What’s On Where in Gippsland

Cover story... The VHRR was established in 1976 to promote Historic Motor Racing in Victoria, and where possible assist with its growth throughout Australia. Race meetings and speed events are held though-out the year, giving owners of historic racing cars, and those interested in such vehicles, the opportunity to exercise their cars and feel the exhilaration of running such fine machinery, or just to be close by. The club has been so successful over the years that meetings held at the Grand Prix Circuit at Phillip Island in February/ March, and at Sandown Park in November, now attract some of the most awe-inspiring cars from Australia, New Zealand, and the rest of the world. We regularly see cars from the UK, USA, Germany, Hong Kong etc. Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, BRM, Maserati, Cooper, Jaguar, HMW, Maybach, MG, Lago Talbot, plus many Australian specials. Many overseas owners and drivers find the warmth of the welcome at these meetings,

the charisma of racing at these fabulous circuits, and the Australian hospitality, brings them back to this country year after year. Added to the racing is the possibility to holiday in world class resorts around Australia, either before or after the events. Another incentive for visiting the race at Phillip Island early in the year, is that the Australian Grand Prix (the first GP race of the season) is held a week or so later. What an opportunity! Come and see world class racing, Historic and modern at two of the best circuits in the world. It is not necessary to own your own historic car. Many VHRR members join the club to be involved in the historic movement. To assist if they wish, or to merely enjoy the vicarious pleasures of historic racing. The VHRR caters for cars meeting the requirements of the 5th Category in Australia, or invited cars. An all-time record entry of 573 applications has been received for the 2012 Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport, ensuring it will be the largest historic motor racing meeting every staged in the Southern Hemisphere. With over-capacity fields for many categories, it appears certain that around 550 vehicles spanning eight decades will face the starter’s flag for 43 events over the March 10-11

Three Town Partnership Set To Present the Largest Event In Wellington THE 2012 GOLDEN BEACH END OF SUMMER SURF FESTIVAL IS THE HOST TO: GOLDEN BEACH SURF FISHING COMPETITION

GOLDEN BEACH GOLF CLUB Now a bigger part of the Golden Beach End of Summer Surf Festival. The Great Hole In One Competition Jackpot Prize now $1000 Commencing approx 14 years ago the residents of Golden Paradise beach decided they wanted a Golf Course to pass away the days of beautiful weather noted for in this region. Faced with thick scrub volunteers forged a nine hole golf course in a very short period of time and finally a couple of years ago built their own clubrooms for members. For a bush course these greens are well kept and are a credit to the group that look after them. 3 years ago the Committee looked for a way to join the End of Summer Surf Festival and decided to run a Hole In One Competition to provide additional entertainment for those who had come for the Golden Beach Surf Fishing Competition. In its first year the Jackpot went off and proved to be a real crowd pleaser so the committee decide to continue with it each year.

Now in its 3rd year the Jack pot prize is valued at $1000 with the potential to grow even larger if a sponsor comes forward. Even so the $1000 jackpot is set to draw a large group of punters and at only $1 a hit even a novice would want to have a go. If it does not go off this year it will jackpot to at least $2000 next year. So if you’re coming down to Golden Beach for Easter to enter the Fishing Competition bring your golf clubs with you because if the fish aren’t biting $1 could just get you $1000 Haven’t got clubs no matter loan clubs available at no extra cost. One thing we can guarantee is you will have a most enjoyable day and lots of fun so come and join us this Easter at Golden Beach, for 4 days of Fishing and or Golf what could be better? www.goldenbeachgippsland.com.au

LOCHSPORT – GOLDEN/PARADISE BEACH – SEASPRAY to WOODSIDE Less travel for participants with Official Weigh-In Stations situated at each of the following towns LOCHSPORT – GOLDEN BEACH - WOODSIDE After 53 years organisers were forced to change the date of the event to Easter following the worst bush fires in Victorias History (Black Saturday) when changes to legislation recommended by the Royal Commission meant the foreshore area would close on a day forecast as code red. To ensure extreme weather conditions did not interrupt/cancel the event it was decided to move the event to a time zone less likely to impact on it (Easter). THREE TOWN PARTNERSHIP Lochsport Anglers Association last year partnered with us to provide the Official Weigh-In Station at Lochsport and such was the success it inspired the move to extend the boundaries to Woodside.

