Welcome to the July/August issue of Spotlight Magazine! Summer is here! With the end of the school term, the Euros and the Olympics on the TV and some sunshine (at the time of going to press) it feels very much like summer is really here. Of course, we must remain vigilant and continue to stay safe to protect us from rising Covid-19 infections, but everyone is now hopefully starting to feel like life is returning to normal. I’ll make no predictions about how we progress into the autumn, let’s just enjoy the summer!

There’s a bumper crop of new advertisers in this issue too, reflecting the resurgence in the local economy as restrictions in place because of the pandemic are slowly eased. Say hello to The Little Home, Niddry Castle Golf Club, Rogue, The Queens B&B and Escape MediSpa. In addition to showcasing their products and services, many of these advertisers have great offers for Spotlight readers – check out details on their pages.

Spotlight continues to work with our community partners at Queensferry Parish Church, Rotary Club of South Queensferry and the Queensferry District and Community Council to bring you news of what is happening in the area. In this issue, it is delightful to also see The Ferry Fair Festival, Kirkliston Children’s Gala, and The 21st Craigalmond Scout Group represented. By working with community groups like these, Spotlight is able to highlight events and organisations that are important to the area and inform people about news and developments. If you run an organisation or charity that would benefit from being featured in Spotlight, just drop us a line at spotlight@wordsandpicturesUK.com and we’ll happily discuss your requirements.

A special mention to long term advertisers, The Hub Community & Sports Centre and The Little Parlour, both of whom have reasons to celebrate – I’ll leave you to read all about it on their respective pages! Finally, a Scottish legend and cultural icon makes an appearance in this issue, courtesy of Rev David Cameron. I don’t think I have ever had reason to quote Oor Wullie in anything I‘ve ever published so, in a career first, I shall sign off this issue with his customary, Jings, crivvens and help ma boab! Kirkliston Children’s Gala 2021

S

aturday 26th June saw the 2021 Kirkliston Children’s Gala take place at Conifox Adventure Centre for the second year running as organisers were once again forced to make changes to the programme because of Covid restrictions. A socially distanced audience of 500, all-seated, parents and family members watched as Gracious Lady, Agnes Rothney, crowned Queen Sofia Baird on stage. Also in attendance were many children from Kirkliston Primary School. This year the event was streamed live to those unable to attend in person by 21CC Group Ltd, enabling a larger audience than restrictions allowed in person. Prior to the ceremony, Queen-elect Sofia and her entourage, laid a wreath at the remembrance monument in Kirkliston Main Street. The weather was dry and the occasional glimpse of sun was reported by some members of the audience! After the ceremony, a range of entertainment and food & drink was enjoyed outdoors in the grounds of Conifox.

Jings, Crivvens an' Help ma Boab!

I

mmortal words from one of Scotland’s favourite cartoon characters – none other than Oor Wullie.

He will be my guide Hold me closely to His side With love and strength for each new day He will make a way, He will make a way By a roadway in the wilderness, He'll lead me And rivers in the desert will I see Heaven and Earth will fade but His Word will still remain And He will do something new today’

When my kids were wee I remember them sitting down together reading the latest annual of this wee Scottish legend. They were sounding out his ever-famous sayings, wrestling with the invitation for them to: ‘…take off your tacketty boots, pull up your bucket, sit on your bahookie and have a right good belly laugh as he gies it laldy.’ Not to mention the endless jeely pieces and getting involved in more than one stramash!

Time and again the words of this song come to my mind whenever I face my ‘Jings! Crivvens! An’ help ma boab!’ moments. Into the unexpected, insurmountable, uncharted moments in life, hope is suddenly born, and no, such a challenging moment doesn’t always vanish instantly - but into the mix and mayhem of the moment something new is present.

Listening to them reading it out I asked ‘have you any idea what he’s saying?’ ‘No idea!’ came the quick response, but they loved the words and seeing the pictures and were captivated by this wee guy.

This hope, that God is present, that he can make a way, that something new is possible now slowly begins to grow – hold on to it – nurture and feed it – protect it and care for it and, with the passing of time, the mountain before you quietly diminishes and the once foreboding prospects ahead seem to have shrunk.

Time and again, it seems to me, that Oor Wullie comes up with a phrase that captures one of life’s big moments,‘Jings! Crivvens! An’ help ma boab!’. We all have had - and will have - moments when suddenly we’re faced with a situation that comes out of the blue, the last thing we expected, and we have no idea how we’re going to face it, or overcome it.

Who would have thought 2000 years ago when a roving preacher, teacher and healer called Jesus found the religious and state authorities turning against him to such an extent that his life was sacrificed on a cross, who would have thought that 3 days later he would come back to life and trigger a worldwide movement of hope?

As we journey through this year which, for many if not all of us, has taken us to moments where Oor Wullie’s words fit the bill for what we’re feeling, the big question is: ‘where and what do we turn to when such moments come our way?’

