Stylish Construction By Charlette Beasley

Outdoor kitchens and terrazzo –style countertops, customized bathrooms surrounded by sea glass, silver and black roofs with dazzling stripes of copper. Wouldn’t it be nice to have what you want on a budget? Now you can! Newman Construction is well versed in stylish construction. Nothing is left to chance!

A true construction company with design in mind, Newman Construction welcomes even the most challenging jobs. Given that the owner’s whole reason for living is to be able to construct artwork with his hands---just kidding, a little. Brett Newman is a respectable man with a family of seven. With a wife and five kids, he’s most definitely a family man. He’s just a family man who lives to construct art. Originally from Benton, he now lives in Conway and conducts much of his business in Central Arkansas. His management is superb, and the few people he hires to work under him share his values and commitment to delivering high-quality products. With a finance background, tons of experience in creative art, eight years of military experience, and several years as a sergeant, he brings a myriad of skills to Newman Construction.

Brett believes everyone deserves to have a certain uniqueness about their home. “No two people are alike, so why should they have the

same product?” He attests that his company does not engage in design copying, so what’s yours is yours. Specializing in custom cabinetry, tile work, metal work, and glass art, just to name a few, he has years of experience in construction! Newman Construction has been in Central Arkansas for the last six years and is turning up the volume this year! With an even greater focus on integrating aesthetics within his construction company, we look forward to seeing what else he has in store! His remarkable creation of the Arkansas Top is on permanent display at Little Rock’s very own Bernice Gardens. With various colored glass embedded within, it’s a beautiful sight to see! His company is family-owned and definitely unlike many, if any, you will find. Involved from design to finish, Newman Construction is dedicated to working as a team with the customer. This means you take the lead and hand the baton when you’re ready! The company works with you and for you!

In addition, the company creates products that are environmentally friendly. 84% of his counter-tops consist of reclaimed material, which allows Brett to add a beautiful, eclectic design at an affordable rate! He has many tricks up his sleeve for the customers who like to intertwine various designs throughout their homes. He enjoys using reclaimed material left over from a design he installs within one room of a home to create something bold and exciting in another room. In the event that customers would like to work with a professional designer, his stylish construction company works closely with a lead certified designer. However, with 18 years of experience integrating construction and art, Brett’s natural flair for design shows through any piece of work he creates, regardless! BE A LOCALIST. By Kaitlin Schmidt

As a native Arkansan, creating a better future for my city has always been on the top of my list. It was the main reason we developed this magazine. We thought long and hard and developed our mission statement & what we wanted to do for our city, we came up with a plethora of ideas for the future and have a huge passion for what we are doing... as far as the concept and our mission goes, we didn’t think we had much left to learn. Until now. This past June, I was given the opportunity to attend my first BALLE (Business Alliance for Local Living Economies) conference in Phoenix, AZ. I attended this to learn, to be inspired, to be motivated, and to bring those thoughts and plans back to Arkansas. They spoke of agriculture, of economics, of sustainability, and of politics. But over the course of those three days, they emphasized on one thing the most - compassion. It is not a word I generally use when I am talking about business, but I will now. So what does compassion have to do with building and bringing our city together? One person surely can’t do this alone. “Separation is our greatest wound,” said BALLE Executive Director Michelle Long. “Absolute separateness is the source of most of our problems. The most important thing we can do right now is cultivate the capacity to take care of each other and the earth we live on. This movement is about reconnecting.” Localism is about using compassion (which should be an instinctive human emotion in the first place) to build communities that are more sustainable and healthy - making our local economy stronger and more resilient. It is about recognizing what truly matters in our community: local ownership, nature, relationships and connections, collaboration, and equal opportunities for all. It is about building a positive alternative to the outdated Wall Street-driven economic system that is failing our communities. It is time we get past the idea that competition is more important than collaboration. It is time our city (and our nation for that matter) get past the constant thoughts of inequality, racism and hate. Van Jones, Founder of Dream Corps, award-winning pioneer in human rights, Yaleeducated attorney, and NY Times best selling 8