The Woodside Community have NOW joined us as partners to help deliver the best Event ever on the Ninety Mile Beach/ Our NEW LOGO (see above) provides better recognition and joint branding benefits as the Historic Competition gains a physical identity. Strong support from sponsors means We are no longer trying to save the Fishing Competition we are building it into the largest Single Event in Wellington that will serve to provide immediate sustainable benefits to three communities through increased business opportunity and tourism to this region of the Ninety Mile Beach. Marley Point Yacht Race

What’s On Where in Gippsland

10 March 2012 00:00 to 11 March 2012 23:59 Finishing at Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club

Lake Wellington Yacht Club conducts its 44th APC LOGISTICS MARLAY POINT OVERNIGHT RACE, Australia’s premier race for Trailable yachts on the Labour Day Long weekend, Saturday March 10th and Sunday March 11th 2012. The race boasts a proud history commencing in 1968 after a discussion amongst club members about the merits of a long distance night time race. The first race with only about twenty starters captured the imagination of the Yachting fraternity throughout Australia and even from overseas. The halcyon days of the high rolling eighties saw the largest ever entry of 657 yachts in 1986 making it at that time arguably the largest yacht race in the world.

Changing economic times saw a gradual decline in entries with numbers over the last few years averaging around 150 with the 40th Anniversary Race in 2008 drawing over 200 entries. This, however, has not dampened the magic of the event with its unique courses and wide appeal to beginners and experts alike. Lake Wellington Yacht Club has established an enviable reputation as running a professional and safe event with a large fleet of support craft from the Paynesville Coastguard. The event is a boon to local businesses and is a genuine community effort with many organisations assisting this tiny country yacht club run a major event on the Australian yachting calendar. This year, 150+ yachts, families and supporters, from all over Australia plus hundreds of spectators are expected to converge on Marlay Point, 22k from Sale on Lake Wellington in Gippsland for the start of the event. All divisions will head off together at 7-45pm in a spectacular mass start. This year, slower trailer sailers will race directly from Marlay Point to Paynesville with the remaining faster trailer sailers and other including sports trailerables and multi hull divisions continuing through Paynesville, around Raymond Island and back to the finish at Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club. What’s On Where in Gippsland

With the Gippsland Lakes water starting to clear and the huge black bream starting to chew there is no better time to run a bream tournament than mid March which is why the weekend of the 17th and 18th of March will see the Gippsland Lakes come alive with the sound of fast bream boats and cracking bags of bream as bream tournament teams from all over Australia take to the water for the Club Marine East Gippsland Bream Classic. Being the 2nd round of the 2012 Humminbird Vic Bream Classic Series each team of 2 anglers will be competing to not only take out the title of Metung’s best, but also will be fighting it out for up to $15,000 in cash and prizes not to mention a spot in the Humminbird Vic Bream Classic Grand Final back at Metung in late November. There are few better places than the Gippsland Lakes to hold a Vic Bream Classics tournament allowing anglers to but heads with some of the weariest, hard fighting blue nosed bream found anywhere in Australia. Besides being the holy grail of Victorian bream angling, the Gippsland Lakes region gives teams an endless number of fishing options from snags, rock walls and sunken timber in the Tambo, Mitchell & Nicholson Rivers to numerous amounts of jetties, moored boats and protected harbours around Metung, Paynesville and Lakes Entrance. If you have ever tackled with a kilo plus black bream then you know how hard it can be to get that big bruiser in the net. Now just imagine that your using 2lb to 4lb line the thickness of cotton near oyster incrusted rocks or snags, which that bream knows intimately and finally add that fact that that one bream could help you win a share in over $15,000 in cash and prizes and you will get a small insight into the pressure that can be on competing teams as they compete for the top prize. If you love your lure fishing for bream and want to learn more than there is no better way to fast track your skills than to compete in the Vic Bream Classic Series, as there are any number of highly skilled anglers competing who will point you in the right direction, tell you the hot lure to use and best techniques to enable you to land that big bag of bream. The Teams format creates a fantastic social feel to the weekend while still maintaining a high level of competition among teams. Since its inception in 2005 the Humminbird Vic Bream Classic Series has turned into a large family of passionate anglers who love to fish, socialise and have fun across

