There’s something New & Exciting at Holme Grange

by Jacqui Priestley

I am a regular visitor to Holme Grange craft village and for many years it has been the mainstay of family days out with its eclectic range of shops, everything from a ladies’ boutique, bespoke jewellers, aquatic equipment, art gallery, dog groomers and much more.

There are artisan crafts, workshops and places of entertainment for children - young and old! Brickies Lego is as popular as ever, Pottery Pals and Sewisfaction have unique parties for all kinds of celebrations. Enchanting Glass Designs have the most amazing glass studio and courses for all levels of experience and next door there is a delightful Chocolate Café, serving excellent breakfasts, lunches and snacks 7 days a week.

But, we promised you something new and exciting...a short time ago, the air in the village was filled with the aroma of baking as it wafts from A Dust of Flour & Sugar bakery, a warm, inviting scent of fresh bread, sweet pastries, and rich, buttery croissants. It mingles in the air, evoking comfort and nostalgia, enticing passerby with promises of delicious, homemade goodness. What a delightful addition?

Also, more recently saw the arrival of Catherine Taylor Hair & Beauty and Catherine Taylor Pamper Parties, including Princess Parties which are perfect for younger birthday girls, with lots of sparkles and fun! Suitable for those aged 3–8 years.

Their original Spa party is ideal for those wanting the full pamper experience, for ages 4–11 years, and Pre-Teen parties which offer a slightly more grown up feel for those little ladies aged 10–13 years.

Then, for children of all ages - and yes, that is from age 6 to 66 years old...ask yourself - are you a fan of Pokémon, Lorcana, or One Piece?

Or are you a “Pokémon Trainer,” “Pokémon Master,” or “Pokéfan.” (These terms affectionately describe enthusiasts deeply knowledgeable about Pokémon games, cards, and lore, it would seem! I have been doing my research.)

Well, Elemental Cards is opening its doors this June at the craft village, where they will be offering all the trading cards, workshops and merchandise you need to immerse yourself in your favourite hobby.

How exciting does all that sound? Hurry down to the craft village and grab a piece of the action this Summer!

Enjoy, all that is new and exciting.

Jacqui Priestley spends five minutes with Jonathan Becker of Becker Bespoke Tailoring

When and how did you become a bespoke tailor?

I became a bespoke tailor in 1983 enrolling in a Youth Training Scheme run by the government of the time and in conjunction with The City and Guilds Bespoke Tailoring Course at The London College of Fashion ‘graduating’ in 1986. During this time I worked as an apprentice coat maker for Wells of Savile Row until 1985 moving to the City to learn cutting and fitting.

When did you know you wanted to become a business owner and entrepreneur?

I realised that I wanted to be a business owner/ entrepreneur in 1985.

What motivates you?

My motivation is creating something from a set of measurements and seeing the clients delight in receiving a beautifully made and fitted garment.

I know that you are a modest man Jonathan but you are quite famous yourself, and you have many celebrity clients and friends, don’t you?

I wouldn’t say I was famous, maybe quite well known throughout my trade. I have had the good fortune to work for several very well known clients with whom I have a very friendly rapport with but every Becker Bespoke client is treated exactly the same whether they are in the public eye, have a title before their name, letters after their name or not.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

My biggest inspiration is my former mentor at Couch & Hoskin, Derek Hodges. His patience in teaching me and his knowledge he passed onto me will always be something I will always be truly grateful for.

“Feels like embodying elegance and luxury in every step”

From fully bespoke to made-to-measure garments for all occasions and events.

You were nominated for a prestigious award recently, which you won! Tell us a little about that?

I was nominated for the Merchant Taylor’s Master Taylor Award this February in recognition of my contribution to the trade which was an unexpected honour and exceedingly humbling. I received my award from the Lord Mayor of The City of London and the Master of The Taylor’s Guild at a ceremony at Mansion House.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

Difficult to choose what is the best piece of advice I’ve been given, Treat people how you would wish to be treated or Life is not a dress rehearsal, you are only here once.

What do you like best about Wokingham?

What I like best about Wokingham is the town hall, such a beautiful building that always reminds me of moving here in 1974.

What do you do to relax?

To relax I like Hill Walking in Snowdonia, gardening and DIY.

What is your future ambition?

My future ambition is to be able to retire young and fit enough to enjoy it.

It was lovely to speak with you today Jonathan, as always, myself and all the team at Local Area Magazines wish you all the very best for the future.