author stated, “Solidarity is not charity. It is an act of mutual aid between two forces seeking the same objective.” It is time we realize that we are all in this together and that we are all striving for the same future. So you’re probably wondering... what is my point? It is time to move forward. It is time to feel like our state isn’t a decade behind the rest. It is time to be a localist. Localism refers to repairing the main building blocks of our local living economy. These include our vital industries such as transportation, tourism, agriculture/ food, retail, energy, manufacturing, and the arts. Our entire community will be transformed when we alter these into localized, sustainable and community focused industries. We tend to focus primarily on our community, but the vision is global. We are all solving a piece of a larger puzzle, a global network of cooperatively interlinked local economies. Author Adrienne Maree Brown said it best when she mentioned the definition of ‘emergence’. “Emergence is the way complex systems and patterns arise out of relatively simple interactions.” And while you may associate the word ‘strategy’ with a game of chess, the military or something horrible that has been pitched as “strategic,” she states that, “Emergent strategies are a way for humans to practice complexity and grow the future through relatively simple interactions.” It is our responsibility to create solutions that work for all... to imagine the world we want. The BALLE community focuses on changing how we all think about the purpose of business and economy and changing mindsets from “every-man-himself ” to an understanding that “real security comes from a community as a whole - from sharing not hoarding, from partnership, not domination.” Next time you

are shopping, realize that your simple purchase can actually impact another human being.

So what next? Support Your Community. Sounds simple enough right? Local business owners are your neighbors and they are less likely to leave. Invest in Your Community. Your local businesses are invested in the community’s future. The dollars they generate end up supporting other small, local businesses while creating jobs and generating tax revenues for the city at the same time (rather than funding some massive golfing vacation for a group of wealthy CEOs on the other side of the country). Keep Your Community Unique. Where we shop, where we eat, where we go to have fun- all of these things are what makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. Reduce Environmental Impact. Locally owned businesses make more local purchases and generally set up in city centers rather than developing new buildings. All wealth comes from nature. Without respecting natural boundaries, we will not have health or wealth for our own species going forward. Besides, part of the joy of living in Arkansas is appreciating what we are known for - being the natural state. Better Service. Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding and passion about the products they are selling and take the time to get to know customers. My personality has always been to tackle projects alone. Because of this, the hardest part about achieving all of my ideas is knowing how to invite people in. I normally revert to just doing everything myself, but we can only get so far alone. Don’t get me wrong, you can do a lot by yourself, but you can do the impossible with a great team. It is not enough anymore to just have another bright idea. It is about turning our ideas into action. This is all about building communities. We need to understand that relationships matter. It means we use local resources to meet our needs, reconnect our farmers with eaters, investors with entrepreneurs, and business owners with their communities. This is about recognizing that not one of us can do it alone.

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” {top} Garden at PHX Renews. The mission of PHX Renews is simple: to find temporary uses for vacant lots that will beautify the city while creating opportunity. {bottom} Van Jones Speaking about equality and building our future at BALLE 2015

Making A Difference By Charlette Beasley

These days, the police officers that usually make headlines are the ones that local communities would rather not know. Thankfully though, Central Arkansas has an entire police force that takes pride in challenging this assumption day after day. The North Little Rock Police Department (NLRPD) continues to shed light and love on one of the most controversial relationships in the media today, that of police and the communities in which they serve. Striving to make a difference in the lives of those they serve is one of many goals the department expects its officers to meet. Earlier this year, we received the opportunity to meet with two of NLRPD’s own: Officer Tommy Norman, who takes every opportunity he can to give back to the local community, and Officer Carmen Helton, recruiting officer for the department who is also committed to positively impacting the lives of local citizens. Officer Norman regularly takes to social media, most notably, Instagram, to share his positive thoughts with the world. With more than 24,000 followers, he impacts lives daily. He also makes it a point to get out ‘on foot’ and get to know the good folks in the neighborhoods he serves. One day, you may see him shooting basketball with kids in the area, and on another day, he could very well be helping an elderly lady cross the street. Regardless of how he contributes to building a positive relationship with the community, he does it. Someone is always watching, and it has become obvious as more and more feedback rolls in. To name a few: - A serviceman serving the United States military in Kuwait notified the department that he and his team were inspired by their work in the community. - A professor at a college in Alabama acknowledged that he uses NLRPD’s social sites and videos to teach various lessons on public relations and how to positively affect the community. - A gentleman in Atlanta who runs an organization for kids plans to fly to Arkansas in August of this year to visit the department and do a ride-along so he can see exactly what all the ‘talk’ is about. - Not too long ago, the Miami-Dade Police Department tweeted, “North Little Rock Police Department, you have our attention.” How phenomenal it is to see how such positivity can spread far and wide! NLRPD 10

