Breezing Into the Yoga Business Breezy Osborne-Wingfield continues to discover her true self through yoga practice and now owns a business that allows her to help others do the same. By Charlette Beasley | Photographs Courtesy of Barefoot Studio

O

pening a yoga studio was a dream of Breezy Osborne-Wingfield’s for quite some time before finally manifesting itself into Barefoot Studio. Before the vision however, it was mere fate waiting to unfold as a beautiful light at the end of a tunnel full of challenges and self-discovery. During most of Breezy’s childhood and teen years, she was overweight. This presented her with a sea of obstacles, both mental and physical, in addition to those that children inevitably face over the years. In 1999, around the age of eighteen or nineteen, she reached a pivotal point in her life: She was introduced to yoga for the first time. Enjoying what it had to offer, she continued to practice throughout some of her free time. What she discovered was that her yoga sessions proved to be of great value to her body and psyche as a whole. “What yoga taught me was, when I stepped on that mat, I was able to do exactly what was available as possible to me. I might’ve challenged myself, but I always listened to my body, because your body is always going to be honest with you first. And I thought, if I take care of myself on the mat, I can take this off the mat, and that would be pretty amazing,” says Breezy. And that is exactly what she did. During this part of her journey, she gained an understanding into the depth of her issues and realized that she “did not even have a true relationship with food.” Instead, she had emotional eating. Emotional eating is turning to food to satisfy emotions instead of hunger. Recognizing it is not always easy to do for those who are directly affected by it, but it is the first step towards breaking free from it and the problems it causes. After reaching such a ground-breaking self-realization through her yoga practice, Breezy knew she wanted to share what she had learned with others. She started teacher training at Barefoot under the second owners, Matthew and Holly Krepps. By that time, she knew she wanted to open her

6

own yoga studio, but because she was so closely knitted to everyone at Barefoot, she did not have a desire to compete. Barefoot was her home, and she had no problem accepting and being happy in that particular place in her life. As fate would have it though, in 2009, the Krepps were ready to begin a new chapter of their lives. This marked the beginning of Breezy’s dream coming to life. She became the third owner of Barefoot Studio in 2009 and continues to touch the lives of others through her passion, yoga. Although Barefoot has been under Breezy’s reign for six years, it has been in existence for twenty years. Catherine Rodgers, who played a monumental role in pushing the yoga movement in the Little Rock community, opened the doors in 1995. Over the years, many local residents have shown a great deal of interest in yoga, but there have been times that misconceptions about the practice have arisen. One common misconception is that yoga is a type of religion.

Other classes include prenatal, restorative, yin, hot, etc. The yoga sessions offered are for any and everyone. There are classes for those who consider themselves beginners, intermediate, and advanced. The studio’s age range is from four weeks to at least 80 years of age. No matter the age, ethnicity, gender, etc., yoga is for everybody. Even more importantly, yoga is not only for everybody but every body. No matter what body type you have, yoga is for you. Breezy affirms, “No matter if you’re a student or a teacher, with anything you do in life, you have to start at the beginning and learn the basics. Your goal might not be to do a certain pose you’ve seen online. Your goal might just be that you want to feel better, but definitely don’t let pictures make your decision as to whether or not you are going to try it. I promise, there’s a class, a style, a teacher out there that you will fall in love with that will help you start feeling better with more energy.”

“Yoga is for everybody. Even more importantly, yoga is not only for everybody, but every BODY.” And while it is true that its origins can be found in Hinduism, most Americans today incorporate it into their lives as physical, mental, and spiritual therapy, exercise, and self-love. Breezy engages in yoga sessions approximately three to five times per week. Most of that is done in the studio with other students. “I love being a student at the studio and being able to be in the classes with everybody, feeling everyone’s energy,” she says. Her practice doesn’t stop at the studio. She also takes it home with her. She is the mother of an adorable two and a half year old daughter named Riley, with whom she shares her love of yoga. This has helped Breezy to embrace the fact that every yoga session will not be the same. Imagine trying a new pose with a two-year old climbing on your back. This may have a slightly different outcome than trying one in a class full of adult students. Breezy relates the differences to life and says, “Whatever life presents you, that’s how you incorporate and work it into your life.” Open seven days a week, the studio offers a variety of classes, including Mommy and Me Yoga for moms with both infants and toddlers.