MAFFRA MOTOR MUSEUM

Let’s explore Wellington

The Maritime Museum in the heart of historic Port Albert features displays which tell stories of frontier Gippsland, starting with the dramatic wrecking of the paddle steamer “Clonmel” at the Port Albert Entrance in 1841 and the years when it was the “Golden Port” with the rush of prospectors bound for the Goldfields of Walhalla and Omeo and the shipping of tonnes of gold out to Melbourne. Many 19th century shipwrecks in Bass Strait necessitating the building of spectacular lighthouses which were serviced from Port Albert and there is a room devoted to items from Deal Island and Cliffy Island and the restored Citadel Light is a feature of the outside exhibits. Other displays are on the unique fishing fleets of Corner Inlet with the “Morning Star”, a century old 30 foot shallow

ROTARY CLUB OF MAFFRA MARDI GRAS ORIGINS words by Liz Shepard

In 1957 a Back to Maffra was held which was very successful. During this event six local business men got together and decided to start and raise money for the Maffra District Hospital. These men were Arthur Wattts, Ken Davies, Lex Leslie, Athol Ralph, Harry Van der Mewe and Max Jennings. It was first held on the long weekend in March and became known as the

This year’s winner Britanny Neille

Maffra Mardi Gras. I believe the Hospital had a big day organized for the Sunday, so the Mardi Gras was held on the Saturday. The fund raising started off with a couple of entrants who were nominated. They raised money

for the hospital with penny votes. The entrant getting the most votes and money was the winner with all proceeds going to the hospital. The Mardi Gras committee kept 10% of the money raised, so they could organise the next years Mardi Gras. The committee often had to improvise having to borrow tarpaulins from the factory one year to shelter them from the rain. They also had train rides in Johnson street for the children. The format has changed a little since 1958. The entrants still raise money over a 6 week period. The entrants represent community groups from throughout the Wellington Shire. The money raised goes towards special projects that the community groups are working on. The Mayor of the Wellington Shire hosts a Civic Reception at Duart where the President of the Rotary club of Maffra Mardi Gras committee introduces the entrants. Each entrant makes a speech specifying which Club they represent and what their special project is. The Mayor then announces that the fund raising may begin. Typically on the Friday

evening of the launch there are lots of raffle tickets being sold with all other fund raising events occurring from the next day. For a number of years the afternoon commenced with a bicycle criterium which includes the Keith & Max Rowley Memorial race. This year the inaugural Maffra Idol competition will be held during the afternoon with the Winner announced during the evening. The winner will also be in the parade. During the afternoon their will be carnival rides, market stalls, food stalls and street entertainment where families can gather in the beautiful tree lined main street of Maffra. The street parade commences at 7pm with our Patron Arthur Watts leading it. Last year we had a special school section for floats which were sponsored by Woolworths who generously donated the prize money. Along with the school section, there are 2 Perpetual Trophies to present. They are the Joan Laws Memorial Cup and the Liz Shepard Memorial Cup. . The announcement of the outright winner of the fund raising is also announced at the same time. This is expected to happen at 8.30pm.The entrants are given an opportunity to thank

everyone and to talk about their clubs special project on which their fund raising money is going to be spent. In 2010 a FREEZA event was trialed but has been taken off the program . It will commence at 7.30pm and is targeting the youth of the area. Over the years a sum in excess of $3.5 million has been raised and reinvested in the communities of the Wellington Shire. It is interesting to note that the first 2 entrants raised the sum of 10 pounds. On behalf of the Rotary Club of Maffra Mardi Gras committee we wish all entrants and their committee a great 6 weeks.