also focuses its attention on creating various programs designed to help the community. ‘Shop with a Cop’ is a program that benefits families in need during the holidays. It began with Officer Norman 8 years ago and is now implemented annually within the department. Another program that officers are expected to partake in encourages them to perform an act of kindness one day out of each month. Whether visiting the elderly in nursing homes or giving a child who missed the bus a ride to school, kindness and love are required. The North Little Rock Police Department likes to be proactive rather than reactive as this is the best way to make a difference in the community. Officer Norman has been involved in volunteer activities since he was at least 12 years old. Becoming a police officer just provided him with more mediums with which to channel his efforts. Both Officers Helton and Norman credit the department’s success to Chief Mike Davis’ leadership and the entire force’s willingness to work together as a team. Chief Davis expects the department to get off the main roads and into the inner city. He believes it’s important to get to know others’ stories, as everyone has one. Officer Helton touched on the importance of spending more time in the community while both on and off duty to show citizens that officers are people too. She reminisced on a time that she went grocery shopping in uniform and noticed the intriguing stares she got from others, including children. “It’s funny because, sometimes, people don’t realize that police officers are human too. I’ve got to eat just like they do,” said Officer Helton with a smile. According to Officer Norman, “Being a police officer goes beyond the badge. You have to lead with your heart. If you lead with your heart, you will inevitably attract trust and respect from the community.” After speaking with these two officers, Local. is proud to support NLRPD for its efforts. It’s clear to us that there is something special about this team. To hear two officers speak with so much passion and love for their jobs and team inspired us as a whole, and we are proud that they have chosen to use Local. as a medium to connect with those that matter---YOU. * Like the North Little Rock Police Department’s Facebook page and follow us on our NLRPD twitter page @NLRPD

ummertime is here, so let the fun begin! As usual, July and August will probably be the hottest months of the year, and there’s no better way to cool off than to take a trip to Central Arkansas’ only water park! Wild River Country is celebrating its 30-year anniversary this year, and with new operator and owner Chris Shillcutt, it should be around for at least 30 more. After the park experienced less than stellar financial management, owners Mort Fishman and Michael Slattery took over and were on the hunt for a reputable operator. Mort attended the annual World Water Park Association conference and heard about Chris several times while he was there. He took it upon himself to contact him in regards to the opportunity and was quite surprised that Chris was already familiar with Wild River Country. Little did he know that Chris is in fact a North Little Rock native! Born and raised there, he worked as a lifeguard for the water park when it opened for the very first time. Talk about irony! He and his wife, Collette, were living in Kansas City, her hometown, when Mort gave him the offer. Hesitant to relocate, he and his wife agreed to be consultants for the park instead. This only worked for a short time before they packed up everything and moved back to the Natural State to become full-fledged operators. Since that day in 2012 when Chris and Collette bought into Aqua Park Holdings, LLC, they hit the ground running. They’ve spent close to $3 million in three years on infrastructure and to bring the park up to standard. It is now safer as many old pumps and motors were replaced, and there are fewer shut-downs. Last year, there was almost zero downtime. The park always has plenty of tubes and life jackets and is very appealing. When Chris first visited the park, he was asked what he thought about it. His response? “It’s probably the best detention center I’ve ever seen. There’s barbed wire fence all around the park.

