Masterchef

moment L

ike many of you I’m sure, I’ve become an avid viewer of the BBC Masterchef, marvelling at the entrants’ creativity and cringing at the pressures they face in the TV studios. It’s fascinating to hear about how they managed to get onto Masterchef, but whatever their respective journeys, they have two things in common; bravery and an unshakeable belief in themselves. I had my own Masterchef moment recently when, at a weekly community event, our two first choice chefs were unavailable at late notice and I had to step up, prep and cook 50 or so breakfasts in the space of a couple of hours. It went like a dream and the feeling afterwards was, I can only imagine, equal to scoring a goal in a cup final. The truth is though; it wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be. In fact, we’re down two chefs on Saturday only, this time, I won’t be losing any sleep on Friday night. Isn’t that often the case that the thought of fear itself is greater than what it is we fear? Many of our young people are facing their own Masterchef moments in the next few weeks, sitting examinations of one kind or another, and many of them will currently, just like my daughter, be in a state of panic. I’ve told her to be brave, prepare thoroughly and believe in herself and hopefully it will make a difference. Maybe it will make a difference for your children too? Fingers crossed,

Tall tales Do you love to tell a good story? Well if you have the urge to put pen to paper, then why not write a tale for the Prescot Festival? The short story competition is free and entry is open to non-professional writers of all ages living in the Merseyside area. This year marks the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, so the theme of the competition is, ‘in a pickle’, a common English phrase that the Bard coined in his play ‘The Tempest’. The closing date for the competition is Friday May 27 and all entries must be sent to Prescot Festival Short Competition, 12 Earle Avenue, Roby, L36 4JP. The Junction Pub in Rainford will be celebrating all things Jedi, with their Star Wars themed beer Festival on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 May. rocket seeds that have spent several months in microgravity, alongside seeds that haven’t been to space to see if there is much of a difference. The out-of-this-world project will also enable pupils to think about the preservation of human life on other planets in the future, what astronauts need to survive long-term missions in space and the difficulties surrounding growing fresh food in challenging climates. Head teacher, Melanie Ravenscroft, said, “We are very excited to be taking part in Rocket Science, this experiment is a fantastic way of teaching our pupils to think more scientifically and share their findings with the whole country. “It also gives the students a chance to show their excellent gardening skills and help further scientific discoveries.”

Cleaning up in

Garswood

Garswoodians turned out in force to wave farewell to their long serving street cleaner.

taken over by St Helens in 1974, I moved to that council” said John, “ I worked for them in Billinge, Haresfinch and Newton-le-Willows before moving into Garswood 19 years ago”. John added “Garswood people are lovely, they have really looked after me over the years and I can’t believe that they have raised so much money for me”. The campaign to raise money for John’s send-off was instigated by Jim Stephenson, the ex-chairman of the Parish Council. “The idea was floated on Garswoodians Facebook page, and it grew from there. We placed a few collection tins around the village with John’s picture on them and it took just two weeks to raise the money.” Jim went on, “The problem was that John actually uses the shops where the collection tins were placed, so the staff had to keep hiding the tins when John walked in!” So what is John going to spend the money on?

John Cunliffe, of London Fields in Billinge, hung up his broom after spending the last 46 years clearing litter from the streets of St Helens, most of them on the streets of Garswood and Billinge. And in an amazing act of generosity, the people of Garswood collected a staggering £1,015 which they presented to him at a presentation recently outside Garswood Primary School on Hamilton Road. Over 40 local residents turned out to wish John a happy retirement, many of whom came bearing cards and gifts for John who was clearly overwhelmed with the turn out on the night. After the presentation, he attended a Seneley Green Parish Council meeting where he was awarded a certificate and a gift thanking him for his efforts over the years. “I started work on the 6th April 1970 for Billinge (and Winstanley Urban) Council, and when that was

“I’m going to put in in the bank and leave it where it is, I’m not going to spend it just yet” said John, who intends to spend more time in his garden now that he has retired. “I’ll keep coming back to see the people of Garswood though, they really look after me”.

Design a

garden

Southport Flower Show is on the hunt for the next generation of gardening talent to compete in their 2016 design competition, and local primary schools throughout the North West are invited to design a garden that will be part of the prestigious show.

