was invited to the Northern Ireland final which this year was hosted by Limavady Council and compered by local celebrity and illusionist, David Meade. The competition encourages environmental awareness among young people by giving them the opportunity to research and debate environmental issues. Pupils can improve their communication skills, develop self-confidence and articulate arguments based on environmental facts. Clara stunned the judges with her speech entitled “My Waste’s Got Talent”. The competition was fierce and Clara was pipped at the post by another contestant. However, a great day was had by all. Congratulations to our Cross Country Team who did so fantastically well in the Castlereagh Borough Council Cross Country Finals. In very windy and cold conditions the girls went out in force. Rachel Scott finished 1st followed very closely by Amy Stewart, who had the run of her life, in 3rd, Khara Edgar 4th and Sophie Senior 6th. Ellen Kealey, Niamh Loughran and Rachel Agnew also finished well up the 60+ field.
The girl’s team came an amazing 1st place. The boys ran a tactical race with Fintan Farnan putting in a tremendous sprint finish to clinch first place followed by Kevin McKeown 23rd and Daniel Connor 25th. The boys were unfortunate to be pushed into 4th place in the team event. Our girls and Fintan qualify for the South Eastern Finals on May 2nd. We wish them all the best of luck at the finals! 42