All of the buildings are penitentiary gray color. The concrete is not painted. All of the slides are the same color.” Since then, he has upgraded the park’s appearance in many ways. Having worked for several big water park companies throughout the country, Chris is well-aware of industry standards and what it takes for a water park to reach its greatest potential. Recycling money back into the park is essential. A true Arkansan at heart, he is more than committed to ensuring that other Arkansans have the opportunity to experience a high-quality water park at “home.” According to Chris, we can expect to see many more exciting changes in the future. In mid-July of this year, three new attractions will be added: -AquaLoop Slide – There’s only a handful of parks within the United States that have these slides, and Wild River Country is about to join them! Riders stand in the AquaLaunch Capsule facing forward, arms crossed, and wait for the bottom of the floor to drop out from beneath them. They then go shooting straight down into an intense vertical free fall, feet first into the loop with speeds and exhilaration leaving riders breathless! -Speed Slide – Speed Slides are the tallest, steepest, and fastest slides around! This three-hump, high-thrill slide entertains riders and spectators alike, built with a balance of safety and adrenaline in mind. -Free-Fall Plus – With its open Freefall

slide and enclosed AquaTube entrance, the Freefall Plus has been a guaranteed crowdpleaser in some of the world’s best water parks! Riders enjoy the experience of being inside an enclosed dark slide for the first 20-25 feet before dropping out into the open. With its adrenalinepumping, head-rushing design, it brings milewide smiles to riders and spectators alike! Other new things to expect are a new and improved Kids’ Area that is sure to keep your children wanting to come back for more. Also, in October, instead of having a haunted house, all who are 13 and older will be invited to walk the Haunted Trail. It will be a 30-40 minute walk-through with approximately 50-60 live characters throughout who are lurking, ready to scare your pants off! Building a continuous stream of income for the park is an essential component to maximizing its potential. Currently, there are plans in process to design a high ropes challenge course, with zip lines and the like. Park owners have already met with a couple of companies regarding the design and development and have taken measurements of the area. Although not going into effect this summer, it will go a long way towards securing regular income for the park as it will ensure that they have a source of revenue for ten months out of the year. Now everyone can look forward to spending time in the park during all seasons!

It’s not just for kids! Wild River Country strives to create an exciting experience for everyone! Select Friday nights will be designated as Family Fun Night. Instead of staying open until 7 p.m., the park will not close until 10 p.m. Families can come and enjoy the park together at night vs. during the day. In addition to adding and improving infrastructure, events, etc., Chris enjoys keeping Wild River Country connected with local businesses, schools, and non-profit organizations. Schools are able to request donations online via wildrivercountry.com. The Zoo, Travelers, and Magic Springs all work with Wild River Country to bring people into the state for a weekend of family fun sponsored by Highland Dairy. Local hotels, restaurants, and other businesses also partner with the water park to offer discounted park tickets to consumers when they choose to do business with them. This keeps local dollars flowing within the community as ticket-holders are more likely to eat and shop locally. Chris’ goals for the water park have nothing to do with money. He wants to continue to grow the park, making it bigger and better, be an entertainment venue for North Little Rock, and bring more people into the city. He prides himself in giving back, through time, money, and support. The park employs 300 people, most of whom are teenagers. Aside from helping them to establish a strong worth ethic and giving a positive place to spend their spare time, most of the money they receive goes back into the local community. As the park continues to grow, owners hope to be able to offer a scholarship to those in need. For those who like to have group outings or caterings, Wild River Country still meets the mark. Companies can collaborate with the park to offer Employee Appreciation days. Purchasing tickets at a discounted rate, they can designate a day of their choice and sell the tickets to employees. Employees then come out to celebrate on that day. Other companies agree to pay half the price of tickets for their employees while the employees pay the other half. Since the rate for employers is already discounted from $30 to $15, that means the employee can come enjoy this phenomenal water park for a mere $7.50! That’s $30 for a family of four, which is the regular admission price for one person! Although Wild River Country has endured many changes over the years, it is evident that they are now headed in the right direction! Under the right leadership, any company can