Ray Roukin, general manager at Southport Flower Show, said: “The competition is a great opportunity for children to let their imaginations run wild and come up with a garden which sums up what the word Mediterranean means to them. The two winners will have their designs turned into real gardens, to be viewed by the thousands of visitors to the show. We will also give the winning schools £500 to enhance their own school grounds.”

With the generous sponsorship of the West Lancashire Freemasons’ Charity, this year school children in the region are being set the challenge of designing an eco-friendly, Mediterranean themed garden in the ’Schools Design-a-Garden Competition’. The competition is open to children in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 and entries from all primary schools are welcome.

A team of judges will sift through the designs sent into the show and two winners, together with 10 runners-up, will be chosen. Their garden designs will be built by Myerscough College’s work-based apprentices in time for this year’s show, which runs from 18th - 21st August. The winners, their families and teachers, will be

27

invited to the show and will be presented with their prizes by sponsors and guests. The 10 runners up, with families and teachers, will also be invited to the show to receive their prizes. The picture illustrates one of the winning gardens

from last year, the design of Jessica Smith, from Holmeswood Methodist School. To find out more visit www.southportflowershow.co.uk and download an entry form, closing date for entries is Friday 10th June 2016.

Nursery celebrations in

Crank

T

he quaint building that stands at the top of Crank Hill has a long history firmly rooted in the community, particularly that of local children.. In 1860 the building was in use as a school and at the time Ellen Birchall from Crank was the school mistress.

Crank Day Nursery was born. Nursery manager, Joan Norton opened the doors in September 1990, caring for just one child on her first day and she is still there 25 years later helping to care for up to 100 children. The building has always had family orientations and on March 23 1874, Ellen’s daughter Emma was enrolled on the register to attend school at the age of 4 years and 7 months. In 1881 records show that the family also resided at the schoolhouse and 10 years after that it was Emma that had become the school teacher in place of her mother. The building remained the village school until it closed in 1990, due to low numbers – the landlord at the time wanted the building to remain as an educational establishment. So, with the help of the Government’s employment training scheme,

The Nursery hit a bit of a setback in 1991 when the Government employment training scheme was

29

withdrawn. Joan and the rest of the staff found themselves at a bit of a crossroads, how did they keep the nursery open without any funding? The team decided to soldier on and keep the nursery going as a selfsupporting, non-profit organisation and soon the nursery became a fully-fledged charity. The children’s fees funded the nursery and extra fund raising events, such as the balloon race pictured, were held to boost the coffers when new equipment was needed. The exterior of the original building has been modernised over the years and the interior has been modernised and adapted as the needs and numbers of the children have changed. So much so that the current setting now offers full and part-time care for 100 registered children aged three-months to five-years. The success of the Crank Day Nursery team means that they are at full capacity and already taking bookings for 2017. Nursery Manager, Joan told Local Life, “The nursery’s main goal is to provide a happy, safe and caring environment for our children. “We have more than 30 members of long serving staff, and for me that is the key to our achievement. Joan continued, “We have a board of management that meet regularly, Mrs Beryl Brighouse is the chairman and the nursery is inspected and Ofsted rated. “We feel strongly that the children are welcomed into a family environment and nothing proves this more than having parents return with their own children. Generations keep coming back

to us and there is no bigger testimonial than that.” The staff and children at Crank Day Nursery are gearing up for their 25th anniversary celebrations and they can’t wait to see you all. Here’s to the next 25 years!

25th anniversary Come along and help us celebrate our 25th anniversary on Saturday May 21 from 1pm-4pm. This is a free event for everyone to enjoy – the nursery would like to hear from past and present children, parents and staff. On the day there will be complimentary food and drinks, music and face painting. Why not bring your own picnic and make an afternoon of it! For more information please contact the Nursery on 01744 886166 or email cranknurseryltd@btconnect.com

Ignoring bowel

cancer?

T

By Lisa Salmon

he British are notoriously private and prone to embarrassment when it comes to bodily functions, particularly those ‘down there’ which may go some way to explaining why up to two-thirds of eligible people aren’t taking part in bowel cancer screening. Despite having been introduced 10 years ago in some areas of the UK - and the fact the programme could save over 2,000 lives a year by 2025 - less than half the people offered the home tests aren’t completing them. In some communities, uptake is as low as a third, and men, as well as people in deprived and ethnic minority communities, are the least likely to take part. April’s Bowel Cancer Awareness is aiming to change this, in a bid to help more people detect changes early - which means better outcomes, higher survival rates and even the chance to stop cancer from developing.