Arthur has seen the Rotary Club of Maffra sponsor the Maffra Apex Club, the Rotary Club of Heyfied, along with Rotaract, Probus and Inner Wheel Clubs. He has seen the Rotary Club of Maffra assist with the establishment of the Maffra Memorial Swimming Pool(1960), the first street stall caravan (1967), saw the 70th and 100th Anniversary of Rotary. Arthur has been involved in many other community projects conducted by the Rotary Club of Maffra.

While being involved with the Rotary Club of Maffra he became the Foundation Chairman of the Maffra Chamber of Commerce, was the Foundation Chairman of the Maffra Mardi Gras, serving 21yrs in that position, he was Chairman of Maffra Amusements, and was Chairman of the Maffra Youth club for 8yrs. A highlight of Arthur’s involvement with Rotary was having a Paul Harris Fellow bestowed on him in 1984. More recently he has been awarded a Sapphire Pin. Guests speakers, Rotarian Richard McDowell and Rotarian Peter Anderson performed a mock interview with Arthur to see if he was a worthy candidate for Rotary prior to Rotarian Ross Neilson announcing that this was a “This is Your Life” Arthur Watts. Other Guests who amused the audience with stories of their shared interests with Arthur were Fred Engellener, Wayne Marsden, Dick Moulton and Jacob Malmo. Needless to say Arthur was given the microphone to respond. Arthur thanked Dulcie, his bride of nearly 68yrs before becoming speechless. Rotarian Pat Cameron presented Dulcie with a lovely bouquet of flowers in appreciation of her allowing Rotary to share so much of her husband’s time.

How to hang a door Bedroom and other internal doors tend to be hollow-core and 35mm thick, with a standard size of 2040 x 820mm. Entrance or front doors are usually solid and 40mm thick. The thickness of the door determines the size of the rebate, which is usually 3mm wider than the door. Measure the old door to work out the necessary height, width and thickness of the new one before buying. STEP 1 Attach hinges to the door Transfer hinge positions from the old door to the new one. Make fluted cuts across the grain for a recess the thickness of the hinge leaf, securing with the supplied screws. TIP: If using bigger new hinges, ad-

just the recess on the jamb with a chisel. STEP 2 Attach the door Position the door in the jamb then lift and wedge it to clear the floor by 5mm. Check the new hinges align with the old recesses, securing to the jambs with the screws supplied. TIP The door should have a clearance of about 3mm all round. STEP 3 Drill the handle hole Close the door to transfer the centre-line of the existing striker plate on the door, marking the latch back-set distance, usually 60-70mm, on both faces and drilling an appropriate-size hole using a holesaw drill.. STEP 4 Drill the latch hole

Use a spade bit to drill an appropriate-size hole, usually 24mm, through the centre-line on the edge of the door, into the handle hole. STEP 5 Attach the latch Insert the latch into the latch hole to draw around the plate, then use a hammer and chisel to make a recess so the plate sits flush with the edge of the door, securing with the supplied screws. STEP 6 Secure the door handle Slide the spindle of the handle through the latch, with an even overhang either side, mark the position of the screws to drill holes with a 2mm twist bit, securing handles with the supplied screws.