excel. Chris Shillcutt is ON THE not just a great water park operator, he is a C OV E R great Arkansan. He is using his vision for the company, Aqua Park Holdings, LLC, to improve not only Wild River Country but the North Little Rock community and state of Arkansas as a whole. That kind of passion, dedication, and vision can be hard to find. Having started from the bottom to actually running the company and relocating miles and miles away only to receive an offer he couldn’t refuse that placed him back in Arkansas, Chris realizes he has come full circle. A Secret Unlocked Step inside and look behind the curtain. We’re about to reveal the best kept secret in Central Arkansas.... the Kingpin Sports Grill!! Located inside, but completely separate from,

Allfam Bowling and Entertainment Center in Cabot, Kingpin offers a selection of food and beverages that are truly “not your typical bowling alley food”. From hand-cut, breaded and made to order boneless wings to an out of this world fresh-made from scratch Grilled Chicken Alfredo, Kingpin will surprise you with fresh ingredients and a made-to-order mindset. In addition to alfredo and wings, both boneless and traditional, fresh salads, wraps, and handpattied old fashioned burgers help to round out a menu of fare to please anyone. Also included are a great selection of appetizers, from fried

pickles to wood chips, and oh, of course, maybe just maybe the best pizza around, which starts with fresh yeast-dough made in house. Sauces, rubs and marinades also have the personal touch straight out of Kingpin’s secret recipe book. Strange for a sports-grill-bowlingalley-combo to have this kind of dedication to its cuisine? Not if you know owner Bill Allen and crew. They mean it, stand behind it, and fix it if it’s not just right! Constructed in 2007, Allfam Bowling and Entertainment Center is home to one of the largest and nicest bowling facilities in the state, and maybe the surrounding areas. With 32 lanes Allfam regularly hosts not only league bowlers but a variety of high school and college bowling tournaments, including the

State of Arkansas High School Tournament and has hosted the Mid-Winter Classic Collegiate Tournament which saw Arkansas State University as well as out of state rivals compete. Allfam also has a program for families called Kids Bowl Free. From now until October, kids 15 and under can bowl 2 games every day FREE! What! Yes it’s true, just rent your shoes and roll on. Kingpin Sports Grill is the labor of love of Bill Allen. He and the folks at the Grill work every day to reach Bill’s goal of ‘standing room only’. And it’s not a just a business thing, it’s a Bill thing. “We have the best grill around and it is time people knew it.” Rounding out the great food are the great drinks with 12 beers on tap, including Arkansas Craft selections, over 20 bottle varieties and a full liquor bar. A Free Membership is required to enjoy the bar.

There is a new restaurant in town! Taking over the former Old World Pizza space on West 3rd Street, Fresh will be serving breakfast and lunch in a casual atmosphere. Featuring sandwiches, soups, pizza, and some grab and go sandwiches, Fresh is exactly that: a menu utilizing fresh ingredients. The restaurant uses locally produced foods as much as possible, giving us natural and healthy options — except maybe the enormous fresh cinnamon rolls, but we all need a sweet treat once in awhile. Lunch includes sandwiches with locally made bread, several salads and a salad bar with 16 items, 2 soups made daily, pizza by the slice and sandwiches where the bread is made and delivered fresh daily! Some of the most popular menu items include a singleserve avocado and egg breakfast pizza and owner Phillip Naylor’s grandmother’s pimento cheese. Owners Phillip Naylor and Pam Jones have been friends for years and in June of this year they both checked one thing off their bucket lists - opened their own restaurant. “I had gastric sleeve surgery over a year ago and lost 160 pounds,” Naylor said. “I had trouble finding healthy options and it’s important I get nutritious food.” So Naylor and Jones took that problem into their own hands. “Everything is fresh, and we have some produce from local farms,” said Naylor, who also holds a full time job as nurse. The restaurant is almost “like a fruit and vegetable stand” according to Jones and soon she would like to open a small market area in the restaurant for local Arkansans to sell their goods. She also told us that the restaurant will become a place where local artists can display and sell their