A common cancer More than 41,500 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer, and around 16,000 people die from it every year, making it the UK’s second biggest cancer killer. However, if it’s caught early, many survive - in fact, there’s a 98% five-year survival rate for those diagnosed at the earliest stage, and by far the best way of catching bowel cancer early is through screening. “Bowel cancer is one of the most treatable cancers,” stresses Gail Curry, head of health promotion at Bowel Cancer UK. “Screening saves lives by catching it at it’s earliest stage - when it’s most treatable.”

What’s in a test? Bowel cancer screening tests, called faecal occult blood tests (FOB), are sent out every two years to people aged 60-74 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and to those aged 50-74 in Scotland. Recipients are required to collect and send back (in the pre-paid envelope provided) three small bowel motion samples - there are instructions detailing exactly how to do this - which are then analysed in a laboratory for traces of blood. If blood (which can be an early sign of bowel cancer) is detected, there will be further tests. However, even if something does show up, it doesn’t always mean it’ll turn out to be cancer. “Evidence shows that one of the main reasons for people not doing the test is that they think there’s nothing wrong with them, and they have no connection to bowel cancer. But the test is designed

to diagnose any problems before symptoms arise, so just like cervical and breast screening, it’s a prevention method,” says Curry. The screening can even prevent bowel cancer from developing in the first place, by picking up non-cancerous growths (polyps) which could become cancerous in the future.

Easy business The idea of collecting a stool sample can be off-putting for some, but Curry urges everybody not to be embarrassed. “A lot of us have children or pets and have had to deal with their poo, so you shouldn’t be afraid of doing the test on yourself. People aren’t asked to touch it with their hands and it’s very straightforward,” she adds. “It’s done in the privacy of your own home, it’s not painful - and doing it is a lot better than getting bowel cancer.”

Who gets bowel cancer? Age is a major risk factor for bowel cancer, with nearly three-quarters (72%) of people diagnosed with the disease aged 65 and over. However, the number of young people developing this form of cancer is rising, so symptoms should always be addressed with your GP if concerned. A strong family history of bowel cancer is also linked to developing the disease. It’s believed that up to a third of cases may be caused by a change or fault in one or more genes, although it’s usually not known which genes are involved. People with a history of chronic inflammatory bowel problems, including Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, or polyps (growths on the bowel lining) and type 2 diabetes, may be at higher risk too. “The majority of bowel cancers start from polyps but not all polyps turn into cancer,” stresses Curry. “They’re very common and mostly nothing to worry about, but if they get large, the risk of them becoming cancer is higher.”

Hands on Healing

Lifestyle factors can also increase the risk of bowel cancer, with smoking, drinking alcohol, eating an unhealthy diet and obesity all linked to the disease.

Spot the signs These symptoms don’t always indicate cancer, but it’s best to get them checked without delay, to be on the safe side... • Bleeding from the bottom and/or blood in your poo. • A change in normal bowel habits lasting three weeks or more, especially to looser or runny poo. • Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason. • Unexplained weight loss. • A pain or lump in the tummy. Curry says: “People can be afraid or embarrassed if they have blood in their poo, or another symptom ‘down there’, but doctors see these symptoms all the time. If anyone has any symptoms, they shouldn’t wait for the test kit to arrive, but go straight to their GP.” For more information, visit bowelcanceruk.org.uk

he Greek Islands are like snowflakes, every single one is different. And though there are more than 6,000 of them, just 80 have a population over 100, and only 20 islands have substantial numbers of tourists. So no Greek Islands holiday is the same, and every year travel operators ‘discover’ new places to stay, which is great for us Grecophiles. Relatively few Greek Islands have been affected by the migrant crisis gripping southern Europe, and these islands are all close to the Turkish border. Confidence in Greek tourism remains high and in 2015, 2.3 million of us Brits headed for Greece, an increase of 14.7% on 2014. Better placed than most operators to discover the Greek Islands is Olympic Holidays, who specialise in holidays to Greece, the Greek Islands and Cyprus. For 2016, Olympic unveil a new ‘Twin Centre’ option for those tourists who like to sample different styles of holidays, so here’s a few of those less well-known islands for you to consider this summer.