Whatever mountain and moment you and yours are facing, may you, in your ‘Jings! Crivvens! & help ma boab!’ moments take the step of faith that ‘s called for and discover that God will make a way where there seems to be no way!

Singer songwriter Don Moen gave expression to where they might turn in his song: ‘God will make a way’: ‘God will make a way Where there seems to be no way He works in ways we cannot see He will make a way for me

Peace and blessings, Rev David Cameron 13

Ferry Fair is Back!

The ceremonies will be scaled back due to the ongoing need to respect social distancing guidelines and will take place at Covid-secure locations with the help of a local estate. Unfortunately, only close family members of the court participants will be able to attend. Nevertheless, a full court from both Echline and Queensferry Primary Schools will be formed and Queens-Elect Jessica and Grace will be crowned by Gracious Ladies, Ruth Bailey and Diane Job. For those who are unable to attend, please note the events will be live-streamed so you can watch from home (or a nearby beer garden?).

Queensferry Men Walk for Charity A total of 30 men from Queensferry took part in an amazing walkathon in support of Prostate Scotland, covering a total of 46 miles in 24 hours. Starting from the Forth Road Bridge, their route took them along the Fife Coastal Path before finishing in Pitenweem. The group only stopped briefly to sleep at 2am in Leven before continuing to their destination! Organiser, Craig Robertson, said, “We’ve been doing this for 6 years and previous adventures have included famous routes like The West Highland Way. Everyone who took part in the walk has been affected in some way by cancer - my dad has been living with Prostate Cancer for

23 years. Aged 70, he’s still going strong and still playing golf. These walks to raise funds for the charity that supports people like him were inspired by my hill walks with him 20 years ago”. Morag Idan, Communications & Supporter Care Officer from Prostate Scotland said, “We’d like to say a very big thank you to Craig, his friends, family and the community of South Queensferry for their continued support… This latest challenge raised the fantastic amount of £3,700”

Niddry Castle Golf Course

S

itting just off Winchburgh Main Street is Niddry Castle Golf Club. Expanded from its original 9-hole format in 2003 to its current 18-hole configuration, the club boasts a well-appointed clubhouse with bar and ample car park. Niddry Castle provides a stunning backdrop to much of the course and dominates the skyline from the moment you tee off on the 1st. The club is currently looking for new members as Ladies Captain, Anne Leslie, explains. “We’re a friendly bunch and we’re keen to welcome new members from a wide range of abilities, age groups and backgrounds to the club. We’ve noticed that the ladies’ membership numbers are lower than we’d like, and we’d love to see some new faces at the club.”

“We have a wide range of membership options from a very modest £50 for junior / juvenile membership to just £290 for full adult membership. There are large discounts for intermediate, country, weekday and senior memberships too”.

Anne and the rest of the committee are confident that new visitors will enjoy playing their course and are offering a generous £10 off a round of golf - using the attached voucher with the full fee refunded to anyone who subsequently joins the club.

Anyone who is interested in joining, playing or perhaps just paying the club a visit for a chance to speak with Anne or one of the other members should call 01506 891097, email enquiry@niddrycastlegolfclub.co.uk or www.niddrycastlegolfclub.co.uk for further details.

H

aving worked in the interior design industry for over 20 years, Andrea Tait is more than qualified to help you with designing your perfect home. To Andrea, design is not just a job, colour, pattern and texture are her passion. Andrea’s working career started whilst she was training at art college and worked for a local design firm before moving on to Laura Ashley. Whilst there, she gained invaluable knowledge before latterly working for one of Edinburgh’s top design studios. Most recently, Andrea has just started her own studio, The Little Home.

The Little Home

“I recognise that a home has to fit around the people that live in it. Having a busy family life myself (which includes a husband, 2 children and a hyperactive cocker spaniel!) I understand what it takes to adapt to all requirements when it comes to making a home a special place to be.”

Design won’t save the world but it damn sure makes it look good”

30

“My approach to design is friendly and relaxed and, as a result, most of my work comes through referral or from returning clients. My extensive experience in interior design and sourcing translates into ideas and solutions which reassures clients, avoids costly mistakes, and maximises space and budget. Working alongside a trusted network of fitters, suppliers and tradespeople allows for seamless project management and client care.” So how can Andrea help you? “I understand that every client needs something different, so I prefer to meet in your own surroundings for an initial chat to see what service best suits your needs. I then tailor a package for you. This can be anything from a simple colour consultation to a full design service. Choosing the design package that is right for you and working closely together, we will create your ideal space using a combination of mood, colour and inspirational boards as visual explanations of the look and feel I suggest.”