Koola the Koala at Gumbuya Park Gumbuya Park has recently opened a new Koala Exhibit, which currently houses Koola. He is our new male Koala and is three a half years old. Koola means ”Koala” in Koori. Koola is a Northern Koala so his fur is much denser than Victorian Koalas, he weighs 6kg which is alot smaller than the Southern Koalas found in Victoria. During the hot weather Koola likes nother better than to sit under his sprinkler either sleeping or eating his favourite fresh leaves. Koola has joined our Koala encounters program and loves nothing more than to be the

centre of attention. Unlike most Koalas Koola is very affectionate enjoying his daily cuddles and following the keepers around his enclosure. Koalas do sleep up to 19hours a day and Koola is no exception. His time awake is spent eating his leaves and watching all the park visitors who walk by his enclosure. Gumbuya Park is very excited to have such an adorable cuddly Koala and will keep you informed of his progress. You can meet Koola in person by booking one of his Close Encounters sessions. Just call Gumbuya Park on 5629 2613.

Free electric BBQ facilities and picnic tables are provided in the reserve above the ramp, along with a shaded rotunda lookout area,

Every now and then in your travels you come across a little Gem, a place that’s warm and welcoming. One such place is The “Grantville Pantry”. The Grantville Pantry has been owned and operated by Pam Calderwood for the past four years. Pam has painstakingly built the business through hard work and adopting the philosophy if it’s not home made in store it doesn’t get sold. Pam credits the success of the store to having well trained staff and insists on high standards. Pam, a Gippsland girl herself, employs five other local girls to carry out the arduous daily tasks of preparing a fresh selection of home cooked foods for her customers, whether they are her loyal local followers, or as I discovered when in her store recently, one of many weary travellers passing through. On that occasion the two gents travelling through remarked that, “We come here every year on our trip to Phillip Island. The pies are the best I’ve ever had”. I must confess I am partial to the gourmet pies myself. Pam believes that there are many ingredients (pardon the pun) to a successful café business. One of the most important is the coffee! Pam uses Griffiths Coffee, an

Australian Coffee company since 1879. Griffiths source their beans from leading coffee growing regions in South America, Asia and Africa. Griffiths select their beans carefully to ensure they are consistently high quality and cup daily on a batch-by-batch basis to ensure consistency in flavour. Pam trains her staff, so Grantville Pantry customers get the same fantastic cup of coffee every time they visit the cafe. Pam had a background of managing a local tourist café before heading into the world of small business. She is passionate about local produce and provides an offering of local produce for sale within her store including jams, honey staight from the farm at Flynn, Hope Farm breads that contains organic sourdoughs, orange and almond cake and gluten free products and if in season, even the odd bunch of fresh Koo Wee Rup asparagus. In short if you’re travelling through the humble township of Grantville, take advantage of the ample parking outside of the Grantville Pantry, pop in and see the friendly staff and order a dish from the array of culinary delights or just enjoy a well made coffee..... Enjoy - A. Stevens

In the late 1980’s the appearance of the town was transformed for the cameras to look like the 1960’s in a television miniseries on Aboriginal boxer, Lionel Rose, who was raised in the region in Jackson’s Track, near Drouin Some shop fronts were restored and the main street of the town was filled with old cars to recreate the era.

Garfield Victoria Today Since the beginnings as a railway and timber town, and later a dairy and potato farming and orchard area, Garfield Victoria has always been a close community, with almost everybody knowing everyone else, and in some cases four generations of family staying in the (mainly), farming area. Recent growth has seen a doubling of residential area and the (2006), upgrading of the Railway Line from Melbourne to Traralgon with increases in frequency of services by upgraded modern trains, is an attraction to new residents. Previously derelect shops on the main street are now reoccupied. The town has an Australian Rules football team playing in the Ellinbank Football League. Garfield Victoria has an attractive undulating golf course on Thirteen Mile Road run by the Garfield Golf Club. A modern community swimming pool operates in the summer months within the recreation precinct where there is also the lawn bowling club, netball and tennis courts, skateboarding site, along with the newly regenerated football oval beside which is the community hall and children’s playground which local groups utilise for a variety of functions. The extraordinary talent of Cassandra Rijs Cassandra Rijs is a young, mostly self-taught artist. Since she was old enough to pick up a crayon, art has been her passion and a means for self-expression. Rijs’ work is expressive and varies from subtle to overtly honest and must be viewed and enjoyed with an open mind. Her new works give you an upclose and personal