Ionian Islands Just east of Kefalonia you’ll find Ithaca. Here you’ll find a rich culture and a timeless feel. Ithaca remains unspoiled by the modern world and clear blue seas and lush green valleys and mountains are home to one of the most friendly communities in Greece. Ithaca has something for everyone, including great beaches, hikes, boating trips, scuba diving, traditional food and entertainment or quiet solitude. Large bays and blustery winds attract droves of sailors and windsurfers to Lefkada. The island has plenty more to recommend it, from its glorious beaches to its sleepy interior - the gorgeous former capital of Karya is a particular highlight.

Cyclades Islands Tinos, north of Mykonos, is a sleepy island known widely for its marble sculptures and its sacred Greek Orthodox pilgrimage site: the Church of

Panagia Evangelistria. But as soon as you leave the main town behind, you’ll discover a wonderland of natural beauty, with many villages found in hidden bays and on terraced hillsides. The food, made from local produce (cheeses, sausage, tomatoes and wild artichokes), is some of the best you’ll find in Greece. Delos, which according to mythology is the birthplace of Apollo. The entire island - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - consists of ruins, including temples, statues, mosaics and a theatre. You can’t stay on the island; visitors arrive by boat from nearby Mykonos.

Sporades Islands Located between the islands of Skiathos and Alonissos, the island of Skopelos will be instantly recognisable to those fans of the hit movie ‘Mamma Mia’, which features many location shots on the island. 80% of this hilly island is cloaked in pine trees whilst the remainder of the island is homes to several sleepy resorts and also olive and plum groves. Blessed with rugged natural landscapes, Alonissos is an island ideal for those who want to unwind and enjoy leisure walks surrounded by pine forests, olive groves and orchards. The island plays host to the National Marine Park of Northern Sporades, a refuge for rare seabirds, dolphins and the Mediterranean monk seals.

Milos Milos lies to the north of Crete and is known as the ‘Island of Colours’ thanks to its splendid, manifold beauties of volcanic origin. There are more than 70

is to negotiate with the other party and try to break down the disagreements and reach a fair result”.

Local law firm I E Legal Solicitors have a team of caring, expert solicitors who are there for you, to advise and help you resolve any legal disputes. Whether it is your ex being unreasonable about the arrangements with the kids, or an argument over property or money, I E Legal’s experienced team can help.

“Because legal aid is no longer available in most cases, we are able to offer a range of services to help with family law. We emphasise working as quickly as possible and doing our best to get matters resolved fairly and for the lowest cost” said Dominic. “But sometimes an ex-partner simply won’t see sense” he explained, “and in that case, a settlement may not be possible. As a court representative, I am well used to having to tell judges that the other side is in fact lying to the court, or to CAFCASS or trying to manipulate the situation. And if the matter needs to go to a fully contested hearing, I will be there to represent my clients and guide them through the process – and get the best result”.

Resolving difficult disagreements is one of the things that Dominic Cooper, senior solicitor at I E Legal, deals with regularly. “In many cases, ex-partners are still angry and bitter about issues from the relationship, and this can cloud judgment” explained Dominic. “We often find that the real issues – such as who gets what from the house, who will live where, how the children will spend time with their parents – these are not very disputed. But nobody reaches agreement about these important things, because of arguments over other matters. Part of my job Dominic Cooper

But if that doesn’t work, and the other party refuses to behave reasonably or reach an agreement, the Family Court can be asked to step in.

Raving about Rainford

Rangers

W

e have all spent a rainy Sunday afternoon on the touchline of a football pitch watching our kids play football and wishing we were somewhere else. But for those who think children’s football is the same as it was 30 years ago, should take themselves along to a Rainford Rangers game to see just how professional and enjoyable local football can be. Gone are the days of heavy balls and oranges at half time - Rainford Rangers has come a long way since they set up back in 1975 and they are currently in a league of their own. Members of the club have certainly got a reason to party as they reach a rather impressive milestone of four decades of grass roots football this year. From very humble beginnings when teams had to beg, steal and borrow a pitch every game, the club’s luck turned a corner when in 2011, with the help of exChairman Graham Fenney, they moved to the Jubilee Recreation Ground on Church Road. The club’s vital statistics are pretty impressive; 28 teams, more than 400 local children aged between 4-17 years-of-age playing every weekend,

43

50 coaches and a team of award-winning ground staff. This all adds up to a winning formula and the club’s silverware cabinets speak for themselves. In recent years the club has celebrated becoming an FA Charter Standard Club and a Nike Partner Club – accolades that really are the culmination of hard work and dedication. Chairman of the club, Andrew Ashcroft told Local Life, “Rainford Rangers has always been well-known in the local community for it’s great reputation for excellent football and we have plenty of success stories to share.”