Since 2015 marks the year of Barefoot’s 20th anniversary, the studio has many treats in store for both members and non-members. Each month, a variety of workshops and events will be offered. In February, Barefoot partnered with a local massage therapist to offer a couples shiatsu massage. The proceeds and blankets received directly benefited the Van, a part of The One, Inc., a local nonprofit organization with a mission to locate and love our unsheltered homeless neighbors. Another February treat was a free community class offered by one of the teacher trainees. Breezy loves giving back to the community and supporting new yoga teachers, so keep your eyes open as you never know what she might have in store. In addition to the upcoming surprises, Barefoot also offers your first week of Yoga classes at no charge. Get deals on the studio’s website, www.barefootstudio.com, by following Barefoot on Facebook, or by simply calling in and asking about current specials! HIS JUNK, HER TREASURE “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Junk Revival, LLC brings this age-old quote to life. By Charlette Beasley

A

unique company that prides itself in creating valuable items from materials others may deem as useless or “junk,” Junk Revival has proved to be a big hit within the Central Arkansas market. It is located in the Downtown Conway Historic District and sells a wide array of merchandise you are unlikely to find in other stores. Owners Holly Stigall and Lisa Hensley met at Lifeline Church in Mayflower, AR approximately five or six years ago. Following that, they would surprisingly run into one another at various antique shows. From time to time, they even began meeting up for dinner. One day, Holly contacted Lisa about going to an antique show in Conway, and the two became aware of a space that opened on Front Street. After taking a look at it, they decided it was not the best time to open a new business and postponed it. Holly’s husband had just launched a plumbing business in July 2014, and the reality of starting a new business at that time was a little intimidating. A week after postponing their plans, Holly and Lisa were informed of another building available that was in a great location and affordable. This time, they jumped on it. In September 2014, they began making plans to prepare for opening day, and on November 7, 2014, they opened the doors. “I’m 48 years old and Holly is 28, but we have turned out to perfectly compliment each other. We are the perfect balance of young &... ‘seasoned,’ ” says Lisa. These lovely ladies have always had a knack for entrepreneurship and business, but the journey they would embark on together did not begin until that fateful day in November. Prior to that, Lisa ran a coffee/sandwich/gift shop in Conway, and Holly worked in retail for most of her life. Holly spent the last four years before joining forces with Lisa working as a Farm Bureau insurance agent. And while they both enjoyed the successful careers they had established over the years, there was still something missing. Holly confirmed that she had always dreamed of owning her own store. 8

The only question she couldn’t quite answer was what kind. “I used to think I wanted to open a western store, because I love cowboy boots, western wear, etc. When we (she and Lisa) went to Antique Week in Texas, it clicked,” said Holly. Their visit to Antique Week fueled the idea behind the unique theme of Junk Revival. “I wanted to open this store because of my love of creating things and the love of “junkin”. Holly & I both share those two things. My passion is sewing, crafting, & making something new out of things other folks might regard as useless. I love the fact that when people walk in, they are excited at what they see. Holly and I really try hard to be original & unique. So far, we’ve really been able to keep that goal in sight,” says Lisa. “I’ve home-schooled two girls, Casie who is 20 now and at UCA, and McKenzie, 14. Although I love them dearly, it’s time for mamma’s hobbies & dreams to become reality.” During our visit to Junk Revival, Holly revealed to us the passion she has for helping people and having fun while doing it. She always knew she wanted to open her own store. When we asked her what she loves most about running her own business, she said, “I have a passion for this, and you can see it all over my face. And I want everybody else to feel the same way and feel welcome. I love that I can wake up and put jeans and boots on and not have to wear slacks and a dress shirt.” On a regular basis, Lisa reminds Holly that running the store “is just like therapy” for her. A beautiful vintage tablecloth transformed into a strikingly gorgeous blouse, dozens of handmade headbands, one-of-a-kind linen dresses, boot cuffs, all handmade jewelry collections, cowhide rugs, and chocolate made in Minnesota are just a few of the goodies circulating throughout the store. What’s even more remarkable than the items themselves is that Holly and Lisa know the owners behind them. The majority of their items come from small businesses and individual sellers in Texas and Arkansas, including an Arkansas local who