“I also offer a style and accessorise service if you are selling your home to help maximise viewers and sales. For those that have already done the hard work and require some final input pulling the whole look of your home together with clever lighting and accessorising I would be delighted to help.” All successful projects are based on good relationships – contact Andrea and find out how she can help by calling 07810 715 036 or sending an email to andrea@thelittlehome.co.uk

“From full project management of your design to co-ordinating and working closely with trades, I tailor my services around your needs and budget. Sourcing key items and putting them together as part of a cohesive design presentation, I use various swatches and samples to illustrate the best look and feel.”

The group is appealing to all members of the community who may have links, past or present, to Scouting in this area. Was your great-grandfather a Scout here? Do you have any photographs or memories you can share? Perhaps you used to attend before the Scouts moved to their current home?

The Scouts are hoping to put together an exhibition to commemorate this milestone with all the material they receive. They hope also to put on an event too and look forward to welcoming past members. If you think you can help, please contact 100years@SQScouts.org

Queensferry District & Community Council Q SfP. At time of writing we await these changes and the safety audit results.

DCC has continued operating remotely throughout the pandemic, using various online tools. Monthly meetings are held on the evening of the fourth Monday of every month except December, open to the public and are currently conducted using MS Teams video conferencing. Anyone wishing to join the meeting or to raise any points should email us through our website: http://www.queensferrycommunitycouncil.co.uk/

Local policing: We met with NW Edinburgh Chief Inspector Sarah Taylor in June to discuss a number of issues. Late night and other traffic behaviour, 101 response, local officers presence and general communication. Police are aware of all the issues and moves are being made to address them. Community policing budget has been cut significantly and officers and staff are no less vulnerable to Covid isolation requirements than anyone else, putting additional pressure on the service. However, despite this, actions are being taken to increase presence effectively in the area. Please continue to report incidents using 999 (emergency), 101 (non-emergency), the online Police Scotland contact form or email the local team at EdinburghCPTnorthwest@scotland.pnn. police.uk

Planning: No major change since last Spotlight update, major housing developments in construction at South Scotstoun and Ferrymuir; two more in the pipeline at Springfield and Builyeon Rd (mixed use) subject to approval, and Scotstoun House (Arup site) is being considered for housing. Details of those and other developments available in our monthly newsletters on our website. The next phase of developments under City plan 2030 is due before the council in the autumn.

Education & Recreation: Great to see the new QHS Leisure facilities (pool, gym, badminton) open over the summer school holidays. Please make full use to demonstrate demand, this will support us in negotiating for more facilities but equally hinder us if underused. Book through https:// www.edinburghleisure.co.uk/venues/ queensferry-high-sports-complex

Transport: The Spaces for People project was subject to a safety audit in June including impact on other areas such as Rosshill Terr, Station Rd and The Loan. Concerns have been expressed by some residents over the volume and behaviour of some traffic along Station Rd and elsewhere. A few interim alterations to informational and directional signage have been put forward by QDCC along with local police officers and agreed by 40

Environment: Thanks to CEC for the repairs to Jacob’s Ladder and for supply of a number of plants which Friends of Ferryglen, GreenFerry & CleanFerry have planted in the High St and around the town.

Finally, congratulations to two of our community councillors, Diane Job and Anne Mitchell who, along with well deserved others, received Rotary Club Awards for services to the community, both well earned and great to see their invaluable, selfless work for the community acknowledged.

Queensferry Harbour Update It has been relatively quiet around the harbour, quiet in the sense of boat activity however we continue to see, and welcome, the many visitors who stroll around the harbour walls every day. All the Queensferry Boat Club (QBC) and other boats are back on their moorings. There are a few gaps where some of our boats are away visiting other harbours and lochs but basically we are up to speed for the sailing season. Sailing is fine sport and it can be entertaining for spectators watching hobby sailors at work especially if they misjudge the time of low water and arrive too early or too late to moor up. There has been no recent action on the planned repair work and finding out the status of the work is proving to be problematic. The main concern of the QBC and our Community Council (QDCC) is for the safety of people in and around our harbour, this is and always was our paramount consideration. The remedial repair work is a vital component to ensure that the harbour is as safe a place as possible, meanwhile I would like to remind everyone to take great care around the harbour area. A wee note for the kids: If you see a pirate flag flying from a boat mast don’t worry, we are not “real” pirates. (yo ho!) Muir Kay, QBC Commodore

Welcome to The Queens C ontemporary, stylish, delicious The Queens is a boutique Bed and Breakfast experience that fuses the best of Australian and Scottish hospitality. And the owner Angela and her wife Judith would have it no other way.

Gothic villa in the centre of historic South Queensferry back to bare plaster, only to be reimagined in breath-taking décor that is both warm and inviting. The four bedrooms - two kings/twins, one double and one single – are all named after famous Queens. From Queen Margaret (ironically a king or twin) who gave South Queensferry its name, to Mary, Queen of Scots, a rare single room that is afforded no less luxury.

Just stepping inside The Queens tells you they’ve left nothing to chance. The recent refurbishment was a complete bricks-and-mortar renovation that stripped this impressive 19th century