three teams playing on a weekly basis and the girls are really being taken seriously. Most recently the under 9’s team progressed to the cup final in their very first season!’ Along with the addition of girls football, Rainford Rangers’ success can also be attributed to the targeted training of goalkeepers - proving that it’s not just about scoring goals, it’s about saving them too! With the introduction of a goalkeeper specific training programme the standard of the goalkeepers is also reaching new heights – ensuring that the last line of defence in a Rangers match, is watertight. The club has certainly proved over the years that it is top of the league when it comes to passion, dedication and hard work. So put those thoughts of old school football to the back of your mind, get out and support your local team and take in a bit of first-class football whilst you’re at it. For more details about the club visit www. rainfordrangers.com

Success for the club comes in many forms but more noticeably was past player Conor Coady, who after leaving the Rainford Rangers, went on to sign for Championship side Wolverhampton Wonderers.

Andrew added: “And’s it’s not just the boys’ teams that are at the top of their game; the girls are starting to make waves as well. Since 2013, we have

uilt is something many mums suffer immensely from.

In today’s busy world, it’s so hard to find time to do everything you should for your kids including cooking from scratch. And it’s so easy to reach for the fish fingers and waffles and give little ones a lunch you know they’ll love. But with even a tiny bit of time, you’ll be amazed at what you can whip up in the kitchen. To prove the point, Annabel Karmel has unveiled her latest batch of recipes, splashed deliciously across 220 pages in her new book. There are quick recipes, ingredients-based ideas, dishes for entertaining - from pasta bakes, to cakes and steaks - there’s pretty much everything you could ever need to feed a family at any age. But the difference with this latest release - The Busy Mum’s Cookbook - is that you really don’t need hours on end to cook up these delicious storms. So there are the 20-minute recipes for people (like me) who don’t have the time (or inclination) to cook. Just the other week, I was cursing for agreeing to ‘do’ dinner the evening before a 10k race (something else to try and squeeze in and feel guilty about), because I wanted a pasta dish that wasn’t too heavy. By the time the kids had gone to bed, all I wanted to do was slump in front of the telly and watch The Voice. So what did I do? I turned to page 44 and whipped up Karmel’s Mushroom And Broccoli Pasta in about 20 minutes flat.

There are oodles of quick and easy dinner ideas to get kids excited - the Sweet Potato Curls (though, granted, mine looked NOTHING like the ones in the picture!) make a brilliant alternative to chips, the Frittata With Cherry Tomatoes is “the best frittata in the whole wide world”, according to my three and six-year-old, and the Apricot, Pecan, Raisin And Chocolate Cookies are easy for little hands to make - and taste so good, you’ll struggle to keep away from the biscuit tin. Feeling inspired? Try the easy Annabel Karmel recipe for size... see page 46.

Annabel Karmel’s Busy Mum’s Cookbook is published by Ebury Press, priced £20.

Method Preheat the oven to 200C/Gas 6 and grease a baking tin.

Makes 14 goujons Ingredients 2 large skinless chicken breasts 7 slices Parma ham 2tsp runny honey For the sauce: 200g creme fraiche 2tbsp fresh green pesto Squeeze of lemon juice Salt and black pepper

Place the chicken breasts on a board. Cover them with cling film, then bash them with a rolling pin until they are slightly thinner. Drizzle over the honey, then roast for 10 minutes, until cooked through and crisp. Mix together the creme fraiche, pesto and lemon juice and season. his walk is of about 4.5 miles with a difference in elevation of 320ft; most of the climbing being on the second half of the walk.

Take this lane and follow it until it turns to the right, where you leave the lane to continue straight on along a surfaced path.

We start the walk from the pay and display car park at Haigh Hall Country Park, from where we head east along Copperas Lane past the gothic cottages, towards the village of Haigh. After about a 1/4 mile you’ll notice Haigh coming into view ahead of you. Continue all the way up the road until you reach the main road at Haigh.

Where the path takes a sharp turn to the right, you need to go left, through the metal gate and then right into the field. This section was very muddy when we did the walk. Your aim here is to keep to the right and find the path close to the fence line, but you may need to go out into the field first to avoid the mud as we did.

Here you will find a narrow lane to your right, that runs down the side of the Parish Church of St David.