hand sews a number of the linen pieces you can find within the store. Recently, owners Lisa and Holly were contacted by Conway Downtown Partnership about staying open late, past five or six, at least one night a week to accommodate local residents who work late but would like to shop. There have also been conversations about allowing food trucks to set up along the strip. They are very enthusiastic about all of the upcoming possibilities as everything appears to go hand-inhand with the fun and unique atmosphere they are creating within Junk Revival. In the future, the duo also plans to incorporate a junk sale into every year and maybe even every quarter. Their last one was in February 2015. They had trailers and garages full of junk awaiting to be “discovered.” The goal was to create a community event in which everyone could

participate and benefit from. Another plan in the works is hosting Junk Revival Weddings. One section of the store will be reserved for everything vintage-wedding. All of the materials needed to make these weddings a success will be available for sale, ie., big pillars, vintage lights, mason jars, cowhide, vintage boot cuffs, etc. In addition to providing materials and other necessary items, the owners plan to provide a place to take fabulous wedding pictures fitting the vintage theme and ultimately a venue for the bride and groom to get hitched barn-style! Be on the lookout for more developments within the Junk Revival Community! And don’t forget to follow them on Facebook! #JunkRevival

EAT WORKING TO END CHILDHOOD HUNGER, ONE TACO AT A TIME

One taco at at time, Tacos 4 Life in Conway is working to end childhood hunger. The TexMex restaurant is the newest concept from Austin and Ashton Samuelson, owners of Pitza 42 in Conway, and follows the same basic principle: meal for meal. The strategy is simple, Tacos4Life will donate the funds necessary to Feed My Starving Children to purchase one meal for every meal sold in the restaurant. For every taco, quesadilla, burrito, salad or rice bowl sold, $0.22 is donated to FMSC. They have produced a scientifically developed rice pack designed to meet the needs of severely malnourished children in over 60 countries. It all started a few years ago when Austin and Ashton started developing a passion for fighting world hunger. They were burdened by a couple facts that they could not escape. • Over 21,000 people perish each day simply because they don’t have enough food to eat (this is one person every four seconds). • Hunger is the single most solvable problem facing the world today. So the idea hit them. “What if there was a restaurant that donated a meal to feed a starving child every time someone purchased a meal in the restaurant?” And the concept has been nothing short of successful. As of February, Tacos 4 Life has donated 252,259 meals since they’ve opened! Aside from the life-changing mission, dining at the restaurant is an experience in itself. You will see eclectic light fixtures, a random assortment of colorful chairs, walls full of re-purposed, hand made decor, and much more. Friendly staff and the awesomely funky atmosphere combines

with outstanding food to make Tacos 4 Life a true treasure of Conway. The menu features over 16 amazing tacos (some classic, some quirky), burritos, quesadillas, salads, rice bowls, and desserts. Don’t forget to try the amazing, homemade guacamole and salsa that will blow your mind! The Chips and Queso is no different for exceeding your expectations. It’s an enormous plate of seasoned tortilla chips and a cheese dip mixed with a bunch of add ins that make this some of the best. Dining as a large family? You won’t be disappointed by the reasonably-priced menu, either. A large meal of three tacos and two sides will set you back $8-$13. Choose between a menu full of taco variations, from classics like carnitas and fish tacos to adventurous flavor like shrimp with famous pineapple cream ono sauce; served with pineapple, green onions, and toasted coconut (Ono Shrimp) and a slow-roasted pork carnitas simmered in citrus and cumin topped with bacon, sweet pickle and gouda cheese (Cuban Pork). Every taco was specially crafted of different elements that combine together to create something truly unique. As you may have heard, Austin and Ashton are also transforming their restaurant, Pizza 42 on Dave Ward, into another Tacos 4 Life location to donate even more meals to children! Check them out at: 716 Oak St. and now at 2335 Dave Ward in Conway, Arkansas!

