IWM NORTH

Since opening on 5 July 2002, IWM North has welcomed over 4 million visitors. It is the fifth branch of the national Imperial War Museums and the first outside SE England. IWM North tackles themes of war and conflict in innovative ways, using the sound, photography and film archives of IWM to great effect. It was the first building in the UK to be designed by Daniel Libeskind, the internationally renowned architect of the Jewish Museum, Berlin, and the masterplan for Ground Zero, New York. The Museum’s three interlocking shards are fragments of a shattered globe that signify conflict on land, water and in the air. IWM North is also a museum for the people of Manchester. The site that IWM North stands on today is where the Hovis Grain Silos once stood before they were bombed and burnt down in the Manchester Blitz during the Second World War. Objects unique to Manchester, such as a Manchester Blitz Fire Fighting Trailer Pump, are on display. The Big Picture Show “Mightier Than War” combines the powerful poetry of Mancunian Tony Walsh with poignant imagery from our collection.