glimpse into her world, where her unique perspectives of the world and those intimately close to her can be seen in both her subject matter and her intense attention to detail. Cassandra Rijs studied art at Southern Cross University in Lismore, she has since worked as an independent freelance artist and has exhibited throughout Australia and in London. Her work has been chased by enthusiastic art collectors worldwide. In The Flesh’ is an exhibition of works that explore, expose and exploit the unabashed beauty and complexity of flesh. A collection of small works, from close up studies of the creases of a well worn face to intimate explorations of flesh submerged in water. This is an exhibition that will elicit curiosity and awe as you explore the intricacies of flesh, captured in such exquisite detail that a pore makes claim to it’s own existence. Cassandra Rijs has a love and passion for painting flesh and delves into her subjects with a fresh, honest and unassuming way of seeing and observing. Beauty is seen in imperfection and is exploited to the point of ambiguity; flesh immersed in water is studied curiously while being diligently captured and celebrated on canvas; and voluptuous breasts

are contorted in an expression of inner conflict with the flesh.

Artistic Gippsland

Be inspired by Vasy Petros

I’ve always been interested in art. I remember winning an art competition in the 60’s run by the then Native Bird Guild of Victoria for primary school students. An important looking man in a suit visited and presented me with a cash prize. My hard working parents were so proud. I knew then, I wanted to pursue art. Of course art was not considered a viable career, ‘lots of work for nothing’, Dad would say. It’s true, you cannot make art a job... it’s a journey in itself, it takes time, patience and self exploration, so my art was put on hold for many years. During the 80’s, my partner and I discovered Venus Bay. Being avid travellers and keen campers, we were enthralled by the remote beauty of the coastline. ... wide stretch of beach and dune unmatched anywhere in Victoria, and so, a small block of land was the very first thing we invested in. It was not until 20 years later, after numerous visits to the area, we finally built ‘Seagrass’. Venus Bay features in my artwork and I’m pleased to be able to invite and share with visitors a place that never fails to inspire. So much so, that it has reignited my love for art all over again. I just take photos of anything, strolling along the beach, the quiet river inlet or through the many nature trails. When inspiration comes, you take it any way you can. Hence my work on collage... having no paint tools, I once experimented with old magazines on hand. It was like a puzzle which forced me to look at the complexity in the overall simplicity of things. Scraps of paper pieced together to replicate every detail.

Life here forces you to look at things in detail, to take time to admire and find beauty in the simplest of things. Nature speaks to us in many beautiful and intimate ways. I remind my children to admire, respect and be humble of our natural environment. To always remember, it is gift we should protect and constantly learn from. Funny how life comes full circle. I’m a firm believer that even if you don’t pursue your love at first, if it’s really there, it’s really true, it will come back to pursue you. It was never about art as a ‘job’... art is an intimate discovery of self and is different for everyone. For me, it’s a journey that binds me to nature and reminds me to be thankful for the beauty that surrounds us. Vasy Petros Be inspired

‘In all things of nature, there is something of the marvellous’ (Aristotle) A series of collages inspired by the natural coastal beauty of Victoria’s South Gippsland. What appears as simple, muted colour landscapes from a distance, is actually complex compositions of broken, shattered images. Each apparent ‘brushstroke’ is an intricate play of colour cut from unwanted magazines and newspapers, detached and fragmented. The attempt is to capture the simplicity of nature and evoke a sense of peace from material which is mass produced for our everyday use and so readily discarded. Mass print, representative of to-

day’s exploitation and complexity, is transformed into scenes that invite the soul, connect us with nature and momentarily transports us to a simple time and place....a tranquil reflection on still water, the peaceful break of dawn or a serene sunset.