work. With monthly rotating collections, The Arc Arkansas will be the first to showcase their artwork for the month of July. The food isn’t the only thing that is Fresh. The interior has been completely remodeled with a splash of bright green paint across the dining area along with reused tin work on the walls give it a very eclectic feel. “We wanted everything to be fresh, which is what inspired the interior design,” Naylor says. “We designed it to feel like a vegetable stand.” The restaurant also features 2 patio areas for outdoor dining and hanging out. Naylor said, “We want to bring the public in on this as well.” They are currently in search for the best (and most fresh and cost efficient) salad dressing recipes from the customers. To enter, head over and grab the details and submit your winning recipe. They are also open to customer food recipes, so don’t be afraid to submit your favorite dish! The hours are expanding to 10am - 7:30 pm Monday- Friday and the “Bicyclers’ Brunch” on Saturdays from 10am - 2pm. With future plans of gaining their license to sell alcohol, Naylor and Jones will also provide local craft beers and wines. If you’ve been looking for a fun, healthy (and FRESH) lunch break option, look no further. Head over to 1706 West 3rd Street in downtown Little Rock or call 501-319-7021. Vaping Victory By Charlette Beasley | Photos by Kaitlin Schmidt

“Every second of the day, someone somewhere is lighting up a cigarette.” While this statement is impossible to confirm 100%, it sure wouldn’t be hard to believe. However, if you have been staying abreast of upcoming trends, you may be aware of one that could soon challenge that. Vaping, the act of inhaling vapor from an e-liquid through a personal vaporizer, is already impacting lives, including those of your fellow Arkansans. Over the past several years, vape shops have been popping up around Arkansas. Your Local. team was able to meet with one reputable shop in Greenbrier, Drippers Vape Shop. Opened on April 25 of this year, Drippers is committed to providing quality products at low prices, educating customers, and creating a fun environment. Like you most likely have experienced, we have encountered a wide range of statements regarding vaping. Since we were unsure of what was true or false, owner Eric Stubbs agreed to do a ‘tell-all’ with us...telling us anything we wanted to know!

Local.: When did vaping become so popular? Drippers: “Vaping has been on the rise since 2008.” Local.: “I know some vape shops make their own juice. Do you? And if yes, do you mind sharing with us a list of ingredients you use to make it? Drippers: ”Yes, we don’t mind. We want everyone to know it’s not some mysterious stuff from the moon. We know exactly what goes in. In fact, we always like to say, ‘Whatever we’re vaping, you’re vaping. Ingredients include propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, nicotine, and the flavoring. The propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin have a range of uses, medicines, foods, air fresheners,

etc. Each ingredient is approved by the FDA independently of one another, but altogether the combination has not yet been recognized. This is because the market is so new. As far as nicotine goes, remember, it’s not the nicotine in the cigarettes that’s lethal. It’s the tar and other chemicals that you can avoid by vaping.”

Local.: “Wow. That’s amazing. What about all of the talk about toxic levels of formaldehyde?” Drippers: “It’s not true. You would literally have to dry burn for at least 5 minutes solid to reach dangerous levels of formaldehyde. There’s more formaldehyde being produced when cooking over your stove.” Local.: Thanks for the insight! We noted that you listed flavor as one of your ingredients. How many flavors have you made, and what kind are they? Drippers: “We have literally hundreds of flavors. Just to name a few, macadamia nut, blueberry, combinations of fruits and crèmes, various fruit smoothie flavorings, glazed donut, etc.” Local.: “Are there age limitations imposed that dictate who can and cannot buy from your store?” Drippers: “There are no laws that prevent underage smokers from buying vape products. However, as a vape shop that is committed to the local community and its people, we, along with other local shops, have agreed to self-regulate and not sell to any customers under the age of 18.” Local.: “That’s very admirable. So tell us, does vaping really help people kick the habit?” Drippers: “Definitely. Once, we had a gentleman, enter the shop who had no prior experience with vaping. He admitted to us that he had been smoking three packs of cigarettes each day for the past 30 years and wanted to stop. He was interested in the new vaping technology that provides more flavor and satisfaction. We in turn helped him pick out what he needed to get started. We assured him that his health was our first priority, and although he was a bit skeptical, he made a purchase. Three days passed before he re-entered the shop, but