Local: Tell us a little about you. Alice: I’m an Arkansas native. I decided that I wanted to join the welding industry when I heard about the lucrative and numerous job opportunities. The fact that this is a male dominated industry did not phase me one bit. Local: Who has been your main inspiration? Alice: Both my brother and husband are welders. They have always been my inspiration. Local: In 2012, there were 357,400 welders in the United States, of which only 2% were women. Why do you think that is? Alice: Despite the fact that “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II built more planes and boats quicker than they could be shot down, women don’t typically turn to welding as a career. I think that women make some of the best welders because of their patience, attention to detail, and capabilities with mirror welding. Many in my opinion do not choose welding because it IS in their mind not a feminine pursuit. They may not think that they would be able to easily get a job, which is the furthest thing from the truth. Local: Is welding a tough field for women to initially get into? Alice: I think that women and men can do anything they set their mind to. But no, not at all. Welding is not tough for a woman to break into.

Local: What kinds of jobs are available for those interested in becoming a welder? Alice: The welding field is wide open. Welders are needed in literally every industry that joins metal from shipbuilding, manufacturing, construction, refineries, oil/gas field...on and on. Local: Do you have any advice for women that are wanting to get into the field of welding? Alice: My advice to women who want to get into the field of welding is just do it! The field is

definitely ready for more women. In fact, we are losing half of our welder workforce in the next 10 years. So we need welders!! Local: So tell us more about your school. Alice: Arkansas Welding Academy (AWA) is in Jacksonville, Arkansas & was founded as a multifaceted, for profit school with a goal to provide instruction in the science, technology and application of welding and related joining disciplines. From factory floor to high-rise construction, from military weaponry to nuclear power plants, AWA continues to lead the way in welding education to ensure a strong, competitive and exciting career. We were started by a team of professional combo welders with twenty plus years field welding and training experience. They have developed a core curriculum that is based upon the real world training principles. Local: What can they achieve at the Arkansas Welding Academy? Alice: Students learn all aspects of MIG, TIG, STICK, and FLUXCOR through hands-on training. They advance from structural welding to pipe welding which is where the money and demand is greatest. They also receive job placement assistance upon graduation and lifetime brush-up. Classes are open-enrollment and begin the first and third Monday of each month based upon booth availability. We believe that in order to be the best you have to learn from the best. We train our students so that you are “field ready” when you complete our programs. Alice Obenshain is the director at the Arkansas Welding Academy. She is also a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI). The CWI is widely recognized, both nationally and internationally, and successful companies have come to rely on this American Welding Society certification when ensuring the highest level of quality workmanship.

REASONS TO SHOP The "Shop Small" movement is certainly growing, but sometimes we could all use a little reminder on why it's so important to support your community's businesses.

Build Community

Locally owned businesses build strong communities by sustaining vibrant town centers, linking neighbors in a web of economic and social relationships. They are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more committed to the community’s welfare and future. The casual encounters you enjoy at neighborhood businesses build relationships and community cohesiveness. They’re the ultimate social networking sites!

Local Decision-Making

Local ownership of business means residents with roots in the community are involved in key development decisions that shape our lives and local environment.

Keeping Dollars in the Local Economy

Compared to chain stores, locally owned businesses recycle a much larger share of their revenue back into the local economy, enriching the whole community. In fact, each dollar you spend at independent businesses returns 3 times more money to your local economy (hundreds of times more than buying from an online mega-retailer). Shopping locally is the best way to show pride in your city and help protect the businesses that make our city unique.

Give Back To Your Community!

Small businesses donate more than twice as much per sales dollar to local non-profits, events, and teams compared to big businesses.

Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship fuels America’s economic innovation and prosperity, and serves as a key means for families to move out of low-wage jobs and into the middle class.

Job and Wages

Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits than chains do.

Diverse Products

Local stores carry inventory you might not find at national chain stores. Local business owners choose products based on what their customers want and often carry unique items from local artists and farmers.
