WELCOME HOME Tanya Griffin: Owner and Interior Designer, Shaping Spaces Interiors Q: What are the latest kitchen and dining area trends for the home? Tanya Griffin: Today’s homebuyers are looking for open kitchen and dining areas to make entertaining easy and free flowing. They are loving low maintenance kitchen finishes like quartz counters, glass backsplash and flat panel doors. Q: And which of these trends do you see picking up or dropping off for 2017? 100 | LOCALE MAGAZINE
TG: Although gold made a comeback at the end of 2016, it definitely is hot now—especially rose gold with a mix of wood tones giving the space a warm eclectic feel. Q: When buying a resale home, what’s the first thing you would do to create an optimal eating/living area? TG: When buying a home with an open-plan you’re often limited without the presence of walls. So, the first thing to
do is define your areas for the appropriate scale entertaining/ living area by adding a rug that not only anchors furniture that may be floating in the room, but defines it as well, by creating an unspoken separation from the dining that’s often in the same room or very close by. Q: How can homebuyers make a brand new home feel more “homey” without cluttering it up? TG: We love working with new
homebuyers—their excitement is contagious and we love their energy. Quick tips that we often give to add warmth to a new home is through accents and artwork. Nothing screams a new home that’s unsettled than bare walls. Adding color through accent pillows, area rugs, lamp shades and artwork are quick and easy fixes to warm up any space and start blending your existing furnishings with new.