The path is an old rail bed and you follow it first going under a road bridge and continuing on,

At the bottom of the roughly stepped path you go right and head down this road to where it joins the main driveway that runs from Wigan Lane up to Haigh Hall. Here you go right again walking up a short climb heading towards the Hall. At the top of the climb take the rough surfaced road on your left just before the bridge over the old railway cutting. Follow this road down over the small stream and up round to the left. As the road starts to go downhill again you’ll notice a stone marked with the words Wigan Way. The stone stands at the bottom of a path that leads up through the trees. Take this path to where it emerges by the side of the Alms Houses, from where you then follow the unsurfaced single track road out onto Hall Lane. Here you turn to your right and walk along the lane until you pass a line of laurel bushes on your left, at which point you’ll find a gate and public footpath.

Turning right you walk along School Lane, taking in the view on your left towards Blackrod and the hills beyond, before reaching the car park from where you started out. If at this point you’re in need of some refreshment you’ll find a café in the old stables, just inside the park. Other attractions include a huge children’s play area, miniature railway and more.

Go around the gate and follow the track until you reach the path on the right. Taking this path leads you through Lady Mabel’s Wood (a Woodland Trust site) and on up to the Leeds & Liverpool canal. At the canal turn to your left and follow the towpath, taking in the views along the way, until you reach the bridge (number 61) where you leave the canal and go over the bridge to climb Sennicar Lane. If you are bringing the kids along then make sure you pop over to the ‘kids’ corner’ for circus workshops, food themed activities and much more. The Corrs!

n Evening At The Races and Haydock Park Racecourse will welcome The Corrs as the first act to their 2016 summer season of open-air live concerts at Haydock Park Racecourse. Last year, over 40,000 fans descended onto the hallowed turf at Haydock Park to see show-stopping headlining performances from Kylie, Madness and Kaiser Chiefs after a day of racing. Since releasing their album ‘Forgiven, Not Forgotten’ in 1996, The Corrs have gone on to sell over 30 million albums worldwide. Known for hits including ‘Runaway’ and ‘Breathless’, the band took a 10-year break to spend time with their families while Sharon and Andrea also pursued solo careers. They returned last year to a rapturous welcome, with their album ‘White Light’ going straight into the UK charts at #11 and saw the band catapulted back into the touring circuit with a sold-out arena tour.

The Corrs told Local Life ‘We love open-air summer shows, so are really looking forward to playing Haydock Park on 18th June after the races. #

We’ve got hold of four tickets to this concert at Haydock Park on Saturday 18th June , so two lucky Local Life readers and their guests will be part of the sell-out crowd on what’s sure to be a night to remember. Whispering

grass... by Angie Barker

Award Winner

I

If you are thinking now about your summer borders and feel there is something missing – it might be that you need to include some grasses in your planting scheme. May is a really good month for planting grasses as most of them prefer to be moved when they are actively in growth. They are brilliant plants for bringing movement to a garden and they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. A word of caution though, some grasses spread by underground runners (Elymus arenarius ‘Blue Dune’ or Lyme Grass is one) which can soon take over your border so unless you have a garden the size of Tatton Park (oh I wish!) stick to clump formers. Here are some of my favourites: Stipa tenuissima – this is lovely because it is very soft and tactile and moves in the slightest of breezes. It looks brilliant with bright coloured perennials like Geums. (This one will self seed but the seedlings are easily removed – and you get new plants for free!) Miscanthus sinensis ‘Zebrinus’- this gets tall around 2m (6 feet in old money) and is upright – perfect for a skinny border in sun

Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.

Miscanthus sinensis. ‘Kleine Fontane’- has gorgeous pinky purple seed heads in August and stands up well all through winter. Looks wonderful when winter sun hits the frosted seed heads Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ - I love this one because it looks stunning planted with Acers, it has a graceful arching form and re-emerges each spring with fresh green growth Carex oshimensis hachijoensis ‘Evergold’ - quite a mouthful I know but a good grass for shade and is evergreen and very low maintenance - looks effective planted as a group Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue’ – a tufty, evergreen grass blue grey in colour so makes a brilliant contrast with darker leaved plants such as Heuchera If you would like to see some grasses in a garden setting then please come along to have a look at my garden on Sunday, 26th June, open from 11am to 4pm with admission of £3.50 going to cancer charities. You can have a look at Hubby too – evergreen with lovely movement!