when he did, it was obvious his life had begun to change. He was so happy and joyful that he was also teary-eyed and couldn’t wait to tell us how he hadn’t had a cigarette in the whole three days he vaped. It’s stories like this that make it all worthwhile.” Local.: “Amazing! Are there any other uses for vaping other than to stop smoking?” Drippers: “Yes! Some of our customers use our products to lose weight, and some like to vape just to taste the various flavors we offer. For those who want to lose weight, our products provide them with the opportunity to enjoy certain flavors without consuming the calories or nicotine. Talk about a win-win!” Local.: “Can people vape anywhere they want?’” Drippers: “Legally, you can vape anywhere you want unless a business owner disallows it. And just because you can vape anywhere you want doesn’t mean you should. The vapor clouds can be rather distracting and overwhelming for some.”

Local.: “Do you all have any special events during which you invite your customers to join? Drippers: “Currently, we have ‘vape testings,’ similar to wine tastings. We also have a lounge that a lot of our younger crowd uses to hang out. From time to time, the vaping community also has cloud competitions in which vapers compete to see who can blow the biggest clouds. ” Local.: “Is there any advice you would like to give to those who may be ‘on the fence’ about vaping?” Drippers: “Educate yourself. If someone tells you something negative about vaping, be sure to do your research. There are so many rumors floating around, and we’d hate for someone to miss out on the benefits of vaping due to inaccurate information.” Have Questions? Call now!

Well, Dr. Traci Kiernan knows. Founder of Natural State Health Center, she focuses not only on chiropractic care but nutrition, detoxification, and just about anything that promotes good health! In addition to providing physical care and consultation, she holds various workshops and classes throughout the year. Check out her website, naturalstatehealthcenter.com, to stay abreast of upcoming offerings. In July, she is offering a Diabetes Prevention workshop. The genuine level of care she has for her patients’ overall health is unique, to say the least. You will find that while many medical professionals encourage preventative measures, few actually spend more time preventing than they do reacting. Some individuals cannot imagine a day without pain, and whether they know it or not, they are not really living. It’s definitely possible to be alive but not “living.” It’s been said, “To be aware is to be alive,” and this still holds true today. By committing to address the cause of her patients’ health concerns rather than placing a “Band-Aid” over their problem(s), she creates awareness. Proactivity and prevention are paramount to maximizing health, and as a chiropractor with seven years of experience in her field, this is evident in her practice. Dr. Kiernan changes tons of lives through her work with Natural State Health Center, and remarkably, one was that of a 16-month old child. Plagued with frequent ear infections, the child had been on a total of 6 rounds of antibiotics that were not helping but in fact making them worse. She worked closely with the family to target the root of his problem. Fast forward to today and the child who was once crying in constant pain has been free of ear infections since his care with Dr. Kiernan and has no need for medications. No matter what your age, you deserve to live! Dr. Kiernan has a heart for seeing people reach their health potential, no matter what your age.

Garlic Pepper Oil: 1/2 Cup Olive Oil 1/2 diced red bell pepper 1 tbls of chopped garlic Lemon Juice Dash of salt

www.wanderarkansas.com

You can choose any sides, we went with our citrus spinach sauté and wild rice. Salt and pepper to tastes on your chicken after the first flip add a little garlic pepper oil and when you serve, add some when plated.

Citrus Spinach Saute: 1-2 tbls of Olive Oil 1 tsp of chopped garlic Handful of spinach 1/2 lemon Spinach cooks down fast, so be ready to toss it around pretty quick. Lay the olive oil down with the chopped garlic and a dash of salt and pepper. Let the garlic brown a bit then lay down your spinach, cut a lemon in half and use one half of the lemon’s juice to drizzle over the spinach. This will cut the earthy/dirt flavor from the spinach and help it be extra yummy to eat!
